I frequent Panoy restaurant seasonally, sporadically! I eat out a little in both the Bay Area and in Nevada County, CA. I'm submitting a review today because I always enjoy their food, service, and ambience, always delightful, special, and the experience is both home cooked and international, but also super personable (if you frequent) and very casual and fun! I simply today want to note how amazing the very certain, peaking flavors that are still tingling on my lungs, of the basil, chili chemistry, and Lao curry magjick I just experienced last Friday I cannot get off my mind, and body, today of the 4th day past! I admittedly am having an absolute sense of remorse; I am traveling to the Bay Area this upcoming weekend and will miss this Friday dinner at my FAVORITE Lao/Eastern Family Food Restaurant in the world. (I have been to Laos n Thailand, each their own, and Panoy and their family at the restaurant, deliver one of the most authentic Eastern experiences of community, food, and fun in getting to know a very slender, sliver of the magjick that lives in Gold Country California in 2026.) If you have yet to eat (and frequent, perhaps) Panoy, go directly in return or for your first time, and experience the fresh, rejuvenating invigorating palate Panoy brings to their community and extended family they share their business with. I'll be bringing my extended Bay Area friends and family there, as they visit me, home. Given the substantial Lao community and businesses in Sacramento, I expected better at Panoy Bistro. Big disappointment! I know what Lao food is supposed to be like. And the food here is whatever, surely NOT authentic Lao food. Lao Sausage - A tiny sausage with papaya salad kind of sauce with onion and cabbage and STALE peanuts... Papaya salad - the inner part of the papaya cut into thick slices was used. Normally that part is not used in papaya salad. Lemon (not even lime) slices are thrown in. And again the STALE peanuts... Sticky rice - tiny portion of LUKEWARM broken sticky rice... Service was SO SO. The young lady who waited on all tables, only smiled when she handed me the receipt! Authentic Lao food? Totally would have given the place four stars, except for the service. I was not pleased with my server as she never stopped by to see how I enjoyed my food or asked me IF I needed anything or thank me or bye at dropping off the check. She just put the check at the end without saying something, and I am usually a very good tipper.... First time in a long time I have tipped that low. I love that they have an outdoor seating area, since I had my dog with me. Luckily I came with a friend so she could go inside to order for us. Food was delicious and they give pretty big portions. I ordered the bbq pork and drunken noodles. I had leftovers for sure. read more

I Visited Panoy with friends for an early birthday dinner. I love Thai food and this Laotian restaurant did not disappoint! The Lao Garlic Noodles were flavorful and so delicious, I finished every bite! My dilemma now is the fact that I live out of state and I am going to be craving these noodles regularly. The last two times I went to this place, I was meet with a very unfriendly woman...who was almost mute. She looked like something was really wrong. My friend and I wondered about it because she looked totally depressed. The food here is normally excellent but the customer service is weird. They did not serve beer and drinks any more which made us wonder what has happened since the bar next to the restaurant was normally where the beverages, alcoholic that is, came from. This woman who served us looked so depressed that we were honestly concerned. She did not even seem to care about tips. I think she needs some help. I hope she is not getting abused. read more

They have one waitress for all the inside tables and all the outside tables. She is also the hostess. Food is decent. Pretty authentic. Cleanliness is good only because I can tell they use cleaning products but don't rinse them. Everything is sticky. Menus, the floor, tables, chairs. It's because they don't properly rinse the cleaning products. But, at least you know they are cleaning. I'll go back. read more

We're so glad we found this gem of a restaurant on our weekend in the area. We ordered two appetizers, a curry, and two orders of rice and it was a perfect dinner for two. Really poor unfortunately. Everything was really dry and/or really salty. The driest rice I've ever had which we had to throw away. The beef in the Vientiane beef was almost like jerky, as was the chicken in the fresh rolls. If it was affordable like Laotian food usually is it wouldn't have been as bad, but the beef dish alone was $20. The pad Kee mao (drunken noodles) were ok, but nothing special and basically just noodles, meat and a couple of bits of broccoli. read more

Consistently fabulous flavors! Great ambience and the owners and servers are friendly and remember you. But, most of all- great food!

