With Thanksgiving right around the corner, my wife and I decided it was the perfect time to place our annual pie order from one of our favorite Amish-based spots: Der Dutchman. When we pulled into the parking lot, it was clear everyone else had the same idea--place was buzzing with holiday energy. Since we were already there (and since homemade comfort food had been calling my name all morning), we figured we'd sit down for lunch first. Because of the holiday rush, the regular menu wasn't available, so the buffet was the only dine-in option. Honestly? No complaints here. We were seated in the main dining room, close to the buffet--dangerously convenient. There are three buffet stations: the big salad bar in the middle and the hot lines on either side. The salad bar was simple but fresh, with finely chopped lettuce, plenty of dressings, and all the toppings you could want. But let's talk about the hot line because this is where Der Dutchman shines. Fried chicken that's crispy, juicy, and everything comfort food should be. Chicken and noodles that tasted like something grandma would make on a cold day. Honey ham and shredded roast beef that were both tender and flavorful. And of course--the true Midwest essentials--mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green beans. The kind of plate that warms you up before you even take a bite. The buffet is all-you-care-to-eat, and trust me, I cared to eat plenty. My wife and I both kept it simple with water and lemon, and our waitress didn't miss a beat--friendly, efficient, and on top of everything even with the crowd. We left full, happy, and ready to tackle the next mission: pie pickup. And naturally, you can't walk through the Der Dutchman bakery without something extra catching your eye, so a box of donuts came home with us too. Zero regrets. Ventured out to Der Dutchman for the breakfast buffet. Couldn't believe how big this place was! It was run very smoothly. Didn't have to wait to be sat and the server came pretty promptly. We enjoy dining at Der Dutchman and particularly the broasted chicken and salad bar. The broasted chicken is among the best chicken I've tasted. The salad bar has a very wide selection of salad toppings and salads other than lettuce such as potato, macaroni, and three bean to name a few. All are pretty good. The service is friendly and prompt. For a restaurant that also is a buffet and Family style it doesn't feel that way at our table. Der Dutchman bakes and serves their own breads and rolls. I don't live in Ohio anymore, but always get excited to go to Der Dutchman. The quality of the food hasn't changed in my opinion, and in fact the number of offerings on the buffet have increased. I especially love their potato salad and pickled eggs, and who can go wrong with mashed potatoes, noodles and crispy chicken. Comfort food at its finest. The food 'used' to be absolutely delicious! New mgmt. took over a few years ago or so, and the last time I was there, the food was horrible. I ordered turkey and vegetable sides. The turkey looked liked pulled turkey and it was yellow. Yes, it was yellow. It was so dry that I could not eat it. The side dishes weren't good. I haven't been back. We sampled a bit of lunch too: delicious fried chicken, but instant-tasting mashed potatoes and canned green beans. Established in 1969, Der Dutchman is an Amish Kitchen featuring a buffet "All you can eat". The buffet is extensive and costs $18.99. Chicken, ham, beef, mashed potatoes, stuffing and assorted vegetables and salads are available.. Well I am not a fan of "All you can eat" dining experiences nor am I a fan of buffets. So you might ask, What are you doing at Der Dutchman? Simply put, that is where the client wanted to go. Fortunately, you can choose from the dinner menu. I choose the chicken breasts which came with Mac & Cheese, and green beans ($13.75). There were other options to choose from. I can not complain about the food other than nothing was special about it. For this meal I would give it a 3 Star rating. I also had the iced tea with refills ($3.29). The star of the meal was the rhubarb pie. The crust was perfect and the rhubarb pie also contained sweet black raspberries which offset the tart rhubarb. I would return for the rhubarb pie. You see, the Dutchman has a separate bakery and it is wonderful. 4 Stars for the bakery. The third part of Der Dutchman is devoted to Carlisle Gifts which I did not explore. read more

