Walking in here is like teleporting into decades past where true, independently owned hardware stores were an important part of the community before big box stores started to push them all out of business. The people in here are friendly and helpful. When one of the valves on our hundred year old hot water heating system sprung a leak in the middle of winter, we loaded up our newborn and the valve that I had managed to twist off and headed into the store. They had everything there to re-pack the valve and get it in great shape (the old packing had become brittle and started to leak), I think they only charged us half a dollar for the packing material. Next time you were thinking of heading into Home Cheapo make sure you take a second thought and check out this local business first. read more

The greatest hardware store in the world. They have everything, and staff that is helpful and knowledgable. Always my first stop when I am on a new job. People are saying there is less selection than HD or Lowes, but when it comes to actual hardware, Frentz has a lot more. A huge part of my life for the past 35 years actually. read more

Great store!! They have a lot of inventory and are very knowledgeable. Good location.

Great staff. Very helpful and always willing to help with advice and instructions on a project. Not the huge selection of a Home Depot or Lowes, but you know what? Who cares. Everytime I have come it, they have what I need. From paint and finishes, to hardware, to gardening, to tools. Do they cost a bit more? Sure, but they make up for it with great personal service. This is my go-to hardware store PS - The magnets for sale at the couter are very cool, but thats just me. read more

Super down to earth hardware store on gardenia. Entrance and parking is in the back. They have every kind is screw you might around the house. I needed some specific sized and length screws for a cabinet. They have an assortment of tools, paints and wall repair, signs, garden decor and even Royal Oak historical books. The staff that sit in the center can help you find whatever you need. There's one cashier or checkout by the door. The only downside of the parking is it's right turn only. A great and convenient hardware store for many of your household repairs and needs. read more

Frentz is my go-to. Staff are very knowledgeable and efficient. It's so easy to quickly pop in, get what you need, and be on your merry way. They've helped me find solutions many, many times. read more

Been here many times before. Best little hardware store in the area. Rate if they don't have what you need. Today i brought in my garden hose spigot because it was leaking (need new gaskets). We couldn't get the screw out and one gentleman took it in back and was able to undo the screw to get to gaskets. He basically rebuilt it for just over $20 (parts and labor), which I found to be a great deal. Otherwise I'd have to call a plumber. The employees here alway give great customer service. read more

"If you don't see it, ASK" is the one thing to know about this amazing store. One evening I suddenly needed a higher powered light dimmer, more than the 600 watt dimmers everybody sells. So I looked for one there but did not find it right away. An employee saw my search and dismay and asked what I needed. I explained about needing a dimmer for 800 watts of light bulbs. Just a minute or two was the response: how many do you need? he asked. Just one. A bit later he returned with a 1500 watt dimmer. We don't sell many so they are not on display, but we have them. And a problem was solved. And then another time I needed an unusual kitchen faucet. The big stores had none. Frentz had three styles! The place is a life-saver for a professional handy-person, and those who may need an unusual item. They save me a couple of times each month. AND, when I ask, they do not need to seek help on their cell phone. Even the young employees know where the stock is!!! read more

They stock just about everything And less expensive too. I needed a can of compressed air for my disgusting computer. There and back in 15 minutes. Thanks, guys! read more

We have used Frentz & Sons for at least 25 years and always get great results. That might explain why it was voted one of the top 10 hardwares in the US. As Tyrus would say "Nuff Said" read more

Great local hardware store. I just moved into the area and have been every day, sometimes twice a day to pick up things I need and the staff has been consistently very knowledgeable and helpful. read more

Frentz & Son's Hardware - Utilities Near Me - Royal Oak, Michigan

I was just running in to pick up a smoke detector, and in my short time there, I was approached to offer assistance no less than three times. I was impressed by the attention to detail put into this small business, not only with its selection and layout, but also it's signage and attempts to encourage social distancing. read more

