So, we were taking a walk through midtown Manhattan on our vacation, when Mrs. B decided that she wanted to see the diamond district. I, being very wizened over years of business travel to the Big Apple, naively escorted her to the district. I thought that she would be SO impressed that I knew where it is. Big boo-boo: she was eager to spend our children's inheritance, as well as the last few pennies of our savings. And here is our story... With me in tow, she decided to visit a few stores and do some harmless trolling for diamond studded earrings. OK, that's not so bad: she's just like a sport angler, she will simply fish and release the caught prey back in the water after she lands them. No harm, right? Well, she did exactly that for the first three or four shops. She looked around, asked the salespeople to show her a few samples, and then left. A-OK! I, the inveterate cheapskate, kept my distance, hoping and praying that this was all she intended to do. I even promised her a gourmet meal at Burger King or McDonalds if we could leave the area before they separate her from her money. Then, we enter Diamond Scene as part of our "sport," when she falls in love with some nice looking stud diamond earrings in the store. The salespeople were very helpful in showing and explaining the stones to her and, within the space of ten minutes, she decides she wants to buy them. Now, I am a very careful shopper, but I admit that I was not prepared for this eventuality. So, I decide to help her haggle with the staff b/c I do know that the "list" price of most diamonds is about twice of the real price. So, I prattle some technobabble about the three C's, the GIA, etc. to demonstrate my knowledge of gems. Their staff was very kind and answered all my questions to my satisfaction. Before I was able to further establish my precious gems credibility talking about the CIA, AIG, and IGA, we were able to knock off quite a bit from the asking price, and we were able to ask them to ship the gems to our out-of-state home to avoid the NY sales tax. In fact, I have nothing but admiration for the people at Diamond Scene. The quality and price of their goods seem to be top-notch. So now, Mrs. B jaunts around our cozy Midwestern town sporting her new diamond earrings (which nobody can differentiate from cubic zirconium ones), and feels very proud that she is now the proud owner of something that is bright and shiny. My kids have decided that after she dies, they will cut off the earrings from her earlobes and cash the proceeds in for necessities, like their own jewels. read more

The store stood out from the rest because instead of the "We Buy Gold" signs, you would find beautifully made jewelry in the window display, as a high-end jeweler should be. So immediately, I knew this is the right place for us. We were greeted by the store owner, a respectable elder gentleman who takes great pride in his business, and from that point on, the entire experience was nothing but pleasant. They have pretty much all the classic and trendy styles to choose from, but I knew exactly what I wanted, an emerald cut gold engagement ring. Cut the long story short, we narrowed down to 2 stunning diamonds, one larger and much more expensive than the other. But the owner was passionately trying to convince me that the smaller one was the better choice, because I would get more for the money, and simply, it is a better stone. Now, how rare is that?! We bought the stunning smaller stone with a beautiful setting, and the price was very fair, very. 2 weeks later when I went back to pick it up, I was simply speechless by how beautiful the ring is. Since then, whom ever sees it would have that gasp sound followed by "this is stunning" phrase. I would be so proud to show it off here, but selfishly, I want to keep it rare and one of a kind. Once I had my mind set that I wanted to propose to my gf, the next step was buying the ring. I had precisely zero experience buying nice jewelry, but did my research online about diamonds and decided I'd give NYC's Diamond District a go. I entered the process with much trepidation. I'd walked through the DD before and it is a buzz of activity, shiny lights, pretty girls trying to entice you into their stores. It's fun to just visit, but I was worried I was out of my depth doing this shopping for real. What a great find this place was for me then! I had no prior recommendations for any places, so started off just mumbling a few words to a few people at their counters before shuffling off. Then I reached Diamond Scene and the owner, Moein, asked if I was looking for anything. When I explained I was tentatively looking for an engagement ring, he invited me to sit down with him (other places didn't have this amount of space, off to one side and out of the way) and started taking me through his fantastic inventory of diamonds. In all he must have spent a good 2-3 hours with me all in (I went back a couple of times before finally making the purchase), was incredibly patient, informative and generally put me at my ease enough to be comfortable making my decision. He was very