Service was good. Waitress was pleasant. The food, however, was a different story. We ordered the broasted chicken dinner. The chicken was over done. The stuffing was bland. The coleslaw was good. Although I haven't had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant yet (which I will, at which point I'll amend this review), I CAN say that I've enjoyed their donuts! A friend dropped off 6 assorted donuts and so far, I've had the creme-filled Long John and the apple fritter. Both were absolutely scrumptious! The apple fritter had the perfect texture and aftertaste, which is huge because that's among my favorites. The cream in the Long John tasted as fresh as the donut. Considering the time of the afternoon that it was brought to me, I was surprised, because usually anything from a bakery at a time other than morning or noon has that "my final lap - eat me now" taste and "donsity" (donut density). I have eaten at many Amish restaurants and was overall disappointed with this one.. First of all, it's cavernous and very clean with a corporate sterility to it. It's almost like going into a dining room at an assisted living facility. Service is good, but in a down the line robotic way. Though they have a menu, I chose the buffet. While the lunch buffet seems expansive at first glance, there is not all that much variety, particularly on the salad bar. The hot bar contains many of the foods you might expect, but every dish I tried was exceedingly bland almost to the point of being tasteless. The buffet is very expensive for what you get. Drinks and pie are separately charged unlike most Amish buffets I've been to. And they jack you up higher for a slice of "seasonal" pie. Lunch could easily set you back 35 dollars plus! In my opinion, it's not worth going out of your way to eat here. Find a place that offers more value and more flavor. read more

We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here- and it just blew people out of the water! We had a lot of out of towners for our wedding who came in for our wedding, and now they want to come back for Der Dutchman. Very homecooked delicious food. The servers are always friendly and most of my experiences have been with the buffet- this was buffet style as well. I've been coming to Der Dutchman for years. Do you want home cooked comfort food and plenty of selection? Then this is the place for you! We came here on a Saturday evening around 5:00 and waited for a solid 45 minutes before being seated. We had a party of 6. Our waitress was Hannah and she was fantastic. Very attentive. Everyone in the group chose the dinner buffet. I apologize for not getting any pictures. I hit the ground running once we were able to start eating. A few of my favorites from the dinner buffet included: mashed potatoes, noodles, fried chicken, mac & cheese, and the pie surprise. They also bring yeast rolls (white, wheat, or a variety of your choice) once you are seated. The pie surprise is literally just that...a surprise of whatever pie is available. Pro-tip: if you go to the breakfast buffet (served Mon-Sat until 11:00), and you time it just right, you could get the breakfast AND the lunch buffet at the same visit. read more

Used to live out this way and have been many times, but not lately. Today we went for the breakfast buffet, which I don't think I'd ever had (I've done the dinner one.) Mom got mush, off the menu, and it was fresher/hotter/softer inside/crispier outside than the mush on the buffet, as you might expect. Not many places serve it anymore. Supposedly they sell it ready to cook in the bakery, but we didn't see it. She liked it, and the sausage links she got (which were also better than the ones on the buffet.) I liked the buffet. All the standard breakfast items, plus the mush and biscuits and gravy. Plus a ton of different fresh fruit, and a couple of dessert items, an apple crisp (very good) and a "fruit slush" which is basically frozen fruit salad and not my thing. Food good all in all, though not stellar. Nice variety on the menu, and the buffet. Prices are a little high, but really not bad, for the quantity and quality. Service was good at the table, though slow, and we were slow to be seated; they are definitely shorthanded. Worth a visit. Definitely check out the bakery- so much good stuff. I've heard such amazing things about Der Dutchman and thought it was about time I tried it. There was an hour and 15 minute wait, which didn't upset me, as I had time to walk through their gift shoppe and bakery. Both were enough to pass the wait time quickly. My friend bought three pies because she couldn't decide. I wanted pastries but it was late in the day and they were pretty much sold of so I settled for cupcakes. They were quite good. Our waiter, Colton was great and very attentive. He suggested first timers should try the buffet. I figured, why not, it states it has everything on it that the menu has other than burgers and a few other items. I don't full up on the salad bar but it certainly was a nice plentifully stocked bar. The buffet itself was a major disappointment. It didn't have turkey. The ham was blah, the roast beef was ok. The broasted chicken was good and the sides were nothing worth talking about. I tried the mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, corn, noodles, all just ok. And the desserts were gross looking They bring rolls to the table in hopes you fill up on them. Service was great. Had been wanting to write a review for a while now about our experience but had not had the chance to. My boyfriend and I came here with his grandma for dinner on a weekday a couple of months ago. As soon as we arrived we were seated and showed to the plates, food, etc. We began eating, server was attentive and would come and go but the "uncomfortable" situation happened when my boyfriend had gone up with his grandma for food the second time. He mentioned two servers were behind the food whispering and laughing while watching both of them. He did not know why or if they were doing something wrong. We quickly finished our dinner and made our way to the front of the restaurant to pay. His grandma mentioned that she loved this place and was happy that we had finally had a chance to try it, she mentioned they had an amazing pie selection too. As soon as the "store manager" heard this she quickly said "the bakery is closed!" with an atitude. We never said we were going to order from the bakery so this caught us off guard. We paid our bill and left. Food was okay, nothing fancy or new. We are very unhappy about our experience here and will not be coming back. read more

