My nephew took us to dine out, to a highly recommended Pakistani restaurant in Virginia. We drove 45 minutes, waited fifteen minutes for the food and it was all worth it. Two different kinds of delicious chicken biryani along with goat karahi, mouth watering chapli kababs, bheja curry and the fresh out of tundoor hot naans is something which we have rarely found anywhere. This was my first time at Bethak. The service was horrible. The plate of chicken biryani was oily with only one small piece of chicken. The goat karahi was good. The chicken karahi was just o.k. The naan was crunchy. The chicken samosas were good however, they looked like they were purchased from Trader Joe's. They were not home made samosas. We had to find our own seating in the restaurant basement. No menus. We had to access their menu from their website on our cell phones to order. Our order had to be placed at the front of the restaurant with the cashier because they did not have waiters to take our order. Then got nihari and it was terrible. We came here on a weekend around 8:00 pm. Their excuse was that there is a wedding. Other families near me returned the food. 120% DON'T recommend this place, I had to walk out without taking my pick up order. The manager or owner of the place was very rude and disrespectful. He came to me while I was sitting down waiting for my order and said 'get up from the table and go sit there' pointing with his finger at the end of the restaurant. This all while no one was there yet who needed to use the table where I was sitting. I got up but I was shocked. I decided to stand on the side. 2 mins later my order was ready. When I said to him that he was rude and disrespectful to tell a customer to get up from the chair to seat someone else who wasn't even there was rude. Besides I was there first and there were no 'reserved' sign. He got mad and kept arguing with me and raising his voice at me. He took out his mask and yelled ' I didn't do anything wrong' He didn't even apologize or tried to resolve it. I was very disappointed and left without taking my food. The conclusion is that this place does not respect different ethnicities and especially women. Also, IF YOU ARE NOT DESI DO NOT GO THERE, They will treat you differently. I am not going back there for sure and will share my experience with everyone I know. Came across to this place through yelp, i live in Brooklyn was visiting the area, first of all I'm so lucky to have this amazing Pakistani Ramzan iftar buffet. Food is perfection and all the employees were so friendly and hospitality was A1. Appetizer to main dishes to deserts each and every dish was mouth watering and the buffet price you cant beat for the quality you are getting. Went to Desi Bethak today with family. This was our third visit. We ordered the biryani, bihari kabab, bun kabab and nihari. The food was fresh and everything was yummy. The naan took a long time to come and meanwhile our nihari got cold. But that's okay as every restaurant has their good and bad days. The bihari was on the harder side but Baba Tahir told us that beforehand as they had ran out of bihari last night so there was insufficient time for proper marination for the meat to be soft. However, the spice level was great. We loved the food despite these little hiccups and will definitely come again! Keep up the good work. read more

