Came here in May 2026 with a small group. Had the pad thai with chicken, the pad see-ew with chicken, and yellow curry. The pad thai was rather medicore without any strong flavors. The small tofu cubes in the dish were hard and flavorless. Ntot a dish-ruining offense, but I must say that I didn't know tofu got that hard. Same thing for the pad see-ew. It was quite dry and had a distinctly burnt flavor the first time it came out, it tasted like ash in my mouth. The chicken was rather burnt. The staff was friendly and kindly replaced it for me, but the burnt flavor remained. I think the pan they're using must have been burnt. I didn't think the yellow curry was notable. I can't believe I haven't left a review for Thai Basil yet! I've been coming here for years, and it's one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Sacramento. I love that they have vegan options and participate in the annual Sacramento Vegan Chef Challenge. My favorites are the pad thai, Thai iced tea, garlic fried rice, and garlic Impossible noodles (which are a little pricey, but very tasty). It took me a long time to visit this spot. I've lived here for like 5 years and this is my first time here. It's most likely because it's an Omni restaurant with a vegan menu, rather than a vegan restaurant. I've been to the Veg Cafe that's upstairs from it, because that place is all vegan, and I've been to Babe's a couple doors down, which is all vegan and gluten-free. The prices here are a little high in my opinion, especially since the portions aren't super big. I went with 2 other people and we ordered the following vegan items. - salad rolls - Pad Mamuang Himapan - impossible garlic noodles I liked it all. I also got a vegan Thai iced tea since they aren't usually vegan. The bathrooms were nice and clean. They had a place to set your purse while you pee. There's indoor seating and patio seating so I sat on the patio because October in Sac is basically the perfect month for outdoor dining. The service was good. But the day on Monday, April 27, 2026 I was so disappointed with the service and the food. The egg rolls were so dry like they were overcooked and they're missing a lot of vegetables inside. First tried this place on a walking tour of the city where our host informed us that the chef owner is Thai and her food is very authentic and she has been a port of the food scene in Sacramento for a while. The food was very good, highlights were the garlic fried rice and surprisingly the asparagus that came with the meat dish, I don't know how they got that flavor and grill taste, absolutely Devine! The servers were very nice but it took quite a while for us to get our order taken and the we were about halfway down with our dinner before we got our drinks. So I deducted 1 star for this two issues, I wouldn't say it was super busy as there were a few open tables but there were only two gals running waitressing so it wasn't too bad. The restaurant smelled so wonderful when you walk in and there are plants everywhere!! Someone there is a green thumb and they had the cutest propagated orchid in the bathroom. Great spot for Thai food in Downtown Sac! Visited with my family & loved the vegetarian options! Entirely vegan menu available which offers great variety. Ordered panang curry, pad Thai, Thai spicy fried rice, and holy tofu. Would not recommend holy tofu as it is very dry, but rest of the dishes were flavorful and perfectly spiced. I ordered a papaya salad to go for about $15 and asked for medium spice. It had zero spice and the portion was ridiculously small. The papaya itself tasted old and watery, with a sour, off smell that made it inedible. When I called to ask for a refund or a remake and offered to bring the food and receipt back, the owner was extremely rude. She was short, kept cutting me off, and refused to help in any way. She showed no concern for the quality of the food or the experience. The food was gross and not safe to eat, and the customer service was unacceptable. A Needed Review Update - Service Has Been Better SITREP I love this restaurant location since it's in my hood, but I've been disappointed over this last decade with hit & miss service and some disappointing preparations over previous favorite dishes. THE SETUP I have to give props to seeing a more consistent improvement in what has been my prior experience and a continued cost-efficient pricing of dishes on better price points when compared to other nearby Thai establishments. MENU FAVES The Yellow Curry Chicken - with steamed rice - seems to have gotten more flavorful and hearty. I like this. The Tom Kha (Spicy Coconut Milk Soup) remains my standard favorite to-go item I get from this spot and is always a great *home remedy* for clearing out the head when congested. Thai Basil is on the corner of 24th and J St. Hubby and I dropped in for dinner on a weekend. It wasn't busy and we were seated immediately with menus. Seemed to take a while before anyone came to take our orders. But, the food came out fairly quickly. We tried the following: Fried Spring Rolls (veggies, tofu, bean thread noodles with sweet and sour sauce), Pad See Ew (rice noodles, egg, broccoli in a sweet soy sauce), Pad Kra Pow (bell peppers, mushrooms, Thai basil in a spicy garlic chili soy sauce), steamed rice, and Thai iced tea. The Fried Egg Rolls were bland. The Pad See Ew was overly salty. The Pad Kra Pow had decent flavor but there wasn't much basil flavor (seemed like there were only 2-3 sprigs) and the tofu was too firm and tasteless. Even the Thai Iced Tea wasn't flavorful. Well, I really like the food at this place I I did have a problem. This is more about disability than it is about the ambience or the food itself, I would say it's really about the customer service there. This is the first week out of a hospital for my partner of 23 years and we took a trip to Sacramento to see family. I took him to lunch. He has traumatic brain injury, so his disability is not visible, nor apparent unless you get into a deep conversation with him. He's unable to process what he reads unfortunately, I did not carefully look at what he was ordering, and the item he ordered was very spicy, due to the traumatic brain injury. This is not something he can eat as the injury... If you've had traumatic brain injury or you've known someone traumatic brain injury, exacerbate certain senses and mutes other ones. So he did not eat the food. When we were asked if we wanted a box, we declined and explained that he did not know it was spicy and could not eat it. They did not offer anything other than "sorry,". I went inside to go to the bathroom and pay the bill and as I was in the bathroom, I can hear the two serving people gossiping about us about "how obvious it was spicy because it's on the menu." I left the bathroom and confronted the worker in a very friendly manner to explain that has traumatic brain injury, and it doesn't process everything that he reads. Nor handle spicy food. Explained that he had been in the hospital for near seven months, and this was his first outing. Not only did she not apologize, she didn't even offer to make amends in anyway by lowering the bill which was almost $70. It's not a lot of money, but overall it was very weird. I left with a very sad sunken feeling from that place. The flippancy around his disability and the lack of just care about it all was mind blowing. At the very least they could've took the item off , at minimum they could've apologized. read more

