I purchased the 5 Triangle ring, and in less than a year, the center stone came out. I had to pay to have it shipped, from CA to NY, and cost me about $55 for the repair/shipping. Took over a month to get my ring back, and now, the center stone is noticeably smaller than the other 4 stones. This ring was expensive and I was told it is not meant for every day wear, and needs to be taken off when you clean etc. Had I known this, I never would have spent almost $3,000 on a ring that would break so quickly. I came here with a friend as she was starting the process for engagement ring shopping. You don't need an appointment to look at their jewelry which made it low stress for us. They also have other home goods in-store that make browsing around fun. We worked with Molly and she was extremely helpful and transparent. Molly was very informative and patient with all of our questions, and explained how Mociun could work with my friend to source a stone if she wanted something different than what they had in stock. This review is for the custom, "one of a kind" service at Mociun. We had our appointment with the designer just before everything closed for the pandemic, and so the timeline was a little longer than expected, but everything was handled well for that time. The ring design was based on my inspiration photos, and we tried a few different layouts during the meeting. We settled on one and the ring turned out beautifully. My issue with the store is that a year later, they reused the exact same design and produced it to sell in the store. To me, this violates the spirit of the custom agreement, the whole "one of a kind" selling point, which is more expensive than buying off the rack in the store. Granted, they only produced one more, so my problem isn't that someone else is going around with the same ring. My problem is that it feels really shitty to have come up with what we thought was a one of a kind design, only to have it ripped off and sold a year later. I emailed customer service to ask about it and pointed out that it's the same design, and the response was very unsatisfying to say the least. The person who responded basically told me that I'm wrong, and that "inspiration comes from everywhere" and that even though this ring is inspired by something similar, it's not the same. Yes, it has an additional diamond or two and it's cheaper - it's not 100% the same. But any fool looking at the photos of the two can see that they're not just inspired by the same thing; they're not cousins, they're twins. The customer service person even referenced a previously sold ring claiming they were both inspired by that one; however I have never seen that one before so I wasn't inspired by that when I requested this design, and it also is clearly very different than my ring and the one they made based on mine. I wrote back saying as much, and got the same type of gaslighting response, basically that I don't know what I'm talking about and there is no problem. Given that we could have purchased a car with the amount we spent there on this ring (and both of our wedding rings), I would expect customer service to at least take my complaint seriously and treat me with respect instead of telling me that I'm just mistaken and there's no issue. It sucks that this experience has completely changed how we look at my rings now; previously we had been excited to go to a local designer, support a local business (especially during a tough pandemic), and felt a personal connection to the store and brand. Now we realize we are not valued as customers (once you've paid the bill) and I really regret going there for something so important. I'm waiting a few years and then will go to Wwake to redesign my ring (where I should have gone in the first place). Don't go here unless you're buying something off the rack and don't care about artistic integrity (not to be dramatic, just being clear that you're not gonna be ripped off, you're just not going to be treated like you matter). read more

Early this year, my now fiancé and my best friend started the custom design process with Mociun. They were struggling to find a stone they liked for me after several months. (I think my fiancé perhaps didn't have a ton of clarity about what I might want, and Mociun was unable to deliver stones within his budget that were akin to what he was asking for, so there was a lot of delay and a lot of back and forth.) He ended up proposing to me with a stand-in ring purchased from Mociun with the understanding that he could return it for a credit, and since I didn't love the ring and it was expensive, we opted to go that route. After several months of this, I decided I would like to be involved in my own ring design, as I am myself a designer and have a specific aesthetic. I gave my fiancé and friend very clear notes on what kind of stone I wanted, which were sent over to Mociun, and we made arrangements to come to NYC from DC for a weekend and meet with Caitlin Mociun herself. She was not available for a weekend meeting, so my fiancé and I both took days off work and paid several thousands of dollars to make the trip up, once hotel and train and meals were factored in. When we arrived for our appointment, we were covered in sweat from the walk in 85-degree weather, and our two dogs (both in carriers) that we had to bring on our trip with us were also extremely hot. No one offered us any water or anything else to drink, despite the fact that we were about to spend $40k+ on a custom diamond ring, and no one was wearing a mask--so in my opinion the pandemic can no longer be an excuse. The only masked person in the store was Caitlin herself, but she pulled her mask down repeatedly throughout our appointment to drink the can of Spindrift she had out in front of her. So often, in fact, that by the end of our