Lemon Drop Martini and Disco Lemonade
    Gil S.

When my boyfriend and I were in Palm Springs last month on vacation we came here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch we had drinks so it was a liquid lunch . The bartender was friendly and nice. I ordered the Disco Lemonade (Tito Vodka, Hibiscus, Fresh Lemonade). My boyfriend had a Lemon Drop Martini made w/Grey Goose. The restaurant feels like an underground place with an industrial design. We came back later in the week for dinner, we shared the Blackbook Burger (Bacon, Lettuce, Pickles, and Hickory Sauce) and fries. The burger was good perfectly cooked. The fries were hot and good. We will come back for sure on our next vacation.

Hadn't seen this place before and decided to drop in for a cocktail as it wasn't as loud as a couple of watering holes two doors down. I asked the bartender if this place was new and he sarcastically told me that I was too "soft spoken" as he could not hear what I said. I told him never mind and waved my hand like "whatever". For one, I don't like to be loud and shout out for others to hear. Lower the volume or get your ears checked if you can't hear! As for what we ordered (2 Tito's cocktails), extremely overpriced at 13.50/ea (not sure if it differs for happy hour). My bad for not asking beforehand. Aside from the snarky bartender & way overpriced (premium) drinks, the place is cute and lots of seating. The other two servers that approached us were very friendly and personable. Perhaps I'll give this place another try another visit and have a better experience.

Eddie was great made me a great specialty called dumb ass. It was so good you can really rate the pear with the ginger beer and mint. The guacamole literally knocked my socks off!" And with pollo asada tacos it really hit the spot will always be a stop for a snack and drink. Thanks again eddie! Great clean environment

Stopped in during our first visit to Palm Springs. It was a bit crowded but we luckily found two seats at the bar. Staff was quick to take our order and were very friendly. Looked like they have a vast selection of whiskeys but since it's the holiday season, we tried some of their cocktails. The drinks tasted great! Didn't order any food but it the menu and other peoples' food looked like yummy food expected at a gastropub.

This splashy gay bar just screamed Palm Springs to Jamie W and me, even in the middle of the afternoon when we were expecting it to be relatively empty. But no, small groups of aging men in either bright tank-tops or black T-shirts congregated around the tables, and the entire front of the bar was completely open to the balmy desert weather ready for the denizens to be checked out. The beefy bartenders were quite friendly to us, though I heard from a local friend that they can get testy the more crowded it gets. I can well imagine the shenanigans that might occur under a full moon. Compared to Streetbar across the street (review: https://yelp.to/73ePUEcmLt), drinks are rather pricey here as Espresso Martinis cost $18 each (photo: https://yelp.to/gnSplWQbWd). It's definitely the place to be seen on Arenas. DRINKS - 3.5 stars...a bit pricey for the kick they have AMBIANCE - 4 stars...the open concept works on a balmy day SERVICE - 4 stars...no issues for us TOTAL - 4 stars...the prototypical PS gay bar experience RELATED - Exploring Palm Springs? We grabbed a late night spot at the bar for some drinks after dinner. Sometimes gay bars that cater to men are downright rude to women so we were a little anxious but the fabulous bartenders both put us at ease right away. They were so friendly and helpful and super attentive. They helped me pick a good bourbon to enjoy on a rock and were so helpful to a young guy that came in and asked if they could maybe get food to go. The bartender was totally honest with him and said sometimes they can do TOGO orders if it's not too busy and he ran back to the kitchen to double check. As we chatted with this nice person it became evident that he and his hubby had to pack up their dogs and cherished possessions and flee the LA wildfires. I was so glad they could get some food at least. Check this place out! You'll have a great time.

Extremely disappointing experience. We ordered the house margarita, and it was completely underwhelming. The glass of water you see? Never once was I offered a refill. We ordered chips and salsa--which were great--but the guacamole we ordered never even arrived despite being told it was being made. The bald bartender pictured only checked on us once the entire time. He never returned to see if we needed anything else. Even worse, while making our drink, he was clearly talking to other patrons about us, who then turned and looked our way. That was not only unprofessional, it was uncomfortable. This was our second visit, and sadly, it will also be our last.

