I've ordered three cakes from Sugar Butter Flour now, each for my daughter's birthday celebrations…read more My little one has a very creative mind and very specific tastes, and I am so happy with the work from this cake artist! Each cake has been absolutely wonderful, and the flavors are always on point. The bakery is located in an unassuming strip mall, but don't let the simplicity of the storefront fool you. These are top-notch, custom cakes that both the kids and adults at her parties always enjoy. The team is highly responsive, friendly, and great to work with. I feel the pricing is very fair for the quality of custom-made cakes you receive. This has officially become my go-to bakery for custom cakes. Highly recommend!

The custom cakes here look amazing!…read more I stopped by the store to see if we could taste the cake before committing to it. I learned the wedding cake flavors aren't the same flavors they have at the store in cake and cupcake form. Luckily when speaking with the young man, he said "we do have wedding cake kits right now". We happily purchased one right away, but wondered how fresh they could be if they had it on demand. Yup, most of the cakes were super dry and hard. The chocolate cakes also didn't have that deep chocolate flavor. Admittedly, we do not like buttercream and wedding cakes usually are limited to that as well as fondant. Every option here is buttercream based so we weren't huge fans, but leaned toward more the tropical flavors: mango, passionfruit, lemon. The mocha, hazelnut and caramel were pretty tasty too. Props for the princess cake!

I must admit that I still have a knee-jerk reaction of rolling my eyes whenever someone tells me…read morethat they are gluten-free (NOT counting those that have Celiac/gluten allergies). However, I will say that one good thing that has come from this movement is the plethora of innovative gluten free bakeries and eateries that serve up tasty products. I first learned about Sweet Diplomacy when my neighbors gave me some cupcakes from here that tasted amazing. When I looked them up, I was surprised to learn that they were in Los Altos as I live nearby and had never heard of them. The shop is very cute and homely and feels as if you are in someone's home kitchen. Although they seem to specialize in cupcakes, they also serve a number of other gluten-free and even vegan items. I should note that this bakery focuses on more desserts (ie cookies, cakes, tarts, etc.) rather than pastries (ie croissants and buns). I never thought that my new favorite go-to bakery would be a gluten-free one. As a Mountain View resident, I must say that it is also nice not to have to trek to Palo Alto in order to get some tasty cupcakes!

You can tell the frosting is fresh and light and the vanilla cake was moist and yum. Worth trying out for a sweet treat.

Pro tip, go early because they run out quickly. I heard the worker say they ran out of most things by 11am. I got the blueberry cheesecake and the yuzu basque cheesecake. Blueberry was light and not too sweet. Basque was thick and creamy. Definitely not a place for people who are lactose intolerant. Had to dock a star because it seems like they're still a bit disoriented. When we walked in, the worker wasn't sure what pastries were left. Another patron walked in and ordered a drink, the worker wasn't sure if they were still making the drink for the day. We waited over 15 minutes for our two slices, apparently it was just sitting on the counter and they forgot.

HUGE thank you to the very lovely people at La Patisserie who made a custom cake for my brother's…read morebirthday. They matched the reference photo I gave them almost exactly - and actually made it look better than the photo! They were so kind and patient in our back-and-forth about the cake details and it was packaged so carefully on the day of the pick-up. Every step of the process went so smoothly and I cannot recommend them enough. Plus, everything I have ever had from them has been delicious. This place is such a gem within the Bay Area. I am beyond grateful to the wonderful and talented staff at La Patisserie.

I've been coming to La Patisserie in Cupertino for years, usually when I'm already in the area…read moreshopping. There are a lot more fancy dessert shops around the Bay Area these days, but somehow I still come back for their Guava Cake. It's actually a strange craving. I don't think about this cake every week. Sometimes I completely forget about it for months, then one day something goes wrong in my brain and suddenly I NEED a guava cake. I've had this cake many times over the years and that's probably what impresses me most - it really hasn't changed much. Same fluffy cake, same very fragrant guava flavor, same bright old-school appearance. Maybe the angle of the whipped cream piping has changed a few degrees over the years, but I'll allow that process deviation. The guava flavor is the main reason I keep buying it. To me, it tastes surprisingly natural and close to real fruit. I've had plenty of guava desserts where you immediately get that artificial syrup/flavoring impression. I don't get that here. The guava is strong and fragrant, the cake itself is very light and fluffy, and the mousse and glossy guava topping give you that fruit flavor in almost every bite. This is definitely an old-school cake. It's not trying to be Lady M or some modern Instagram dessert. And that's fine. A good traditional cake is still a good cake. Usually I'm buying the whole cake to bring to someone's house, so I've watched a lot of first-timers try it over the years. Guava is guava - some people think it's on the sweet side, others love how fragrant it is. But somehow this is the one guava cake I've brought around that pretty much everybody ends up liking. And one comment I hear a lot is how natural the guava flavor tastes. It's around $70 for a whole cake now, which definitely isn't cheap. But if I'm paying that much for cake, at least give me something I can actually remember the next day. This one I can. If I'm planning to pick one up around 4 or 5 PM, I normally order earlier in the day. I've learned not to conduct unnecessary cake-inventory experiments. After all these years, La Patisserie's Guava Cake is still basically the same cake I remember. Dr. C long-term stability study: PASSED. Whipped cream piping angle may have experienced minor process drift. No CAPA required.
