A month ago, they charged my husband's credit card $60 AND my credit card $60 for renewal. I have called 3 times and stopped in the store (they can't help) and to date have not received a refund. As most have experienced home remodeling and construction can be an arduous challenge. After contemplating several alternatives for our home we chose to work with Dillman & Upton primarily considering our initial experience with their designer and our perception of their team's quality Beginning with our first conversation, we believed that our designer provided sound advice and guidance, had valuable experience, was knowledgeable, considerate, thorough, and accessible for advice, suggestions and questions. The designer proved out, thankfully. Interactions with the D&U office staff were overall good. A significant surprise was the assignment of both subcontractors other than D&U's usual team. While it is impossible to directly compare our subcontractors with D&U's longstanding team, our's did not have deep, meaningful, value added experience dealing with D&U schematics, overall design and details. This required or significant involvement of our time to interpret details of the blueprint to affect the design goals. We had to call our designer and adjourn major meetings several times for reinforcement of the construction details. Requesting and requiring that some work being redone and changed to conform with a specific design specifications. We had to be our own advocate for a correct job and request repairs for damages to our home (three walls which require our own sanding, priming and repainting). Most disconcerting we had to be our own on-site project manager. A very important aspect we believe dealing with D&U would have provided. Perhaps D&U will say this is over stated and normal construction angst. However, we do not believe it was completed in good faith, as contracted and representative. It was far more tension to get what we paid for wanted or believe was appropriate. In retrospect we believe that the subcontractors should've been highly versed in D&U design goals and had the ability and desire to fully comprehend blueprints and call D&U directly when necessary to discern and clarify. Is this the best craftsmanship that our community offers? Opportunity for improvement include addressing all of the above concerns. Additionally, the price, documentation and communication regarding change orders must be improved. We recognize that some contractors or self-motivated and completed high-quality work, the first time. At our projects conclusion the project, while painful several times, was mostly completed successfully. read more

#10, 4' by 3/4" by 2.5" red oak boards to replace for bench. Perfect customer service at desk, perfect customer service in the lumber yard. Ripped all boards from larger stock. Plenty of great selection of boards to choose from. Price less than big box lumber stores in town (including making all the cuts) and they do not rip boards, but you can buy 2.5" wide red oak, but poor selection or not available. note: all rip cuts high end furniture quality! We began working with D&U on Oct 3, 2019 to replace 9 interior doors and hardware in our home. It took 4 months of communication with the design dept on the specifics of each door, but we were finally able to place the order in late January (2020). The doors were received for install on March 5. Some of the hardware ordered by the design team unfortunately did not match the patterns cut into the doors, so we had to wait until April 3 to receive the correct hardware and place the knobs on the doors. All-said, it took us 4 months of back and forth with D&U staff to order 9 doors and 7 months total to receive the full order. The process was incredibly slow for such a small project, with consistent lapses in communication from the D&U staff. Additionally, there were 2 separate occasions where we were provided incorrect pricing on what we ordered. I requested a detailed summary (invoice) on the full order several times but was unable to receive one until I got the owner involved. I had high hopes for Dillman and Upton but would not recommend them. read more

This place is great! It has been around for over 100 years and the staff is very knowledgeable. If you are looking for high-end home furnishings (doors, windows, kitchens, etc) you will not find a better place. I bought all of the material to build a deck recently and they beat the pricing of the large home improvement stores and delivered better quality goods. read more

I have been going to Dillman and Upton for over 20 years and love the store. People are helpful and good to work with. It is one of the few hardware stores I can go into and not be talked down to. I am a woman with a lot of building experience, but most places (Home Depot in particular) talk to me like I have no idea what I am doing. They usually ask me who is going to do the work or tell me that I can't handle a tool due to it's weight....ugh. I am not incompentant and I know my abilities/limits. Anyway, D & U has a great selection of quality products, order unique things for me that I can't find anywhere else and have a great delivery policy. Yes, they do get very busy and sometimes you have to wait at the paint counter as the other review mentioned... But they are worth it. D&U recently sold to me and installed new Anderson windows. The installers (Kurt and crew) were on time and efficient. The job site was left spotless. Everything tidied up. Old windows and wood removed. The installation looks great. All caulking is smooth and consistent (professional). D&U were priced competitively. Very happy with this local store. I was in this store a few days ago, on a Saturday, to buy stain for a deck. When I got to the paint desk, there was no one there. I had to ask the "concierge" (yes, they really have a "concierge") twice, and it still took ten minutes for someone to arrive. This person, a middle-aged man, then proceeded to tell me how he doesn't know much about paint, since he usually "doesn't work at the paint desk." So I told him I knew exactly what I wanted. Before he began to mix the stain I asked for, however, another customer arrived at the paint desk, apparently someone who had been in the store earlier the same day, and he recognized, someone who didn't get what they wanted. Without a word to me, this employee put this customer in front of me, and began working on his purchase!!! I couldn't believe it. I said something to the employee about it, but he didn't care, so I left, telling him I would go to Home Depot instead - and I did - getting the same product there and without a problem. After I left the store though, I was so upset, I decided to call and tell the manager about my experience. I called 3 times. The first two times, I was put on hold for several minutes and then sent into the general voicemail box. The third time, the "concierge" told me "no manager was available". I could not believe it. First, their employee couldn't have cared less about me as a customer, and then there was no manager willing to take a complaint call from a customer. The problem with this place is that, even though "they've been around for over 100 years", it's a country club atmosphere inside. Everyone stands around talking behind the main desk at the back of the store, and it is impossible to get help. And then when you do get help, you don't know what you're going to get. Also, if you do get what you need, then you have to go to the back of the store to pay for it!!! This is the most customer unfriendly construction goods store that I as a contractor have ever been to. And I won't be back. read more

We originally decided to hire this company for their reputation and history in our area. We are all about supporting small businesses in the area. Our experience has been riddled with constant disappointment. Communication with subcontractors has been horrible. They have made mistakes with measurements, and each subcontractor has left a large detail out during each phase of construction. We feel that we have had to take over as the contractor, and we have been met with excuse after excuse. We have been waiting for the last 8 weeks for issues to be fixed, and feel like we are not important to them anymore. I guess after two payments toward the job they do not mind just leaving the little guy to wait. Our patience has worn thin, and we do not want this to happen to anyone else. read more

I loved the fact that this is a local business and it has a great reputation. However, I ended up very disappointed. My window job was started at the beginning of August and is not yet complete at mid-December. The windows came in damaged, the parts weren't all there, to schedule installation and re-works -- you had to work with 3 different people at the store to get it done. What a joke. Ordered wood and it showed up damaged (even the truck driver said "I wouldn't accept that") D&U said they cant take it back because it was special order (really? WTF?) its been 2 weeks waiting for the replacement. Now its there in the building but the truck driver is too busy with other deliveries. Deck build has come to a screeching halt. read more
