Great little cafe en route to Apostle Islands! My friend has a Gluten allergy and she really enjoyed their GF Strawberry cupcakes! She loved them so much that she went back for more. She described them as delightfully moist and flavorful with a cream frosting that was not too sweet! My friend also had a GF soup, which she really enjoyed. I enjoyed their cheddar and bacon scone and took a slice of cheesecake to go, both were sinfully delicious! The strawberry cheesecake had a chocolate ganache on top - so amazing! This place is a cute, local, family owned shop offering so many freshly baked goods and some warm meals. It is totally worth the stop: enjoy something in the shop and make sure to take something to go (or you'll wish you had later)! My only regret about this place is that we read their menu from the Bayfield visitor center, but after 5 PM they mainly do soups, heated pre-made sandwiches and salads.. not bad, but wish we had known to come sooner as their menu sounds just as scrumptious as their pastry and bread offerings! Outstanding! Gluten free and vegan treats, too! Did we come here twice in one day? Yes. Sure did!!! Great raspberry lemonade, Blueberry danish, cinnamon roll, lemon bars- whoa yummy! Chocolate cupcake was enormous and delightful. We couldn't get the peanut butter pie off our brains all day so stopped again to try it on our way back through town after visiting the apostle islands. The reason the line is down the block when traveling on your way to the apostle Islands is clearly evident. The salad, the steak sandwich and the muffin were all fabulous. However the strawberry turnover that a local recommended while in line was absolutely fabulous. I have never had a strawberry turnover before and hands-down this was my favorite tasty morsel on my apostle Islands trip. Excellent lunch stop! The soups and chicken sandwich were great and we had the black bean and turkey and wild rice soups. All was served very safely and made to order so all was hot and fresh. There is no inside seating so we walked across the street to the local chamber of commerce where there was benches as well as a table. Will plan on stopping on our return to Duluth. read more

Stopped for breakfast on our way out of town, party of 4. Restaurant was medium busy. Pastries looked fantastic but we held off ordering until after our meal. Two people had the "Really Swell French Toast" and agreed it was not so swell. There was unexpected cream cheese in the middle and the bread was too dry. Another had the toad in a hole, which was dry cheese bread with an egg in the middle. The best meal was the frittata, which was a generous portion size and had the best flavor. Sadly the latte could only be made with skim milk, no whole milk was offered. The result was as expected. We requested two separate checks but we got one grand total, making a second request to split the bill unnecessarily awkward. We also drank water and were not once offered a refill. When we went to the counter to ask for a refill we were met with attitude - the woman seemed inconvenienced by the request and I was told I could go to the sink behind the counter to refill it myself. Another person in the party had a similar experience when he asked for more water. At this establishment you bus your own tables. Overall the service is zero, food is a two. We ended up passing on the pastries because we weren't impressed with the meals. Too bad. read more

