This is my go-to neighborhood hardware store. It's close to me and they always seem to have what I need, despite not being a big box store. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The prices are definitely above the big box stores, but the proximity and staff knowledge make up for the additional cost. read more

I didn't have a screwdriver to fix my loose oven door handle, so I stopped by Ace on the way home from work today. The young man at the tool counter helped me pick the correct screwdriver by looking at a (not so great) picture on my phone. The T 20 x 4" helped me get the handle fixed quickly. Thanks! read more

Update to a prior post from 16: Cramped feeling but cleaner than before hardware store. More bright as well. The staff was also more polite and helpful. Small high dollar value items are in locked display cases, which make it very hard to see sizes. I asked an employee and they have a theft problem. But overall better. They also have a veteran reserved parking space next to the handicapped space, which is nice. read more

My husband has gone here for making copies of keys. They have a machine but it's manned, not an automated kiosk. He's also purchased some bolts and screws for some of his inside doors at his office, which is just down the street. Service is always quick and efficient here. read more

I love this place. First time visit was excellent. First, the staff answering the phone was pleasant and helpful. Once I arrived, the staff was so helpful and patient, with things I knew nothing about, they gave helpful instructions really taking time to offer advice, and tips. The store was clean and well lit and had a lot of merchandise I don't normally see in a big box store. This will be my go-to spot from now on. I prefer supporting local business, shopping small and Scheer's Ace has earned my loyalty. read more

I'm a fan of ACE nationally. Full disclosure: I worked for one in DC. They are individually owned, some in groups of stores by one owner. While there are overall expectations, each has their own standards. This particular store is Far Below average. They clearly do not do national Customer Service training (no magic questions here), show no interest even in regular customers, and did not pick up on the fact that I -as another small business owner- was going out of my way to shop there. They just didn't care. I have been going there regularly for six months. Today they declined a small coupon because it didn't have their store name it. I get that is their prerogative. But managers can override that for good customers. Apparently I'm not good enough. I'll be going to Home Depot on 7 mile where April made sure I got the discount I qualified for (that I didn't know about) and will like treat me like the valued customer I am. read more

I'm giving this store one star but it's only for one good reason! We shop here a lot and the staff and register people are friendly and helpful, EXCEPT, if you have to get anything ok'ed by the manager, you will encounter The Beast With The Helmet Hair. She's sour and condescending. Be sure to catch her when she's on her way to take a cigarette break for added tension! On several occasions, her approval was needed for a return and she kept running off and not waiting to see the transaction through so the counter help have to keep calling her back, each with an extra huff. Just because I can buy 300 varieties of screw or sprinkler at the big box home improvement stores doesn't mean I'm saving money or time. The local Lowes and Home Depot leave me cold for selection, and Ace is slowly hollowing out a space for home improvement in my life. For one, it wins for location and convenience. The only way it could be better is occupying my basement, a helpful aproned associate popping out to suggest why my sink is gurgling or where that odd squeak noise came from. Ace's prices are a bit higher than average, but consider they roll in expertise and honest opinions. When my garbage disposal motor gave out, the limited household experience in mechanical repairs led us to Home Despot for advice. Try standing in an aisle of new garbage disposals and lots of arcane tools, guessing which you need. A moderately fancy kit didn't fix the problem, and our sink went unloved. I should've gone to Ace in the first place. A $2 part, a helpful suggestion, and 20 minutes of fumbling legwork produced a working disposal. The associate even suggested an alternative if that didn't do the trick, for an almighty $5 more. They carry just about everything here from bark mulch to 5/8" screws and rainbow-hued ropes or cat beds. Ferndale lacks for a megastore like Meijer or an all-in-one in general, which means Ace has a lock on dealing with household goods and needs. Great customer service all around beats the rare few drones who can never be found when you need them. This hardware store hosts Ladies' Nights, supports local initiatives, and actively participates in the community. You can choose where to spend your hard earned money, but consider popping into Ace if you're from around the Ferndale area. They're a hardworking group who adds to Nine Mile Road. read more

This is my second favorite local store after Banana Republic. At this Ace location you can find: nuts, bolts, birdseed, and even things likes pot and pans. They have it all, which makes it convenient place to shop. On a recent visit, I was even able to buy butchers twine.. yes butchers twine.. Who would have ever thought I would find this item at Ace. BTW I was unable to buy butchers twine at two local grocery stores. The service is prompt and friendly. This Ace IS ACE in my book! read more

I'll admit, I'm having a bit of a 5-star review day with Yelp, but when I saw the opportunity to review this place on the bottom of the screen I had to pounce on it. This place is a great alternative to the Madison Heights' Lowe's/Home Depot district, especially for those of us that would like to shop a bit closer to our homes (I live less than two miles from here)... The service in the store is startlingly attentive, almost to a Twilight-zone degree. I mean that in the best way however, these guys must be getting paid more than the drones at Lowe's or something because they seem genuinely happy to be working there and help you. Also, for its size, the selection of items is actually pretty good. The only drawback are the prices... This place currently displays two dollar-signs for a reason... I once checked the price on a wheelbarrow here and pretty much laughed out loud. But on the other hand, friendly service and proximity are worth a lot to me, so I swing by here almost weekly to pick up whatever that tool is that I haven't swiped from my parents yet. read more