Blackbook hooked "I'm the only one...Who'll walk across the fire for you!!" This restaurant bar gastropub happy hour haven that has it's doors open (not literally this time of year) from Noon to midnight all 7 days in a week is a place to treat yourself - though now they're open until 1AM Monday through Saturday and until 11PM on Sundays (this might adjust as the weather cools in the late fall). Great music of all kinds, not to mention... Incredible drinks, super service savory eats, shameless sippable beverages and concoctions that will make you want to note B.B. in your little Black book of places you heart more than others. During the cooler seasons in Palm Springs Blackbook's patio is incredible to enjoy and they literally have their large glass doors open for a nice natural air floor whereas now, you strictly want to enjoy the comforts of tall tables, bar seating or some of their other options for having a great experience here. We came into town to have a long extended weekend of fun in celebration of a really good friend turning 32, Cliff. My friend's Adam, Shaun and his husband (also my friend) Carl had a drink or two after some AC shopping on Arenas (Road) where this gem resides. We got to choose are seating and it wasn't too busy yet around 1PM. I knew they had a ton of options, but the vegan and vegetarian ones really swept me away. Garlic Adobo Yuca Fries (sooo many, so delicious), chips, guac, salsa, vegan street tacos, Mediterranean salad and those Mediterranean Sandwich sliders that even my (very non veggie friends) went wild for as I shared a bit, especially my friend Cliff. So many fries on the table, I couldn't believe how filling everything was - some of the guys had the nachos which were a hit - these are all vegetarian, but fun foodie fact you is they have a vegan protein option to top those with aside from carne asada and pollo asada. Would love to see an all plant-based version of their nachos one day as I'm sure it be just as incredible as everything else. My Jack and Coke was crazy delicious and Arenas pour strong. Would recommend Hello Kitty Kitty (vodka based), The Modernist (gin based) and Disco Lemonade for signatures. Full menu of beer, wine, sodas and all sorts of drinkables. We loved our server. He was beyond attentive, considerate and helpful. Reasonable prices, very mindful, very cutesy, very Blackbook.

    Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and fries

Stopped in for a gastropub dinner after happy hour cocktails on Arenas. The Buffalo Chicken sandwich hit the spot, tasty, spicy. For me, the star was accompanying fresh cut fries. Enjoy the vibe and ask for a table outside and people watch.

    A cute little setup!

The drinks were strong and well-made, and even though the place was packed, our waitress stayed attentive and checked in with us consistently. It's clear they specialize in more elaborate cocktails, so a bit of a wait is understandable. The ambiance is also a highlight--dark, intimate, and really leans into the tiki vibe. **Night two** was the complete opposite. We accidentally mixed up our reservation time, but since the place was nearly empty, we were seated right away, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, everything went downhill from there. We had a different waitress, and despite being one of only a few parties there when we arrived, we waited **45 minutes** without seeing our drinks--while other groups seated after us were already being served (and even getting second rounds). We eventually had to flag down our waitress, who had hardly checked on us at all. When we asked about the delay, she said they were "very busy,". After mentioning how long we'd been waiting, there wasn't any real apology--just visible annoyance. She told us our drinks were "up next," but after another 20 minutes passed with nothing, we decided to leave after over an hour of waiting. It was disappointing, especially after such a positive first experience. A simple apology or some communication would have gone a long way. Sadly, the inconsistency makes it hard to know which version of this place you're going to get.

Neil was welcoming, accommodating, and personally secured a table for our party of six when we returned after 9pm. His hospitality and the venue concept itself are excellent. Unfortunately, the service we received afterward from another staff member, Billy, did not match that standard. The venue is extremely dark, so we used the small table lamp to read the menu. Billy instructed us not to use it because it "wasn't the vibe of the establishment," and told us to use our phone lights instead. The tone was abrupt and dismissive. Around 9:50pm he announced last call. When one guest ordered, his response was, "I guess if you must." Others asked for a moment to decide and were repeatedly rushed. We explained we weren't aware they closed as 10, as Neil had told us it would be open seating after 10. He replied, "Yeah, well I'm closing tonight and I'm closing at 10." When drinks were delivered, they were set down forcefully. As we were leaving, a member of our group overheard Billy speaking negatively about us to another employee, including mocking someone in our group for needing glasses to read the menu and implying she was intoxicated (she wasn't). When this was addressed directly, he did not apologize and instead insisted we had overstayed, which is inaccurate. We ordered promptly after being told last call and left after finishing our drinks. We are locals who intentionally brought out-of-town guests here because we wanted them to have a great experience. It's disappointing that one staff member's conduct overshadowed what should have been a highlight of their visit. I won't assign motives, but I will note that Billy's demeanor noticeably shifted after the final member of our group, who happens to be Black, arrived. I cannot determine why, only that the change in tone was clear. Neil has created something special here. However, a venue's reputation ultimately depends on how guests are treated when ownership is not present. Based on this visit, there is a significant gap between the hospitality the owner provides and the service delivered in his absence. I hope Neil takes a close look at what happens when he's not present, because with the right staff, this could easily be a place we'd want to return to.

We went ahead and waited until he was ready without rushing him because we ourselves weren't in any rush at all. Surrounded by a ton of nice interesting artwork, it was a pure joy to enjoy a drink or two in this environment. The bar can be found at the corner on the other side of the hotel concierge in plain sight from such a big space for a lobby, directly left upon entrance through the front. Since it was slow in the morning, we were able to chat it up with the bartender and even explore a bit of experimentation in the form of a particular top secret cocktail that every mixologist knows. I definitely exercised my etiquette and reading the conditions to even suggest it. He couldn't be any nicer about our time with him. So yeah, Christopher H. from 9/9/18, I don't know what you're talking about. I make it a point to visit the bar at any Kimpton location nowadays. I always seem to have a good time. But then again, I can only speak for myself. Parking: Street, unless you're a guest at the hotel. FYI: - Despite the hours on Yelp saying this place is open from 4-10pm, they might open earlier, as we joined in at around 11am or noon. But don't hold me to it. If there's somebody at the bar, you'll need to simply ask if it is open yet.