I had the strawberry turnover as well since they are in season and it was delicious. Flaky and not too sweet- just what I wanted. The only thing that didn't quite make it was the walnut brownie. This was a phenomenal stumble upon! Had asked at the gas station what some good restaurants were. He suggested a couple of bars. We saw Coco's on our way & decided to give it a whirl. SO glad we did! My mac & cheese was full of chicken & bacon with ranch flavor. My hubby's grilled cheese was wonderful (he said a smoked provolone or smoked gouda would be a tasty option. Just a suggestion. ) The maple sweet potato salad with walnuts was an unexpected lip smacker and the Mediterranean pasta salad had the perfect mix of ingredients. The selection of baked items: breads, cakes, cheeeecakes, bars, cookies, brownies, turnovers, scones, muffins........the selection will make your head spin! What an delight it was to pop in for a quick breakfast and find so many delicious offerings. I'm gluten free and the rest of my family is not and we were all very happy. I treated myself to a strawberry cheesecake cupcake and it was perfection. According to my teenage son, the raspberry turnover was also perfection. My wife and I affectionately refer to this "Rocket Baby North" (Milwaukee residents will understand this). My wife and I hop between the three towns/cities in this area (Washburn/Ashland/Bayfield) about once or twice a year. I've drove past this place many of times, but I didn't stop until I stumbled across the mostly positive yelp reviews. My wife is very indecisive and she thinks that I always order better food, so she decided that we should split our meals at restaurants and share. I'm ok with this, mostly because I get a chance to sample more food. My wife definitely won this round by ordering the Lake Trout Reuben Sandwich. A very large piece of fried trout graced the very good rye bread, and was topped with thousand island, Swiss cheese and an incredible sauerkraut. The fish tasted very fresh, almost like they walked a little ways to Lake Superior and caught it themselves. This is definitely the best sandwich I've had north of Milwaukee. My sandwich, the Apple Cranberry Cheddar Turkey was very good as well. It came on an incredible cranberry walnut bread which I expected to be sweet but it was surprisingly subtle. Perfectly little pieces of cranberry and walnut hit my taste buds as the bread perfectly crumbled. The turkey was super, it tasted more like it was cut off the Thanksgiving turkey instead of crappy deli cuts. Sautéed apples and onions top this sandwich. We both ordered the roasted potatoes as a side, which were good but not that great. It's still better than the fries that mostly every place offers with Sandwiches. Props for not only having a kids meal, but one that comes with a banana as a side. Surprisingly my daughter loves fruit and veggies more than the usual kids side that consists of fries. Big Water Coffee is served here, as it's somewhat local and served at a lot of the restaurants in the area. It's very good and I appreciate three options of just regular black coffee instead of just crappy Foldger's. We couldn't leave without dessert. I wasn't sharing my incredibly rich and thick piece of Cardamom Chai Cheesecake. It was a perfect balance and one of the better slices of cheesecake I've had in the state. The service was above par, especially considering the cranky lunch rush they had. Everyone was nice and we were served quick, even though at times there were lines going out the door filled with pretty rude people. One women held up the kitchen even more by claiming the bread on her gluten-free sandwich "wasn't as crumbly" as the one she ate months before and refused her sandwich. This type of behavior isn't common with the locals who tend to be very nice. I blame it on an influx of Illinois license plates during the busy Memorial Day Holiday weekend. This is definitely worth the stop if you are anywhere in the area and it's definitely one of the best places to eat up here. We will definitely be back. read more

We expected over the top breakfast but it was not good. For new comers there is no signs telling you their process: order at front, they will serve you and bus your own tables. The tables were dirty. Love, love, love Coco!!! In Chequamegon Bay area eatery style, check ahead on hours before you head on over to coco. They have limited afternoon dining. We keep saying we will make it over for breakfast, but lunch keeps us coming back. The food is delicious. Everything in the menu is tasty, thoughtful, locally sourced (when possible), and creative. I don't usually order beef, but theirs is tender and cooked exactly right. Sides are delicious, too (pecans with sweet potatoes? Yum). I like the endless soup with deli Sammy and cookie option. They have plenty for my vegetarian husband. BTW, don't over-look their deli case selections! These are worth a peek. The roast beef sandwich on cherry walnut bread is excellent. If you are in Ashland and want a taste of Coco, these are usually available at the coop. The help yourself coffee bar is excellent. Like I said... love, love, love Coco!!! read more

Can a person say enough good things about this restaurant? Where to begin? The soups are always phenomenal and I usually pair them with a turkey and Swiss on cranberry bread sandwich but they offer several options of fresh sandwiches.. Cocos also offers options for finicky diets. The variety on the menu is amazing and they always have fresh ingredients and wonderful staff! Breakfast is served until 11 and is always amazing. My husband and I stopped here for breakfast. I had toad in the hole (eggs over easy in the middle of a piece of toast) with bacon and fruit. My husband had the French toast with banana and caramel sauce. I was grateful not to have to eat a Wonder Bread-based breakfast, but I was surprised that the dishes we had weren't more tasty. The home baked cheddar-herb bread in my breakfast was not terribly cheesy or herby, and the texture was not that substantial. I had to ask for a pat of butter to liven up the toast. The accompanying bacon was delicious, however, and kudos to the restaurant for serving fresh chunks of apple, orange, and pineapple instead of the standard commercial melon/grape mix. My husband's French toast, made with cinnamon bread and embellished with cream cheese, was unstintingly rich and over-the-top sweet. He said he was still a little hungry but just couldn't eat any more. He polished off the herb-roasted potatoes and shared a couple of bites with me--they were very good. They offered gluten free bread and I also told the kid I was GF and dairy free, so no cheese. He asked if I wanted any condiments and I said no. When I checked the sandwich it was just dry bread and turkey! Not even the 'organic greens' listed in the menu. We stopped across this bakery to gas up and switch drivers for the drive back home. Well, I spotted this bakery and decided to give it a try. Well, there were plenty of pastries to try as well as bread. I asked to sample the raisin walnut bread. It was pretty good but lacking raisins and walnuts in every bite. So, I would have to say I have tasted better like the bakery in Edina next to Lunds and Byerlys. At least, I have to give them credit for having a very large selection which seems to be all homemade. Plenty and seating and it looks like a perfect place to bring your laptop to catch up on work or chat with friends. read more

