Desvelado is a Spanish adjective meaning sleepless, wide awake, or unable to sleep. Insomnia, in other words. It seems to me that insomnia would be better suited to the name of a coffee shop than a Mexican restaurant, but names have never been my department. Let me begin by saying that the food was good, the beer was cold, and the bill was so reasonable that you almost felt you had gotten away with something. The place itself is another matter. The decorations are gauche in the determined way of a restaurant that has been decorated rather than furnished. The music is loud enough to discourage conversation, and the temperature was kept a skosh below uncomfortable, as though the management had made a study of the precise point at which a person begins to sweat. I had two El Sonora tacos, one beef and one carnitas, and both were excellent. The Anaheim pepper, stuffed with cheese, was the thing that pushed the taco from merely good into the territory of something worth remembering. The signature flautas were also very good, which surprised me because I have never been much of a flauta man. The beer came properly cold. They serve Victoria, my favorite Mexican beer and one that, for reasons I have never understood, is not available in nearly as many places as it ought to be. Then there was the bad. A waitress pushed two tables together to make a four-top. The resulting table was so uneven that it appeared to be considering collapse. It teetered to one side throughout the meal, and although the problem could have been corrected with two folded napkins under a table leg, nobody seemed interested in conducting such an operation. And then there was the ugly. A man sitting at the bar was eating his dinner and drinking a beer while taking intermittent puffs from a vape. There was something about the whole arrangement, the beer, the food, the vapor hanging around his face that made the place feel, for a moment, less like Southern California and more like Mexico. I suppose that is part of the charm they were going for. Anyway, the food was good. The beer was cold. The prices were fair. But restaurants are made up of more than tacos and beer, and Desvelado never quite managed to get the rest of it right. I can say with some confidence that I might be back. read more

The only one that was a little lacking for me was the al pastor -- I wish it had piña and more of that authentic sabor del trompo. We came here because of yelp. We loved the tacos and flautas. Steak, shrimp, birria, and carnitas. I love the avocado options on my tacos, and they were delicious. I just would have liked the steak to be cut and not a whole piece. We loved the flautas so much we ordered a second round. Server was great and friendly. But in the end somehow we couldn't add a tip to the credit card receipt Luckily we had cash, but she wouldn't have got a tip if we didn't have cash. Came here for my bday and it was super spacious for a party of 8. It was busy 1pm-3pm on a Sunday. Only thing that sucks is one guy who was behind the bar, the waiter and in charge of all the tables- obviously that's a lot for one person so the service was a little slow, but his service was 10/10 amazing for handling all that. Definitely wished they had another person to bring out food... If you're coming here, just try all the tacos, Good tortillas and savory meats!! I got the Coronel tacos that comes with pina and it was bomb! The Aguachile wasn't great, the sauce just tasted like lime and water. I would just stick to the tacos. Just came back from Las Vegas last night and I didn't have a chance to try the David Chang Asian Mexican fusion at the cosmopolitan hotel ... BUT, as it turns out maybe I shouldn't! Desvelados (I translation must mean "definitively fabulous ") is a testament to a grandmother's recipes and the history of old traditions. I usually don't post menus but the menus say it all, and besides I'm too busy enjoying the delicious flavors. They have a little bit of everything for everyone. I ordered La Mamalona which is like a quesadilla with carne asada and shrimp and guacamole. BOMB. I added the green salsa. I've been to a few locations, and this one is definitely the best so far. The service here was noticeably better the servers were attentive, friendly, and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. The tacos were sooo good. El Desvelado was one of my favorites the breaded shrimp with chipotle sauce was absolutely amazing. So much flavor and perfectly cooked. El Padrino was also a standout. The meat was cooked really well and packed with flavor in every bite. I tried the Pepino Picoso too it was good, but I probably wouldn't order it again since it had a slightly bitter aftertaste for me personally. Maybe don't come with a large group of friends because of how small the place is but do come hungry. I am not from the area but I was able to find street parking nearby with no problem. The waitress was very helpful and provided great service. She informed us that the alcohol they use for certain cocktails is Agave Wine. The food portions were a nice size and best part is HANDMADE TORTILLAS! If you know me, I am a huge sucker for fresh made tortillas. Ensenada taco (shrimp) is a 10/10! The shrimp were HUGE (not like other places) and the sauce they use is FIRE!!! Carnitas taco is a 10/10! The meat was tender (certain places they give you more fat than meat) and paired with their salsa was delicious Al Pastor taco is a 9/10...it would have been a solid 10 IF there was pineapple. The meat was also tender and very flavorful Quesabirria taco is a 9/10! The tortilla kept falling apart which made it difficult to dip in the consome and eat.
