Deke's can take an order. They can not fill the order. I ordered 2 bagel sandwiches at 8:47 am and at 10:05 I still did not have them! The 2 orders in dying of me were for a dozen assorted bagels! They couldn't fill that order! If I would have know I could have ordered from my house then drove the hour... and who knows if I would have gotten my order! There wasn't anyone at the window to even talk to! I will never go there again! Horrible service! They don't deserve the 1 star I had to Give to post this review. read more

Disappointing. Perhaps my expectations were high after driving by there numerous times, and seeing a line out the door but... I ordered a rosemary lox bagel ($12.75 plus taxes and tip, which the most expensive Lox bagel sandwich I purchased in the area to this day) and a cup of plain black coffee (if you like your coffee to taste watery, you'll be in heaven). The counter girl misheard me and charged me over $30 for the breakfast, and then processed to tell me that she made a mistake and will be refunding me the excess. She didn't offer me a receipt as proof of the future refund, so I hope she actually took care of it... The bagel itself? Not toasted, underwhelming hints of rosemary, and tasted so salty, it felt like someone may have messed up the measurements during the baking process. The lox toppings? I was happy to find all the fixings, and that both onions and capers made it into the sandwich (not all shops do both). However, the excess brine from the capers seeped into the cream cheese and bagel and made the sandwich overwhelmingly salty and good for the compost bin. Would I give this place another try and recommend it? No, and that's mostly because the price point, wait-time and quality of the product simply don't align. This was the slowest bagel store I have ever been in. There were 6 people in front of me and it took me 20 minutes to get in and out. Not only was it slow but at 9 am they barely had any bagels left. This place would not survive in NY. They seemed to have one person taking orders, one person working on a tablet (I think for online orders) and one person making the orders. They had someone making bagels but at a speed I would only call casual. I had a simple order 2 everything bagels with butter (they were out of plain and egg), and a sesame bagel with cream cheese none of the bagels to be toasted. Somehow the person making the orders cut all 3 bagels but when she handed me the bag she left one bagel cut but not buttered on the counter. The bagels were ehh. I have had worse but they just weren't good. Not only weren't they good but for some reason bagel stores outside of NY refuse to cut bagels into 4 pieces. These guys came to the local farmers market. We had one last week, the garlic, and it was to die for! I toasted it at home and it was still chewy on the inside, flavorful and just amazing. My only qualm was some of the bagels outside (outside market) were left uncovered so we noticed flies on a particular flavor. No jalapeno-cheddar or cinnamon raisin which are the ones my spouse wanted- so no bagels for him as he didn't want to eat any of the others. I went to pick the bagels up & to the store's credit, they were honest that they did not have the bagels we ordered (though they told me they added extra Asiago & extra cheddar bacon instead- they did not) & they did throw in some free dirt bombs (delicious) & did not charge for the cream cheese- which was exceedingly kind of them, but we still got a bunch of bagels we don't want & won't/didn't eat. For your reference- the French toast bagels are delicious when eaten right after purchase, but no matter how carefully wrapped, overnight something happens to the sugar & it gets melty & sticky & turns the bagel into a brick- it's weirdly wet & also completely impossible to bite into, so 3 of those got tossed. The 2 mystery bagels also got tossed after we tried them. So out of 14 bagels we purchased, 5 of them went straight into the bin- a waste of food & money. I would be willing to excuse it if this were the first time this happened, but we've literally ordered from them twice & did not get what we ordered twice. We do not live near Deke's so have to drive to pick up the bagels & honestly, not sure it's worth it to try again, which is really sad because as I said above- delicious bagels. But they are only delicious if they are the bagels you actually want to eat. If we try again & the order is correct, we will amend back to 4 stars. Food is a 5/5 IF they do it right. I went the past 3 days. First day great experience. Second day I got 2 bagels and only ate half of one because they put next to no cream cheese on it. So was a 2/5. Third time food was great. However, on the third day I waited for 45 minutes. I was never told that there would be a wait! Let alone 45 MINUTES FOR ONE BAGEL. I understand if you are understaffed but you have to tell people a wait time. This ruined my day and messed up my work. