Man, they are SERIOUS about closing on time. Lol ! The first time I tried to come I didn't look up their hours and showed up at 3:03pm on a Sat. They closed at 3pm and all was dark ! The second time I came was during the week; they have a tiny bit longer hours... until 5pm. The store is very small, but well organized. The right side of the store is a wall of refrigeration units with prepared foods. Soups, main courses, etc. I had heard good things about their lasagna since it does not use ricotta. Instead, it is made with a bechamel sauce and mozzarella. They had 3 sizes : single serving $9, small $20, and large $35. I picked the small and they said it would serve 2-3 people. I also got a single serving chicken parmesean ($9). It's only the chicken with sauce and cheese, no pasta. I made some pasta at home to go with it when I served it. Both items were very good ! I purchased some Jersey Gravy pasta sauce but have not tried it yet. On an impulse buy, I bought some freshly made foccacia bread. It was very dense and had good flavor. Finally, and the main reason I came there, was to buy M&G olive oil ($35). My husband and I really liked the prepared meals, so we'll be back. read more

I learned about this place from an Instagram giveaway I won. Covid-19: I believe you can order and pay online. I had to go in to get my gift card though, so I just picked out my stuff there. I've noticed an increasing trend where businesses think they don't need to wear a mask if they aren't in an area customers can get to. They would put on a mask while checking you out, but the people in the back (which is just a couple of feet further away through an open door), didn't wear masks. Now for the food. They offer pre-made meals that are frozen and ready to go for you. It's mostly Italian. They also have some sides that are fresh and need to be eaten within a week. Everything comes packaged with reheating instructions. They have meal deals which come with an entree, side salad, and bread for $20. The entree changes daily. I got one of these with chicken scampi, artichoke salad, and foccacia. I also got a small chicken rustica, single serve stuffed shells, stuffed mushroom, and arancini. Most things were very good. The sides (stuffed mushroom and arancini) were our favorite things. They were so flavorful. I also really liked the chicken rustica dish. The sauce was delicious. Unfortunately, the chicken was very dry and not good. Luckily, there wasn't much of it. The artichoke salad and foccacia were both pretty good. The stuffed shells may have been our favorite pasta dish. They were so cheesy and delicious. I wish they had had more marinara, but they didn't need it. The chicken scampi was not good though. The chicken here was also very dry and flavorless. The dish as a whole just didn't really have any flavor. It seemed like they forgot to put the sauce on. Overall, this is a great option for easy meals. I'm not sure how often we'll be back because we don't really eat many carbs on a regular basis, but if you love Italian, it's worth checking them out. read more

My son and his wife were bringing home their new baby and I wanted them to have a warm, comforting dinner ready for them. I was staying at an AirBnb and didn't have access to a kitchen. I found DeSarnos on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try. I ordered them the family meal deal - it was large, it probably could have fed the tired couple and all four grandparents, but I wanted them to have leftovers. It was around $60, not bad to feed 6 I ordered the lasagna and got the mozzarella and salami salad and garlic green beans. It also came with a tossed salad and small loaf of focaccia. The happy couple absolutely loved it! Each of them told me three times how good it was. They were excited to have leftovers. While DeSarnos doesn't have a gigantic menu, there are definitely enough choices to satisfy everyone. Most of the meals are frozen - you pick them up from the large freezers along the wall. The instructions say to defrost - I wonder if you can cook from frozen, I'd have to ask. The salads are fresh in a deli case by the register. There are several dessert options that looked awesome. DeSarnos isn't very far from the kid's home. I hope they take advantage of it and give themselves a much deserved break from cooking. read more

My husband and I attended a cooking class at Desarno's last night and had a fantastic experience! Kit & Karen (the owners) are both knowledgeable and engaging. We made delicious, authentic Italian dishes using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Guido Lombardi (owner of Impero Wine Distributors) was also present suggesting and sharing wines that perfectly complemented the dishes we prepared. It added a wonderful touch to the evening. The market itself has an amazing selection of take and bake options, perfect for a gourmet meal at home. They have daily/weekly meal deals, as well. Whether you're looking to improve your cooking skills or just enjoy a fun evening, I highly recommend their classes and all of their take and bake options!! Yesssssssssssssssssssssss! I tried the daily special for the hubs & my mini. We opted for stuffed shells with broccoli/alfredo. The Italian bread was delicious and has quickly become a family favorite. We enjoyed the clearly fresh made sides like artichoke salad, lemon orzo & white bean salad - all of which were amazing. Seriously, no pre-made/soggy pre-cut tomatoes here. I am honestly most disappointed in myself for waiting so long to try this place. (Ricotta cookies were tasty too). For anyone needing a good, solid Italian fix and some dense, hearty/crusty Italian bread to lather up with butter - this is your place. This pains me because I've loved DeSarno's food in the past. However, my husband picked up chicken Marsala for a dinner party and what we got is definitely NOT chicken Marsala. I called to ask and the response was "that's how we make our Marsala." I've bought Marsala before at DeSarno's and it was brown in color with lots of mushrooms. So I gave it a try. It was ok--but it wasn't Marsala. More like chicken covered in white cream sauce. If you're looking for savory Marsala, this shouldn't be your choice. read more