This restaurant is a 3.5 out of 5. Here's what I ordered... Samosa Chaat, Papri Chaat, Aloo Samosa, Chicken Samosa, Chicken Karahi, Butter Chicken, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Seekh Kabob and Beef Bahari Boti. I feel like we ordered enough food to give this place a proper review. The restaurant itself is not what I expected. Small space seating in the main area. If you can't get a seat there, then you will placed in the wedding hall. My personal opinion, I feel like it was odd sitting in the wedding hall area. Would have expected them to only have that setup when there is an actual wedding and tear it down and turn it in to a regular sitting area. Also, one thing that we all noticed was the smell of cigarettes smoke in the wedding hall which was off-putting. Let's get into the food: -The chaat and the samosa.. decent. Nothing special about it. Have had better but not complaining. Rating 3 out of 5 -Chicken Karahi was tasty. Nicely spiced and a decent serving size for the price. Rating 3.8 out of 5 -Butter Chicken.... where was the chicken?!? I am not trying to exaggerate but there were 4 small pieces of chicken (which tasted like rubber) in the entire dish. TONS of gravy/curry but again no chicken. Rating this just on the taste, I would give this dish a 2 out of 5. -Chicken Biryani - this was probably my favorite dish of the night but again its biryani. Can't go wrong with biryani. Rating 4.2 out of 5 Chicken Seekh Kabob - again nothing special about this. Was expecting more flavor from the dish but at least it was juicy. Rating 3 out of 5 Beef Bahari Boti - the majority of the people did not enjoy this dish. Personal opinion, I will always order this if its on the menu. Again, lack of flavor. Rating 2.75 out of 5 One last thing. All of the food, besides the Chicken Karahi was served on paper plates. Since this is a proper dine-in restaurant, I would have expected it to be served on something a bit more presentable. Such a bad experience. Waited for over 40 min.. if such a wait is expected it should be told at the time of order. I stood for 10 minutes to get an update and finally had to get the attention of the girl to get the response and then the man gave me attitude stating the food was ready and they had been calling my name which was completely untrue. We had a great experience here. The staff was very nice and the owner came out and talked to us for a few minutes. My wife had the chicken tikka and it was absolutely amazing. This place claims to give you the Karachi food experience and being a Karachite myself I was very much excited and had great expectations. Once we arrived to the restaurant, seating and parking were not an issue however there was no waiter, you just place your order and then take it from the counter when it's ready so basically self serve. The waiting time was quite long, about 20-30 minutes, but it was worth it in my opinion. I did note one family, sitting not to far from us, had been waiting longer than us and once they finally received their orders, they were given beef instead of chicken steak and burger with one of the combo orders even missing fries. I could see they were quite disappointed with the service. We ordered Karachi chicken biryani which was only $4.99! Not only is the price great but it's honestly the best biryani I've had compared to all the other desi restaurants in the area. We also tried the bun kabob and boy was I amazed, it was just like the ones you would get at a stall in Karachi! Didn't get to try the other dishes on the menu but I'm so impressed with what I had that I'm excited to come back for more. Overall, they do need to work on service a little more, perhaps add a waiter to ensure there are no mixups in the orders. However, I still recommend everyone to come and try the food, it's definitely worth it! read more

We went to the restaurant on Eid evening. The tables were more than 6 feet apart and the cashier was wearing a mask. We ordered Chicken Karahi, Mutton Karahi, samosas,Biryani and kabab platter. The chicken Karahi was excellent. Would highly recommend it. Mutton Karahi was okay. Not much meat on the bones. Samosas were good as well. I can't rate the biryani as it was sold out and we got the last plate that was available. I was not impressed by it but it could be that it was the plate and did not have much masala. I went to Bethak for a late lunch today and was disappointed. The food was way too spicy. I ordered chicken biryani, mutton works and chicken seekh kebab. The biryani came with ummm one and a half pieces of chicken, a leg and something else kinda small. It was very spicy. The chutney may as well have been green water with spice added to it. What's worse is two of the containers were only half full which made me think they could be serving left over chutney the mutton qorma was very spicy too. The meat wasn't exactly tender either and salt was on the higher side too. The chicken kebab were so so. Like when you add too much flour to them and they look all pasty. The naan were great around the edges but paper thin and crisp in the center. Three hours later I have a heart burn from all the mirch. Safe to assume i won't go back there, ever. read more

Came here for my husband's birthday. Food was very flavorful. Service was a bit slow but we did have a fairly large group - about 13 people - but to be honest, the food was worth the wait. AC was not working and it was a 90 degree day so it was sweltering inside. The two oscillating fans did little to keep the temp down. The food though is the star of this restaurant. I would have passed their unassuming storefront a thousand times without thinking of eating there, but trust me, it's worth a try. We will definitely be back. read more

We went there once. The restaurant is at an odd location in the middle of the warehouses. The outside sitting area is like in the parking. The food was good. We specially liked the Shinwari karahi. It wasn't authenticate Shinwari because Shinwari has less curry/masala but their karahi had a lot of curry/masala, but still the taste was great so we liked it. Biryani was also good and also kababs. We called on the way to the order so we don't have to told, I wanted to have fried fish and they said they are sold out. I asked for Maghaz masala and that was sold out too. I don't like when restaurants put items on their menu and then they say it is sold out. If they don't get enough quantity then they shouldn't put it on their menu then. One thing I really don't like is that their prices are a lot higher than other good restaurants. I mean $45 for Lamb/Goat Karahi is too much. On top of that they add 18% service charge on the total. That is not good. I know restaurants usually do it for 6+ people (although I don't like that either), but recently a lot of these desi restaurants have started adding this service fee on less than 6 people also. That is really not good and unfair. The services charges should have already been worked into the food prices. Only because of these things, I have given them 3 stars. read more