appointment she stopped bothering to pull her mask back up. That was a major customer service misstep that made us feel like we didn't want to even be there, but we had come a long way and my fiancé had already paid the $1,000 deposit on the custom ring process. The bigger issue, however, is that Mociun had not prepared a single stone that was what we asked for. Yes, specific stones take time to find. I understand. But if you have weeks to prepare for this meeting and are then unprepared for it when we arrive, why not tell us in advance? Maybe we could have rescheduled our meeting? During the appointment Caitlin also informed us that she was about to go on a month-long vacation. With her upcoming vacation and how long everything else had been taking (more than twice as long as their initial estimate), it was clear we would not get a ring any time soon. With our wedding only 5 months away, we were nervous. Adding another layer to all this, the ring we returned for credit was apparently not allowed to be put toward the custom ring, so we had to buy more things from Mociun to make use of that money. Is money paid not money going to the same store? It left a very bad taste in our mouth. Since we were already in NYC we went to several other jewelry stores in the city during our visit, and I ended up finding a unique antique ring at the very top end of our budget for $45k. Believing that we would never end up getting a ring from Mociun before our wedding date based on the last 6+ months of experiences, and since our $6,800 store credit could not be used toward the engagement ring anyway, we bought the existing ring from another jeweler and decided to use the credit for my wedding bands and wedding day earrings. Every jeweler we visited asked us where we had already been, and when we said "Mociun" they all had very obvious reactions in their faces, and many of them even said they hear a lot of bad things about customer experience there. Notably, nothing negative was mentioned about any other jewelry designer we mentioned. After placing the order for the pair of bands and earrings, my fiancé reached out multiple times to ask that his $1,000 deposit be given to him as at least a store credit, considering he was never shown a stone within the parameters requested in 6 months of working with Mociun. He even informed them that writing a review of our negative experience would be the likely outcome of not allowing us to use that money as a store credit, and this went on for weeks without any prompt responses--as seems to be standard with Mociun. Eventually the result was they canceled my wedding band and wedding earring order, refunded the $6,800 for the stand-in ring, and stated they would not be refunding or crediting the $1,000 deposit--and barely over 3 months before our wedding date--leaving us in a complete lurch for my wedding bands last-minute, and just before the start of the holiday season. Fortunately there is a wonderful female-owned custom jewelry shop in DC and they were able to design a custom band for me, nailing the design and stone selection in less than a week and on their first try. read more

Update update: I keep taking away stars as time goes on. I compare my interactions with other custom jewelers and jewelry designers. I've become somewhat of a jewelry enthusiast since my engagement stack and have more experience now. I'm also a designer and very picky, so anything custom has to be perfect and unique. I'm so happy I didn't go with Mociun for my engagement stack. Your local, reputable custom jeweler can take a Pinterest board and do wonders with it. Don't discount the local custom jeweler with decades (and sometimes generations) of experience. read more

We haven't heard from our custom specialist in 6weeks and counting. Of the stone options we've been provided since putting our deposit in June: 1st batch, received over a month after putting in deposit: (2 stones)not shape or cuts we were looking for. (3 stones) over budget by 2-4K, 1 of which was already sold? And none were really what we asked for but closer than the other two. We provided immediate feedback that same day and provided reference photos of other Mociun rings that were closer to what we were looking for in reference to shape and cut. 2nd "batch" we received about a week later. The (1) stone showed promise, it was only slightly over budget, but the photo we received was incredibly blurry and we did not feel comfortable moving forward without better images. We responded immediately with this feedback and was told they were going to "call the stone in" so they could take better photos. --this was 3 months ago and we've never seen new photos of this stone. We followed up for a little over a month on this option but still no photos. 3rd batch of stones was received over a month after the last batch and 2.5 months after deposit was given. All 3 stones provided were 3-6k over our agreed to budget. We provided feedback within 24 hours and have not heard from Mociun in 6 weeks. To be clear, we have been consistent about our wants from the start (elongated rose-cut geo diamond about 1 carat in size) we were told both in person when we flew to New York to come to the store (we live in Los Angeles) and also in our initial conversations before and after putting the deposit down that this was possible within our budget. In 5 months we've received exactly 0 stones that fit within those parameters. And the few that did fit the aesthetic description, all were several thousands of dollars above our budget. It is irresponsible to confirm a budget with clients several times before and after receiving a deposit and ensure that these needs can be met and 4.5 months into this "process" and we are no closer to getting a phone call or email response than we are to having a ring. For a company that