This place is alright went there last week we had to wait 30 min just for 7 people and we got split up 4 at a booth and 3 at a bar which was odd and the waitress was talking forever explaining the menu and how much they make now and how they are jacking up the prices and this and that and can we get a regular menu? I don't want to be squinting at the poorly spelled words on the above menus and it was 7$ for a slice of pie that tasted like it was 2 1/2 years old and they barely give you any coffee they fill the cup half way up and I got a deli sandwich and the old Italian bread cut the back of my throat for whatever reason and I got barely and fries which were burnt and had some lemon flavor to them which wasn't very good and could I just get a burger? I don't want to wait for "burger Monday" to get a flipping burger and it was 120$ for 7 people with all the up charges. read more

Maybe I'm just a little too critical about what I'm paying for when I eat out....My wife and I had seen the Delta Diner on a Food TV show and thought "hmmmm, that looks pretty good" So we drove about 140 miles one way, to get there. (am I crazy or what...It was a slow day in the northwoods so what the heck) Got there (it was a Saturday) and had a 30 min wait...good sign, right?? Well, finally got seated, waitress came and explained the whole menu, everything sounded so good...wife ordered the Deli sandwich, and I ordered the Perch BLT on recommendation that it was a wonderful choice...both came with fries...wife decides she had to have a milk shake which cost 6.50.....a little steep for some vanilla ice cream and malt powder... Meals came, fries were nice and crispy and still warm, Now for the complaint...My sandwich, was supposed to have perch on it,,,well, it did have two very very small brown things on top of the tomato, bacon and lettuce...these brown things were very thin and had breading on them...they were crunchy but tasteless...fish??? I've never seen perch filets so tiny...why bother calling it a perch BLT if you can't tell what it is...come on, Delta Diner, for $10, this sandwich could have been so much better.. I see other reviews from customers just loving this sandwich...but I wonder, maybe these people also love fish sandwiches from certain fast food places...My wife enjoyed her sandwich but again, nothing spectacular..good bread... Maybe I'm just a cheapskate, but 34.00 for lunch (tax/tip incl) was a little too much for me...maybe they could have given us a gas credit for driving more than 200 miles to get there..would I go back...hmmmm, only maybe if I were driving by to another destination...would I recommend this place??? Oh God I am in love. I don't even know where to start. We stopped in on a nice February Friday afternoon at 1:30pm hoping to snag a fish fry. They told us that the fish fry dinner was not available till 2pm. They went the extra step to explain why (the hash browns with asiago cheese would not be ready until 2pm). We left and went down the road for a beer and came back to experience what was by far the best fish I have ever tasted. The batter was very dry and spiced nicely. Not greasy at all. In fact I am not really sure that it was ever placed in grease. The asiago cheese hash browns were worth the wait. In fact I am entertaining the idea of driving the 4.5 hours from Minneapolis just to eat here every couple of months. The experience of the place was excellent as well. Once the owner found out that I am a photographer he offered to drive me down to the river to drop in a canoe then he would park his truck at the end of the canoe route and I could drive it back to the diner after the trip. Now I don't know about you, but coming from a big city, I was stunned at the level of trust that this person placed in someone they had just met. While we were in the diner an ex-employee stopped in, whipped out a 12 string guitar and started playing old Zep tunes. Awsome! Probably the best dining experience in years and years!! Two five star places in one motorcycle trip. :) wow. I've eaten here once before so I knew about it and we decided to make it a destination stop on the loop for home. It was a Friday morning at 10 and we had just a short 5 minute wait while they setup a spot at the counter for us. They are experimenting with a verbal menu which was nice to hear everything described. We watched the cook do his work and he did a great job with an economy of motion. They have changed their tipping policy and no longer will take tips per se, but they add 20% to your order which gets shared among all employees so they can make a living wage. I do wish more places would do this but I think in the case of any place, if you do it, you'd better offer stellar service. So let's start there. Service - Stellar. We wanted for nothing. Coffee was always full hot, food came out the minute it was done so it was piping hot. Friendly chat if you wanted. You can see ALL the employees really care and it shows. Nice... Food - Outstanding. I had the Nina Omelette. Super flavor, very nicely filled and I loved the way they put a bit of filling on top so you know what you are getting. The hash browns are the 2nd best I've ever had (ONLY beaten by Al's Breakfast in Minneapolis/Dinkytown). Nice and crisp on BOTH sides the way hash browns should be. My buddy had the Mex Benny which I thought was actually better than my omelette (I had a bit). Spicey and the cornbread? cake it was served on was simply delicious. All in all, it's a place more than worth taking the drive to (which we did). I'd love to come by for Burger Monday. read more