I'm bummed... the first time I went to Coco, I gave it a very enthusiastic 5 stars! But, unfortunately, every time since has been a less than 5 star experience. I get so excited when I am in the area to try out new things that look and sound delicious. I have tried some of the Coco sandwiches which usually appear amazing by their descriptions in the menu. For example, The Apple Turkey Cheddar Melt: "Turkey, sautéed apples and caramelized onions & Wisconsin cheddar on cranberry walnut bread." Sounds like an incredible combination of flavors. Well, when it was served to me, the cranberry walnut bread, was a very crusty toast, which lacked the flavor of the cranberry walnut combination, and the apples were extremely sparse and nearly flavorless (or completely overpowered by the over-abundance of caramelized onions). Either way, it wasn't close to the deliciousness I had anticipated. One of the most recent times I visited Coco, I was craving a Phenomenal Pumpkin Bar! The bottom was completely black and burnt.... not phenomenal. I love trying out Coco's flavorful apple and pumpkin delicacies this time of year. I was a little nervous about giving the Pumpkin Bar another shot, so I went with the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding. I have to admit, I've been sampling bread pudding products quite a bit over the past month at different establishments, and unfortunately, this one has been my least favorite. Maybe my standards are too high after being so lucky in the bread pudding department as of late. It was good, but not nearly as puddingy as I like. There was just a tiny hint of that pumpkin flavor every once in awhile and way too many chocolate chips for my taste. So, if you like your bread pudding more bready, with way more chocolate chip flavor than pumpkin, you might love it! I know it has the potential to be great again, but for right now I am going to have to reduce my 5 star rating to a 3 star rating. Might seem a bit harsh, but Coco really hasn't been all that phenomenal recently. Hopefully I'll be able to bump it back up to 5 stars sometime in the near future! My original review: Very, very good. I would recommend stopping in if you are in the Washburn, WI area. There were so many amazing looking pastries and sweets, that it took me quite awhile to decide. Not hungry? Just go in and look at the treats, they are presented quite nicely. Maybe you can purchase one and have it for a snack later? I finally ended up narrowing it down to 2. I went with the phenomenal pumpkin bar and a slice of Apple Cider Spiced Tort. They were both really tasty. I wish I could go in more often to indulge in their wares. read more

I was in love before I got my food! I pulled over since I saw a sign for clam chowder and pumpkin pudding. It was everything I hoped it would be. Awesome bread and pastries (I bought a loaf of cranberry wild rice bread), ingredients from local farms, locally roasted coffee and gluten free pastries and bread which they make with flour from a bayfield co farm. The food is well made and unique. The pastries and bread are delicious. I have been going to CoCo' s since they opened and the service has progressively been worse every time. This summer I took my two young children to get a cinnamon roll before we went blueberry picking. I ordered two cinnamon rolls a coffee and two milks. I asked for a side of butter thinking it would be good with the cinnamon roll. I went and sat around the corner with my children where there is a partition separating the dining room from the kitchen. As I sat with my children I heard the woman who took my order making fun of me for ordering a side a butter to another employee. I sat there with my children and listened to them laugh at me. I didn't eat the butter or the cinnamon roll as I was so disgusted and upset. I wish I would have stood up for myself that day. I gave them another chance on Apple Fest weekend. The woman with the curly hair nearly plowed over my Brother In Law and yelled, "Behind!" in his ear. He was holding his young son and had to jump out of her way. That behavior is acceptable in a kitchen, but not in a crowded dining room with customers. When we got up to the counter to order the same woman that nearly ran us over took our order and was extremely rude. I am hoping for a culture change or a turn in staff next season. I would like to go back because of the great food, but the service needs to significantly improve. read more