This family owned hardware store in Royal Oak is well known among locals. Could it be their great selection of plumbing goods, paints, and general hardware? Could it be because the service is impeccable, the staff freakishly smart? Guess what, it's a combination of the two. This hardware store has been sitting on Main Road for decades and it doesn't seem like it will be going anywhere soon. Need a key made? Paints mixed or just some general cleaning supplies? Frentz and Sons is your place. The prices are reasonable and it feels good to support a family owned business when everything is being taken over by huge corporations. read more

Cute old school Mom & Pop Hardware store. Why is it listed as "nursery gardens" I have no idea. I'm all for supporting the local businesses and F & S's has a great hardware selection. Everything is neat and organized and if you can't find anything, just wander in and within 5-10 mins, someone will ask you if you need assistance. Talk about old school customer service! Some oddities like a steel grill brush will cost like $1 more and other kitchen appliances like a toaster cost $5 more but you should be buying that from Target or something. They've surprised me with hard to find items like oil lamp fluid and wick replacement which Target and Lowe's didn't even have. Take that big corporate chains! read more

This is hands down the best hardware store I have ever used in my 51 years. If I could give it more than five stars I would. They have a little of everything and a lot of the basics. The selection, variety and quality of their merchandise is top notch. It amazes me every time I go there how much stuff they manage to fit in a relatively small space and yet keep it well organized. But the best aspect of Frentz is the service. There is always someone available to help no matter how busy they are, and the entire staff knows the store inside and out. Puts the staff at the big box stores to shame. I've been going to Frentz since 2008 when I bought my first house and they've never let me down. read more

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST! You can take literally ANYTHING hardware related into Frentz & Son's and they can either help you replace it, fix it, or rebuild it. It's incredible! Always friendly, always helpful. I hope they stay around forever. I can't imagine fixing anything without them. read more

Best service around. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Prices are competitive with big box stores and much of the hardware can be purchased by unit, without having to buy more than you really need. I'm fortunate to live within a couple of miles of this store. read more

I live in an old house in Royal Oak and I've had to repair a lot things that were either installed long ago or broke down. Anything I've ever needed a part for or a solution to, they've had it. I don't even know proper terminology for half the things I describe, but they know the answer. Like most independent hardware stores, their prices aren't as low as Home Depot, but their advice, knowledge and willingness to help you fix a problem makes it well worth the trip to Frentz. They've saved my bacon in many repair situations where Google and YouTube couldn't give me the answer. Don't let the youth of some of the guys worry you either - they know their stuff. read more

How is it that a store smaller than Lowe's can have more stuff than Lowe's? It is the clown car of hardware stores. The one item that I couldn't find at Ace or Lowe's or Home Depot was on the shelf here and at a better price than Amazon.com was asking. They have evverythingggg... read more

Best service of all hardware stores. When ever I go into Frentz Hardware I am always asked if I need help....every time....no exceptions. The people who work here are friendly and knowledgeable. The store is always neat and organized. Highly recommended! read more

Chose Frentz hardware over big box store needing two-way hinges for a folding screen. Not only did they have them BUT the young man took the hinge out of the package on his own volition to see how it would work. It worked out perfectly, exactly what was needed. Great service and they had what I needed. Hurray for old time hardware store. Support Frentz! read more

We just moved here and love the scale, selection and service from the folks here. We will drive out of our way to avoid the big box stores!

This place is iconic! Everything you actually need. Nice real deal, old school hardware store. The staff is really helpful and know what they are doing. Another nice thing - they can suggest reputable plumbers, and other professionals for jobs you can't handle or don't want to attempt. The best! read more

Great hardware store with knowledgeable peeps -- not just the "I know which aisle it's in" that generally dominates the big boxes. I have been shopping there since I was a kid (well, I was along for the ride with my mom at first:). It's a great store with great employees who are very helpful. Plus, you're supporting a long-time local biz! Great place. read more

Frentz is one of those places that's been in business forever and has *everything* you'd expect to find in an old hardware store. Nuts and bolts? Screws? Wall anchors? Everything you need, in dozens of labeled bins. Paint and varnish? Of course. Mantles for your Aladdin lamp? Check. Canning jars? All the sizes and styles. Electrical hardware? They've got all the wire, socets and switches you need, as well as the biggest assortment of wall plates I've ever seen. Stainless, white, brown, cream, large, small,.. they even have plates to fit the old switches and outlets you still see in some of the older houses around here. The staff are great, too. Between Frentz and Durst I don't need to hit the big box stores at all for 90% of my household maintenance needs. read more

