I like the classics the way they are, so this was a nice place to try, but not something I would necessarily crave. If you like to put a twist in your go to homestyle meals, then this place is worth the try! I will say that the sweet corn biscuit that came with the chorizo and gravy was amazing. If I went back, I would order this. My cousin ordered the chorizo dish. I ended up ordering the cuban toast (aka French toast). I like my french toast to have a nice crust and still hold up well on the inside. For me, the inside was extremely mushy. I did love the flavoring. You could taste a hint of lemon and I'll definitely be using that in my next french toast dish. We also ordered drinks. No complaints here. They also have a craft cocktail menu with a fire and ice drink that was delicious that had jalapeño ice. We tried the croquettes which were fried cheese and chorizo simply just delicious. I had the stew which had beef, duck and plantains and interesting twist on the traditional comfort food. Another person in our party had the shrimp and grits which were also very good. Tonight we had 2 takeout orders of Enchiladas de Pato and an order of Guacamole. I sincerely wish I had a better photo as it doesn't do the food justice. Each serving had three enchiladas with a duck filling as well as green rice and black beans on the side. We ordered the food as takeaway. It was surprisingly good! When I visit Indianapolis I haven't had much luck with takeout. This restaurant is the exception. The Enchiladas were tender, a great level of seasoning and really appealing. The guacamole was pretty spicy with fresh jalapeños and tomato on top. Crisp and salty tortilla chips as well. I'm so happy to have a restaurant where I'll look forward to take out! Because we had a large party (over 8), we had to sign a large party contact. Minimum for food and drinks is $500. Now, for the food and drinks...the food was delicious! Full of flavor and the presentation was beautiful. We started out with apps. We chose the taquitos, queso, civiche, and guacamole. The taquitos had a hint of heat, but perfectly cooked. The queso had lots of flavor, but be sure to eat it quick as it hardens quickly. The seafood on the shrimp was perfect! The guac portion could have been larger, but was tasty. I chose the cazuela de mariscos and it was sooo good. Perfect amount of heat and enough to take home half of it. One of my friends chose the short ribs. She mentioned they were very tender and fire! The drinks were strong, but not over the top. For dessert, we tried the seasonal sorbet. This time was blueberry, which they added granola crumbles. It taste like a blueberry pie. Always came at the perfect time, gave us a great recommendation, and always was refilling our waters. We started each with a drink. I ordered a Fire n I've drink. Perfect amount of spice. My boyfriend ordered a Caribbean old fashioned. It was delicious. Then we were between the ceviche & mussels so we asked our waiter and you could tell it was a tough choice but ultimately suggested the mussels. I am so glad because we love to try mussels everywhere we go and these were very unique! The broth was amazing & they topped it with cheesy bread. It was to die for. It also had bits of chorizo in it. The bit was time for our main course. I ordered the empanadas. It was outstanding. Definitely on the heavier side so beware as I had to take the whole other one to go. The rice was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend ordered their Corvina Veracruz which was a red snapper. The strawberry Habenero was the star. One out of the three salsas is seasonal and I guess this was it! Paired our food with Margaritas and Old Fashioned made with woodford Reserve. It was a fish day for us, all three entrees were fish based! The first one was Romesco Salmon which was hearty grilled salmon with salsa romesco (to die for, very appropriate to summer season!), almond rice, sugar snap peas and grilled spring onion. Didn't leave a speck on plate. The fish tacos with a white fish, not heavily fried, with roasted serrano aioli, pickled red onion, cabbage slaw, stewed black beans and herb green rice. The flavors were excellent and the dish came together very nicely. Beans were my least favorite part but it's me! The third dish was curried coconut mahi. Grilled mahi with chimichurri verde, curried carrot puree, charred asparagus, roasted jalapeño vinaigrette, plantain rice and garlic chips. The front lot holds about 12 cars and a big sign points to additional parking in the rear. It's a one lane alley to a very tiny lot so don't get stuck or get into an accident trying to get back out when there are no spaces available! I wound up parallel parking about two blocks down on College. The interior is boho and we got a booth. The food was very good and the cocktails were tasty and unique. We tried several dishes. I did my best to ignore it but it would've been a 10/10 dish if they substituted that with something else to compliment the other flavors, which were delicious. Churros were fire. The mediocre, instead of the supply of chips and salsa like lesser Mex rest's they sold chips with 3 types of sauce with only one being interesting (the creamy chipotle). The guac appetizer with pecans was good. My wife couldn't drink the margarita (I agreed and sent it back). First time ever anywhere. Something was off with whatever their special margarita mix is. Replaced it with a nice normal Bloody Mary.. I order a shot of lower shelf tequila (aged tequila bores me) and was charged for Anejo. (I have a couple of bottles at home). We left stuffed. The short version of my 3 rating is simply that our experience was not a great value for the cost. On the positive side, they do have their own parking available, with spots both in front of the building as well as accessible via a narrow lane to a lot behind the building. We were fortunate to get the last spot available in back. The restaurant wasn't packed, so I'm guessing these go quickly, especially if folks drive solo after work to meet up. We started with the Queso Fundido ($15), but vegetarian style as my wife does not eat meat. We have had this dish several times at Cholita and love it. On style/appearance, it is a 5 star as it comes out bubbling hot and looks amazing. I thought it tasted fine, but my wife who loves cheese didn't love the combination of cheeses used. She also wasn't a fan of the chips, being a tad bland. I ordered the Fish Tacos ($23). I believe there were 2 tacos in the order (it was a week ago and my memory is not the steel trap it once was). I thought they were good as the corn tortillas were well done and the fish was a decent portion. The side of beans and rice were just OK. The rice seemed pretty dry, so I added it to the beans because they had an excess of liquid. I've definitely had better on both. My wife ordered the Enchiladas de Verduras ($24), which she very much liked. She thought it was a nice blend of vegetables and flavors. Overall, the food was fine. Service was just OK. Neither of these components from our isolated experience were in the ballpark for warranting the price point of the menu.
