My sister and I made it a point to stop at this place to sample some of their baked goods while we were up in the northland in later October 2024. The afternoon we were there, it was extraordinarily blustery outside, with dirt being whipped around town as their major through road area was under construction. We parked our vehicle and walked a block or two to Coco, where we got a hot beverage to sip on while enjoying the hot blueberry turnover that had just come out of their oven. It was sooo delicious! Flaky pastry folded over generous, intensely-flavored blueberry filling. The experience brought me right back to childhood memories of eating the frozen ones made by Pepperidge Farms that you baked in the oven at home. It was the rare occasion that my mom bought a box or two of them (there were 4 per box, and there were 5 members in my family), most likely, when they were "on sale" at a local grocer. On a recent girls trip, three out of the four of us had dairy and gluten intolerances so we made sure to include Coco's on the way home, even going out of our way to get there. After waiting in line for 20 minutes, we were only then told that hot food would take nearly an hour. That's something the line should be updated on every few minutes so people can decide whether to wait or not. The staff were very kind and efficient, and the girls with intolerances were happy to see such a large variety of options. They definitely need a bigger space to handle weekend rushes, but I get it, small town charm. The food and drinks we had were pretty good and overall fine, aside from the wait and the last minute news about the hot food. Would recommend for the people with intolerances but keep in mind it might take a while! read more

Amazing little bakery if you ever get to Washburn it's a must stop! My friends shared the frittata with 3 sides they chose the rosemary potatoes, bacon and fresh fruit and Washburn area is know for their blueberry's. My friends were moaning in delight with each bite they took. I had the toad in the hole on a grilled cheddar bread with bacon. Very good but a tad uninspiring. Cute little place that was VERY busy, they announced any breakfast coming out of kitchen was an hour wait. But well worth it they also sell home made breads, scones, muffins, cookies all made in house. They pride themselves on recycling and composting of everything but the silver ware. read more

Stopped by here after a walk through Houghton Falls. All the pastries and sandwiches looked so good we didn't know which ones to choose. My kids ended up ordering cinnamon rolls and hot chocolate. I ordered a strawberry scone and latte. My husband ordered a Mocha. I have to say this is the BEST cinnamon roll I've ever had in my life!!! Not too sweet. Was on a trip to the area and on our way out of town, we were hoping to grab coffee and breakfast. Found this spot on Yelp and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! One thing to note, they're very popular and so expect the possibility of a bit of a waid. They have some outdoor seating as well as indoor. We opted for indoor as the outdoor seating was pretty full and we had a party of 5. It's an order at the counter and they'll bring your food to you sort of situation. Coffee, however, they call out and you have to pick up. They have a variety of made-to-order food options as well as a full bakery case. I ordered a frittata to go along with my espresso beverage. They warned me that because they were so busy that it would take 30-40 minutes. That said, it took closer to 20 and was well worth the wait. And, of course, I had their delectable coffee to sip on in the meantime. The service was for the most part great. There was one barista that was absolutely impatiently bellowing the names for coffee orders, but another worker intervened and took the coffees from her to find their owners. Aside from that loud hiccup--a wonderful spot, utilizing local ingredients, and serving up delicious food and drink! Get to it! read more

If you're in the mood for a side of hostility with your overpriced breakfast, this is your spot. We asked what should have been a simple request - to add a menu item to a dish - and were met with an immediate, unblinking "no" from the cook, who didn't even have the courtesy to let his own hostess finish her sentence. Instead, he barked the refusal in our direction, then stood and glared at us for the remainder of our order AND while we ate - like we had personally insulted his ancestors. This wasn't quirky or "passionate chef energy." It was rude, unsettling, and deeply unprofessional. We paid $60 for a breakfast that came with tension thick enough to cut with a butter knife. Hospitality isn't just about food. It's about how people feel when they're spending their time and money at your establishment. And in this case? We felt unwelcome, uncomfortable, and frankly stunned that anyone in the restaurant business would treat paying guests this way. To the man in the green shirt and multicolored bandana: if you're going to stare daggers at your customers, at least be kind to your colleagues and put out acceptable food. While the food/bakery goods were good and all of the other workers were fabulous - this hostility and blatant rudeness by this guy was unacceptable. I've never felt more uncomfortable in a restaurant like I did yesterday and will unfortunately never spend time near, in or around this place ever again. Hard pass. read more

This is a great stop in Washburn. Friendly service, great baked goods. The kitchen was pretty backed up yesterday so we passed on the French toast and I had a bacon cheddar scone and a terrific cup of coffee. My wife had a blueberry turnover. As always, I got a muffuletta to go. I ate it at home about 8 hours later and it was fantastic. I will be in the area next weekend as well for some bread and of course a muffuletta. They have outdoor seating, compostable cups and plates, and several GF options. read more