boasts itself on a custom process with "unique" and "unusual" stones and settings as part of their custom process we've more often than not received perfect and traditional shapes throughout this process. On numerous occasions we have asked our custom specialist to give us more frequent updates even if they are non-updates (ie we inquired with three vendors this week and they don't have anything that fits your needs at this time, etc) and in response our wait time between emails have gone from 3 weeks to 4 weeks and now 6 weeks and counting. We called the store earlier this week to check in with our specialist. We were told she was unavailable but the person on the phone confirmed to us that we would receive a call back later that day or the next day. Neither has happened. We decided on Mociun because we thought they were going to be able to give us the custom engagement ring of our dreams. This process has been nothing but a nightmare. Reviews we've read have also been worrying (received cracked stones, heavily included even though official reports provided did not show those inclusions etc) have only put us off even more during this process. There is no doubt that Caitlin has an incredible eye for jewelry design but if the company is unable to provide clear communication, deliver on predetermined budgets or deliver jewelry that does not incur additional cracks or flaws than they have no business being in high end jewelry design. read more

I had a truly awful experience with MOCIUN. I previously had an engagement ring from there and wanting to keep it at the same jeweler, sent it back to be reset as a necklace. Well, the process wound up taking over 4 months (when it was supposed to take 1) during which the person I was coordinating with got fired, never communicated to the team about my project (nothing had happened with it), they gave me wrong price quotes, didn't respond to emails or calls and made the whole process awful. I'm so sad because I really did like them before but now this necklace will be a bad reminder of my horrible experience with them. I caution you to not use them and go to Catbird (where I've had great experiences) or elsewhere. Truly awful. read more

PSA: Before you consider making a purchase as Mociun, please do yourself a favor and read the reviews from BOTH Yelp pages ("Mociun" and "Mociun Home") as well as their Glassdoor reviews. I had also been a huge fan of Mociun's jewelry and had been following Caitlin's work for several years. There is no question that it is beautiful and unique. Unfortunately, the company is extremely shady and their quality is questionable (I've read reviews about cracked stones, worrying inclusions, stones constantly falling out, stones that change color due to poor quality, etc.). Buying an engagement ring is supposed to be a very exciting experience. This was definitely not the case with Mociun. Mociun will make the experience anything but pleasant. They simply do not care about anything other than making more money. We contacted Mociun when we noticed what appeared to be a crack within the stone of my new engagement ring. We were told conflicting conclusions about this crack/inclusion. At one point, it was an inclusion and a scratch, then two separate inclusions, and finally one big inclusion that reached to the surface (which is a crack and when I asked about this I was told that inclusions and cracks can be the same thing). At first, the stone had a tiny inclusion and then we were being told that it was a heavily included stone. Yet, they also reassured us several times that the ring was like this before it was purchased and that we had done nothing wrong to it. However, they refused to offer any guarantee or assurance that the crack would not worsen nor weaken the stone in the future. This contradicts what they told my fiancé when he purchased the ring. They had assured him that they had impeccable customer service and would take good care of us. They kept repeating that it was structurally sound and that they had several people inspect it and they concluded that the inclusion should not cause further damage to the stone. When we asked for a report on one of the "several" inspections they had conducted, they said they could not provide one. We also asked why the flaw was not reported in the gem report that came with the purchase of the ring but were not able to get an answer. When we asked to speak with Caitlin, they initially told us that we could but later said that that would not be possible. Instead of replacing the cracked stone that they sold us (or any other alternatives that would have been equally fair), they instructed us to either PURCHASE another stone or purchase ring insurance so that the insurance could fix their wrong doing. However, when we contacted the insurance company they recommended (Jewelers Mutual), we were told that they would not cover any potential damage caused by an inclusion with a stone. The insurance company referred to it as an "inherent vice" which is further evidence that Mociun has done us dirty. Like many of the honest reviewers here, we wish we had seen the "Mociun Home" Yelp page before doing shopping at Mociun. read more

