This was a new find for us. As new homeowners in the area we are having so much fun renovating. We no longer own a truck, and because of the coronavirus we were a little hesitant to borrow one from a friend to go pick up some wood. We were originally going to go to Menards as they tend to have better quality lumber than Home Depot, but I'm glad we found Durst instead. Durst has high quality lumber for comparable prices, and they deliver for a VERY reasonable fee. The guys who work in the lumber area are extremely knowledgeable and were able to give us good advice for one of our projects. Excellent service. This afternoon I called and spoke with Heather. I asked her about purchasing a 7 ft long piece of Butcher block counter top. She told me I can come in today or tomorrow buy the wood, take it out back and have it cut. I asked her again if I needed to make an appointment or create an order and she said no you can just come in. I then sent my husband on a 40 minute one way trip to pick up the wood to which Heather replied, we don't have the wood but we can order it. She then proceeded to deny stating this to me on the phone. I called her back to explain what I understood her to say and she said that everyone makes mistakes and hung up the phone on me. A more specialized home improvement store with a "mom and pop"-like feel to it. We've been in here a few for various reasons, mainly for lumber each time. The prices are pretty standard for what you would expect when going in to purchase custom cut lumber. Some employees you may ask a question to are a little condescending though when you're talking to them. In no way am I an expert in these types of things, so when I come into a place like this, I expect some pretty basic help. read more

This place is awesome. First thing you need to do is make an immediate right turn and go get yourself some fresh popcorn. Then - you will realize that you are in a "real" hardware store where the workers actually know what they are talking about. In fact, they all know the neighborhood so well that they can tell you by subdivision how your house was built ("you live on "x" street? Still a small town hardware store and lumberyard even associated with ACE. I love free popcorn as much as the next guy (fill up a bag for browsing or the drive home), but it's the staff that makes this store what it is. They are so helpful and actually know what they are talking about. They have experience doing most projects and can help you with a load of lumber, or one 1/2" pan head screw. read more

They are not helpful. I was walking around trying to find a part and not one employee stopped to help me. When I asked for help at the check out counter, they didn't know where the part was I needed. So, they sent me to the other side the store where I came upon at least 5 other employees sitting there chatting and I asked them where the part was. I was then instructed that the part I needed was on the other side of the store, where I had just come from. I was given verbal instruction on where it was, but not 1 of the 5 employees sitting there, offered to show me where to find it. It was very frustrating because they don't seem like they really cared about their customer. This is why people shop at Lowe's and Home Depot. read more

Dated location with incompetent cashiers and rude attitude from them at that. The store is usually unorganized with unhelpful staff. Manager is also clueless when asking about a problem. This your staff issue, not the customers issue. Learn to train them the right way. Don't be rude! Shut down your store if you cannot help customers correctly. This is why people go to Lowe's and Home Depot. Never again will I come to this local store to do business. Berkley residents clearly see this location dropping customer service over the years. I go here because it is close and I can pick something up quick. That's the only reason it is kinda sad. When asking for help it seems like no one knows anything about the right parts needed for a project. My last visit the staff there was not professional. I had been going to Durst since 1999. I stopped going in 2017. The staff is not so polished and can be mean. I know everyone in there recognizes my face like I said I've been going there for several years and I've spent several dollars over those years. I was treated poorly by a cashier and a manager. I won't be going back. A simple mistake that occurred the day before with a purchase were not everything was in the bag from the items I had bought and I asked for a refund for one of the items I was never given but had paid for. Needless to say I was treated as if I was a criminal and lying. Several other good hardware stores in the neighborhood I highly recommend Frentz and sons in Royal Oak. Several brothers own that facility and they are wonderful kind goodhearted people who are extremely knowledgeable. They are far less abrasive and difficult to work with. read more

I'm in the process of painting my livingroom/diningroom/hall and am taking time to stop in the middle of it to write this review. If you're planning to paint, even if you find your color at the Lowes, HD or other location -- take that color swatch to Durst and have them match it in their Royal brand paint. THE BEST paint I have used. Hands down. I have one wall that I changed from pale beige to a deep plum -- and it covered beautifully in 2 coats. And the color is a perfect match to the sample I brought in. I once used the best brand at Lowes and in an effort to cover pale green with pale yellow, it took 5 coats and still didn't look as pure as it should have. How can an expensive "best rated" paint take 5 coats to cover a light color with a similar light color?? Well, I won't have to worry about that ever again. My fiance painted our house with a sprayer and it covered with one coat. Sage green over beige. Solid coverage. It's awesome. With that said, I'm going to head back to it -- cheers! read more

99% of the people are great however their is one lady that works the check out that is totally clueless on any product and is a jerk to you like it is your fault and throws your money at you along with your lumber yard slip. The teenagers have a better grasp on products then this lady who has been there for years. I will just turn around and walk out if I see her next time. I have had it with her crap. read more

This place is awesome. Great selection. The store is well organized so it's not hard to find what you came in for. And as they say, ACE is the helpful place, and these guys rock it. They are always willing to answer any question you ask. They are never snobby or rude to anyone, and they almost always have tips for me on how I can do the project even cheaper than I was planning. Class act business. Oh an the lumber is awesome!!!! Some things are maybe 10% more than big box but it's always straight, dry, and workable. You can get a lot of custom stuff from the lumber yard too like chain link fence by the foot, or half sheets of plywood at half cost. Again, class act. I started going there just for the odd washer or fastener but they are now my go to for just about everything. I hope I never move away from here. I don't know what I would do without them. read more