Wow!!! Really don't know what to say about this place! The food is off the chain and not what you would expect from a small town "diner". It is the cutest little place, the people who work here are awesome. So friendly and helpful. The menu is up on the board and they explain everything to you. Not your typical small town restaurant. Some of the items we had (you must get the pancakes, they are not traditional, different but awesome) you would find on a menu in the finest restaurants in the Gold Coast. Everything we had was delicious, even the eggs, lol!! Pancakes (plain and with hot peppers), Stuffed French Toast, Sausage Plate (the sausage is ridiculous), a Mexican style plate and a few other items. You won't be disappointed. Amazing food being served up in the great Northwoods! Menu changes all the time, but that is no problem because you really can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Ashland Baking Company makes a specialty bread for the diner. It was so good we visited Ashland Baking Company to load up on the bread!! Courteous staff. Tasty food. Not cheap, but not outrageously priced either. The problem I have with this place is their deception. Once seated, your experience begins with a long monologue about their no tipping policy. They go on about how they want to provide all of their employees with a living wage. That's great. I support that. (I'm also fine with a generous tip, but if that's your policy, go for it.) It gets shady when you see your actual bill. There is literally a line item for "Price Increase." They specifically do not call it "gratuity" and do not call out what the percentage is. If you have a no tipping policy, I assume you just build it into the price of the dish. And I'm fine with that. But to go on a long, sanctimonious, self-righteous rant about your holier-than-thou policy, and THEN charge a "Price Increase" is disingenuous and deceptive. They use their policy as a selling point to make you feel good about your experience. And then they treat you like a schmuck for buying into it. I've been here several times. I won't be going back. It's unfortunate because I like the food and the people. But they're frauds. read more

12/4/15, A very small place in the middle of nowhere,cute little diner, a Throwback to the "50s, 60s, early 70s. My wife had been there once before and so we drove (54) miles from Duluth, Mn. To try it again as I try to review each place we go to, so here is my review. We arrived at approx. 1:00 Pm for lunch. Small place, "Diner Type Building", cute, very clean, seats maybe (75) at most.Clean and well staffed. Seated this day immediately. Wait person was very cordial and knowledgeable. She informed us that they do not have table menus, with only (1) overhead sign showing the names of the different dishes, which was described by wait person on each item down the list, and she knew them by heart. My wife had soup & sandwich,while I choose eggs,bacon, toast, hash browns. Food was very good and well portioned, but I would not say it was terrific or something special. Pretty standard fare. As I have read some previous reviews on this place, I wonder how the reviewers came up with (5) fives stars. Other than the Diner Style Building, it was just good food as one would expect from any resturant. They have a no tipping policy, because they have a 20% surcharge to help pay the employees. I'm on board with paying the employees a livable wage, but I don't like a surcharge. Just raise the prices by the same percentage, then we know what each item is truly price at. I suspect that it's for the benefit of the owner when doing taxes. Anyway, the best I can rate this establishment is a standard (3-1/2) as I said, other than the building, it's what one would expect. A bit of a drive, but what a great find! The outside is the cutest ever!!! A real old fashioned diner type building. As soon as we drove up, I was glad we made the drive. When we stepped inside, I was a little bit scared of the menu selections, because it looked like a greasy spoon. The waitress came over and started reciting the menu selections and I quickly calmed down. The selections made you think that you were in downtown Chicago! Every item on the menu was well thought out, included interesting ingredients and sounded incredibly delicious!!! The entire staff got involved in our service and were super nice. We sat at the counter since there was a line to get in, but even that turned out well, due to the pleasant couple sitting next to us. Okay, so here's the deal... I'm a little hesitant to write this review. I'm hesitant to write this review because this place has the absolute BEST breakfast I have ever had in my entire life, and I kind of want to keep that to myself. I know that may sound pretty selfish, but seriously, it's that good. That being said, there are already plenty of people who have figured it out. Diners, Drive-Ins & Dive's doesn't come and check out your place unless it's something special, and something special is exactly what the Delta Diner is! My husband and I have now had the pleasure of stopping at the Delta Diner twice on our way home from the UP to the Twin Cities and it is well worth the extra time it takes to go a little out of our way and stop. Located in the middle of nowhere (I mean seriously, I cannot think of a better way to describe it), this gem is the quintessential diner. Both times we've been, my husband and I have intentionally left the UP super early to get to Delta Diner in time to beat the rush. Sometime between 8:00am and 9:00am on weekends seems to do the trick and we only had to wait a couple minutes the second time we are there. Your meal is started out by pie crust pieces covered in sugar and cinnamon which are so good. Their menu is super unique (not your typical diner breakfast food) and your waitress actually talks you through it. I have had the Pedro's Mex Benny twice. It was so good the first time I had it, I had to get it the second time (and will probably get it all the other times I ever go). This dish is on the list of the five best things I have eaten in my entire life. It's basically a Mexican take on egg's benedict, but it really is so much more than that. It is a Jalapeno Cornbread Cake, topped with two over easy eggs, toast and the most amazingly scrumptious gravy with ground chorizo that I have ever had. Look, it may sound odd and maybe like it's not a normal breakfast food, but take my word for it. IT. IS. INCREDIBLE. My husband has also had one of their specials, biscuits with redeye gravy which he thought was very tasty and a unique take on the dish but after trying mine, he converted over the next time we went. We've also had a slice of their pie (Caramel Apple) and it's just as good as the best homemade pie I've ever had! We got it "to go" and it lasted about 5 minutes into our drive before we had devoured it. All in all, if you take the time to head to Delta Diner, you're in for a treat. We live about 3 hours away and we've seriously debated just driving up there for the day for a meal. read more

