We stopped by for a quick lunch on our first day in Bayfield and we're so glad we did! First and foremost, the service was absolutely incredible. I wish I remembered the name of our server because she was so attentive while practically running the front of house by herself, I wish I could give her a specific shout out. The restaurant itself is a classic small town tavern with the dark wood bar, comfy booths, and a gorgeous painted tin ceiling. The food was also pretty good - the cheese curds are a MUST get. The rest of the food was slightly too salty and the fish was just a tad dry but the tartar sauce and coleslaw were both to die for and the fries were fantastic. Overall we enjoyed our time here and would definitely go back.

The Pickled Herring is a really cute spot, it fits the overall age & vibe of Bayfield. It's got huge picture windows facing the lake, so you can watch the boats come & go. Our server was fantastic; she was super attentive & helpful. Our food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, which was really nice. I got a THC cocktail (which they make with Nowadays spirits + mixers) & it was so tasty! We started with cheese curds, which were served with (I think?) house made ranch. They were so crisp & delicious. I also got their fish & fries basket. The fries were really good, with perfectly battered outsides. I will say the whitefish was a bit dry, but the tartar sauce made up for it.

Stopped by here on a recent trip to the area and so enjoyed my experience. Stopped by with a party of 5 for lunch. It was summer tourist season, so we did have to wait a short while (our anticipated wait was 20-30 minutes but we only waited 5-10 in reality). We got our table and ordered drinks. I went for the bbq old fashioned, which was a smoky version of a Wisconsin old fashioned. If you like smokey cocktails, this one's for you. For my main, I got the seasonal salad with ahi added. The ahi was perfectly seared with plenty of pink. The salad was a bed of greens, pesto, burrata, strawberries, and a lovely drizzle of balsamic reduction. For a little crunch, there was toasted pita on the side. It was flavorful and really the best meal of my week in the area. The service was quick and efficient (though not overly friendly). Get to it!

Visited the Pickled Herring for a late lunch/early dinner before an Apostle Islands cruise, since it was right across the street from the docks and rated pretty well. It's definitely a fun place to relax and have a drink or a full meal. I ordered the Hugo Spritz and it was exactly what I was looking for in a cocktail....light and crisp. I ordered the fish sandwich so I could try the local Lake Superior white fish. Blackened was a good choice for how it was cooked. Flaky and juicy...delicious. ibopted for the sweet potato wedges as a side, and wow, were they good and a generous serving. I think I ate the equivalent of two medium sweet potatoes in one sitting...lol. everything tasted great and the staff were very friendly. The dinner seating overlooks Lake Superior, always a plus, and their bar area looks like a fun vibe, too. I would come back. Thanks!

The food was delicious and the view from the deck was even better! While visiting Bayfield we decided to have a late lunch. The two of us shared the Northern Cuban sandwich and an order of their awesome homemade chips. As we enjoyed lunch, we had a great vantage point to watch the ferry and other boats. It was so relaxing!

Stopped in for lunch after a tour of the Apostle Islands. It looked small from the outside, but it was actually larger than it looked. It was around 12:30, so they had a good crowd already, but we were seated right away. Ordered the fish tacos w/mango salsa and homemade potato chips. The mango salsa was so fresh and refreshing on a warm day. It worked perfectly on the fish tacos. We thoroughly enjoyed them.

We came up for Applefest and tried one of their Apple brats. One of the worst things I've ever tasted. One bite and throw it away.

Good food, big portions. Had the whitefish platter for lunch, took half of it home. Great location with a nice view of the lake.

But in…read morethat time, I had my first ever Wisconsin sweet brandy old fashioned in Wisconsin and on top of that the bartender saved my night with some good old-fashioned empathy and barroom advice. It's a long and convoluted story, but I was with my minor child who was on the verge of a panic attack and needed to sit down somewhere, we were caught in a thunderstorm, and it felt like everything in town was closed. Probably because it was. Bayfield isn't exactly a late night town... nor does Uber or Lyft function out this way, despite the respective apps claiming otherwise. Morty's was close by. It was open. And I remembered that in Wisconsin not only can minor's sit at the bar, if they are with their legal parent they can even have a drink. Man, Wisconsin is the best! But the kid just wanted a soda, and I could have used a drink. So an old fashioned for me and a Coke for the kid. I shared our story with the bartender, and she offered some sage guidance. In a few minutes my wife arrived with the car to bring us back to our cabin. But let's hear it for the good old fashioned bar that provides both literal and figurative shelter from the storm. Wish I could have stayed longer, but even in my short time it left an indelible impression.

The service and food is consistently great. Its location is cool - in the middle of the woods. It's comfortable and pretty inside. You're not squished together. The dining room is large and they have a party room they can open up. There's also a large bar on the other end of the building and a patio area. They usually have several specials on the chalk board. I usually get the 1/2 rack of ribs. They are FANTASTIC. Super tender and the sauce is great. I've also had their chicken wings - great! On our most recent trip (the last week and a half) - I had the ribeye special with the loaded baked potato and coleslaw. It was cooked perfectly and super tasty. I left a few toppings off my loaded potato - l had butter, bacon and grilled onions. It was fluffy and delish. They have a nice menu. You can ride your ATV or snow mobile right up to the building or your John Deere tractor (like a customer had when we were visiting ). Tons of Forest service roads/trails all around the area. The bathrooms are clean and accessible. Great food, great owner, great staff - hard working people wanting their customers to have a great experience.
