The prices have increased quite a bit, which is the worst thing about it you can say. Came at lunch after hearing about it and wanting some hot spicy Asian food. It was not doing any dine in, so we took some to go. The prices have gone up from before, more so than at other places. It's about $10 for an entree. We chose to get one, and split the Pad Kee Mao. Entrees have a protein choice. We got tofu. It was hot and spicy as we like it. There was basil, bean sprouts, bell peppers, cabbage, jalapeños, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Good amount of heat from the jalapeños. The noodles were kind of soggy but okay. Get some spicy ass Thai food here. It has quite a few classics with big portions. This weekend, I traveled to Chicago with a few friends to attend a music festival, so I wasn't able to explore the Chicago food scene as thoroughly as I would have liked. We were able to make some last-minute lunch plans at Dena's Kitchen yesterday, however. When we arrived, one of the restaurant's employees greeted us warmly. He gave us time to peruse the menu and relax before we placed our orders. For starters, we got crab Rangoons and Vietnamese spring rolls. Then I got a Thai iced coffee and chicken panang curry for my meal. The lunch arrived promptly and was generously portioned. What a great hole-in-the-wall!!! Stumbled upon it while walking to a different dine-in spot and was craving Thai food more. I'm so glad we found this place! The food was amazing and freshly prepared. Dena is my local Thai place, so I've tried a few things here. Some dishes didn't quite have the flavor/ingredients I expected, like the pad kee mao. It was a little sour and had more bamboo shoots than I prefer. The pineapple rice is what keeps me coming back though. It's a bit heavier than the fluffy Thai fried rice I usually prefer, but the seasoning is so delicious. It's a crushable dish. The dining space is quaint and casual with service that feels family-run. For a local Thai joint, it's not half bad. There may be better Thai in Chicago, but Dena is just as good as any. Sometimes our timing is really off. Like deciding to order pizza instead of make it on Super Bowl Sunday and today, slacking on a dinner plan for Valentine's Day. Dena is pretty close to our house, but we don't order from here all that often. The food is pretty good and they really brought it when I asked for my panang curry spicy (I think I prefer regular, but that's on me). Where Dena loses points for me is servings. Husband got the pad thai which seemed smaller to comparable places. I got the shrimp panang curry and got plenty of food, but only 3 shrimp. This isn't the first time they I've been disappointed by the amount of protein they've given me, but definitely the stingiest serving. I'm defrosting shrimp so I can have some with my leftovers. I came here on a Saturday afternoon because I was craving some Thai food. This place did not disappoint. For apps I ordered chicken satay and fresh spring rolls. The rolls were fresh and delicious. The chicken satay was very tasty, especially dipped in the peanut sauce. As for the entree, I ordered chicken pad Thai. The pad Thai is a dish you can't go wrong with. We love the pad Thai, not too sweet and not fishy tasting. It seemed original, not typical, with a little spice. Sooooo good! Wow! Definitely my favorite Thai place I've had in Chicago. The chicken satay is cooked to perfection, the peanut sauce is addicting (I'm glad I ordered an extra cup of it because we were dipping everything in it), and the pad see ew was incredible. We got combo of pork and tofu and we will absolutely be ordering it again. The broccoli wasn't at all overcooked the way some takeout spots do it, the pork was almost like shaved tender flakes of meat, and the tofu was a great texture and totally satisfied my craving for non-meat protein. Obviously the noodles were fantastic too, wonderfully cooked, a little sticky with all the juices of the dish soaked up by them. My wife and I were searching for somewhere to eat very indecisively when we found Dena Kitchen. We weren't particularly in the mood for Thai food, but my wife's name is Dena, so we kind of had to go. When we arrived at about 6:00 pm we were the only ones there, typically not a great sign. But we decided to trust the Yelp reviews and head in. Several more people arrived shortly after. After getting the obligatory photos of my wife with the sign and menu, we selected some tasty sounding options from the menu. We started with the spring rolls which tasted so fresh and had great chili sauce for dipping. I had the pad Thai, which was ok maybe a little over cooked. My wife had the Dena Beef Noodle soup (basically pho) and said it was the best she's ever tasted. Well this is my 1st time coming to this particular Thai restaurant which is really close to Hermosa community despite being in Logan Square. There was some rave reviews about this place. So far the prices are fair and