He made friendly conversation with us that made us feel welcome. I cannot believe some of the negative reviews, our experience was out of this world fabulous! We will be back every time we are in the area! This is a unique and wonderful place to visit. Yes it is small, it is a diner! If you come with a large group I'm sure you won't all sit together. Wow! You have to go early if you want to get breakfast because it gets busy really quickly. The diner itself is amazing. Totally retro, but pristinly clean and well-maintained. The staff was really cool and seemed super excited to work there. They explain right up front that they have a 20% increase in prices so they can give their staff a working wage for the whole year which makes the prices high, but is an amazing way to keep the best staff in a tourist location. Don't begrudge them that at all. The food is amazing, creative, and full of locally sourced and unique items. We had the hash browns stuffed with pork, the pancakes, the stuffed french toast and the mexican omelet. They were all so good and such huge meals. Don't go with more than 5 adults because it is a small place and they don't have tables for large groups. read more

I was going to give this place a higher rating, but based on other honest low rated reviews that I totally agree with, I decided to be just as honest to bring this place to reality. We went for the first time on 7-30-17. We dropped our daughter and a friend off at Camp Northwoods down the road. My daughter had heard about it but never been so knowing it was a limited area, seemed to be just the place to eat. Oh boy! Just because we had never been there did not mean we couldn't read the menu board ourselves which was immediately in front of our table. Good thing we like breakfast because that is pretty much all you can get on a Sunday. We had a stuffed French toast, two Norwegian pancakes, and eggs/hashbrowns/toast. The food tasted fine, nothing exceptional, nothing better than I've had at Perkin's or Denny's. What I took issue with was their proud statement of no tipping, we just upcharge everyone 20% on the amount of your check. "100% goes back to the employees." Making that statement the same way a non profit will say all proceeds are donated to a food shelf or homeless shelter...it irked me. Mostly because if you are going to tell me up front that you are forcing me to tip 20% regardless of how I feel my service is, it better be impeccable! Not even middle of the road service! Dirty uniforms, open grilling and food, flies in the restaurants, dirty sauce bottles with gunky caps at every table, not checking on you to refill beverages, talking about inappropriate topics amongst yourselves but really amongst the patrons as well since it is so small. When someone has ordered any breakfast items like French toast or pancakes -- not a mystery that they will probably want syrup...so put it on the table before the food arrives! Having to ask for it after you drop off the food when it didn't appear that you were thinking of bringing it...again back to if you want to highjack patrons for 20%, earn it. Delta Diner is in a beautiful location. The diner is refurbished to look authentic. The food is definitely not authentic diner food nor diner food of any kind. Sort of an upscale eatery in a diner. Was told one of the specials was a stuffed hash brown which sounded delicious. When we went to order it we were told they were out. O.K. Not a huge issue. We ordered an Cheeseburger Omelette with toast and hash browns and the Salmon Filet with eggs, toast and hash browns. When the Salmon arrived we were told "it's a small filet so we'll charge you less". Several minutes later still no eggs, hash browns or toast. About four or five minutes went by, enough time to eat the 'small filet' and finally the hash browns, toast and eggs arrived. The eggs were ordered over medium but they were over easy at best. The Cheeseburger Omelette was very good. Our waters glasses were only filled minutes before we left, and they sat empty for a full fifteen minutes. All in all we liked the uniqueness, the food was adequate yet incorrect, and the service was sub par. The prices would have been fair if the food was better and the service was better. We will not be back and are hesitant to recommend but for the atmosphere and location. read more