sensitive to my budget (I had to convince him to show me something above the original budget I stated was my limit!) and insisted I look at each diamond up close and showed me what to look for in each. This is a truly family business. His wife is the person who designs and sets the rings (mine was absolutely beautiful - halo setting for a cushion cut diamond), and his son and daughter work there too. All of them were a pleasure to deal with, and 100% professional the entire time. I loved their story - Moein's father and grandfather were both in the diamond business and now they are handing it down to their next generation too. This review is well deserved. Part One. I was engagement ring shopping for my girlfriend. It goes without explanation how important of a purchase this is. To add to the pressure, my fiance has a particular love for jewelry that runs deep in her family - it is something very special to her. So I knew that this purchase was an extremely important one that I couldn't get wrong. When I landed on Diamond Scene, I was immediately impressed by the fact that they treated me seriously from the very start. I also liked that they were very open with me when talking about pricing of various items - unlike many other jewelers who ask you to share your budget first before even working with you, which I am not comfortable doing. Ultimately, it was their expertise in jewelry and passion for helping me build a beautiful ring which eventually led me to choose Diamond Scene as the place to buy the ring from. The process was very smooth from beginning to end. On my first visit, we basically built the ring design together. On the next visit, I came to inspect the center stone, and I brought my girlfriend with me so we could try on the band of the ring together and make sure of her ring size. From here, Diamond Scene went ahead with making the ring. On the last visit, I picked up the ring itself - it was certainly the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Part Two. I proposed to my girlfriend with the ring, she said yes, and she was absolutely thrilled with how the ring looked. I was so relieved and happy at how much she loved it. However, there was one little problem - the ring size. Turns out, the ring size we had chosen together wasn't working for her and she needed an adjustment down about a half size. Okay, so we went in to Diamond Scene together to ask them to reduce the ring size. They said no problem, and that it would come back to her in the same condition as before only a half size smaller - we wouldn't even notice any differences. When they said it was ready to pick up, I came in to the store and saw that the ring had successfully been reduced a half size smaller, but there were definitely some noticeable differences - oh no! The band of the ring had lost some of its original key features that my fiance had wanted. My fiance was feeling so crushed when she found this out, and she wished we had never resized the ring in the first place. She was scared that the beauty of the ring would never be restored after this. I was feeling nervous about what to do with it. I decided to trust in Diamond Scene one more time and I give them another chance to fix the ring. (I felt this was a make-or-break situation for them. As I said before, my fiance has a special love for jewelry, and she was feeling crushed after two versions of the ring not satisfying her. Diamond Scene had two strikes, three strikes and you're out as they say. But what did they do on the third pitch? THEY HIT A HOME RUN!) They apologized for what happened with the ring, which was a good sign to me, and I saw they were determined to get it right the third time. I left them the ring with a list of features the ring had to be fixed according to, which they agreed to, and they went to work on it. Eventually, they ended up making a key decision to re-band the ring with new metal at no charge to me at all. They really showed me they cared when they did that. They put all of their effort into getting the ring perfect this time around. When I came to pick it up, my goodness - the ring was even more beautiful than the original. It was indeed perfect! When I presented it to my fiance, she was ecstatic over it. Literally jumping up and down happy. Now she wears it every single day with the happiest smile ever. I guess what they say is true, the third time is the charm. Thank you Diamond Scene. Part Three. After the emotional thrill with the engagement ring, my fiance and I decided to get our wedding bands from Diamond Scene as well. We got matching bands with an engraving of our wedding date, and ones that matched my fiance's engagement ring beautifully when she would wear them together. The process was once again very smooth. I recently went and picked up the rings, and they are just stunningly beautiful. Perfection. Well done Diamond Scene! So this was my ring shopping experience with Diamond Scene. Resized it 3xs with zero fuss and 2 years ago we went back to upgrade the stone and setting from them.. We've also been back to purchase a few other items along the way...
