I lived in the south for 4 years and when I travel back I would always stop on my travels at a Denny's to eat I love their food .I hate to say it ,but the Dennys down there will blow your mind's compared the garbage in Centereach .I was totally let down you can tell everything was frozen ,heat lamped and pre-made more often than necessary. The wait staff is friendly ,but a little slow .Dennys is supposed to be a home cooked /comfort food eatery so to taste what they cook in Centereach makes you wonder why open if your not gonna do it right. There have been times where the girl and I couldn't pick a place to eat, and we chose Denny's just because of Kathy's stellar service. We love Kathy. #teamkathy Anyway, some of these reviews are ridiculous. Listen, you gotta realize your going to Denny's in the middle of Centereech, next to a Walmart. Your not at some high end rich 5* diner in the Hamptons. Lower your expectations, this is a fast food type diner, kind of like a Applebee' or Friendlys. I absolutely love this place. It's a good 20$ for 2 meal. Im never expecting it to be the best food in the world. It's a good drunk food meet up, or a I've been up studying I'm hungry type joint. Don't order no sirloin steak or chicken parm. Stick to the basics, like nachos, chicken tenders, breakfast and burgers. I recommend those basics, and not stray too far off that route. The deserts are amazing! I love the $2-$4-$6 menu. Also love that homemade special ranch dipping sauce. It by far the thickest, creamiest, most delicious sauce I've ever had I my mouth. read more

I have given Denny's the benefit of the doubt, the first time I went there.. they forgot about me and my girlfriend.. so they gave us free meals.. second time we went there.. they messed up those free meals.. the seating is always 20 minutes yet it takes the waiter 45 to get to you. Other then that.. the food is mediocre and they never get the order right.. but it seems that they hire whoever decides to walk through the door and that is one of the downfalls.. but if you want a cheap meal and you want to have a guessing game with your other to see if its going to be right this time around.. its the perfect spot to go to! read more

Leave it to high-brow suburbanites to be so unnecessarily critical of a classic American restaurant. I only read through the first couple of one-star reviews; people crying over spilled coffee and their children's metabolic malfunctions... I, however, was quite pleased with my visit last night. My server, a friendly young man, was nothing less than helpful and welcoming, and we couldn't have waited more than ten minutes before our food arrived. The order was almost complete, aside from some missing vegetables which were quickly brought out, accompanied by a sincere apology. I ordered lightly; two biscuits covered in gravy and a hash brown. The biscuits were fluffy and rich; surprisingly fresh despite being late at night. The hash brown was perfectly golden and appropriately salted. My only comment, which is not even a complaint, was that the gravy had an unidentifiable flavor that was unexpected of a simple white, flour-based gravy. There was no moment during our meal at which I, nor anyone in my party was kept waiting for something, and the check was brought out immediately upon request. Contrary to some of these Yelpers who claim they'd give zero stars if able (which by the way, A for creativity; I've never heard that one before...), I would gladly give 6. The first Denny's on Long Island was thrilling and incredible when it first opened but right now it's losing its pizazz and fast. The last two times I ate here with company were bad experiences with the last one being the worse. The first bad experience, the waitress was somewhat conscious up until she announced most of our food was ready. I say most because she admitted to screwing up one of our orders. Since we didn't want to wait any longer for our food than we had to (and we didn't wait that long to begin with), we accepted it as is and took it off the check. But the last time we ate there, we may consider not going back. The place was half-full but some people seemed to be getting their entrees faster than us. The server we got this time was very inattentive because after we ordered our food, we waited at the table for 45 minutes before she came back. When she did, she merely said our food was ready but it took another ten minutes for a DIFFERENT server to bring it to us. Actually, two of our orders came, the rest of us waited yet another fifteen minutes for the food to come. As if that wasn't bad enough, one of our orders was screwed up again. My mother ordered cowboy steak and she got two hamburger patties. If any restaurant passes hamburger patties as steak, that's a clear sign that even Gordon Ramsey won't save the place. Plus, what a surprise, we were told by the manager that there were NO COOKS IN THE KITCHEN. Everyone making the meals was untrained. But it doesn't end there, we ordered some dessert skillets for dinner and we waited still a long time for those. When they came, they were practically stone-cold. Then we found out why, one of our servers (at this point, we had two different people tending to us) complained that she burned her hand while picking them up. This isn't rocket science; It's a skillet, it's supposed to be hot. For God's sake, use an oven mitt. As a kid, I remember going to Connecticut or New Jersey just to eat at the closest Denny's we could find. I'm giving Denny's 3 stars because everyone SHOULD know what they are going to get when you go into one. They are not trying to be fine dining, and they don't want to be a Waffle House, either. They have a large selection to choose from, and a great number of value priced items. I would not suggest you bring a date here, but if you have young children, they will fit right in. On Tuesday's and Saturday's, there are free kid's meals, although they do charge 99 cents for their drink. Pancakes, eggs, and other breakfast items are comparable to IHOP. A decent dinner choice is the Sweet and Tangy Barbecued Chicken. Their BBQ sauce is very good, and you get two decent sized chicken breasts, and your choice of two sides. Now, the menu will mention that most dinners are served with dinner bread, but for all of the times we have gone there, not once have they brought it with the meal. It's my guess that management tells the staff not to bring it unless it's asked for. We ask for it, and you either get dinner biscuits, or garlic bread, depending on what they feel like bringing out. My kids like both. They are also big fans of the "pancake puppies' which are sort of like deep fried donut holes. 6 for $2, 10 for $3, they make good appetizers, and usually come out quickly. Often, they will come out almost burnt to a crisp, but if you complain, they will exchange them. Personally, I feel that the server should know not to serve them, but they do. Again, please don't mistake the 3 star review in comparison with fancier places. For a breakfast/family place, it's clean enough, and most people should find something they will like. And free kid's meals on the aforementioned nights make it better. Just check the bill, because half of the time the servers forget to take off the kid's meals, and you have to adjust it when paying. read more