We had a great time sitting out on the patio here. It was not to busy of a sidewalk but a little bit of people watching to be had... and parking where you could watch your car. The server actually asked if either of us was vegan and gave us the vegan menu!!! Awesome! My green curry was flavorful and filling. My husband got something with a bunch of seafood and he also enjoyed his. The server was attentive and friendly. I'd actually look for her again to take care of us. I wish I got her name. They have beer and wine which is good enough for us. Not sure if they have liquor or not but plenty of places nearby do for an after dinner drink. I found this place because it was close to an event I attended. When I walked in at 4:30 in the afternoon, there were two tables occupied. One had already ordered, the other table had 2 people who had just been handed menus. I waited at the counter and the one server ignored me, so I asked if I could just sit at one of the small tables. He told me to wait and he would get to me. He walked past me to bring water to table one, then went back to the kitchen to get something, then he brought water to table two. Since he was ignoring me, I explained that I wanted to dine in, and again asked if I could take a seat. He began lecturing me on why they have a sign that says "please wait to be seated" which I had overlooked. Seems if he didn't do things in a particular order, it was too much for him to keep track of. With only TWO tables seated? ReallY?! As he motioned me to the table I had asked about, his lecture continued about WHY it was so important for me NOT to be seated before HE was ready. I finally apologized for confusing him, but he persisted with his lecture. When he finally decided to take my order, I asked about the spice level and his only input was that the items with peppers pictured were hot. How hot is hot? He didn't know. I should have LEFT right then! But I only had an hour till my event, so I ordered. I tried the fried "golden pouches" and they had ZERO flavor - no spice at all, not even salt. Then I had tom kha with chicken - one of my all time fave dishes - and it was completely mediocre. Again - WHERE is the flavor? To celebrate my supervisor's promotion, my colleague's and I decided to celebrate her over some delicious food. When we asked if she had any preferences, she suggested Thai Basil. Ironically, Thai Basil is a restaurant that I have had bookmarked on Yelp for years; however, since I'm rarely in the midtown area, I did not have the chance to check it out. Aside from celebrating our supervisor's promotion, this would be the first time some of us met in-person...so this was a highly anticipated occasion for me. When I walked into the establishment, I immediately headed to the table where my colleagues were seated. Since it was past the traditional lunchtime, they were not busy. However, I can imagine that it's packed during lunchtime and on the weekends. Shortly after my arrival, an employee made her way around the table and took our orders. I ordered the Pad-Kee-Mow (Drunken Noodles) with chicken. Roughly 15 minutes later our orders arrived. As advertised, the Pad-Kee-Mow was spicy and very flavorful. It took me back to March 2020, when my wife and I were in Thailand enjoying the food & culture, while the world was in the process of being forever changed. The spring rolls that my supervisor ordered for us to share were delicious and paired well with the various sauces that the restaurant offered. From the looks on everyone's faces, I think we all enjoyed our meals. My only beef (and I use this word loosely) is that I felt like the customer service lacked warmth. Yes we received our food in a timely manner and yes the staff did a great job of keeping our waters full. However, the staff didn't seem welcoming/inviting. Thai basil is at the corner of J and 25st. If you park on 25th street you can park for free on 2 hours. They open at 11:30am. Our party of 7 arrived at 11:30am and were immediately seated. Menus and Water was immediately brought to our table. For the table we ordered the Chicken satay and cucumber salad. Both were really good. I love the peanut sauce for the chicken satay. The cucumber salad was very fresh and crisp. I had the green curry without any meat. It was delicious. Compared to last time the servicing size is much larger. I had enough left over for dinner. The green curry included- egg plant, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, red and green bell peppers, and other veggies. It was really filling. I wish the bowl of rice was larger. read more

It didn't take away from the dish, but there was no need for it. However, the beef was perfectly cooked and tender. The noodles well prepared, as well. The lobster dumplings are a hard pass. A wee bit fishy, the meat tough; it didn't work. The avocado curry was the highlight of the meal. Interesting spot, for sure. Thai Basil has been on my list for a while. Every time we would pass this J street restaurant I'd want to stop in to try it and I've had multiple people suggest it as well. The inside is small, but cute with four tops and two tops as well as some outdoor seating. Our server was nice and mad good about checking on us. It took a while to decide on our order, but we ended up trying some of their seasonal special as well as their beef drunken noodles. I tried an avocado curry for the first time, it was green curry based and had a half an avocado, peppers, sweet potatoes and we added tofu. The flavor was creamy, especially with the avocado. The flavor on the drunken noodles was great. This was the first time I had drunken noodles served over fresh lettuce and I almost wonder if it would make a great salad with extra lettuce and sauce added. We ordered beef with this dish and it was tender and flavorful, but I wish there was more of it. My Thai tea was delicious too.
