As we headed toward the back of the shop to see if they were selling creemees, we saw they had samples of apple donuts out. They were tasty, but definitely could tell they were made earlier in the day as they were not too fresh. We assumed they were probably trying to clear out their inventory for the day. We eventually found the soft serve machine and ordered a maple creemee. I should start by saying that I'm not a big fan of maple, but if I'm going to try a Vermont creemee, I had to order a maple one. It was perfect, great texture and just a hint of maple taste. My husband asked to try it and he ultimately claimed it as his own, so we ended up buying a second one. So good! Service was okay. We got a weird vibe from the lady who was helping us. She seemed annoyed and very short while we were checking out the food and trying to order our creemee. Maybe because they were going to close soon? Not sure. But that was the only negative about our experience. The Apple Barn is definitely a cool spot to visit if you find yourself in Bennington. Next to the register was a small package wrapped in red & white string, labeled "Bonnie's Uncommon Fruitcake." I've been a sucker for trying fruitcakes ever since I had my first slice of Freihofer's Fruitcake over seventy years ago. Here was a locally baked fruitcake with no difficult to pronounce or preservative ingredients. That definitely made it "Uncommon." Pecans, dates, candied fruit (cherries, pineapple), eggs, sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. That's it! I thought it tasted delicious. It was not overly sweet, had a good amount of nuts and candied fruit, and there was minimal cake (flour) holding it all together perfectly. It's a big open room with a moderately sized and full-service bar. The food is well-made traditional Italian with generous portions. We've tried a lot of the menu and haven't been disappointed. The meatballs are great. The wait staff are attentive, conscientious and clearly care about your experience. This is a family place, but dress appropriately and only bring your kids if they're well behaved. This isn't a place for unruly toddlers or crying babies. Make a reservation a few days in advance and show up 15-20 minutes early. You'll be happy you did and happy you came here.