I am only putting one star cause unfortunately I cant rate a zero. Let me start of by saying this was absolutely the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I went there with my family and my sister asked for her shake thicker, because the consistency was very watery and run down, and the waitress (who was much older than my sister) took it as an insult and said some very nasty responses in return. The manager came over and started lecturing us while not even hearing our side of the story. The manager took over and was extremely rude and unprofessional to us. Never in my life have I experienced a more unprofessional staff. She kept making comments to us nonstop about "how rude we were" when we were just asking for basic things like syrup for our pancakes. At the end of the meal she THREW the check on the table and put her hand up to us. Her name is Tracy. On top of that they got our orders wrong and the food was mediocre. Absolutely HORRIBLE. To start off service is always so slow. Totally understandable it's a restaurant based on the south where they like to take it slow but this is New York so we should speed it a little. I went there for lunch on a Sunday and it was pretty empty. The waiter came and took our order. We gave him our drink, apps, and entree order at the same time. The nachos came out quick but that doesn't impress me because how hard is it to pile up some chips? An hour..let me repeat AN HOUR went by and still no entree. As soon as I walked over to the front desk to complain they said the food will be out shortly. I told them I will not tolerate that because there's no reason it should take that long. We paid for our drinks and apps and called it a day. Definitely will not be coming back to Denny's anytime soon. read more

We go to Denny's occasionally because we love the burgers. I'll base this review on last night's visit, although the experience is usually the same. First, there is never anyone at reception and you have to wait for someone to come out and seat you. The tables surrounding us were dirty and remained that way through much of our stay. The staff was rushing around and apologizing for taking so long, yet there was hardly any customers in the restaurant. When our order was finally taken, it was time to sit back for the loonnng wait for the food to come out. When it did come out, the bacon which my mother had asked to be extremely well done was practically raw. Other than that, the food was good. In the middle of eating it, however, someone decided it was a good time to clean. This included vacuuming the carpets. I realize it has to be done, but very distracting. Waiter was pretty inattentive, when we asked for more coffee we didn't get it and had to ask again. He seemed young and inexperienced so I'm willing to give him a break though. It's never the best experience service wise, but like I said the food is good and prices reasonable. read more

