Went looking for a local breakfast spot while staying in the neighboring town of Herbster and came upon Time Out, which has a classic rural diner vibe. We were greeted as soon as we came in by a kind woman on the staff, and she told us we could sit at any open table. We picked a small table for two by a window and reviewed the menu while she brought us coffee. Every table who asks for coffee gets their own insulated carafe and bowl of sugar and creamer, quite nice since you don't have to asks for refills and the place seems pretty busy....at least it was when we visited on a Wednesday morning. I ordered the ultimate hash with eggs over easy and rye toast. My husband ordered scrambled eggs with bacon and three pancakes, but they had an issue with one of the pancakes, so they substituted a piece of French toast. When we saw the food come out to our table we instantly knew we ordered too much. The portions are huge! Anyway, everything tasted great and we took our leftovers to go for an afternoon snack. This small diner is very generous...you definitely get your money's worth and then some. Make sure you have cash or a check...they don't take credit cards. I would come back again. Thanks! read more

I came here for two reasons, proximity to my hotel and recommendation of the hotel desk clerk. I drove past it a couple of times since the sign seems to be having a bit of trouble lighting up, but once I found it, it was fine. It's an older property but serviceable, there's a counter with stools and plenty of tables. My first impression is that it is a typical mom & pop operation, a local, greasy spoon diner, the place the locals love and travelers are lucky to find. And I was right! The menu is aimed at the breakfast clientele, although there are dinner items on the menu, too. I opted for a "Potato Lovers" concoction called "The Ultimate." I asked if there was a half size order since I don't eat very large quantities of food and it's tough to do boxes when I'm traveling. What to my wondering eyes should appear but a huge plate full of hash brown taters mixed with diced ham, tomatoes, green peppers, and onions, all covered with a melted roof of cheddar jack cheese! If this was half size, I'm nervous to see what a full order would be! (I took more than half of it with me in a box. I have a cooler and I'm headed home today so it'll be fine. I'm looking forward to having it for breakfast!) It was terrific, by the way, and I would order it again if I returned to Washburn. A cute little home town diner with friendly service. My wife had the corn beef hash that was delicious. I had the chicken fried steak which is something I order fairly often from many different restaurants, and I have got to say the chicken fried steak they served me was hands down one of the bests I've ever had. Well done. The only thing my wife and I found a bit odd was they have two tables in the restaurant with yard sale items on there apparently for sale. Things like toothpaste and 90s phone accessories and random women shoes. I wouldn't think I could get a bottle of shampoo and a delicious chicken fried steak in the same place lol. Stopped for a quick bite to eat before heading to Bayfield. No frills restaurant offering plenty of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Service was quick and friendly. Was a little busy when we arrived but there was no delay in ordering or receiving our meals. Food was very reasonably priced and the portions were huge. My boyfriend and I ordered potatoes, The Ultimate and Road Kill. Basically stuffed hashbrown with meats and veggies that included your choice of toast. We also ordered a side of pancakes. We visited here for dinner and my wife and I really had a bad evening meal. She ordered the fish - which was very old and had the very fishy / old frozen taste. I ordered the chicken-fried steak dinner and it arrived completely overcooked and tasting fishy from I suppose frying the two together. The meals were accompanied by old dried-out and bad mashed potatoes and a scoop of corn that seemed like a two-day dried-out leftover. The server never inquired about if the food was acceptable (she didn't care). We vowed then and there to not return for any of our other meal needs when in town visiting relatives. In February there are very few places to eat in Washburn that were open but it was far safer to drive into Ashland instead. read more

This local cafe has been here since I was a little kid in the 80's. it's open for every meal and it looks like they serve breakfast all day? The fries are tasty (maybe not as crispy as I'd like) and the food is cheap. Portions are ample. Locals eat here and it seems as reliable as it was when I moved away back in '94. The service is good too, I love that they don't act fake and blow smoke up your arse. read more

Family was in town for vacation and there was nothing else open on a late Saturday night. The guys took our order and said not to worry about timing - kept the place open an extra fifteen minutes for us while we wrapped up. Really can't thank them enough. I came to this restaurant with big expectations and left with depression. They only had three menus for the whole restaurant. I ordered soup, only to find out there was no soup. Such a disappointment. Family has eaten and bragged on this place for years, and we've watched it slowly go downhill. Portion sizes used to be decent, mini fish fry used to come with so many fries you couldn't possibly eat them all. This time, they were cold, and the portion was scantier than a small McDonald's order. Dessert offered with the fish fry used to vary from week to week (pudding, jello, cake, etc). The past year or so, it's been only jello, and this time the waitress acted like it wasn't even included (though it was). I had a mushroom and swiss burger with a salad. The salad was the only good thing about the meal. The swiss wasn't swiss, it was white american. The mushrooms appeared to be cold ones taken right out of the can. The burger itself didn't even taste like beef. It tasted like the cheapest frozen pre-pattied burger containing lots of additives like soybeans, and only the good Lord knows what else. I brought almost half of mine home, just to feed it to the dog (hope it doesn't make him sick). I think Time Out is out of time. We've heard good things about Four Corners, perhaps we'll try that one next. read more

We had breakfast here a couple of times before going out on the lake. A couple of doors down from our hotel, opens at 6. I had the biscuits and gravy and a couple of eggs each time, and I thought it was very good. Eggs were over easy and done as close to perfection as I think they could get, whites cooked just right and yolks wonderfully liquid. Biscuits were good and the gravy was good as well, and the portions were good. Coffee was OK, could have been stronger, but it was drinkable. My friends had a big four egg bacon and cheese omelet, ham and egg scramble, waffles and bacon, with some mixed reviews about the waffle and bacon, but overall it's a good spot for breakfast. The menu is varied enough so that you should be able to find something on there to get your attention. Popular with the locals. Service was prompt and friendly. read more

What kind of restaurant lectures customers to clean up after themselves that they're jobs what the hell! You get off your lazy butts and do it! Been here about a million times, never had a complaint until recently... Never had a bad experience until this lady cook (I didn't catch her name, she was bigger) was cooking. Food was NOT good, which is a shame since Time Out always has good food. And she was rude. We could hear her complaining in the kitchen about various order and treating other employees with total disrespect. Also, a waiter named Joey was really rude and made everybody uncomfortable. He sat at tables with customers, ignored my table and various other tables to chat with people he knew, and just wasn't very professional... I hope this is an isolated incident and I hope the people who seem to drag my expectations of this business down are either removed from their jobs, or reprimanded. I'd like to go back there and have good experiences again. read more

I was excited to find a classic diner within walking distance of our motel (North Coast Inn) so we headed there for a mid-morning breakfast. The veggie omelet was huge and fluffy and the blueberry pancakes were better than average diner pancakes. The best thing was the value!
