I left here thinking I was going to have to spend tons of money or lose my teeth. Not okay. My wife and I are senior citizens and retired professionals. I had my last crown placed today by Dr. Chen. Prior to this visit, I learned a great deal about teeth and their care. My wife was persistent with me, and I finally gave in to getting dental insurance. After she retired, we lost Delta Dental, which is the best there is. We needed dental insurance, so we finally got it. This was a little over two years ago. Our professional planner for Medicare and Social Security helped us get the best choice for our needs. People need to take care of their teeth. I have read several reviews that remind me of me. My point of view was altered by a prejudice known as money. These other folks suffer from the same ailment. Once I learned that the only way to prevent getting dentures or implants is to allow a caring and knowledgeable professional to assist you in understanding how to care for your teeth and to understand the best options for the future of your mouth. My wife was the first to repair her old and previously filled teeth with professionally and *computer technologically built crowns. We paid for the best ones. No, they were not cheap. Consider the alternative -- dentures or implants. Does anyone care to guess what a mouth full of implants would cost? How about the "convenience" of dentures? No root canals for her. No way. She flossed and brushed regularly for most of her life, even before electric toothbrushes. Thus, the only damaged teeth were the ones that dentists of the 1960s and 1970s had filled with some kind of metal that eventually deteriorated. Dr. Chen did an excellent job with each of the crowns my wife needed, and it became readily obvious that she truly cared about my wife's teeth. As for me. I was blessed with hard teeth. I was NOT a regular "brusher" or even an occasional "flosser." Had I been cursed with crappy teeth, I would have been a lot worse off than I am. Fortunately, I did care for my mouth every morning prior to heading off to work. I also had professional cleanings twice a year though good dental insurance. I got a couple of good crowns 6 or 7 years ago from previous dentist. I have a mouth full of metal fillings from years past, and some of those needed to be replaced with crowns. Let's talk about cleaning. Yes, dental insurance allows two "routine" cleanings per year. If you have gum separation that exceeds 4s, a "routine" cleaning will not do. Even if it "feels good to do it," it will not help one bit. I had to live with the expensive deeper cleaning because I had 4s and 5s in my mouth. Good news. Dr. Chen and her staff helped me to understand how to help move the gums into a healthier state by better care for my teeth. Recently, per Dr. Chen's advice, we both got waterpiks from Amazon. Why am I writing all of this? Because Dr. Chen truly cares. Due to a family history of dentists, great and focused schooling, a true and passionate dedication to her trade, she really understands the human mouth. She is very personable and positive as well. Her whole position on dental care revolves around "saving" you from eventual implants or dentures. I have chosen to put my money into a "savings account" (pay now instead of later) that prevents me from future expenses down the line (implants or dentures). Yes, I was a pain in the butt when immediate money was my major concern. Yes, I wanted to get the cheaper cleaning, but it would have done no good considering the shape of my mouth. *This office uses computer aided design of crowns, augmented by the use of a barrage of photographic views of the area of the mouth that needs the crown built. Those records are meticulously collected and stored in their system for future reference. Every patient is able to see a record of their care, right there in the chair. Dr. Chen explains everything clearly and precisely. Why go anywhere else? read more

My favs are Wanda, Dr. Chen and Dr. Li. I've yet to meet Dr. Pratt. All are very attentive and professional and kind. My Hygienist, whom I saw for the first time 11/6/23, Kelsey Moody, is extremely gentle, friendly, explains what she's doing and does amazing work! I hope Kelsey stays with Dentists of Mesa forever. Reading over these "1" stars shocked me. Dental care is costly, everywhere! You only get one free exchange of teeth from when you are born. If you're lucky, you get perfect teeth for a lifetime. If you're not, you get to visit the dentist regularly because of genetics, locality (water sources), amongst a host of other things. Although I did have an issue with a prior billing/insurance issue, Wanda handled it with professionalism and it was taken care of with poise. I wanted to like this office. Let me cut to the chase, Dentists of Mesa is part of a larger network of dental offices known as Pacific Dental Services that is part of multiple class action lawsuits. Save your money, save your time. Find a dental office that cares about the well-being of their dental patients. Where to start.....so the dentist answered the phone and schedule my appointment, was extremely kind and accommodating to my needs on the phone. The front office was extremely friendly and fun to chat with. Everything was going well until I sat in the dental chair and became just another victim