reasonable as well as the generous portion for Thai dishes. The ambiance is modest and NOT extravagant. I noticed they delivered all the dishes all at once which is somewhat of a disappointed. I ordered Dena sausage and the chicken Tom Kha but bit was all delivered in one session including my beef red curry. To start off I have to say the Dena sausage was fresh and delicious. They used fresh herbs and vegetables such as ginger, onion, hot peppers slices and peanuts as a garnish wrapped with lettuce and cabbage with the sausage. Very tasty. Although question if onions are a native vegetable in Thai cuisine? The chicken Tom Kha is good but nothing spectacular. It has the traditional taste but they didn't put a lot fresh basil leaves and fresh lemon grass. It's odd that certain Thai restaurants use tomatoes too in the USA. This is one of them restaurants and not really a big fan of tasting tomato slices in the Tom Kha or Tom yum soup. According to owner it's because most people who are non Asian don't like it like that so they have to cater to their orders. Sad. Last but not least was the main order of red curry. I ordered it with beef instead of my typical chicken I usually order it and it was decently delicious. What again was unusual was they used bell pepper which again is something I don't see in most other Thai restaurant. It was "OK" just odd to use bell peppers. It did taste like traditional red curry with the bamboo shoots and some basil. All in all it was "OK" good. I plan to come again every now and then. Finally had the chance to stop by Dena Kitchen. My overall experience was no less than perfect. The Food - My order consisted of Satay Chicken appetizer, mini egg rolls, and a special order of their Kapao Kai Kai Dao which is basically a fancier version of Thai basil. The satay chicken was well marinated and their house sauce was light yet filled with flavor. Their mini egg rolls really were just mini egg rolls lol nothing too special. The star of the meal was definitely their Kapao Kai Dao basil flavor was strong, egg was runny simple yet delicious. Service - Great overall service. Our server sparked up a conversation as soon as we walked in. She was very friendly and cheerful our whole meal. Parking - Plenty of meter parking on the street. Decor & ambiance - Plenty of seating, drawings and paintings everywhere, colorful interior. Pricing - Very reasonable pricing, some of the cheaper Thai food I've had in the city. Extremely friendly people and a great Thai option for a quick fix when you're in the area and have a craving. There are a few places I admittedly like better but they are too far away from the Logan Square area and require more time and planning. Dena Kitchen is always dependable, great prices for the quantity, and meets my Thai needs just fine. Favorite dishes include the Cashew Chicken, Pad Prik, and Mixed Vegetables with Chicken, with some added spiciness requested. I haven't explored the noodles but the curries are solid as well. Really what makes Dena Kitchen special is how lovely the people are as soon as you walk in. I'm always greeted in a warm and friendly way, my order is always ready on time, and I always leave with a smile on my face. They clearly recognize regular patrons and make it a point to strike up conversation and make you feel at home. The atmosphere is typical for a hole in the wall Thai restaurant, but everything is clean and welcoming. I haven't eaten in yet but I would have no problem doing so if time permitted - there are plenty of tables. Dena Kitchen might be a solid five stars in my book, but I need one more experience to make that call. For a number of weeks, I ordered the basil chicken every Sunday evening. They prepare it just the way I like it - minced chicken, tons of flavor. Occasionally I would order a noodle dish too, and save the basil chicken for dinner the next night. The Pad Thai is amazing - pad see ewe is just ok. The one issue I have is that last time I ordered, they did not prepare the basil chicken the same way. It was made with sliced chicken instead of minced chicken. The sliced chicken just does not absorb the flavor of the sauce the same was minced chicken does. I am hoping that this was a one time thing, or that they will at least still prepare it with minced chicken upon request. If they do, I will update this review to 5 stars. Yes, it's in the middle of a pretty uneventful block of Logan Square, but boy ol' boy, is this place going to be one of my new favorite spots. I ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken and Beef. I ordered the garlic chicken with special sauce and all I got was some strips of chicken over a leaf of lettuce, no sauce found. The other entre was pineapple fried rice with chicken and it had a about 4 pieces of chicken with about 4 pieces of pineapple. Yes. We ended up putting them together to have at least one decent entre. When we called they where not listening and not whiling to do anything about it.