There are two nearby hardware stores both of which are ACE. The 9 mile Oak Park store outshines the Madison Heights location by far. The 9 mile store is clean and well organized with a ton of helpful, warm and friendly staff. Their merchandise is well stocked and I usually find what I need. Last visit I went looking for some spray paint in a very specific shade that I had found at the Hunt's Livonia location. The Oak Park store didn't carry it but they were kind enough to help me look for it in their vast spray paint selection....seriously they had a ton of spray paint. I picked up a few other supplies and checked out a happy customer. This is a great local hardware if you don't want to make the trip to the Depot but you may pay a little more on certain items. read more

Hi I have been shopping at Ace for a long time. I just thought how nice it would be if other people knew how great the service is there on 9 mile road in Oak Park. Whatever they have on sale they always have it. I was there this week looking for something to buy my husband for his birthday. The people who work there always act like they enjoy there job and there happy to help you. I have to say it's really refreshing and that kind of service don't happen everyday no matter how much money your spending. A nice place to go and buy or take some time out and just look around. This store has the worst customer service. The staff in the lawn care area are not helpful and if you ask someone a question who doesn't work in that section they blow you off. Today I went into the store and asked for lawn soil the employee asked me a question about the soil and was pointing me in the wrong direction. Another staff member made a rude comment about me being on my phone. These people are incompetent.I went to the Royal Oak hardware store the soil was easy to find and the customer service was excellent. read more

First thing I saw when I drove up was a sign reserving a space right next to the door for Veterans and thanking us for our service. I've never seen that before. I was so appreciative for them to show respect for Veterans. Once inside, the staff was so polite and helpful. really these people have helped make my house a home. i think i go here at least once every weekend. this weekend i found myself there three separate times. heres why i like it there. its a hometown feel kinda place at the end of my road. they always help me. and let me tell you i'm difficult. i hate hardware stores and usually have no idea of the actual name of the tool i need. i just go up to whichever associate i see and describe it to them. they've never been unable to help me. the prices are obviously a little higher than say home-depot, but they have as many people working as a home depot and are 1/8 the size. the discount card helps and we've already gotten coupons in the mail. love, juston read more

The people at this store actually know what they are doing. I was installing a basement sink and went to Lowes for a special connector. The salesperson said i needed a $6.00 connector. After I installed it water sprayed everywhere. Turns out they gave me a compression fitting. I went to Ace to ask what I did wrong and the super nice plumbing guy gave me an .89 cent part that worked perfectly. Stick with your neighborhood Ace! read more

always good service and usually have what I need - at a higher price that Home Depot or Lowes for sure! But I come here to save time not money. They usually have some unique holiday items that you won't find elsewhere. One down side is that if you buy one of the unique items at this Ace you must return it to this Ace. They are individually owned or ??? and store policy won't accept returns on anything they don't carry. This upset me when I purchased a piece of garden art in Bay City and later decided I didn't like it but my local Ace wouldn't take it back and so I was stuck with it. read more

I'm very disappointed with Scheer's Hardware, I needed a plumber years ago and I was recommended a guy named Timothy. I use the plumber for light plumbing work, through the years. Until two years ago he installed a garbage disposable, which never work, he claims the day he installed that there was an electrical problem at the switch outlet, I never had an issue with the outlet before. I talk to one of the managers about the guy they recommended to me, I wasn't satisfied with his work. Now, a recent plumbing company came to my home and told me that the garbage disposal didn't work, and it was making a humming sound he said it was defective, used all this time I didn't know, I never use the disposable, I wasted my money and the plumber had the nerve to tell me again "I told you, you needed an electrician,". I said to him you installed the disposal that should have work before you left my house. I'm done with that hardware for referring me to this guy, and besides, they act like you're not in the store when you enter. read more

I LOVE this Hardware store it is a staple in my city and my go to place for all of my home and garden supplies. I cant say enough about the staff I can always find help and knowledgeable answers from all of the staff member they are very friendly and genuinely seem happy to be there. This store is very clean and check out is always a breeze I hate to be in the middle of a project and need an item and run to a big box hardware store and it take a hour to get back home from the drive over walk from the parking lot finding someone to help you with a question or locating the item then standing in line to pay and then the long walk back to the car and the drive back home by then Im over the project. But When I visit this Ace Hardware I enjoy what they call "Rock Star Parking" Every space is near the door! Im in and im out and on with my project. Oh and I wont even get started in the home decor items they have there buyer has a great eye! read more

They have an average selection of hardware & tools, but the expertise of the staff seems to have stagnated in 1959. They don't understand (and disdain) the metric system, haven't a clue what the markings on fasteners mean, (or even why they're there) and their advice about electrical components is often obsolete & dangerous. The same selection and much better service is available at other nearby Ace Hardware stores. read more

This is a great store if you need help or have questions about home projects. They have a service desk that is glad to help explain plumbing issues, electrical repairs or anything else. When you walk in you can ask the helpers ( not the cashiers) where something is and they walk you right to it. The cashiers are usually friendly also. Decent selection, prices are good, maybe a little more expensive than HD or Lowes but here you get service and answers. It is my go-to hardware store. read more