After waiting 45 minutes for our food we asked the server/cashier to check on our order. "Oh, our kitchen printer went down so the kitchen never got your order." Really? Every think of coming out and telling people or asking in the small crowded dining room if anyone hadn't gotten their order that was placed 45 minutes ago? Coco is one of few places in the lovely Bayfield-Ashland area that has labeled vegan options. It also has homemade vegan baked goods. It's an artsy, hippie cafe only a few blocks from Lake Superior. It's a nice refuge. The no meato burrito ($14) is vegan by default and a nice, warming and filling chickpea vegetable wrap. It hit the spot. The masoor dal bento box ($12) is vegan if you don't use the raita (yogurt sauce) that comes with it on the side. This dish fell flat, as it's basically just a cold wrap. It felt like a notch above airline food. The vegan chocolate cupcake ($4) was spectacular: moist, fluffy and richly cocoa-y. I loved it. Came during the 4th of July weekend. They weren't serving hot food. However, the place was really busy. Had a very tasty strawberry scone...it was extremely fresh and delicious. Had a good amount of indoor seating and some outdoor space too. I noticed a lot of the locals picking up loaves of fresh baked bread and focaccia. I really hate to repeat myself, but Coco's deserves another 5 star review. Today's lunch was perfection in EVERY bite & sip. From the Hibiscus Iced Tea (slightly sweetened with local honey) to the FRESH glass of local milk, the unusual but OUTSTANDING Lake Trout Reuben & local squash soup. Yeah, I bus our dishes when I'm through eating-because I can see how busy the staff is serving the next starving hoards of people coming thru their doors. Thank you CoCos! If it's open, expect a crowd because the pastries are worth it! We ate at the outside tables because the inside tables were full. Everyone in our party raved about their breakfast choices. I have no photos because everything was immediately seized & enjoyed! I would love to recommend their oatmeal-no, not your run of the mill Quaker Oats variety! It comes with hot peppers, cheese and a side of au jus. It's absolutely delicious!! -Fish Rueben sandwich: was not my favorite. It's deep fried fish, thousand island dressing and sauerkraut sandwiches between two heavy slices of whole wheat bread. It's too heavy, I removed a lot of the bread. -Side of tabbouleh: I love a good tabbouleh but this one needed more olive oil and lemon, it was way too dry and flavorless. -Side of pasta salad: was good! -Chicken salad sandwich: my friend loved her sandwich. -Triple decker grilled cheese sandwich: we were expecting more cheese, maybe even different types of cheese when you have 3 layers of bread. So you know I am a Coco's junkie. I come up to the Bayfield area at least once a month and Coco's must be on the gastronomic agenda at some point. Their breakfast is outstanding as are their lunches. I love their falafel and tabouleh. Among other things!! Their coffee features Big Water Coffee Roasters coffee and is the best in the north. They have a special of the day and they have a large selection of sides. The cafe is a charming little eclectic place and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The bakery is OUTSTANDING. I ALWAYS buy bread to take home. Always. And their cookies and pastries and cheesecake and desserts are to die for. I cannot recommend this place enough. Standing in line to order breakfast, my mouth watered as I looked at all the pastries in the display case. This may have been a happy accident but more likely by design! I'm usually able to resist but "turnover with fresh local blueberries" made it to my plate (and was worth every calorie!). Had the baked oatmeal with apples and walnuts and it was very satisfying. Stopped again this morning on our way out of town for a pre-made sandwich. I generally don't like pre-made sandwiches and was reminded why when I unwrapped it a few hours later: while it was tasty, the bread was soggy. We went here last year for breakfast. We decided to try it again for lunch. I'm not a real mac and cheese nut but this was great. It had roasted broccoli, bacon chunks and of course real cheese. Everything here is so fresh...they have a great variety. I contacted them about doing a birthday cake for my dad's 70th being that we got a lake house not too far from them. I got an instant response from them and a ton of choices to choose from. Went to pick up the cake and ended up buying fresh breads, pastries and cookies. We finally arrived on the wintery shore of Lake Superior in the town of Washburn. The internet told of a must-stop bakery called Coco Artisan Breads and Fine Pastries. We were not let down: the place was magnificent. I got a griddled ham sandwich with melted, velvety Wisconsin cheddar on homemade bread, and a rich buttery snowman cookie. The blue / green art in the washroom was a frothy mural of the Apostle Islands: the blacker art on my car was a log of the miles on icy Northern roads. Coco, the kept promise of satisfying and artisanal food so close to the void, made the trip seem worthwhile. read more

Yum bakery--we stopped for sandwiches before kayaking. It's an organic, localvore kind of place, which is one of my favorite types. Bread delish, lots of lettuce, basil dressing interesting. The 'ostrich ear' cookie was amazing (speaking as an amateur baker here). Went back a couple days later for breakfast. Toad in the whole was super-filling for a great price. Got some filled turnovers to take home, but honestly, I wasn't as impressed as other reviewers seem to be (perhaps they've never had an apple orchard turnover?). Also got a jar of jam (I'd skip the raspberry) and coffee. Pricing is fair for the quality you are getting. Lots of options and changing specials. I felt like I could have stopped here every day of my trip to eat and been fine. I'd tried their salads -- the Asian sesame noodles are the best! -- at the Chequamegon Co-op, but it was a real treat stopping into Coco for lunch and trying the delicious falafel sandwich. It was delicious! The variety they offer -- with meals, with baked goods, with deli items -- is awesome. Great little cafe en route to Apostle Islands! My friend has a Gluten allergy and she really enjoyed their GF Strawberry cupcakes! She loved them so much that she went back for more. She described them as delightfully moist and flavorful with a cream frosting that was not too sweet! My friend also had a GF soup, which she really enjoyed. I enjoyed their cheddar and bacon scone and took a slice of cheesecake to go, both were sinfully delicious! The strawberry cheesecake had a chocolate ganache on top - so amazing! This place is a cute, local, family owned shop offering so many freshly baked goods and some warm meals. It is totally worth the stop: enjoy something in the shop and make sure to take something to go (or you'll wish you had later)! My only regret about this place is that we read their menu from the Bayfield visitor center, but after 5 PM they mainly do soups, heated pre-made sandwiches and salads.. not bad, but wish we had known to come sooner as their menu sounds just as scrumptious as their pastry and bread offerings!
