Immediately the bartenders (Elexus and Katie) showed us why the Little Bar should have been the originally planned destination. The drinks were not only delicious but they looked like works of art. The word "delicious" does not do the food appropriate justice. After tasting the pozole, we absolutely had to meet the chef (Polama[sic]). The overall experience was so awesome that we promised Elexus and Katie that any time that we're in Palm Desert again we will definitely make plans to visit Little Bar.

If you're gonna have lunch in a clothing store, definitely make it Tommy Bahama. Now, to be fair,…read morewhile some locations are attached to a store, this outpost on El Paseo is a completely separate venue, across the street from the clothing and furniture stores, and if you knew nothing about it, you'd never think this lovely restaurant was even related. The vibe is Caribbean chic, with woods and off-white tones to the decor, and a staff that finds the right balance between friendly attentiveness and laidback calm to make you relax and get comfortable. We sat at the bar and were tended to by Mandy (who confirmed she was named for the Manilow song); she was lively and full of suggestions, and kept tabs on us very well. I'll add that the other bartenders were just as friendly when they pitched in, as were the food runners. We were just aiming for a snack, so we ordered the Skillet Biscuits and Lobster Skewers. The biscuits came piping hot and packed with flavor. Flaky and buttery, with a pleasing crown of Maldon salt, they melted in your mouth, and paired perfectly with either of the accompanying spreads. Honey butter was sweet but not too much so, and Pimento Cheese had just the right combination of funk and spice. The Lobster Skewers were light and tasty: the tail of a slipper lobster, split, spiked and grilled over fire, landing with the look and aroma of something that's been through the flames. Served with clarified butter for dipping, the tender lobster meat was fresh and satisfying. But the big surprise was the accompanying Succotash, a vegetable medley I usually dislike and had planned to leave untouched. I decided to try it because it looked so good, and it sure was terrific. Fresh corn and baby squash bathed in lemon and butter, and lightly seasoned, it really was a terrific bite. I should also mention that I ordered a cocktail: the Berry Proper, made with gin, Framboise, lemon and a dash of simple syrup. It was equal parts sweet and tart, and wholly refreshing. It was a light lunch split between two, but it was very tasty, and far more satisfying than the usual sandwich or burger. Kudos to Mandy and the team.

It's along El Paseo before you hit the main shopping area, depending on which way you come. Entrance has a nice wall created by ficus trees and mister spraying to keep you cool. There's a decent patio with a good amount of seating. Inside is where the party is. The place is set with two seating area. Right when you walk in is the bar. A good amount of hi top seating and tables. Hi top seating that are along the window were actually very uncomfortable. Padded seats were so narrow that seating was so uncomfortable but oh well. There's the other room seating area which houses all the wine on shelves. I believe it's also a wine store but that sectioned was closed for a private event. We just wanted a drink before dinner so no food was had. From the looks of the dishes that were coming out, they looked really nice. Tapas style dishes made for sharing. With happy hour, there was a couple dishes that was included. Also they offered a deal with a charcuterie board and a bottle included. We just went with a glass of their house red and white. And an order of spicy margaritas. It's a full bar so that was nice. Margaritas were great and house wine was decent. The service was great with the bartender who was a doll and very sweet. The space felt open, elegant, and immediately welcoming. Talk about fine dining at its best. The hostess was able to quickly seat our party of six, and our server immediately brought over the menus and filled our water glasses. THE FOOD: We started with the oysters , and they did not disappoint. They were served with a shallot mignonette which was vinegary in all the right ways. They were so good, that we ended up ordering a second round. For dinner, we all ordered the steak with mushrooms and broccoli. The steak was perfectly cooked, and every bite was bursting with flavor. Even the mushrooms and broccoli stood out. Everything was seasoned beautifully without overpowering the actual flavors of the vegetables. Even the bread was so good. It was served with three different butters. And dessert? Also top notch. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful dinner with friends. THE SERVICE: The service really added to the experience. Our server was attentive and took great care of us. The GM, Ray, also stopped by our table, and we ended up chatting and joking with him a bit. He was incredibly friendly and personable and made sure we were having a great experience. Morgan's in the Desert: Disappointment After Disappointment. $400 for Meh…read more After living in La Quinta for four years, we were ready to try Morgan's, as it's one of the last foodie restaurants in the Coachella valley that we haven't tried. We arrived early for our reservation, excited to grab a drink at the bar before dinner. Then we were told our table was already available... only to be seated at a dining table in the bar, off to the side, where apparently servers do not exist while staring at the back of the pianist and the barflies. The two bartenders were fantastic--especially Brian, who was working at warp speed--but they already had a packed bar to manage. Adding dining tables to their workload was clearly not realistic. Why were we seated there? Still a mystery. Reservation problems: I booked through the QR code advertised in The Gem for the August prix fixe dinners at La Quinta Resort's restaurants. When we arrived, we were told the prix fixe menu wasn't available that day. Sorry! So we ordered bread and oysters instead. About 15-20 minutes later, the manager came over and said they would honor the prix fixe after all. Great! Except... we'd already ordered appetizers. ‍ And wow, was it SLOW. We were seated at 5:30 and still didn't have our entrées at 7:00. Drinks regularly sat empty, and once the restaurant got busy around 6:30, water refills disappeared completely. Did I mention it was 110 degrees outside? The food? A mixed bag--but overall, wildly overpriced and underwhelming. * Oysters: Ice-cold and served with a good mignonette. Also pricey. * Bread: Fresh and warm, but the olive tapenade was aggressively salty. Again, overpriced. * Watermelon salad: The winner! Refreshing, flavorful, and the spicy nuts gave it a nice kick. Highly recommend. * Chicken cacciatore: Dry chicken, undercooked tomatoes, overcooked pasta. Never again. * Oscar filet: Delicious and well-prepared, but nothing memorable or special--especially for the price. Bottom line: We spent about $400 for a frustrating, painfully slow, mostly mediocre meal. There are too many great restaurants in the area to spend that kind of money on "meh." We won't be back.

After waiting around 20 minutes, I decided to just grab a seat at the bar, and I'm actually glad I did. There was no wait, and even though the restaurant was packed, my food came out really fast. Jon was my primary server. He was polite but was not attentive, I didn't feel like we connected much during the meal. The front staff was very friendly, though, and helped me with some recommendations. I ordered the guacamole with chips and salsa, fried whole jalapeño, chile relleno, and rice and beans. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well seasoned. The guacamole was really good, the rice and beans had a lot of flavor, and the fried jalapeño with the habanero sauce had just the right amount of heat. If you like spicy food, I'd definitely recommend trying it. The chile relleno was recommended by Alvaro, and he told me it reminds him of his grandma whenever he eats it. I really liked hearing that because it made the recommendation feel personal, and he was absolutely right, it was delicious. Huge shoutout to Alvaro. He wasn't even my primary server, but he kept an eye on me, checked in, helped with recommendations, and made sure everyone around the bar was taken care of. He was just genuinely friendly and easy to talk to, and that stood out to me. For dessert, I tried the Pan de Elote for the first time, again on Alvaro's recommendation. I had never tried it before, but trust me, hands down, it was really good. I'm glad he convinced me to give it a try because it was the perfect way to finish the meal. The kitchen deserves a shoutout too. Everything came out cooked well and looked great.