I bought 4 frozen dinners recently at DeSarnos. The first one I ate was the Chicken Marsala. I baked it for 30 minutes at 350° per the instructions and let me tell you this was absolutely delicious! The breast was very tender, and the sauce was so yummy. The 2nd meal I tried was the Creamy Bacon Mushroom Thyme Chicken. Photo below. I admit I didn't read the whole description because usually when I see the words bacon and mushrooms & chicken, I need not go further. But this was a bone-in thigh which took me a bit by surprise. It was good, don't get me wrong, but had I known that in advance I probably wouldn't have bought it. I'm not big on thighs or bones. The label did specify it was a thigh, so my fault for not reading. Although I am not sure whether I should've assumed it was bone-in which is not specified. A boneless thigh would've suited my personal taste better. The sauce was absolutely incredible tasting, but it did take mine about 15 more than the recommended cook time. Again, this is my personal preference. The taste overall was delicious. read more

I have been a customer since the first week they opened and I love this place! The products they sell are excellent and I find it very convenient to stop in and buy a home made dinner all ready to go! I am also a huge fan of their lunch items -- I love the soups, salads and focaccia. The pre-prepared meals on the menu include pasta and meat dishes, fish, chicken pot pie and quiches. Everything tastes like it's homemade, and I love their selection of olive oils and wines. They even sell cute little dishes and cookbooks. Picked up the Wednesday special because I'm a huge eggplant Parmesan fan but was really disappointed. The dish had so little flavor! I never would have guessed it contained eggplant at all. So if you have not been by DeSarno's in Piper Glen next to Trader Joe's, seriously, you all are missing out. They make pre-made meals that are either refrigerated or frozen for later use. Their motto? "Our kitchen, our mess - to your table, no stress!" I am telling you I have absolutely loved everything I've ever purchased here, from the baked ziti to the Chicken Parmesan, the tomato and cucumber salad and garlic green beans to the desserts (OMG the cannolis are to die for), and the sauces (hello, Bolognese) to the chicken pot pies, and all the gorgeous things I haven't tried yet (Arancinis and stuffed peppers -you're next!), you won't go wrong with any of the wide variety of choices they offer. DeSarno's Ready made frozen eggplant parmigiana, single serve. This is my first visit and I was very surprised at how reasonable the prices are. As a single, being able to have homemade meals like this for $7-8 is terrific. Then, to top it off, it was delicious! Their sauce is the NY style that I prefer: more orange-colored, not acidic and not very chunky. The eggplant was lightly breaded so you do get the flavor of eggplant, and just the right amount of cheese. The lady that I spoke to was BEYOND helpful!! She was so sweet and took the time to explain in detail all of my questions! I've been walking past this place going to TJ for about a year and I finally decided to stop in. So glad I did! The store is super clean with freezer and refrigerated cases of delicious ready to go meals. I had help from the lady working & decided on the chicken enchiladas. SO GOOD! I got the small size and it was enough for my husband and I. I highly recommend the large size for 3 adults and up. You could possibly feed 2 adults and a child on the small. I paired it with a salad. I also tried the cannoli and it was seriously the best I've ever had! I'm so glad I finally stopped in. I will be grabbing something from here at least once a week or two. Tried the Friday special last night after reading the great reviews for this place. What a let down. Bland, no taste, chicken sauce was blah, brussel sprouts were the worst I have ever tried to eat (I say that because neither my wife nor I could get them down -dry, overcooked and generally horrible. Orzo had no real taste!! Bread was okay and the calzone was actually the best thing in the meal. Needless to say will never waste my time or money there again. UGH! If you haven't stopped into DeSarno's to check it out, you should run there right now. It's legit, old school Italian. Their house made ring sausage is fabulous!! Fine grind, delicious flavor, no weird mystery pieces like you get at some other places. The cheese and parsley one is the bomb. While you're there, get some arancini. They are always spectacular. And I know how much work goes into making them, so I always appreciate having some that I didn't have to make myself. You can find mouth watering Saint Joseph's Day pastries (sorry, you've already missed that, but don't miss it again next year!). They've got quality specialty pastas that are hard to find elsewhere. And the meaty bread? Ridiculously delicious. It reminds me of what my grandmother used to make. They are definitely worth a visit. Every chance you get. Second year in a row we used Desarno's catering for our office holiday party - and once again the food was absolutely perfect and so delicious!!!We had the Chicken Marsala, Roasted Vegetable Lasagna Roll Ups, with sides of Lemon Orzo, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Tomato Cucumber Salad - and plenty of their yummy homemade focaccia bread for everyone. This was our second try of dinners we weren't that impressed by the first set of dinners but wanted to give them another opportunity. This time I purchased the Asian Steak which had a good flavor but very chewy, the chicken Parmesan was dry and needed more sauce, the pea soup was thick.