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place! We were there countless times during our ages-long home reno. It's the kind of hardware store that probably looked how it does now from the very beginning, from the cracked tiles and cramped goods stuffed everywhere. It has everything, if you can just find it, and don't even worry about that because someone who works there knows the precise location of it all. read more

Frenz Hardware has been run by the same family for many decades for the past 40 years I've gone there for about every thing I need from mops to nuts and bolts to lawn's products and knowledgeable people with information about electrical equipment. They carry all kinds of household supplies and will make keys for you and have a assortment of different paints you'll find all the parts are needed at this hardware! A great assortment of plumbing supplies. Unlike the chain stores there is a person to work with you when you come in I've been helped out over the years and appreciate the individual treatment read more

I love this store but please please please could you stop carrying poisonous pesticides such as roundup????

frentz & son's is bomb ass diggity (what?). in a world where it's nearly impossible to find an employee at a big box retailer, frentz makes sure you're never far from the answer you need. they hire high school kids (i think it helps them compete in price with the depot) to work there and the first few times i went... i was approached by some kid with gauge in his ear and tattered arms asking if i need anything. and i must admit the old man in me took over at first... "ugh. this little punk couldn't possibly help me with what i need..." and every time i'm shocked at the knowledge of the kids in this store. they're really amazing. i've had one issue in my time going to this store where the kid had to defer to the old man behind the counter. they'll either have what you need or be able to order what you need. read more

This local neighborhood hardware store is about as good as it gets. They are always friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They assisted me in fixing a leaky toilet and gave me a bunch of tips on how to complete the project. As someone who is not very good at DIY project, the team at Frentz is top notch and always willing to help. read more

This hardware store gets a five star review because it does qualify for all of my hardware and lumber requirements to attain such a review. It is a hardware store and they do not lead you to believe they sell Lumber or any form of it. In fact, they do not, furthermore, there's size limits their inventory to the most minimally sized items a small hardware store can carry. However, this does not break my rule they offer and they stack what they advertise. The next is knowledge on the floor and ease in finding it when needed. While it is very true that on some days you will find better educated staff there are no days you'll find a negligently educated staff. Big box stores to suffer from what I call negative training or the ability from the person you're asking to answer the question that will cause more problems then will be fixed. I have found this too often the case at the warehouses. Lastly, they offer Limited old fashion a hardware services; they recently stopped making screen doors, unfortunately; they will still cut plexiglass as well as multiple glass types and thicknesses. read more

This is one of the last good hardware stores around. I pray they don't get bought out by some cookie cutter franchise!! What a GREAT store. I needed a particular drill bit to make drainage holes in ceramic pots so as to facilitate using them for planters. I consulted several local hardware stores , even taking in "youtube" videos of the project I was doing. They all tried to sell me the wrong tool for the job. However, one phone call to Mr Frentz and he had EXACTLY what I needed and gave me additional pointers. Success! Cute planters for my succulents! Thank you, Frentz & sons! read more

Excellent local resource for hard-to-find hardware and simple parts for home repair / fixes. I have been consistently impressed with the amount of widgets, parts, components and loose hardware that Frentz has on hand. Prices are very reasonable. You also have ability to purchase 1-2 simple parts (nuts, bolts, screws, nails, plumbing parts, washers, etc.) versus an entire box quantity like most other stores. Staff offers very high level of service and is knowledgeable. Adequate free parking. I feel fortunate to have Frentz in our neighborhood as a resource - which is especially imperative if you own an older home. *****QUICK UPDATE: One thing I have encountered is that Frentz closes at 4pm on Sunday. Good for them and their staff, however, most "weekend warriors" work on projects Saturday and Sunday - this is prime time. Wish they were open to 6-7pm; just an observation on a few trips I have made there and found lights out and off to Home Depot / Lowes.**** read more
