Quick service, especially since it was a Friday night. Our server was Giacomo(?) And he was incredibly friendly while still being professional. He brought all of our items promptly and at the same time. I got a free drink from checking in and I was happy to do so. We've come here several times and it's always fantastic. Slightly pricey but you can find some good value. I thoroughly enjoyed my Pollo sandwich with jalapeños. I made a reservation on the patio and was promptly seated. We don't eat out often because we have serious sensitivities to wheat and other ingredients. Diego's is one of our favorite restaurants, because they're really clear about what's in the food, and will do everything they can to make sure you get something you'll enjoy and that won't make you sick tomorrow! You'd think that people who can't eat wheat, potatoes and most grains would eat anything else they could find, but -- NO -- we don't eat a huge amount of animal protein, either! Diego's has lots of choices with tofu and the greens and grilled vegetables are plentiful. The wait-staff are knowledgeable and courteous, the owner is friendly and the atmosphere is easy to be in. We didn't have dessert -- too full and not so many choices we could eat, but another time, we'll have the intensely chocolate selection -- or alcohol, and our bill for 2 people was $32. I would have given them 5 stars if we'd gotten the hot sauce before we were almost done eating... but our entrees were so good, we probably didn't need the sauce anyway. They're open until 9:30, too, at least on Fridays! read more

Diego's has exceptional food and is reasonably priced. Their dishes have a wonderful variety of flavors, are creative, fresh, colorful and well presented. The desserts are fantastic. Plus, they don't skimp on the portions. The only thing on the down side is the restaurant is fairly small and booths are a bit tight - but once you settle in you won't notice. My all time fav Grass Valley restaurant! The decor is funky amazing...not your run of the mill oh hum stuff. The food is incredible! My last meal was BBQ'd pulled pork set on top of red beans and rice topped with cheese...slightly spicy (not too much) and delicious! Another fav is the Anchiote Panqueque.....kind of like a big burrito, but the chicken has a South American spice to it, then loaded with rice, roasted veggies and cheese...INCREDIBLE! I truly wanted to like this restaurant but unfortunately that was not the case. First I'd like to say the staff here are fantastic. They are friendly, welcoming and accommodating but the food is horrible. I would have rated this place one star if it wasn't for the great staff. My husband and I both ordered a simple burger and fries. Easy right? Apparently not. When our food arrived, the burgers and the fries were burnt. Because our burgers and everything else on our plate were burnt, over-done and extremely dry, it took us several glasses of water just to choke down what we could. How hard is it to make a burger? Even further of a disappointment was the fact that the bun the burger was served on was burnt as well, which is a shame because the bread they make there and serve as a pre-dinner treat and what they serve their sandwiches on is delicious. How disappointing. This place could be the hidden gem of Grass Valley if only they would invest in some decent cooks. read more

As a vegetarian, I appreciate the freshness and professional preparation of the vegetable dishes and soups among the menu selections at Diegos. I love the portabella sandwich! I have found the servers to be friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The open kitchen tells me that the staff is proud of its food preparation. Diegos can become crowded at times, so I choose my visit to have options among the eclectic dining niches inside or outside. In season, I choose the courtyard setting for lunch. read more

Amazing food! We went for dinner at the recommendation of a local, and were not disappointed. The decor is engaging, with lots of interesting little touches. The staff was pleasant, attentive, and timely. The prices were not extravagant, but the portions were generous and amazingly flavored. The porkfection panqueque was delightful. They will have you at Bacon. I had the key lime pie for dessert, and it was tart and sweet, and one if the best I've had. All in all a great experience. read more

I've lived in this area for over twenty years. If there is an eating establishment with a friendlier atmosphere and more authentic menu I haven't found it. I spend a lot of my time cooking. When the owner joins you for dinner and is willing to discuss the menu, how the items are prepared and is good enough to make adjustments (within reason) to accommodate special dietary needs you've got a winner. The food is expertly prepared (I've enjoyed the Anticucho, Panqueque, Achiote De Pollo, and the Churrasco) the service is friendly and the atmosphere would cause you to believe you might be in a Chilean home enjoying a meal with close friends. The decor is probably best described as eclectic, which adds more fun to the informality of the dining experience. My favorite menu item is the Lamb Anticucho. The Chicken and Beef varieties of this dish are very good, but I am a great fan of well prepared lamb dishes and this one is terrific. Make sure you try it when you visit. read more

Diego's is a personal favorite of our family's, my young kids always enjoy going there. The home made bread is fantastic, and the Lomito is wonderful. My wife is a huge fan of the Panqueque. And when the chocolate bread pudding arrives it's rich and decadent flavors are readily consumed.. We especially love eating there when the weather is good and you can sit out on the patio. My only gripe is occasional slow service, and usually from Diane, one of the owners. Although she's the sweetest gal in the world, she seems to be flustered and forget orders at times. Still, her exuberant, caring, and friendly attitude is a huge part of the reason we continue to go. Would love to see her more in the owner role, greeting patrons, checking on orders, overseeing the staff, etc. Highly recommended! read more