This was the only company I could find who would cut a piece of wood to a specific dimension under an inch (1"x3/4"x28"). Home Depot and Lowe's wouldn't do it. Durst doesn't even charge extra for cutting the wood; I just paid for the wood (about .93 or something). I give only 4 stars because the person who I gave the original dimensions to sold me a "1x2" piece -- which isn't actually a full inch because it's metric! So I had to go back and purchase a larger size that the cutter could lathe down to one inch. Otherwise, it was good experience. read more

Was in search of a lawn mower wheel and decided to call up to see if they had any in stock. Gave exact size and the gentlemen told me just to bring it up. With Covid I am trying to limit the trips to the store and he would not look to see if they had that size just kept repeating himself in telling me to bring it up. Very dissatisfied with his responses and just hung the phone up after I told him I would rather not make an unnecessary trip. read more

You have to love Durst because it gives you everything you can't get at Home Depot ... knowledgeable people who not only give you the correct parts you need, but they also tell you HOW to do the job. As a matter of fact, one time they lent me a tool that I needed for a job. I asked how much the tool cost and they said, "$200." But they gave it to me and told me to bring it back when I was done with it. You'll never get that kind of service from a big box. The prices may be a little higher than HD, but the information and support you get is worth the extra cost. Plus, if you walk to the back of the store they have a popcorn machine and they'll give you a free bag to munch on while you stroll through the aisles packed with all kinds of treasures. read more

Durst Lumber is connected to an Ace Hardware. Durst has a small town feel in a busy town. You walk in, and see a random stuffed polar bear in a glass box; makeshift cash register areas, homemade mouse pad shelving, and plastic tubing running to the ceiling. Nothing seems quite organized, but it works. It gets the job done. I don't typically purchase lumber, but the process is much easier than fighting with the home depot crowd to get lumber cut up. Pretty much, you go into Ace, tell em what you need cut, they send it over to the lumber yard, and wooollaa! It is cut! The people there are very helpful. What makes me laugh is that, every time I go in, the employees all have some kind of take-out; Chinese, Mexican, pizza etc. at their stations. Those people are always hungry! Ace also has a complimentary popcorn from an old school popcorn maker. It's great. I have no problem spending my dollar here. read more

The best lumber hands down! No searching through 40 boards to find something straight. Fantastic service and they will actually spent time with you to solve a problem at a reasonable cost. Staff are awesome, friendly, and roam the isles to help customers. For a small store (compared to Home depot or Lowes) they have just about everything just in smaller quantities. The best part is you don't have to search an acre of store to find what you need. Yes, when you roam to the back of the store you will find the popcorn. The guys at the back desk will take your order for lumber and you just pick it up in the lumber yard. If you have never used Royal paint you should try it. This is hands down the best paint I have ever used and I have used many brands. Most often one coat coverage. For those negative reviews regarding staff. I have never, ever witnessed any poor behavior towards a customer and I am there several times a week. All I can say is there's always one in the bunch or sometimes you get treated the way you treat others. read more

i heard some really good reviews about this place and i like to shop locally when i can. i called ahead to ask if there was someone there who could help me plan out a front porch deck. the guy i spoke to said "yeah! come on in and we'll get you everything you need!" i thought..great! considering i have no clue what i'm doing aside from the dimensions and basic concept. the guy way overestimated the post size i'd need and underestimated the support beam size and then gave me screws and bolts that were also way too long. i probably would have saved some money if he'd recommended the right materials. i was depending on his assumed expertise and that was my first mistake. i ended up having to make extra trips to various ace hardware locations (which is a whole separate review!) really irritating. also, each piece of wood i bought was $1-2 more than HD. so i spent roughly $100 more than i was hoping to spend. i won't be back :/ update: they also didn't give me enough screws, or bolts and sold me split wood. read more

I love it when I go in with an obscure kind of screw or a part I need for a project and lickity-split, I've got it in the bag and I am home working on my project in no time! Customer service here is the best! Help buying paint, lumber, lighting, lawn and garden and plumbing supplies is great! They have everything in this little store! I feel like I'm in the Mayberry hardware store. There are always great deals and interesting things to look at while browsing the isles. My favorite is grabbing a bag of hot popcorn when I haven't had time to eat while working on a home project. It just hits the spot! If you live in Berkley or Huntington Woods and you haven't been here, you'd better take a jog to Durst. The big chains have nothing on this place! read more

I love this place. Classic hardware store with probably the best lumber in the area. I recently built a shed. Got most of my lumber from Home Depot. Fair enough. Had to quick get a few pieces of lumber here and there and the lumber from Durst was so much straighter and they cut to size to save me money and waste! They have a ton of moldings to pick from and specialty woods. Plus I need a weird size air filter. They order me two, I pay for one and come back in 6 months to get the second one! While they have been cleaning up and reorganizing a bit, even before it was always kind of cool you couldn't make it through some of the isles. Staff has always been helpful. If you want the warm and fuzzies from every face you see there you may not get it but that's OK, it's a hardware store. You'll pay a little more for some things and the same price for others as compared to a big box but it's good stuff. read more

I discovered Durst shortly after buying my house 25 years ago, and since then it's been my first choice for any and all hardware and lumber needs- in fact, a lot of the wood and electrical and plumbing fixtures in my house came from Durst, as did the landscaping timbers in my back yard, and the shed behind my garage. I live close to Durst Hardware. It is convenient and I like supporting a local business. Most of the employees are knowledgeable. My only criticism is in regard to the cashiers. Often, they are young kids who are not trained very well. When someone is taking my money, I don't think its asking too much to be greeted and thanked. Also, I should not have to actually ask to have my items placed in a bag, especially when I have several items. read more