Waited a very long time for the server to approach the table like 20 minutes, but people be patient! Like 5 tables had sat at once. Your patience will pay off. Everything is so fresh and delicious. Wish I could remember everything we ordered but like 5 dishes. Also server hilarious. read more

Panoy serves spectacular Laotian food! Their curries are especially great--try the pineapple curry. VERY complex flavors--this is authentic Laotian food--delicious! If crowded, the service tends to be slow, but it's worth the wait. We avoid the busy lunch and dinner hours. read more

The hostess looked miserable, barely said a word, very unfriendly. They have lunch specials posted online, but when I asked about them at the restaurant, I was told "no, everything costs the same, we have no specials." So, we got up and left. read more

This restaurant is an unexpected wonderful little gem. The food was fresh, hot and authentic. A wide variety of choices. We were a party of 13 including 3 small children. This was the first time anyone in my family had ever tried Panoy Bistro, and boy am I glad we decided on this place! I have been to a lot of restaurants in Grass Valley, but this place quickly became one of my favorites. Everything was so authentic and so beautiful inside the restaurant. I really liked the decorations and the design. They also have a beautiful garden in the front patio area. They were growing all kinds of vegetables! It was really cool. We really enjoyed the spring rolls with the peanut sauce. I also really liked the pineapple curry with chicken. They have a separate spice level for Laos food that I thought was really cool. I have a pretty low spice tolerance so I didn't get anywhere close to the highest level. Overall, a really amazing spot. I can't wait to return. Highly recommend. read more

This is a sweet little family run Asian bistro on the edge of Grass Valley California off Highway 174, that has incredible Laotian food that I haven't found anywhere else in the country. They have a great grill, fantastic Curries the fresh rolls are outstanding, and for a dollar more you can get an extra two pieces, I always suggest ordering an extra side of peanut sauce for $2. The chicken satay salad is one of my favs for a somewhat light bite. Everything's great, give it a try. An extra perk is the bar attached to the restaurant, that has very full glasses of wine for six dollars for white, eight dollars for red. They also have beers for I think five dollars. The bar is cash only but the restaurant takes most forms of payment and has beer as well. read more

Overall poor experience. Food was served in a cold cast-iron skillet which caused the food to quickly cool down. I ordered the curry medium-hot, but it was closer to mild. Server was definitely not friendly. Table was covered in a sticky film. I don't think it was dirty. It just had a coating that was sticky. Bathroom was clean. Food tasted good, it just got cold and was not as spicy as expected. Menu selection is quite good. They had three TV's playing which absolutely destroyed ambiance. One had two guys discussing football and the volume was up. Unfortunately not a place I would return to. read more

We have two really great Thai/Lao restaurants here in our little town of Grass Valley and Panoy is one of them. Everything is really fresh and the waitress is funny and sassy. The place is clean, despite what one of the reviews posted, although maybe they were having an off day. The staff is very friendly. It's a small place and has a smaller bar just off the dining room. The bartender (I think he's the owner or something) keeps the beer and wine flowing ($4 for beer and $5 for a glass of wine) and there is real camaraderie in that bar. I have never had a bad meal there. The Naga Noodles are amazing as is the pineapple fried rice. I am becoming a regular because they are just around the corner from where I live (as is the other Thai place). i took friends there last night and one friend ordered the Panoy fried rice and asked for it to be a certain level of spicy. He said he didn't think they could do it because most places don't get the spiciness right. He was surprised that it was exactly the right level of spice that he wanted. His girlfriend and I had a couple of stir fry dishes (garlic for her and I tried the sweet n sour stir fry. I was pleasantly surprised and she loved her dish. Highly recommended. read more