We went to Diego's for dinner on Oct. 7, 2011 and we had a very delicious dinner, good service, great food, reasonable prices and nice ambiance, all in all a nice meal that will be hard to beat. We had the Panqueque, something new for both of us, but we were pleasantly surprised, it was great with the right amount of spices on to make it really tasty. We also liked the decor, a little different but appropriate for a Chilean restaurant. The service was right, food was cooked right and presented on time, the waitress was friendly and took good care of us. Diego's is a restaurant we will visit again, next time we are in Grass Valley. Actually we ate dinner here about 2 years ago, it was good then and hasn't changed, it is still a good place to eat. read more

If you want to be treated like family go to Diegos! The owner, the waitresses and the cooks are all friendly, the waitresses often will sit at your table while taking your order, they make recommendation, do substutions and are very accomodating!! Just like in Chile, they are relaxed and friendly and the food is always wonderful...on abusy nite you might have to wait a bit but it is well worth it!! Okay you time oriented Americans just try to relax and remember that the French take 3 hours to eat a meal! Thus in one of our best restaurants in all of Nevada County!! Have lived in GV-NC since 1990 - how did I not go to Diego's until 2014??? It was SO GOOD. Had their pulled pork, chipotle topped with cole slaw - sweet potato fries on the side. Love the bread and cilantro/onion dip (dipped by the SPOONFUL). D-LISH !! Back again a month later and had the same. MY MOUTH IS WATERING AS I TYPE!! Owner, chef and waitress all SUPER courteous. Diegos is very good and the food is wonderful. Nothing bad to say about the flavors, service, or atmosphere. However as a vegetarian who has been coming to Diego's for years we will likely never return. I found out from a friend of mine who worked in the kitchen during high school that the bread they bring out before your meal has chicken broth in it. On multiple occasions we have let the waitress know that we are vegetarian and to please only bring us dishes that are meat free. For years they have always brought us the bread rolls that contain meat. It is frustrating because you don't think about bread having meat inside it so it is unexpected when not made clear to the customer. After we asked a waitress about this because we wanted to find out if it was actually true, they denied it profoundly and said if we had more questions we would need to talk to the owner. We then asked a different waitress who said that yes they do indeed put meat in their bread. This is amazing because Nevada county has a very high population of vegetarians or vegans who care about what ingredients go Into their food. As a trendy restaurant they should be more transparent. read more

We have been to Diego's many times and have always liked their food and funky, friendly atmosphere - BUT tonight was a pretty disappointing experience. After we (4 of us) had been seated, the server came and asked if we could move to make room for a larger party that just came in. No problem. The server nicely said that she would comp us an appetizer for being so accommodating. When the bill came, she said she was sorry, but she couldn't comp it after all, because it was a "special" appetizer. No offer to comp a drink or two, or take a token amount off the bill. Then we noticed we were charged two dollars more for a glass of wine than the price posted on the menu. After pointing out the price on the menu and the bill, the cashier said she would look into it. She came back and said, "Sorry, you had an old menu," (but she was handing out many stating the same price) "the real price - in the computer - is two dollars more." What????? No offer to honor the printed menu price or compensate in any way... It was only 2 bucks, but so tacky on principle. We had brought guests with us, telling them this was a really nice place to eat. They said they would never go back because of the "bait and switch" tactics described above - and will discourage anyone they know from ever eating at Diego's. read more

I selected a night at Diego's that unfortunately coincided with a large concert event taking place a few block away. The result of this nights dining experience can only be described as "Being held hostage"! It took over 75 minutes to receive our food and that was after we gave up dining in house and asked to have it to-go. Culinary chaos at its worst- The staff should warn customers that when crowded be prepared to wait an hour + (if your lucky) We will not be back even though we are locals- Management- take a hard look at setting realistic expectations about service. On first look Diegos is a cute little restaurant with decent reviews. I went one night for dinner with some family. Every meal came out in a strange crepe looking burrito, filled with bland meat and veggies, reminded me of a terrible pot pie put into a crepe wrapper....pretty terrible. I think the best part of the meal were these little buns they put out for you. At first I thought it was mexican food, but then it reminded me of american. All together it was a disaster and not a single person I went with enjoyed their meal. I would avoid at all costs. The service was also TERRIBLE, we even got a free dessert because the owner and or manager was horrified by how long everything had taken. read more

If you're looking for pretentious or "fancy", don't bother. If you're looking for average or common chain-style Mexican, don't bother. If what you want is an excellent meal, an engaging and helpful staff, an eclectic and creative menu, and fun embiance, Diego's is the best in the area by far. We were living in Rancho Cordova at the time, so we had to drive over an hour to get there and it would be well worth the drive again and again. My wife and I went for our anniversary and had an incredible meal. We enjoyed the mismatched eating utinsels and water glasses, as well as the creative decorations. The seatback of the bench we were seated at was an old sign board! The lighting is warm and pleasant and makes for a comfortable environment. We tried dishes we'd never had or heard of and we were both knocked out by the flavored. I see where other reviewers have mentioned the food being bland or poorly-seasoned and that surprises me since our experience was so different. This is a really fun place with excellent food. We've recently moved to the Bay Area, but we're anxious for a chance to go to Diego's again. read more

I love this place! They sometimes have live music on the patio, and they are always friendly and warm. Blankets for the patio are a considerate homey touch. They have Negra Modelo on tap and delicious sangrias. Generous portions so don't fill up on bread! Also, make sure your bread is cooked enough, as we were served doughey bread one night and our stomachs hurt after dinner. Great dipping sauce for the bread and they will bring you more. You can also ask for a side of the sauce to eat with your meal. Enjoy! read more
