I used to order Pho ga from this place because it was pretty decent. Small mom and pop place. This time I came by with a couple friends and just wanted to drink a plum soda or soda ximuoi. The server or owner denied me my order not because he didn't have it but because he didn't want to give it to me. Instead he limited my options to just water or tea. I was craving chicken pho since it was a chilly morning so I stopped by for early lunch. The restaurant is pretty small. They also had a large family dining when we arrived so most of the tables in the restaurant were used for that family. The staff quickly cleaned a small side table for us but unfortunately it was right by the door so every time the door opened, chilly wind would blow in. Service: The staff working were pretty friendly and accommodating. For some odd reason, they said they were out of stock for many menu items. We ordered half a chicken, a plain noodle, and some steamed rolls. Food took a LONG time to come out. It was also pretty strange that our noodles came out last. We were halfway done with the chicken before the noodles came out. Food: I really enjoyed the noodles and the chicken. The broth from the noodles was very rich in flavor. But I think the highlight was the chicken. The chicken was so tender! It was a little on the bland side but nothing a little sauce can't fix. Overall not a bad first time dining here. I've been yearning for the Ly Thuong Kiet experience I remember from the original Monterey Park location--the one we lost when the complex burned down. Unfortunately, today's visit was subpar and didn't live up to the legacy. The soul of LTK was always in the depth of the broth, but today the soup was bland and lacked that rich, collagen-heavy finish it used to have. Most disappointing was the poultry; it certainly didn't seem to be the traditional yellow feather chicken they were known for. The texture was off, and it lacked that distinct, flavorful fat that defines a truly great bowl of chicken noodle soup. It's sad to see a local icon lose its edge. This place is a small place, and folks who come here usually are in parties of 1-4 or order takeout. It's pretty busy during lunch hours on weekdays but there are tables because people go on and out! Usually there are tables on weekend evenings as well. They don't have an extensive menu, so people really come here for mainly variations of chicken pho/ pho ga or rice dishes. Food comes out quick, and everyone's slurping their noodles down. I appreciate that they serve clean chicken broth with the authentic ginger fish sauce which is what should be served with Pho Ga. All that being said, service can be a miss because they don't really check in on you, so Ive had to walk up to the counter. You don't come here for the service though. The food was ready in about 5 minutes which was fast. The shrimp and crab paste soup was pretty good but the noodle portion was a bit small even for a small size. The soup was nicely seasoned though and the meatballs were good too. My friend said the beef pho was pretty good too. It looked like it had a good portion of meat and noodles too. Overall, I think this is a decent pho place to eat out but there are better ones. The food is not bad and good parking. However, note that they do charge a credit card fee. The chicken pho and the combination pho was absolutely horrendous. Took one bite, paid and left. The chicken was extremely chewy and all the different types of meat tasted off, like they went bad. But then I read some more Yelp reviews and gave it a shot. I'm glad I did. I went in and grabbed a menu off the counter before taking a seat. Soon after, the server came and I asked what was most popular since it was my first time. She recommended the dac biet, so I went with that. I asked for the small size and also a glass of water with no ice. After a while, the food came. Everything looked fine except I noted a lemon slice in place of the usual lime. I grabbed a tray for some sriracha and hoisin sauce, dropped in the veggies, and dug in. Overall the broth is not bad, but I was really surprised by the serving size. This small size was more than enough food with lots of noodles and plenty of meat. Maybe it's missing some of the usual veggies and herbs, but it made up for it with the size. When I was done, I went up to the counter and paid with a credit card. I was very full and satisfied. I would probably come back if I were in the area and wanted a low cost, high value, large pho meal.
