That means the disrespect comes directly from the top. He was happy to accept our money at 10:50, but twenty minutes later treated us like garbage he needed removed. Good food cannot compensate for an owner who shows this much contempt toward his own customers. There are plenty of taco restaurants in Orlando run by people who understand basic manners and appreciate your business. Spend your money at one of them. When I moved back to Florida from Northern California a few years ago, one of the things I missed…read morewas an L&L Hawaiian Barbecue--basically, a fast food place that does Hawaiian "plate lunches" like kalua pork, katsu chicken, and loco moco, all served with a scoop of white rice and a scoop of macaronia salad--less than a mile from my house. Moa Kai in Orlando is less a version of L&L than what you'd get if L&L was a full service restaurant with more elevated versions of those dishes--and a full bar. I've been to Moa Kai a few times now, and I've tried their grilled shoyu chicken, their kalua pork and cabbage, the "local style" fried saimin (a noodle dish), the Spam fried rice and, of course, the Spam musubi. (If you've been to a Hawaiian place before, you expect the Spam; if you haven't, put aside what you're imagining and give it a try.) It's all been great. I'm a huge fan of kalua pork--theirs is terrific, although the cabbage sometimes seems a little overcooked--but the fried saimin is a real standout. The service has always been pleasant and extremely fast, despite the fact that they're always busy. (This is a change from the previous restaurant in this space, the Mongolorian Barbecue, which shared partial ownership with Moa Kai. I liked the Mongolorian, but this is a more than worthy trade.) And, yes, the ambiance is very much "busy diner": pleasant and cheerful, although not quiet and relaxing. The original cocktail list is short but terrific. The Koa & Kane is a rum riff on the old fashioned, complex and sweet without being cloying, and their Mai Tai is very close to the original 1930s version--with a more truly Hawaiian addition of passion fruit foam.