After a while of living in Brooklyn near the store, when the time came to pick out a ring I had relocated across the country. Caitlin and her team worked closely with my fiancé and me to make the experience as special as possible from California. We knew we wanted the Sun and Moon design and had a consultation call with Caitlin to discuss ways of making it uniquely ours. She answered all of our questions and sent over videos and information on different stone options. A month later my fiancé received the ring. It's incredibly beautiful and high quality and I genuinely love it. For the band, they sent over videos of a Sun and Moon ring they had on hand with several options so I felt fully informed. I purchased my wife's engagement ring and wedding band from Mociun. They were easy to work with and I knew Caitlin & team would do an amazing job. For the engagement ring, I worked with Caitlin to develop a custom rose cut arch cluster ring with a rose cut diamond with 5 rose cut diamonds in a half moon shape. It's a beautiful ring and my wife constantly gets compliments on its overall beauty and uniqueness. I get many compliments on my design skills as well, which is nice too! For the wedding band, we visited Mociun's store and purchased a curve shaped ring with diamonds set in 14K yellow gold that paired perfectly with the engagement ring's unique shape. I worked with Mociun on a custom engagement ring. I had been following Mociun for years on social media and had become a big fan of her designs. I have to say I was let down by the process itself. I know Caitlin works with lots of clients remotely so I'd hoped for a smooth process since I was purchasing from the west coast. The stone I fell in love with (a super clear sapphire) was a bit higher than our price range but I decided to go for it. The materials they sent when I signed the custom ring agreement said I'd meet with Caitlin, but I never was offered the chance to talk with her. Instead I went through a "custom consultant" who often had to get back to me with answers to my questions. As a result of this game of telephone, I ended up not feeling confident about my choices -- the responses weren't always clear so I did my best with limited information. It took days to get responses, and often I'd have to follow up by phone, so it was not easy to get even this level of info. The biggest disappointment though was that when I received the ring, the first thing I noticed was a big spot on the surface of the large, clear stone in the center. It was so glaring I immediately wrote to Mociun and asked if they could clean the ring as there seemed to be some dirt on it that I couldn't get off. I sent photos and they said it wasn't on the ring when they shipped it. I was told they were consulting with Caitlin, and a few days later I got a message that it was an inclusion, so just part of the stone. When I looked back at the photos they sent of the stone before the ring was made, I can easily see the inclusion (now that I know what to look for). I was disappointed that this really obvious flaw wasn't pointed out to me when I was shown photos of the stones--this stone in particular was desirable because it was as clear as glass. I wish I'd known it had a spot on it, and I also wish they'd set it with the inclusion on the bottom so it wouldn't be so obvious. I'm not a jewelry expert so was relying on Mociun to help me understand what I was buying. In the end I'm happy to be engaged and I do like the ring, inclusion (and feeling of deception) aside. I just wish I hadn't gone above my price range, I wish the Mociun staff had been a little more helpful and transparent with what I was buying, and I wish I'd had the chance to get my questions answered by the actual jewelry designer. I had a perfect experience designing a custom engagement ring with Caitlin from abroad (UK). I had a fairly clear idea in my head of the design but was guided perfectly by Caitlin during our phone consultation when it came to choosing the final stones for the cluster. The online consultation process worked well and the communication with Caitlin's assistants (Elise and Sahar) was exceptional. I picked up the ring from the store in New York while on business - it was ready on time and the pickup experience was very easy. The ring is exactly what I wanted and my partner has since said the ring took her breath away when she first saw it and she has hardly been able to take her eyes off it since. Almost everyday someone has remarked on how special it is. You are very talented jewelers and we are very grateful for the effort and skill that went into this ring. I worked remotely with the Mociun team to build a custom engagement ring at Mociun. First off, I am ecstatic with the result and was very comfortable with the process. I appreciate that they stick to your budget and make every effort to produce the ring you want. They are very friendly and professional. As far as any major Jewelry purchase goes, you should buy insurance because the 6 month warranty is limited to product defect, not accident of damage or from inherent vice. Echoing Carleen's comments below, Mociun really needs to revisit their quality/warranty policy and its affect on their customer relations. My fiance's (admittedly beautiful, one-of-a-kind) $13,500 engagement ring (purchased 8 mos prior) collapsed around her finger when she caught a closing door at an art gallery. We brought it straight to Mociun and asked them what to do. At their advice, we had to take it around the corner to Fitzgerald and have it cut off (the ring, not the finger:). We cannot speak highly enough about Fitzgerald, they were the bright spot in all of this, they would not accept a tip from me. We brought it back to Mociun and they said it would have to be rebuilt. I naively assumed that this would be covered by Mociun, but after 3 phone calls with increasingly sr. management, it was made clear that the best they would do is facilitate a rebuild "at cost" (i.e. i would need to pay $450 to get the ring back to the condition in which we purchased it). We can all go online and see that Mociun's prices are well above the "commodity cost", but any future customer should know that this premium pricing does not imply that they will not make any concessions if there is an issue. Through our discussions, they confirmed that, even if we had been under the 6 month warranty, the repair would not have been covered. Thanks for reading. read more