to corporate dentistry hot garbage. You know the fear mongering, extreme sales tactics used by corporate dentistry today to make you feel like you are neglecting your dental health in order to sell you an over aggressive treatment plan that could cause you to agree to unnecessary dental work. Unfortunately there are many people who have probably fallen for this pure lack of integrity business plan. I highly recommend you find another dental office for your dental needs and doctor since I was professional enough to refuse to refer to you by name I hope you find your conscious in this post and find a new dental office that doesn't require you to be so dishonest to perform your career. If you read the reviews left for this business, most (not all) positive reviews were over 2-3 years ago. Most (not all) negative reviews were more recent. One week ago today, I visited Dentists of Mesa for an emergency exam due to extreme pain I was experiencing. The pain was so intense on one side of my mouth I was unable to pinpoint the exact tooth, or even if it was upper or lower. The whole side of my mouth and face hurt. Dr. Chen ordered and reviewed X-rays. The pictures were inconclusive, but she determined it was an upper molar that had been replaced with an implant approx. 10 years ago. She recommended I come back two days later to meet with oral surgeon so we could pull and replace the implant (with either a bridge or another implant). Since I was leaving the Mesa area last Friday (for 6 months), I was very reluctant to start a major dental procedure before departing. I was surprised when Dr. Chen said that'd be no problem - the tooth could be extracted Wednesday and replaced when I came back to Mesa next November. No, I'm not kidding. When I declined to proceed in that manner, her whole attitude toward me cooled. She appeared to be irritated that I did not want to go without a tooth for the over six months that it would be until I returned to Mesa. Even so, I asked if I could at least get something for pain control to get me back to Iowa. She refused, but prescribed an antibiotic (which you'll find in two seconds was worthless since I didn't have an infection). I visited my dentist in Iowa today. Dr. Chen had identified the wrong tooth. And she was going to have it extracted!!!!! If this isn't frightening to you, it should be. The actual pain causing tooth was a lower molar that had cracked. I will deal with it locally, start to finish. I'm not sure if Dr. Chen's misdiagnosis and improper recommendation was a result of a zeal for revenue generation or her own ineptitude. Either is unacceptable and should be enough reason for anyone reading this to stay away. read more

I went there for a deep cleaning and was told that it would cost $250 for one side and $300 for the other. I have Aetna medicare and went home and call the insurance and ask why the insurance did not provide coverage. Agent said that I had full coverage and called the dental office, who QUICKLY said they knew I had coverage. When I went in, they still charged me for nitrous, which I paid, then charged Medicare which paid. This is Medicare fraud. This dental office is an absolute scam and will try to milk as much money out of you as possible. My husband went in for a "new patient cleaning" and they insisted that he needed to get a deep cleaning. Fine whatever, then they proceeded to charge us afterwards $225! That did not sound right to me so I called my insurance and they said we should not have to pay anything at all since we get 1 free deep cleaning per year. My insurance spoke to the receptionist and found out that the dental office was using the wrong pricing chart for Cigna and was over charging. How many other people with Cigna insurance have also been over charged?! They gave me a refund of $140 for catching their mistake but they said the other $85 falls under "unspecified codes". An insurance cannot cover the costs of anything a dental office charges as "unspecified codes" and they will be out of pocket. I asked the receptionist to explain to me what these "unspecified codes" were and she told me I had to speak with the dentist. I spoke with Dr. Chen and she explained that the unspecified codes were for gum irrigation and laser treatment for the deep clean. While my husband was there, they also tried to upsell him other treatments for around $400 but he refused. My husband takes immaculate care of his teeth so the amount of things they were trying to push on him was ridiculous. My husbands experience was the second time we've been there. The first time, I made an appointment and after 45 minutes in the waiting room they told me they were running an hour and a half behind. I felt like my time was not respected at all. I usually dont leave bad reviews but here it goes.. The staff was great and everyone was friendly but I spent an hour and a half waiting to see the dentist even though I had an appointment for teeth cleaning. When the dentist finally came by, she was very nice but tried to sell me a bunch of services that were not necessary. After meeting with the dentist, I was expecting to see the dental hygienist so I can finally get mg teeth cleaned after waiting for an hour and a half only for the office assistant to inform me that the appointment I made was for "new patient appointment" (not sure what that means..). All in all, I spent an hour and a half waiting at a dentist office only to sit there and have someone try to sell me services I didnt need and left without getting my teeth cleaned because their hygienist was fully booked that day. Probably the worst dentist appointment I ever had. A dentist appointment is not supposed to be this complicated. read more

