My family and I come to Buxton every Memorial Day, and eating at Diamond Shoals is always a tradition for us. It's within walking distance of the motel we stay in, so we'll sometimes go there for multiple meals. It's a little divey but in a charming way. The seafood always tastes fresh and the servers are very friendly and attentive. My family is also a big fan of their salad bar. The hushpuppies are delicious and they give you a huge basket full of them to share! I've mainly only had seafood and breakfast here, so I definitely want to try the sushi at some point. read more

Breakfast was pretty good. I had the seafood omelette, with little bay shrimp & some crabmeat with a side of cinnamon apple. The large grapefruit juice was larger than other places too often do. But the best part was the coffee, which was the best I've had on this road-trip, and the friendly service. The restaurant looks like it would be good for dinner, since they do sushi too. This was a casual seafood spot serving all meals along with a salad bar as well as a sushi menu. They also had an attached seafood market and a little souvenir store in the front of the establishment. The menu had a number of options along with daily fresh catches. They alerted us of their short staff, but it was not an issue at all besides our waitress forgetting the clams appetizer. Besides that, it was reasonable. They start the meal off with their hush puppies. They were crispy and very delicious. It was even better with their house made tarter and cocktail sauces. For an appetizer, the special roll was ordered ($14.95). It consisted of lump crab, green onion, and cucumber topped with smoked salmon, spicy sauce, and pickled jalapeno. This was well put together. I really enjoyed the smoked salmon aspect here along with the pickled jalapeno. The sauce seemed to have a Sriracha base, which just made the roll that much better. I had the stuffed grouper ($26.99) for an entrée. I chose the vegetable and sweet potato for my 2 sides. Both were solid, no complaints. Regarding the grouper, it was stuffed with crab meat. It was okay at best. It was a little too plain and small. The amount of crab meat was respectable I thought. I also tried the surfer boy roll (salmon, avocado, tempura crunch, green onion, spicy sauce) and the coco mango roll (Hamachi, cucumber, mango salsa). Both of those were decent. COVID review. Highly disappointed that I didn't think to check reviews before stopping. Please take note: DS has not done anything to improve customers concerns on masks or general housekeeping that would make customers feel more comfortable. Would also like to say that tables are not spread out what so ever. I actually had to ask the server to move us to another table where I would feel more comfortable. Condiments were on the tables (soy sauce, ketchup) , not individually served. Based on promises for improvement posted over a month ago, it doesn't look like any changes will be happening. read more

This place is just amazing! It manages to be both modern and a throwback all at once, in the best possible ways. You can't beat the prices and I never tasted a better biscuit! We ate here for both breakfast and dinner. I will start with breakfast. I had the Somero omelette It was made just the way that I like it. There was no brown on the eggs at all and they were nice and fluffy. The stuffing was plentiful including the chicken. They gave me 2 sausage Patties which were also very good. I am picky about my coffee but for a restaurant this coffee was very good. My only complaint is that they did not have real half and half, but instead had Coffee Mate. Coffee Mate is a bit sweet for me and has too many carbs. The service was fantastic. These servers really move. Dinner was good as well. I had the Tile fish which was flaky and white. I really do not like "fishy" fish and this fit the bill. I had a double order of mixed vegetables which were obviously fresh and sautéed They were very good. I also had the salad bar. Everything was fresh and it was nice eating at an old fashioned well stocked salad bar again. Very nice touch to this restaurant. The bottom line is that this establishment is very good and we would eat here again for breakfast or dinner. This one gets 4 Siberian Husky paws up. read more

