March 5th, 2026. I…read moream extremely upset by my experience at J & J Ace Hardware, 2015 Auburn Rd, Utica, MI. I went in to return a fuse detector today that failed to detect current in 4 out of 10 outlets. The floor manager, Gabby, tested it on a single power strip at the counter, said "It works for me," and then told me I "bring items back all the time" and that I am "waisting $15 of hers." I've been a loyal customer for years, rarely returning anything, "if anything," yet I was publicly accused, ridiculed, and repeatedly told to "leave the store" in front of other customers. She insisted that it was me, and as a person of my race, it felt like I was being unfairly judged and stereotyped. The humiliation of being singled out, accused, and dismissed like this in front of strangers is something I will never forget. No one should ever be treated this way, accused, humiliated, or judged because of their race. Because of this experience, I will never return to this store. I hope management takes this seriously so no one else has to experience this kind of pain, embarrassment, and treatment. It's amazing how things change over time. I've been a customer for over five years. It's been great up until now.

I love their trash cans. My mom actually bought one from here. The Brute ones are amazing and cheap. Great for yard and trash. They have a large section for paint and wood supplies. Anything you can think of, they have. All the the necessary tools as well. Even ladders for outside work, painters, or anyone. One of my favorite things was the storage bins. Perfect for storing away things taking up space. They have many other sections like plumbing, automotive, and hardware. A useful area for me is the doorknobs and padlocks. I was looking for new ones. We also saw lots and lots of tooks for everything. Their biggest section may have been lawn. The lawn area have sprinklers, tools, weedwackers, blowers, lawn mowers, hose, bird feeders, plant food, insect control, fertilizer, grass chemicals, and grass seed. They also have grills and propane. Some of the tools are useful for yard work such as shovels and rakes. It's seems like a great place to buy painting and lawn items more than anything else. I did see some items priced higher than other stores like the cleaning supplies. They do also have some cheap steals.

Back in 2010/11 I spent a few months managing an apartment building near here. I was in 3rd Ave…read moreHardware at least 3 or 4 days a week, and sometimes 5 or 6. A couple of times I had to make multiple trips in one day. The staff was always professional and helpful, and almost always had what I needed, which is saying a lot since I managed an old 50-unit building that needed a lot of things for a lot of problems. Sometimes I would grab the wrong thing, and it was never a problem bringing it back and exchanging it for the right thing. Sometimes my boss would get a bit behind in paying for it all, and they would gently remind me, and the ol' slumlord would send them a check from Florida. They were cool but firm about it. It seemed to be a situation they'd been through many times before. They have homey touches here - a small tv on the counter that's always showing something. A fridge with Faygo in the can. My favorite thing about 3rd Ave Hardware is the bicycle selection. In the warmer months there's a whole row chained together on the sidewalk out front. Old ten speeds, 70s 3 speeds, cruisers, mountain bikes, etc. But, wait, there's more inside! Another row between the front door and the register and still more up and down the cramped aisles! (3rd Ave Hardware could really use a more spacious locale.) The prices won't break the bank either. I just bought my second bike from there - a green mountain bike from CCM, that Canadian company that makes hockey equipment. It's a pretty sweet bike for $100. My last one was, too. It was an old 70s 3 speed with a big comfy seat and a glistening orange paint job that just looked like candy. Too bad it got ripped off. Oh well, that's life in the D. I won't pack it in, and I'm glad 3rd Ave won't either. I'm only knocking them down one star because of their paint selection. It's lousy and overpriced. Go somewhere else for paint.

