Five Star Dive Bar. The variety of burgers is amazing. They came with adorable stamps on the buns, and the bartender even split our burgers for us when we told her we were sharing. My husband and I are trying to work our way through their menu. Onion rings are fabulous, fries were great for sharing, and the mac and cheese portion was too much for a single person to finish. Drinks are inexpensive and cold. Only complaints: Ladies room is not the best, but functional and they serve Pepsi instead of coca-cola products. Also, plenty parking in the back. I live in the area and I've been riding past this bar for years telling myself that one day I would stop inside. I was bored after a late shift last night and finally decided to stop inside around a 11pm for a drink. It happened to be karaoke night which I thought was cool. There were about 12 other ppl inside. The kitchen was closed by the time I got there so I didn't get to try any food. The drink prices are pretty much average but a little high for my liking. I got two shots of Jim Beam which were 6.75 each, but I typically go to bars where they would be about 4-5 dollars each, so I definitely wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for good drink prices. The bartender, Taylor seemed nice enough at first, very personable. But, when she went to give me my change, she sat it down on the counter instead of placing it in my open hand, even though I placed the bill directly in her hand when I gave it to her. This may not be a big deal to some but it's very rude and definitely a deal breaker for me. read more

My husband and I stopped in for the first time and probably our last unfortunately. The food was good except all the flies. Took a little longer than expected but was a little busy I guess. The bartender/server was super rude. My husband ordered a loose cannon after about 10 minutes she comes back with an attitude to let us know they are out. This bar is always packed with UMBC students and your local Arbutians. If you're not from the area, you might feel a little out of place when you first walk in, but have no fear, the staff is very welcoming. You really can't go wrong with the food here. They have a variety of flavors for their wings, and the mozzarella sticks are extra stretchy (see photos). I also hear that the burgers are the best in town. I found out about this place via Yelp from one of my connections. I decided to drop in on a Sunday evening to check It out for a drink. This establishment is a your average run in the mill neighborhood bar that regulars attend. I was greeted upon arrival by the bartender; his disposition was friendly (you all should know how I feel about customer service by now) be nailed It. He brought out a menu and started making my signature drink. The Cosmopolitan was delicious and well made. The menu seemed a bit extensive for a neighborhood bar but I ended up ordering wings and fries; fries were hand cut and fresh (love It). I originally ordered the crab dip but I sent It back, It didn't look appetizing, thankfully the bartender wasn't offended by my gesture. Apparently this spot is known for "musical bingo", this was hands down the best part of checking this place out. The DJ/ game host had custom bingo cards for the game and divided the games into genres of music and years. By the look of the crowd, people come just for game and the drinks. The Cons of the restaurant One of the ladies room had 2 toilets that weren't separated, and one sink. I felt super uncomfortable using the restroom knowing that someone could walk in on me at any second to go as well without privacy. The other ladies room was located behind the bar and it was freezing in there. In my opinion those were the only complaints that I can think of with this place. For all my Retrievers at UMBC, and others around their area, this place is worth going to for the cheap appetizers and wings. The food, especially the burgers, are very good, and they have good drink deals during happy hours. The one thing that I do not enjoy is the slow service can make you a little hangry, so advise you to go on a patient night when you're trying to throw a few back and have a chill night. Literally the worst service we've experienced. Waitress/bartender completely forgot about us, and after waiting 15 minutes, my husband went to look for her and she was nowhere to be found. This was my first time here, I came for the karaoke. (I know the host) upon entering I noticed the warm red on the wall and dark wood. It felt cosy. There is even a couch in the corner. Bar section is separate from the low tables but not in a detached way. Good first impression. The waitress was super friendly and accommodating. (i tend to be picky) I got the cheese steak and a tequila Caesar salad. Yummy! Huge cheese steak sub. The bf got a pulled pork sandwich and fries. He seemed very happy. (it only lasted a few minutes before it was devoured) :) we will come back! It is also family friendly and plan to bring my son another night to sing a song. Stopped in for lunch on a whim. The menu surprised us with the variety of burgers. Each of us got a different burger. Mine was the HoneyGoat. It was cooked a perfect medium. This was a delicious burger. Definitely in my top five worldwide. The patty was thick. The Honey perfectly balanced the pickled peppers. The fries are the good ol Baltimore fries. The rest of the menu had some home town favorites. I wasn't sure what we were getting when we first walked in but love to try new places. I will be returning to this restaurant more often! I did not know what to expect when I came here. The server told us right off the bat the cook was alone in the kitchen so to take that into consideration when ordering. It did not matter. The fries are incredible. I had a shrimp burger, and have never had anything like it before. Imagine a crab cake, but made of shrimp, drowned in red pepper snap sauce. It was shocking. My wife had a caprese burger and said the pesto was incredible. The burger menu is impressive. The beer selection is a little lacking in darker beers, but that was way outweighed by how incredible the food was. This place has me shooketh. read more