Even though there was a line thy got us seated right away. The waitress brought hush puppies to the table right away. They were good. We ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi. It was a good sized portion and cooked perfect and delicious. The mango sauce was a really good addition. We also had chicken tenders which were also very very tasty, light and very fresh tasting. The third dish we had was the fried red snapper. The batter was light and fluffy and the snapper was delicious. The waitress was on it and we never wanted for anything. Great clam chowder. Other than that it was sub par. Food was highly priced for the quality and quantity. Food came out warm, bland and over cooked. Seafood was not fresh as advertised. Had the shrimp linguine and it was over cooked and the sauce was off color and had no flavor. Came with "garlic bread" which was toast with butter and garlic not actual garlic bread. We were headed back to KDH from Frisco and stopped for a bite to eat. We had a grouper lunch basket. Pulled pork sliders, and hush puppies. The grouper was not heavily breaded and had good flavor. The hush puppies were good as well. These had kernels of corn in them. The coleslaw is cream based and delish. The tart sauce appeared to be house made and is one of the best that I've had in the OBX. The 3 pork sliders app was enough to eat as a meal. They were loaded with pork topples with slaw and a pickle. Definitely did NC right! There are not many restaurant options when in the Buxton area so when passing by the Diamond Shoals pull in for a bite! The service as well was as good as the food. Even with some understaffing, Diamond Shoals did a great job serving my party during our visit! The restaurant was very busy but our server was very attentive even though she had many other parties to handle. Each table was given complimentary hush puppies which were delicious. The highlights of our dinner were the fries which were perfectly crispy and hot. My group also had the shrimp scampi (which was decent), the grouper (very delicious!), and the Captain's Platter (the grouper and the crab cakes were the stars of the platter!). We also tried their award-winning clam chowder which was good but I wouldn't describe it as hearty or very filling. We decided to come back after avoiding this place due to our last experience eight years ago. I'm glad we did. We both got seared tuna steaks, and they were very good. so were the sides, as well as the clam chowder and hush puppies. I thought the clam chowder was a little unorthodox, as it was creamy and not clear broth like we are used to for Hatteras clam chowder. Still, it was good. My husband and I were in the area for our Anniversary and ate at Diamond Shoals the first morning of our stay. All I can say is, this place is so wonderful, that we chose to eat here every morning of our stay instead of going elsewhere, and that is so unlike me. Generally, I like to go to different places, try them out, give them a chance and add to my Yelp reviews. But Diamond Shoals reeled me in so hard, that I couldn't bring myself to choose a different breakfast eatery. I like to think of myself as a tough reviewer. And Diamond Shoals is so good, that I have nothing but good things to say about it. Like I said, we ate there the first morning and every morning after. We were staying at the Cape Hatteras Motel and this place is just down the road from the motel, which made it very accessible for 2 people on their Anniversary who were starving (or so we thought). The place sits on the side of the road and can be a little difficult getting in and out of if there is traffic, but otherwise it's all good. Walking in, we were immediately immersed in their small gift shop that has all kinds of cute trinkets to look at. The host greeted us and sat us near the window the first morning. We ordered 2 coffee's and 2 waters with lemon. Our waitress every morning was Donna, and she was simply wonderful! A great waitress who was friendly, but not overly fake. She was quick to keep our drinks full and helpful, but didn't hover. Can I just take a moment to talk about their coffee. What the heck do they put in their coffee?! This coffee was the best coffee that I have ever had. Don't get me wrong, breakfast was good. And I will get to that in a moment, but the coffee...Wow! Simply the best I've ever had! Fortunately for us, they sell it in the gift shop and we were sure to make sure we bought some on our last morning there. It doesn't taste as good as it did in the restaurant, so I'm a bit taken aback as I sit here sipping on it right now. I tried to perfect it to the way Diamond Shoals did it, but I guess my Northern Virginian tap water has nothing on the salty goodness of the Outer Banks. I really want to know Diamond Shoals, what you do differently? I can't move there right now and I really crave your coffee every day now. Please reach out to me and give me the secret. It was amazing! For breakfast, my husband and I split 2 breakfast entrees. He ordered the French Toast for a modest price of $5.79. It comes with 3 thick slices of Texas style toast made just right. I ordered the Fisherman's Favorite for $6.99, that comes with 2 eggs (I ordered scrambled), bacon or a sausage link (I ordered bacon crispy), grits or hash brown with onion (I ordered the hash browns) and 1 slice of toast (I ordered a biscuit instead). I also ordered a cup of sausage gravy to pour over my eggs, hash browns and biscuit. Seriously, the breakfast was perfect. Everything was fresh, made just right and soo soo good! We really enjoyed it! Especially with that awesome coffee. The next day, I ordered the Diamond Shoals Special for $8.99. It comes with 2 eggs (this time I ordered 'medium' fried), your choice of country ham or sugar cured ham (I ordered the salty country ham), grits or hash browns (hash browns again please) and toast or biscuit (wheat toast for me). My hubby and I split and he also ordered a hotcake with blueberries on the side. It wasn't the jumbo size, but it was still huge! I can't imagine what the jumbo looks like. Just the same, breakfast was fantastic! I can't rave enough how impressed we were with Diamond Shoals. I can't speak about their lunch or dinners, but they are on point with breakfast. The place is so cozy and inviting and their food is just wonderful. My husband and I had such a wonderful time on our Anniversary trip to Buxton, that we intend on coming back next year. We will be eating our breakfast every morning at Diamond Shoals without a doubt. I'm sure that there are other fine places to have breakfast in Buxton, but in our opinion, Diamond Shoals just can't be beat! read more

By far the best dinner that I have had on Hatteras Island. I had the Captain's platter. I initially balked a little at its $32 price, but let me tell you, it was worth every penny. My crabcake was CRAB not filling. The shrimp, scallops and large filet of grouper were broiled to perfection. I usually consider fried clams a waste of calories but these were definitely worth it! I opted out of the oysters but my dinner companion said they were excellent. My meal came with a choice of two fresh sides and the requisite basket of hush puppies. I brought home half of my meal to enjoy tomorrow. Our server, Abe, was attentive but not overly so. I will be back-both on this trip and on future visits to the island. Diamond Shoals also serves breakfast. My dinner companions have visited many times and rave over their meals and service. I'm now looking forward to breakfast too! read more

We called ahead with a group of 5. The hostess told us we could be seated in 30 minutes, we made our way down to the restaurant and got there 30 minutes after our call. We got there and checked in and proceeded to wait 30 minutes while walk in tables were seating before us. I saw a 5 top, a 6 top, and a 13 top being sat before us. We asked the host and she couldn't give us a straight answer as to why we couldn't be seated. As we were talking to her, another 10+ top walked through to get seated and both hostesses completely disregarded our questions. I have never been to a restaurant with a more confused and discombobulated host team in my life.