What's a visit to Ohio without going to the Der? Food is excellent, I buy from the menu and had a BL with no T or mayo. Their own baked sourdough bread! Six thick slices of bacon! And of course we hit the bakery and Carlisle Gifts. Besides some gifts, we purchased 3 dozen cookies, a loaf of sourdough and a pound of their butter to bring on the flight home. I had to buy an athletic bag for a carry on for these goodies and they made it home with no problems. TSA wanted to keep the butter but I begged and they grinned and put it back in the bag. Didn't get photos of the snickerdoodles or chocolate crinkles, but they were so good! The Amish know how to bake! read more

As many times as I have been to Der Dutchman, I had never actually tried the coffee shop. Took the chance to grab some donuts and some lattes and a Whoopie pie. The whoppie pies are delicious. They taste just like an old Susie-Q, if you remember those. Very good. The long John donuts are the beat I've ever found anywhere. I hate when donut shops put icing in them. Ew. The Der puts cream inside. It's delicious. The maple is my favorite. The chocolate is a close second. They now have peanut butter cream too. It was ok. The lattes. Wow. My wife's family has been coming here for many years, but I never had been till they re-opened back up after the pandemic induced shut down around fall of 2020. When we were there in 2020, the place was empty and they were just working out their pandemic protocols and social distancing practices. (Boy I hope to stop using those terms forever soon! There was nobody there, then yet the salad bar/buffet was still open. I didn't think it looked well take care of enough to try it. Today I stopped by (Dec 2021) and I could see the place was busy. I'd say the place was at about 60% capacity, not bad for a Tuesday evening early (5pm). They were utilizing the entire restaurant (huge seating capacity, but still intelligently spacing people out. Some restaurants have been really dumb in this regard with small crowds and limited staff. I took a quick look at the buffet and salad bar, it was busy, and very well kept up and restocked. I was seated and decided to order the 2 piece dark broasted chiken dinner. The waitress pointed out that the buffet was only 1 dollar more. (I had noted on the menu that take home boxes were not available for buffet patrons. That salad bar really looked good and I was in the mood for a salad. I explained to the waitress that I was a weight loss surgery patient and buffets are usually a bad value for me. Its possible I could have to stop eating after just a few bites! I told her I would have the buffet if I could have a carry out box and that I would only be able to fill one plate and a salad plate. She agreed and let me order the buffet. She said ok and off I went. She checked in with me frequently, kept my drink refills coming and anything else I needed. Knowing their pies are good, I ordered two pieces to go. Unlike my recent experiences in Columbus restaurants lately, everyone here seemed happy to be working here and working hard! After words I did a little shopping, hoping to find some Christmas presents in their gift shop. My wife wasn't with me so I knew I could look around and get out quickly. It may seem sexist and at my age, I don't care, but if my wife was with me, this is an hour ordeal! If my review included the parking lot, I may have reduced it to 4 stars. The parking lot needs more lighting and the spots need re-painted. The handicap parking signs are very old and lost their reflectivity. I couldn't find them so I ended up walking a little further. Impromptu visit to Der Dutchman. This place is lovely. I love the ambiance and the service and food. It was cold Saturday and comfy food was just the ticket. This place is always busy so plan on a wait. BUT I've not waited longer than 20 minutes. We were greeted by Melissa. Such a nice server. My hubs had the buffet. The salad bar is huge. Lots of varieties to make a delicious salad. All of the ingredients looked fresh! He had then roasted chicken potatoes and green beans. Food warm and delicious. My SIL had the buffet and had the roast beef. I'm not a fan but is was very flavorful and delicious!! I had the chicken tenders. Really that meal is e piggy to share. Tenders were huge and the breading was light and yummy. I had fries and fresh fruit which included cantaloupe, muskmelon, strawberries, pineapple, and grapes. All fresh and delicious! You can order from the menu or have the buffet. Either way is a win-win Good value for the price. Had we not been stuffed we would have opted for pie!! For probably 20 years or more, we stop at Der Dutchman for donuts on our way out of Ohio back home to Colorado! Our 3 boys loved the chance to choose their favorite donut! Even though our boys have grown and flown, we still stop in for our traditional treat. The best donuts! My favorite is the maple frosting with custard filling!
