So delicious! This was one of a few places that were actually open on the 4th of July, although with some limited hours (open until 8 pm). The location was a bit odd, as there were barely any other businesses nearby. There is street parking that you can pay for. It's a fairly small restaurant. We were were seated pretty quickly. Service was very friendly. I would say that portions were pretty reasonable. Things we ordered: -Pineapple fried rice: Very fragrant with the char and flavorful. Seasoned very well. We opted for mild spice on this. I would order this again. -Chicken pad thai: Done very well! Some places the pad thai is too sweet, but this one was very balanced and had a good tamarind flavor. Medium spicy was a bit on the spicy side, but perfect for me! Would order this again. -Duck larb: Unique, but I couldn't tell it was duck. My partner enjoyed this more than I did. The portion for the larb was on the smaller side and it came with some lettuce, radish, carrots, cucumbers. -Mee kati ground pork: A very unique dish that not many Thai restaurants seem to have, in which it came with noodles, and a variety of toppings like beans sprouts, lettuce, green beans, peanuts, and cilantro. It came with a fermented curry gravy, and it delicious! I would totally order this again. -Green Thai tea: Quite fragrant and not too full on half and half like some other places have it. It's also not as sweet as another local Thai restaurant. I would actually order this again. -Classic Thai tea: Strong Thai tea flavor, also not too sweet. Super excited to come back here. We ordered two lunch specials at $15. Red curry with tofu and pad thai with chicken both medium spice. The red curry was really good imo but my husband said it could have been thicker and more flavorful. The pad thai was decently spicy for a medium rating. Very good flavor and I would say one of the better pad thais you can get in Sacramento. Not overly saucy like in some places. We also ordered the Tum Luang Pra Bang, green papaya salad with fermented fish sauce. I will say, the execution and the quality of ingredients were superb, I personally couldn't get past the flavor, but my mom, a stronger SEA woman, loved it! The staff was very nice and polite. This is my go-to order when I'm first trying a new Thai restaurant. Hiso did this dish well, good flavor, decent amount of chicken and medium was a med-hot level. I appreciated the bit of broccoli, as that was an almost palate cleanser when the dish got a little spicy for me. The bad: The calamari. Do NOT order this. Small strips that were waaaaay over cooked. As someone who doesn't handle super spicy dishes well, the medium level had a nice little kick but still let all the flavors come through. I'm from the Bay Area where there are tons of good Thai spots, so I wasn't expecting much when I was in Sacramento for the night and craving Thai food. We picked this place kind of randomly and it ended up being way better than expected. Honestly, probably one of the top 3 Thai places I've ever been to. We got the crispy chicken skin to start and it was delicious! Super crispy, really flavorful, and the sweet chili sauce on the side went perfectly with it. I could've easily eaten a couple more orders. We also tried the papaya salad. We asked for mild since my partner can't do spicy, but it was still really hot. I usually go for spicy and even I felt it. If you're sensitive to heat, definitely go with no spice and add chili on your own. The beef pad Thai was great too. A lot of places mess it up with weird noodles or it ends up looking too red and tasting off, but this one was perfect. Good texture and flavor without being too sweet or oily. The space is nice but it gets loud. There was a birthday party going on and they were super loud, so maybe not the best place for a quiet dinner. But the service was great. I've had the pad thai, drunken noodles, and some curries here and I've always enjoyed them. This last time, I tried a Laotian dish - Mee Kati. This was super tasty dish where you had hot broth do this delicious concoction of noodles, veggies, herbs, and meat, and then mix. The fresh rolls were killer. I was pretty meh on the chicken wings. A little too much breading without a lot of flavor. Service: Super friendly and attentive. No concerns here at all. Ambiance - I think this place is super cute. My friend and I went on a Monday around 4pm when they opened. It was pretty empty, as there were only 3 other customers in the restaurant. The parking is off the street and you would have to pay. I was introduced to this place by a family member who goes here almost every week, and it lived up to my expectations! The atmosphere was cozy, with dim lighting and comfortable seats. The green curry (mild spice) had a lot of depth and a good spice to it. There were a lot of veggies inside, like bamboo shoots and eggplant. The consistency is more liquid-y compared to other green curries I've tried but I would still recommend. I also enjoyed the Pad See Ew dish but would get mild spice next time. Love it! Hiso is a fantastic addition to the Sacramento area for authentic Lao and Thai food. It's not located directly downtown but on the outskirts, depending on where you're coming from. After reading several positive Yelp reviews, we decided to give it a try and made the trip just to experience the food for myself. Parking is limited to street parking, so we had to park around the corner and walk to the restaurant. Once we stepped inside, we were greeted with beautifully curated Southeast Asian decor. The space felt very welcoming and aesthetically pleasing, with one standout feature being a map of Laos spotlighted on the wall in the waiting area. I loved that touch, it really added to the charm and authenticity of the Lao & Thai vibes. Although it wasn't very busy during dinner time, we still had to wait a bit to be seated. Our waitress was friendly. For dinner, we ordered the truffle fries as an appetizer, followed by the chicken pad Thai (medium heat), Lao-style steak, and noodle soup kao piek. * Truffle Fries: A great starter, perfectly crisp and flavorful. * Chicken Pad Thai: The flavor was spot on saucy, sweet, sour, and the perfect level of medium heat. I couldn't get enough! So good! * Lao-Style Steak: A good portion size but on the pricier side for $35. The cut of steak was fattier than I expected, which was a bit disappointing. * Noodle Soup Kao Piek: The broth was rich and flavorful, but for my personal taste, the white pepper was a little overpowering and overshadowed the other flavors. While the food was delicious overall, one improvement I'd suggest is for them to check their tables. The table we were seated at was uneven and kept tilting back and forth, which was distracting while trying to enjoy the meal. I also liked the upholstered seating against the wall. Even though they weren't busy, we were standing around and waiting to get seated for a while. It also took them a long time to check on our order. We tried the following dishes: Fresh Roll, Butter Shiitake Mushroom, Tom Yum, Tom Kha, Mango Curry, Pad Thai, and Basil Fried Rice. Surprisingly, I preferred the Tom Yum over the Tom Kha. The Tom Yum was more flavorful, and the coconut flavor wasn't as present as l like it to be in Tom Kha. I really enjoyed the Fresh Rolls. The peanut sauce was one of the best I've had. To drink, I tried the Green Thai Tea. This was not the drink for me. It was so overly sweet; I had a hard time getting it down. For dessert, l had the Mango Sticky Rice. l've never had a bad Mango Sticky Rice from anywhere, and here was not an exception.