The estimate was provided after…read moreStuart came to our home to view the layout, etc. He was one of the lowest estimates we received; by around $100, and went with him because of the cost and we also knew someone who had hired him several years prior and complimented his woodworking. He cut several baseboards too long, and kicked them forcefully into place, causing corners to split. He said during the estimate he would angle edges, he didn't do this and in the middle of the job, when reminded, he angled some edges, and not others. He seemed frustrated for at least 1/2 of the job, complaining about our layout, known at time of estimate. There were sharp nails left sticking out of the baseboard, and multiple nail holes that were not caulked, so are very visible. Prominent corners were left with gaps. He chipped the door casing in several areas and did not rectify it. Several corners were not matched up/aligned. He smeared paint from the baseboard painting on the floor, quite a few areas were left dirty. He scratched some of our walls putting the longer baseboard pieces in, leaving white marks on our darker paint (very noticeable,) white paint drops were left on our flooring and wall from baseboard painting. He locked himself out the 2nd day, causing interruption of an important work meeting, which he was informed about ahead of time. The top baseboard caulking was inconsistent, and nails, dust and other debris were left at the end of the job, easily scratching our new hardwood floors and left out for our pet to walk through and us to clean up. He did not initiate a final walkthrough and rushed us when we initiated one. We paid him the agreed amount and a tip due to our layout. After reviewing the work again when he left, we saw many areas of subpar work. He came out later that week to correct what we pointed out, it was better, but nowhere near quality work. We were considering staining toe board and he brought over some stains he had for us to try, that was nice of him. We had beautiful new hardwood floors and instead of the baseboards finishing and upgrading the look it did the opposite. Overall, we were very upset with his lack of quality work and had to hire another contractor to redo unacceptable work. Absolutely cannot recommend.

My wife and I decided to have the fence replaced, but didn't know who to call. I will add that it's a known fact that fences of any kind are expensive to have installed. I mulled over the thought of ripping out the old fence and building a new one (how hard could it really be?), then I realized how much labor would be involved. I also have a dog, so fence down time was a factor here. A couple of neighbors had Statewide install a fence for them. We were luckily enough to be able to see their work before giving them a jingle. The initial quoting process was pretty easy. The consultant came out and measured the lot. He then gave us options with regard to materials and layout. He also gave us ballpark dollar and time estimates based on our selections. This quote took place toward the middle of 2020, so lumber was already a little more expensive...and there was a longer wait time for it. We decided to go with Statewide based on reviews that we read, the work they did on neighborhood fencing as well as their professionalism and courtesy. Yeah, they're expensive, but they build the fences from scratch based on your exact specifications. Statewide came out the week before Christmas 2020 and installed the fence. I was very impressed with the quality of the build as well as the cleanup after the job. The work crew was professional and dedicated to completing the job with quality in mind. I truly appreciate the work they did, especially during the holidays when the temperatures were consistently cold. If you're in the market for a fence, I'd recommend giving Statewide a call. Like I said, they're a little more on the pricey side, but the quality of their work is fantastic. This is one of those cases where you're going to get what you pay for. They removed my old fencing as well as a lot of the concrete left behind. They cleaned everything up very well and I'm extremely happy with the end product. Thanks for reading! - Brian S.

They are simply the best home improvement contractor we have ever worked with. At the suggestion of our neighbor - a retired GM power train engineer and total perfectionist - we first used Dillman & Upton on a medium sized project replacing the entire front entryway. Based on that experience, we hired them to do a major renovation of the kitchen, foyer and guest bath. This was a very big one for us. All we had were some ideas and magazine pictures. They took it from there. Design, materials, layout, options, pricing, and then made it happen. People showed up when they said they would, did what they said they would do, and followed up as necessary every time. They have done an excellent job, on time and within budget, and were unfailingly courteous and considerate of us, our schedules and our home. Thanks especially to Lindsey (designer), Rick (construction coordinator), Pete ("master carpenter" doesn't say it all), Rob (wood floors look awesome), Scott (electrician who fixed my disastrous attempt to install a dining room chandelier and "wouldn't charge for that"), and the tile guy whose work is just perfect. The installation process was long, disorganized, and full of unnecessary delays. The person who came out to measure forgot to template the riser for our basement bar, which immediately stalled the project. Later, (after one rescheduled install due to staffing issues), an installation crew refused to enter the house after being instructed to use the basement entrance in the back. They left without completing any work. That decision alone pushed our remodel back another two weeks and disrupted the schedules of our other contractors. When installers finally returned, it was around 5:00 p.m. just before the Fourth of July weekend. Instead of simply completing the job, they immediately started making excuses about why they couldn't install the riser and suggested another reschedule. Fortunately, my painter was there and called them out, making it clear there was no reason the work couldn't be completed. They ended up installing it, allowing the rest of the project to finally move forward. If you're coordinating a remodel with multiple contractors and working on a timeline, I would not recommend Hard Rock Stone Works. The lack of communication, poor project management, and repeated delays turned what should have been a straightforward installation into a frustrating experience.