I have a good experience every time I come here. I like most of the waiters/waitresses but I'm especially in love with Kathy; she is a sweetheart. The food is good (if you haven't had Denny's, it's just, very cheap Diner-style food, similar to Ihop, and the best entrees are the breakfasts, which are hard to get wrong). Most importantly, they are VERY accomodating of requests and special needs; I called ahead to ask if they could strain soup for me when on a broth-only diet, and they told me, "Of course, come on down!" I had the worst experience tonight with a Denny's employee. First of all, never order online, because it won't get done in the time you want. This employee was so rude and dismissive of me and completely walked away while I was talking to her. She refused to give me more than 2 seconds of her time and attention. Sad part is we are frequents at this Denny's and usually have a good experience and a friendly one with our servers, but this employee completely ruined the atmosphere for me and treated us like garbage from the minute we walked through the door. Our order was supposed to be ready 30 minutes prior to our order, and we got there at around that time, and continued to sit there for another half hour or even more. It was a horrible experience and the hostess/Server "Suzanne" was unhelpful and angry at the world. To make matters worse, she couldn't even muster up enough kindness and care to be nice on at least Thanksgiving. So thank you, Suzanne. Unfortunately as the other did not open till about a month ago they should be ashamed, corporate should do a serious over hail of this franchise! The service was only good ONE time! Let me start by saying that most of the Denny's I have visited were very good. However, the Denny's in Centereach NY, has redefined my satisfaction. When our order arrived, the waitress never brought my toast. My eggs were cold and so was my (extra charge tiny order mostly potato) corned beef hash. When I brought the issue of cold food to the attention of the waitress, she gave me a poor attitude telling me that they were very busy (NOT MY PROBLEM). Additionally we were never offered coffee refills. My Wife found the quality of the breakfast meats to be very poor and tasteless. My Granddaughter ordered a small apple juice. Me and my two friends needed a place to get something to eat, and told me about how there was a Denny's nearby. The place was easier to find then the reviews in hindsight and someone outside stopped what they were doing right away to greet us inside, that was nice and then after picking our seats the place seemed nice for the prices I saw, I assumed greasy but I'm not seeing it. The food wasn't 10/10 but that's not what I was expecting. It was great and I will come back for it. The girls out front were very nice and I felt good leaving my tip for the server, instead of alot of places that just left me wondering if I was too generous. My experience at this location was probably the worst I have ever had. I would not recommend it to any one. I went with my wife and two grandchildren. The parking lot was about half full so I thought we might have a little wait. We did get seated quickly but it went downhill fast from then on. It about took 10-15 minutes for a server to take our drink order but I understood because a lot of people wanted their checks and the place emptied out. We gave him our food order at the same time hoping to move things along. After 15 minutes of listening to "when are our drinks coming I'm thirsty" we got some of the drinks. Not all of them. 10 minutes later we got the rest. I asked the server if our food we be out soon. He said yes. We watched people get seated and then leave because they never saw a server. On a trip to the restroom I saw 4 or 5 servers counting their tip money while people were leaving because of the poor service. Another twenty minutes go by listening to "when is our food coming". I asked three other servers nearby to send the manager to my table as our server was nowhere to be found. The manager never came by. I had enough by this point and went to the register to pay for our drinks to leave. The server shows up at the table with 2 out of the 4 meals. I go back to the table and my wife tells me the server said he would be right back with the other 2 meals. We never saw him again. another 15 minutes went by and I saw the mgr. I asked him if he had gotten any of 3 requests to have him come to my table. Of course he said no. I told him about our experience and he offered no response. How could he? He would have to take responsibility for not doing his job properly. Very sad. I travel on the road a lot and have eaten in other Denny's and got good food and great service but will never visit this location again. read more

Waitress was not knowledgable about items on the menu. When I asked her if I could order a chicken wrap she simply said "we don't do wraps here". I have always gotten the build your own wrap at Denny's. I said would you mind asking if they can still make it? I would think this would be something a waitress or waiter might suggest on their own. So much for problem solving skills and good customer service. Turns out it was on another menu at the booth. The place was pretty much empty but the waitress wasn't quick or helpful. My boyfriend got two freezing cold eggs, 2 tiny plastic strips of bacon, hash browns because I guess they don't serve home fries and toast he waited until the end of his meal for. I had to get up and ask the hostess for utensils and napkins because none were on our table. I wasn't expecting a whole lot because it's not a 5 star restaurant but napkins and a fork and knife so my boyfriend who had mouth surgery recently could eat his meal? Sorry...don't think that's too much to ask for. We sat there in silence waiting for her to come back, but only when we spoke to the hostess did the waitress come back and ask us in an "oh guess I'm in trouble" kind of way how we were doing. My boyfriend questioned why his breakfast was about $11 when he got nothing and the manager said that's what you ordered that's what you got. We got a whole lot of attitude that's what we got lmao! visited this diner for a late night bite filler with a couple pals (also because every other food place was closed at this time). immediately after walking in the first thing to catch my eye was the service, trashy and unprofessional. despite getting over being heckled by chain smoking workers outside while walking in, it really irked me to be rushed around when eating but being the only ones in the restaurant. when placing my order of a "fried cheese melt" i was told i have the option of fries on the side for free. i was not informed later on that the seasoned fries costed extra. it was a scam. overall i did not enjoy my time spent here nor did my companions and do not plan on coming back anytime soon. the rating of one star even feels generous. read more
