History
Established in 1996.
In the mid 1990′s, Seth Dickerman moved to San Francisco and opened Dickerman Prints, an all-optical custom photo lab. At that time, Dickerman Prints made fiber-based black and white prints to 40′′x50", and type C-prints to 30′′x45". Seth's enduring love of working with light and photosensitive papers kept him printing in the traditional darkroom until he began experimenting with digital C-printing.
The results were so amazing - often better than his darkroom prints - that he migrated Dickerman Prints to a digital photo printing lab. We also offer photo scanning, photo framing, archival pigment print service, chromogenic print services, giclee printing, photo restoration, and more.
While our methods and printers may have changed, the goal remains the same. To work with the photographer's images, to produce prints that best articulate what the photographer wants to say, employing the craft, skill, and perseverance to make the imagined manifest in the finished print.
Meet the Business Owner: Seth Dickerman D.
I am a photographer and printer. I set up my first darkroom in 1968 when I was twelve. I've been printing photographs ever since.
I received my BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1978. Afterward, I worked as a B&W printer in a custom photo lab where I first saw people make really great color prints. I learned color printing and started shooting color too.
In the mid-1990s, I moved to San Francisco and started Dickerman Prints as an all-optical custom lab. I made Fiber-based B&W prints to 40x50", and type C-prints to 30x45". I began experimenting with digital printing at Robyn Color Lab. When they closed at the end of 2007, I purchased their photo printing equipment and moved the business to a perfect space in San Francisco's fabulous Mission District.
I still love to shoot and to print. I still like to see what I can make out of an image, to make prints that work on as many levels as possible, to make prints that fully articulate whatever the photographer wants them to.