I am not understanding all of the positive reviews for this place. I felt like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone! We were greeted by a very rude hostess named Mary. As our group walked in the wait staff numbered us. I had to run to the bathroom while my family was seated. As I walked to our table, Mary yelled to the waiter..."here comes number 4". I had know idea she was referring to me. He was waiting to read the menu to us and seemed put off that he had to wait for me. Not sure why we had to be read the menu. On the way there I had my mind made up that I was going to get a burger and fries. Not the case, you can only order a burger on Monday. What kind of diner only serves burgers on Monday? Not to mention the blue plate special was some sort of salmon dish for $17 and a malt was over $10. The food was a huge disappointment. My gourmet spicy, stuffed grilled cheese was not stuffed at all and had a couple of jarred jalapeño's on it. The fries were cold and nothing to write home about. I honestly couldn't wait to pay my bill and get out of that place. I felt like the employees were all a bunch of robots and the restaurant had a creepy vibe. I'm not one to frequent diners in the northern, backwoods of Wisconsin, but my husband & I were staying at Delta Lodge and this place is a stone's throw away from there. Wait staff is VERY friendly and kind and they know their stuff. During our week stay, we ate here a few times and we were never disappointed! Their chocolate shakes are awesome and made fresh with milk and ice cream like back in the day. I had a turkey and bacon melt which was devine. Of course we tried their burgers on burger Mondays: delicious! No doubt one needs to stop here if traveling up to Northern Wisconsin. They can't cater to what you want, but what they are offering up for the day is phenomenal! We leave tomorrow and we'll miss Delta Diner, that's for sure! read more

The Delta Diner is something beyond what I would call the greasy spoon diners I'm familiar with from New Jersey. The place is small but extremely clean and well staffed and the food is a cut above your typical breakfast fare. I had a PBLT, Perch Bacon Lettuce and Tomato, sandwich which was a bit unique and quite good with all fresh ingredients. The diner is also a destination situated in the beautiful Norther Wisconsin woods. I only gave 4 stars for the lack of variety on the menu. Burgers only available on Mondays? Stopped in on Friday late afternoon and was promptly told that the only item we could order was the fish. Should have been more observant as we were the only ones in the place eating. Waitress gave us a 3 minute robotic lecture on how great there new mandatory 20% tipping system was. Almost felt like I was on an airline getting the seatbelt/floatation lecture. There was good reason for the lack of customers. The fish was mediocre at best. The prices were out of this world. $17 for broiled fish and $15 for the small walleye. This was before the mandatory 20% tip. Reading the other reviews I sure am disappointed that I was forced into ordering the fish. This was a little delayed posting but here it is. This is my third experience with the Delta Diner. And I figured it warranted a review. All the breakfast I've had have been very good, but this morning I chose the "foragers bowl." It included fiddleheads, ramps, stinging nettles, Bracken ferns, wild Bergamot, Ostrich Ferns mixed greens, served over Wisconsin wild rice topped with two perfect over easy eggs. It was explained that this is made differently every day depending on what their license forager could find in the woods. My cup runneth over with coffee, I never had to ask for more. Okay. I made the pilgrimage. Yes, it was well worth it. Beautiful drive there. When it says diner it means vintage-style diner car, chrome and mahogany trimmed. Immaculate. Booths and counter seating available. They have a menu posted on the board that was verbally explained for newbies like us. Breakfast and sandwich options offered all day. We tried a smorgasbord of appetizers, breakfast, sandwich and desert options. All were really awesome. Flavorful and fresh. The newly featured cardamom lemon ice cream from the Purple Door in Milwaukee was particularly delicious. Happy travels, folks. You will not be disappointed. read more

I ordered the mex benny, and was not a fan. I asked a server if I could exchange my order for something else. I was told "no you ordered that, but we can put in another order for you" she took my plate away and I ordered something else. It was good, "the big boy." When it was time to pay I saw that my first order was still on my ticket, they were making me pay for a meal I didn't even eat! I said something, why am I paying for a meal I didn't even eat? "Because that's the policy." "Your server discussed the menu with you, you knew what you were getting. It's a personal preference that you don't like it, nothing was wrong with it." (The verbal menu makes everything so confusing and hard) it's just an uncomfortable experience. I said ok, I didn't know what I was getting actually and the server told me that I should order it. Why should I have to pay for something that was recommended and THAT I DID NOT EAT. She said "sorry that's just how it is." I said "I'm never eating here again." She said "we don't need you."
