Super down to earth hardware store on gardenia. Entrance and parking is in the back. They have every kind is screw you might around the house. I needed some specific sized and length screws for a cabinet. They have an assortment of tools, paints and wall repair, signs, garden decor and even Royal Oak historical books. The staff that sit in the center can help you find whatever you need. There's one cashier or checkout by the door. The only downside of the parking is it's right turn only. Walking in here is like teleporting into decades past where true, independently owned hardware stores were an important part of the community before big box stores started to push them all out of business. The people in here are friendly and helpful. When one of the valves on our hundred year old hot water heating system sprung a leak in the middle of winter, we loaded up our newborn and the valve that I had managed to twist off and headed into the store. They had everything there to re-pack the valve and get it in great shape (the old packing had become brittle and started to leak), I think they only charged us half a dollar for the packing material. "If you don't see it, ASK" is the one thing to know about this amazing store. One evening I suddenly needed a higher powered light dimmer, more than the 600 watt dimmers everybody sells. So I looked for one there but did not find it right away. An employee saw my search and dismay and asked what I needed. I explained about needing a dimmer for 800 watts of light bulbs. Just a minute or two was the response: how many do you need? he asked. Just one. A bit later he returned with a 1500 watt dimmer. We don't sell many so they are not on display, but we have them. And a problem was solved. And then another time I needed an unusual kitchen faucet. The big stores had none. Frentz had three styles! The place is a life-saver for a professional handy-person, and those who may need an unusual item. They save me a couple of times each month. AND, when I ask, they do not need to seek help on their cell phone. Even the young employees know where the stock is!!! read more

Been here many times before. Best little hardware store in the area. Rate if they don't have what you need. Today i brought in my garden hose spigot because it was leaking (need new gaskets). We couldn't get the screw out and one gentleman took it in back and was able to undo the screw to get to gaskets. He basically rebuilt it for just over $20 (parts and labor), which I found to be a great deal. Otherwise I'd have to call a plumber. The employees here alway give great customer service. read more

This is hands down the best hardware store I have ever used in my 51 years. If I could give it more than five stars I would. They have a little of everything and a lot of the basics. The selection, variety and quality of their merchandise is top notch. It amazes me every time I go there how much stuff they manage to fit in a relatively small space and yet keep it well organized. But the best aspect of Frentz is the service. There is always someone available to help no matter how busy they are, and the entire staff knows the store inside and out. Cute old school Mom & Pop Hardware store. Why is it listed as "nursery gardens" I have no idea. I'm all for supporting the local businesses and F & S's has a great hardware selection. Everything is neat and organized and if you can't find anything, just wander in and within 5-10 mins, someone will ask you if you need assistance. Talk about old school customer service! Some oddities like a steel grill brush will cost like $1 more and other kitchen appliances like a toaster cost $5 more but you should be buying that from Target or something. They've surprised me with hard to find items like oil lamp fluid and wick replacement which Target and Lowe's didn't even have. Take that big corporate chains! read more

I live in an old house in Royal Oak and I've had to repair a lot things that were either installed long ago or broke down. Anything I've ever needed a part for or a solution to, they've had it. I don't even know proper terminology for half the things I describe, but they know the answer. Like most independent hardware stores, their prices aren't as low as Home Depot, but their advice, knowledge and willingness to help you fix a problem makes it well worth the trip to Frentz. Frentz is one of those places that's been in business forever and has *everything* you'd expect to find in an old hardware store. Nuts and bolts? Screws? Wall anchors? Everything you need, in dozens of labeled bins. Paint and varnish? Of course. Mantles for your Aladdin lamp? Check. Canning jars? All the sizes and styles. Electrical hardware? They've got all the wire, socets and switches you need, as well as the biggest assortment of wall plates I've ever seen. Stainless, white, brown, cream, large, small,.. they even have plates to fit the old switches and outlets you still see in some of the older houses around here. The staff are great, too. Between Frentz and Durst I don't need to hit the big box stores at all for 90% of my household maintenance needs. read more

This hardware store gets a five star review because it does qualify for all of my hardware and lumber requirements to attain such a review. It is a hardware store and they do not lead you to believe they sell Lumber or any form of it. In fact, they do not, furthermore, there's size limits their inventory to the most minimally sized items a small hardware store can carry. However, this does not break my rule they offer and they stack what they advertise. The next is knowledge on the floor and ease in finding it when needed. While it is very true that on some days you will find better educated staff there are no days you'll find a negligently educated staff. Big box stores to suffer from what I call negative training or the ability from the person you're asking to answer the question that will cause more problems then will be fixed. I have found this too often the case at the warehouses. Lastly, they offer Limited old fashion a hardware services; they recently stopped making screen doors, unfortunately; they will still cut plexiglass as well as multiple glass types and thicknesses. read more

frentz & son's is bomb ass diggity (what?). in a world where it's nearly impossible to find an employee at a big box retailer, frentz makes sure you're never far from the answer you need. they hire high school kids (i think it helps them compete in price with the depot) to work there and the first few times i went... i was approached by some kid with gauge in his ear and tattered arms asking if i need anything. and i must admit the old man in me took over at first... "ugh. this little punk couldn't possibly help me with what i need..." and every time i'm shocked at the knowledge of the kids in this store. they're really amazing. i've had one issue in my time going to this store where the kid had to defer to the old man behind the counter. they'll either have what you need or be able to order what you need. read more

What a GREAT store. I needed a particular drill bit to make drainage holes in ceramic pots so as to facilitate using them for planters.
