My phone stopped backing up to iCloud about 1 week into the vacation (even though I had it been connected to power and wi-fi every night). I suspected the phone had water damage. I took it to the Apple Store and explained that my main concern was recovering my photos. They did a quick diagnostic and could not get a response from the phone. The Apple Store said that they cannot repair water damage and would need to replace the logic board which would mean I would lose all the data and that it would cost about half the price of a new phone. They referred me to a data recovery business that everyone online says charges exorbitant fees, likely thousands of dollars. I decided to give GadgetMates a try as their website lists water damage and iPhone data recovery among their services. I brought my phone to them late on a Friday afternoon and they said they would diagnose it and get back to me. I expected to hear back Monday with some bad news, but was surprised when they called me back an hour or two later saying the phone just needs a new screen, power port, and proximity flex cable and the cost would be about half of what the Apple Store quoted. Most importantly, the logic board was intact. I swung by their store to enter my pin while they had it hooked up to a new screen so I could confirm the photos were all there. They were able to fix it that same day while I waited in their shop playing some arcade games. I highly recommend GadgetMates for any phone issues and wouldn't hesitate to use them again should the need arise.

Inside the building there was a printed notice saying they operate Friday-Saturday only, but their Google listing still shows normal weekday hours. Communication was terrible from start to finish. Calls were often ignored, "I'll send it tomorrow" turned into days of silence, and nothing was clearly explained in writing. The pickup situation was the most frustrating part. He called and told me to come at 7:30. I started driving. Then he changed it to 8:00. Then he changed it again and told me to come "tomorrow at 12 during business hours" while I was already on my way. Complete disrespect for a customer's time. For the "diagnosis," he claimed there was a cracked LCD (lower left) and said the screen must be replaced, but refused to provide any clear photo or proof. He kept saying the screen is dark and only sometimes turns on, so he "can't guarantee a picture." I asked multiple times for proof, pricing, and a written explanation. I received none. He was rude, kept interrupting, and repeatedly bragged about being "15 years in business" instead of answering basic questions. He also insisted I told him I dropped the laptop, which I never said. After a few days he called and said he doesn't have parts available, and then suddenly demanded $88 for diagnostic, which was never clearly disclosed upfront. When I came to pick up the laptop, he told me he "doesn't want to do business" with me. I immediately took the laptop to another repair shop and they said it would not power on at all. They are still diagnosing it, but now I'm dealing with a worse situation than when I first brought it in.