I was told the Owner Andy DePaola spends most of his time in the kitchen, and he ain't messing around when it comes to his food! Came for a quick burger and ended up learning all about Arbutus. This place is a part of the towns history. Clientele definitely local and colorful to boot. Food was excellent. Service was excellent. I would recommend the mushroom/Swiss burger and the UMBC Retriever burger (topped with crab, yum!). Coleslaw is house made, totally delicious. DePaola's is a fun place to go in Arbutus, they always have specials and events going on like trivia or music bingo. It's a good place for UMBC students like myself to go get happy hour deals with friends. It is of course small and not very fancy, as can be expected. You seat yourself when you arrive. We were in the neighborhood for a book signing of James Zimmerman's "Growing up Meathead". Afterwards a groups of friends and the author, Jim, went looking for something to eat and hopefully a beer. Most places, you order, sit, eat pizza and we're closing. Then we found DePaola's Pub and Grill, just down the street. Menu looked like they specialized in Burgers and pub nosh Our host immediately accommodated our group moving tables and making our space a bit private. Looked promising We were happy to sit together, have a meal and a beer. DePaola's was the most pleasant dinning experience, I've had in years!!! The apps were quick and fantastic, especially the tater tots with crab dip in top. Our amazing waitress, I'm so sorry to have forgotten her name, had the chef do chili dogs for two guest. It wasn't on the menu. All 9 friends raved about their meals, our waitress, and good time with the neighborhood locals. Go to DePaola's Bar and Grill!!!!! This is UMBC's closest thing to a college bar. You'll often find students catching the big game over a few pitchers. I love this place, but you have to know what to expect: While many students meet up here, there are also usually lots if older townees. Service takes a very long time especially when you order food. I have to deduct 2 stars after my last visit. I eat and drink here VERY frequently. At least 2-3 times a month. Sometimes once a week in the winter time. I LOVE their burgers, hand cut fries, fried cheese, and chicken tenders. Actually, all the food is great and the chef's are super nice. Once, they brought me out some homemade donuts. The service here, though, is SO bad. The waitresses always look zoned out; I know for a fact that they're drinking behind the bar, so maybe that's the explanation. I grew up in food service and drinking excessively during work, even behind a bar, is not right. So these tipsy waitresses and bartenders will chat the night away with people at the bar, ignoring the tables and sometimes even the opposite end of the bar. I sat down and waited 20 minutes in a half empty bar before I had to get up, walk to the bar, flag down a bartender and get a menu, two waters, and 2 beers. Unacceptable, especially considering there was a guy literally PASSED OUT DRUNK at the bar, which is illegal and not a good look. I guess he had no problems being served. I really like this place, and it's close to home, but the service is pretty unbearable. I hope the owner, who is a great guy, sees this and rectifies these issues or I can see me and my family finding a different local spot soon. read more

My husband and I get take out once every few months from here, because the burgers are really good. Today, my sister came in town so we decided to get lunch here with her. We sat down and it took the waitress 15 minutes to come to our table. "You haven't been helped yet?," she asked us as she came by, but we ordered and thought that it must have been a busy day there... Two hours later, we were still waiting on our food. We asked many times, each time getting the answers: - "We are busy. They are up next." - "They're coming out! I'll go back and check again." - "It isn't out yet? I thought you were up next, let me go and check." We asked for the food to be boxed to go, because of the delay. She told us that we could do that, and she was having it done because the food was ready. Twenty minutes later, there was still no food. I asked the bartender if she could check the status. She said they were "boxing it up." I want to add that the other patrons around us had their food, including people that came in much later than us. A group of regulars were annoyed with us that we kept asking about it, but they came in at least an hour after us and had their food. Finally, after 15 additional minutes of telling us that they were boxing up the food, I told the waitress we were leaving. We left without any food. Not once did any of the staff apologize for the delay, or act even semi-interested that we had been waiting so long. It's very disappointing, because like I said before, the burgers are good. But, the service is awful! We won't be going back..... read more

For Arbutus the food is great. Not many options around for flavorful food. Burgers are great and served with delicious fries at a great price! Reason for the 3 star...the staff is okay, most of the bartender's are not friendly at all. Only found one that is always friendly no matter what day I go in or call an order in, her name is Tina. Another issue is getting the wings cooked well, they tend to be a little gooey. So we order boneless now and they are very good. Another negative on my most recent visit is lack of COVID precautions. No masks on ANY of the staff and no cleaning of bar or areas after people leave. I was glad I took my food to go but was very concerned about it and removed it all from packaging to ensure we cut as many germs as possible. It was a little disappointing to see the lack of effort, so we will not be ordering again for a while. Again, food is very good for carry out but I have tried on many occasions to take friends there to "hang" and have some drinks but it was not a comfortable atmosphere for all people. The need to work on being more welcoming to all people, especially being in a great college area. read more

Decent local spot. Solid bar food. Fair priced macro beer selection. We go for the burgers and fries. The new burger menu is a welcome addition. Flavors are all nice, but burgers are almost always over cooked. For medium, order med rare or rare. But for a $10 burger I can't be all that picky. Service has improved steadily over the last few years. Order the fries extra crispy. They do fries right. Triple smoke burger was supposed to come with a garlic aioli. It came with a big ole scoop of minced garlic instead. If it came with an actual aioli and was cooked perfectly this burger could stand up there with the best burgers in Baltimore. DePaola's is my place to go on a weekend to have a few drinks with friends. They have a friendly, attentive staff there and I always have a good time when I am there. They really pride themselves on their array of hamburgers and I can see why. I should have taken a picture of my cheeseburger, because it was really good and hit the spot.