The food is inconsistent. I have been here several times only for the biryani, which some days is as good as it gets in the whole DMV area and some days; the worst. But the factor for giving a poor rating is purely based on customer service. The owner discriminates and with this attitude he won't be able to gain a lot of success. It has happened almost 3 times with me! For the friends of the owner, he goes in the back to get the fresh, piping hot biryani with extra meat. But for the rest of the public, he gives the slightly stale biryani from the hot pot in the front. The last time I went, I had placed an order for two biryanis and the guy after me also placed the same order. The owner joked with the guy and told him he'll get a fresh plate for him from the back, while I'm standing right there!! In the meantime, the girl in the front rummaged all the way to the bottom of the pot to give me the last remains of the biryani. I was watching from a distance and was going to complain to the owner. But things happened for the best. The owner came back to give the guy the biryani but he had gone to the bathroom. I got up to complain but the girl packed the fresh biryani for me and gave the other guy the stale biryani. Of course she had no idea because the owner saw from the kitchen and started harassing her as to why she gave his friend the 'public' biryani. But, the damage had been done!! read more

I read the reviews and was skeptical but we decided to give it a try last Saturday. So before we went I called the place to hold a table. I happened to talk to the owners wife, who helped us order the correct food. This place is not a fancy place. You should know what to order especially on weekends. Everything we ordered was simply amazing. We ordered the kebab platter and white Karahi and Nihari (to go). I give them 4/5 for food. The place is small and not well kept, which is similar to most Pakistani places, which serve really good food, but not sure why they cannot keep their restaurants clean. Esp when their food is so good. The owner is the main chef and he can really cook. They have 7 different types of Karahi. They Boti and Behari kebabs were really amazing. The chicken kebabs were ok 3/5. Their Karahi 5/5 and Nihari 5/5. Their biryani looked really good. We ordered the food before we got there. So the food was almost ready when we got there. It took them 5 mins to get us a table. We will definitely visit this place again. Hope they maintain the food quality. Remember this is a Mom and Pop shop are they are not professional. read more

Ordered a dine in. Chicken Biryani and Chicken Zinger burger with fries. It took them about 30-40 minutes to cook. Even though biryani was ready I asked them to bring the food together and I would wait for the sandwich to cook. However the order arrived. We had ordered a zinger burger with fries and chicken biryani. Instead we got zinger burger with no fries and beef biryani. Realizing that the it was beef biryani I went up to the counter and requested them to replace it. Had to show them my receipt to ensure I wasn't trying to change my order. I was asked to take a seat and was told I will get my food on the table. I went back and after 5 minutes we get a plate of fries. I looked at the server (who I found out is the owner of the restaurant) and asked what happened to the biryani? He said oh it's almost ready I will bring it right over. I glanced over and saw him putting biryani from the pot that was sitting there. However we got our food in an hour or so. The zinger was made really good but I really went there for the hype of their biryani. Biryani was bland. The spices were not mixed well. I got 3 different taste in one biryani. I could taste biryani, boiled rice and chicken freshly coming out of stew. So far the worst experience of biryani ever. I heard they have changed a lot of things now. OK so, the chicken briyani is hands down one of the best I've had at a restaurant, which is by the way how i heard of them thru my co worker. He brought me a 5 dollar chicken briyani bowl and I fell in love. Following that I came repeatedly for a few day after work to pick up some and take home but every time they ran out of the chicken one. I complained about it to the two teenage boys working the counter one of them responded in a mannerism in which he couldn't care less, which was another point down for this new establishment. But either way I end up buying beef briyani and it was absolutely terrible, anyone at home can make briyani 10x better with a Shan spice packet, not to mention the beef is also more expensive then chicken. Will not be going again. Need to meet supply and demand for their top items, and need to put someone respectable in charge of taking orders. Cant say much else bout the food. read more
