In 2020 thanks to the Fiesta Bowl committee, the children's playground was upgraded to the cute big metal animal structures that it is now. Kids can climb and slide inside an owl, rabbit and fox. They can dig in the covered white sand pit, crawl along the spiderweb ropes, and run and climb up the rock wall. It's a cute, bright area, and my kids get excited to go to "the animal park" every time we're Downtown. I've witnessed many cool events in this park from film crews, yoga groups, protest marches, festivals and concerts. Events and festivals for the Super bowl and NCAA final four have been held here. There's plenty of space to lie around to relax or set up for a picnic. Nearby, there is the Japanse Friendship Garden and lots of coffee and restaurants. We were here earlier today for our little one to enjoy the park and run around. The playground here is very playful with giant structures to climb and around. There was also a small rock climbing wall for bigger kids to enjoy. There is plenty of parking, everyone keeps to themselves, and a doggy park not too far away! I highly recommend for everyone looking for a nice spot to relax and chill.

There are also some BBQ grills which were being used while we were here for a birthday party going on. As for a little bit of history, this park was first built in 1960! That's old for AZ standards. It was then renovated in 2009. The park is named after an influential agriculturist EW Hudson. There's also a scouting activity area that looked interesting and seems to be for scouting troops to have campfires and outdoor activities. Technically there's also a hummingbird garden but unless you parked in a specific spot or know where to look, you'd miss it as its small and tucked in a far corner. While small, it is nice (aside from the pile of cigarette butts some jrrk left) with some nice plants, a short walking path, and a water feature. It has a lot of desert plants but I was surprised not to see more spring flowers this time of year. The park is nice and the water seemed clean and not smelly, but I wish we had more areas of denser vegetation like the hummingbird area to walk around in. It does seem pretty well kept up and I noticed several newer desert willows growing. At 8 am on a spring Sunday, it was busy with people walking, fishing, at the playground, and doing tai Chi, but parking wasn't an issue.

They have plenty of trash receptacles, lots of shade trees and benches for watching the water or the birds. My recommendation of Cesar Chavez Park may sound like a commercial, but I wholeheartedly think it is an underutilized place. Sure, I encounter many families enjoying the picnic areas, kids on the playground area, some fishing going on... but mainly on weekends. This place beets the mall anytime for wiling the time away, enjoying some fresh air or just contemplating Mother Nature at its best as structured by man. It's amazing what this park has to offer, everything one can imagine or want and hard to think so much is here in a park like Ball Field; Basketball Court; Dog Park; Drinking Fountains; Grill/Picnic Area; Playground; Racquetball Court; Recreation/Community Center; Restrooms; Shade Structures; Skate Park; Soccer Field; Tennis Court; Urban Fishing; Volleyball Court; and Lake. This is one of the best local parks, recreation and cultural facilities, and uses of open spaces in Phoenix. We are so happy that we happened to be just a few minutes' drive from it.

AND, there's a nice cement path around the entire park and fields - seems like the ultimate spot to teach the kids to ride a bike. Love this place! For locals and people living in the area, it's definitely frequented for fishing, using the playground, playing soccer or sports, and taking a nice walk. It's a clean and well maintained park. When the weather is nice, this is a great place to take a walk at sunset, around the small lake. I've seen some really nice skies and colors from the park. People are there year round fishing and there's a big playground area with a large climbing tower & splash pad towers at the north end of the park. Spread throughout that area are picnic ramadas w/ grills that are popular on the weekend. We walk our pups around when it's cooler outside. Summer months we don't usually walk over, even though we live close by, across the street. It's just too hot, even at night. Overall, it's a great park area and I look forward to when we come back regularly for our evening walks.
