BBQ Chicken Avocado sandwich, The Cuban Flat Bread Chili coffee
    Lisa S.

A classic, old school diner, complete with corresponding prices! Our waitress was friendly and offered suggestions, the food came out hot, delicious, and quickly. We opted for the house chili as the side to our sandwiches and it was perfect with a hint of spice and full bodied flavor! The Cuban my husband ordered was chock full of flavorful meat, and my bbq grilled chicken with Swiss and avocado on sourdough was perfection. We loved our stop at Breakwater!

Swedish Meatball Special of the day-split in half (not 2 orders-just ONE order split in HALF!)
    Molly M.

Okay, it's not the fanciest/newest place on the lake...but it does deliver good food at a reasonable price. Lots of locals eating here today when we had lunch. Picked the Swedish Meatball Special for lunch but I thought I would just snack on my hubby's lunch. When the kind server heard that she must have known I was more hungry than I realized. She had the kitchen split the order into half-this was MORE than enough for us! I haven't met a Swedish meatball that I haven't loved! Great view of the lake from our table too. Don't expect fancy...expect good, wholesome food.

We stopped in for a quick lunch. We were informed that Swedish meatballs were the special. We ordered the large and had it split. We got enough for the two of us and it was very tasty. Very good value.

    Two coneys with curly fries
    RR G.

I ordered the two coneys with curly fries. The menu said 1/4 lb hotdog, which was a lot! The bun they are served on is different than any hotdog bun I've had. It's almost like a hoagie bun. It was very good, just a lot more food than expected. I would have been good with just one. The service was ok. The guy seemed occupied with other tasks like cutting fruit at the counter. He ended up forgetting my friends soup he ordered. The bathroom was really gross looking. Overall the experience was meh. I probably wouldn't return if I come back to Ashland.

Contry fried steak and eggs with pancakes...$7.99

No complaints here, breakfast came fast and was good. Hashbrowns were great...I like them crispy. Everything was cooked to order. They deserved more than the two star rating they had when I came so I gave them 5 stars.

Country fried stake hash browns eggs and pan cakes. 7.99.

Just run off the mill greased spoon type of establishment. It'll fill a hunger but not recommend.

The servers were very quiet and one of the girls looked like she didn't want to be there at all and I was there for over an hour for a salad

Thank ordered a GF "wild rice burger" and they knew enough about their gluten practices that they knew to tell me the fries were in a shared fryer. They put it on a GF bread also. When I got my "burger" it seemed like it was just shredded beets mashed together in a patty shape. I don't like beets, but it was actually quite good. The aoili sauce that was with it really brought out a delicious seasoned flavor. I actually asked about for more sauce to eat with the beets that spilled out of the sandwich and she told me that it was wild rice mixed with the beets. The menu just wasn't very clear at all (I thought it would be ground beef mixed with wild rice! ha!) My kids split a waffle which they said was delicious, the bacon was tasty and thick, and the fried rice had really good good flavor with a good mix of texture (husband and kids both really loved it.) One thing : it was an order at the counter type place and they charged us the tip when we paid for the email upfront. Kind of weird but maybe something you have to do to get staff to work on an island in this kind of workforce. Total meal price was $64 for three plates and two coffees. A bit on the expensive side.

I've only ever been for breakfast, but everything is so fresh and fantastic. I make a point to have breakfast at least one of the mornings on every trip up!

About three hours on the road and time for a routine rest stop. Long enough to stretch the dogs and use the restroom. Really the sole reason for the stop. Call it a social norm or just the right thing to do, we believe the use of a business's bathroom should be followed-up with a purchase. Even without that terrible "bathrooms are for paying customers" sign. We ordered iced teas to-go and started perusing their menu when we noticed all the wonderful choices and decided lunch come early today! The food was pretty good. Bathrooms clean. The biggest shame was that we had to leave and eat in the car with the dogs while we travel. The dining room was priceless. An incredible rustic feel, for sure. That cozy, down-home atmosphere that just makes you want to stay. To top it off, they have a monitor in the corner featuring a lighthouse cam. I'm guessing somewhere on Lake Michigan? Great views of some pretty big ships! The couple running the place were a treasure. Don't like what they put on your sandwich? What would be better? They're happy to comply and have you back! We would love to make it back here again, someday. 10/23