I went to this office today as a new patient for a routine cleaning. One of the dentists, Lily Chen, has a review on Cigna's website that gave me pause, and naturally that's the dentist they scheduled me with. I hoped it was a one off, but spoiler alert - it wasn't. I really wish the dental board would shut down franchise practices. I have had problem after problem after problem with them. This is the third one. They did the X-rays first, and then instead of starting the cleaning with a hygienist, Chen came in and started talking about deep cleaning/root planning right away, and she measured my gum pockets. Normally the hygienist does the measuring, then the dentist comes in at the end. I told her that I was not ready to commit to root planing right now, as I just had root planing done through a different franchised practice six months ago, and wasn't prepared to spend another $800 right away. She told me to come back and set up the appointment later on when I was ready to do so. And then made it clear that the visit was finished. I asked her if I was going to have the routine cleaning. She said no. I was taken aback and told her that I've never had a dentist refuse to do a routine cleaning to which I am entitled. She said that because I need the root planing that there is no point in doing a routine cleaning because that wouldn't be a good standard of care. I told her that I am entitled to two cleanings a year and even if it's not the deep cleaning, having my teeth professionally cleaned just feels good. She still refused to do it. I let the front desk know on my way out and they gave me blank stares, followed by a "have a nice day". Clearly, this is more about profit. There is no reason for things to be done in the order in which they were done, and there's absolutely no reason for this dentist to refuse to allow a routine cleaning to be done. I have lodged a complaint with CIGNA and they are currently investigating. I am no stranger to gum issues, and dental issues in general, and again, have never had the dentist recommend expensive procedures before the routine cleaning takes place. Much less refuse to allow a routine cleaning. I am going to copy and paste the review from another patient from January that clearly had the same experience I had. If you have a choice, stay away, unless you have good teeth and no issues, in which case you'll probably be fine. What also burns me is they did a panoramic x-ray and I'm only allowed one every three years. While the new practice (once I find one) can request it, I'm sure they prefer to do their own. This is the review from January from another patient: "Felt very pressured by Dr Chen and her office staff to agree to their recommendations for extra dental work beyond the covered exam and cleaning I was seeking. Dr Chen refused to provide me with the dental cleaning I had scheduled because I wouldn't immediately decide to agree to have her perform the extra dental work she was recommending and had to set up an another appointment with a different provider just to get my routine cleaning done as covered under my insurance plan." read more

The manager Catlin was more than amazing. She was super knowledgeable, friendly, kind and well I could not of asked for anything more. Just talking to her alone made the visit worth coming. Dr Chaffeee was also wonderful. He took the time to put my mind at ease and explained in detail on everything they were doing on my husband. I highly recommend this office. Not to mention their waiting room had drink options and television even a spot designed for children. The restrooms and equipment were cleaned to perfection. Dr. Chaffee has nursed me through 2 major procedures. His staff from front desk to dental assistants are all amazing. They have gone above and beyond to accommodate me. Even as far as running to the store after I had asked if they by chance had a stress ball to help calm me. They did not but suddenly during my procedure one magically appeared in my hand. If you are looking for a caring compassionate dentist then Dr. David Chaffee is not your dentist. His people skills leave a lot to be desired. My experience with him is that he just didn't have the humanity or cared enough to even ask how I was doing during the extractions nor did he offer any options to the extractions or any follow-up to my dental care. I called his office twice about any remaining dental procedures estimate and never received a call back. After 11 days of considerable pain from the extractions I called his office about the issue and was told they would call me back after they spoke to the dentist. Did not receive a call back. Now, three weeks post extraction, I am nearly pain free no thanks to Dr. Chaffee. I would rate him as an F- and his office staff the same. My veterinarian cared more for my dog and cat to inquire the day after their rabies shot how my pets were doing than Dr. Chaffee had for me as a human patient. read more
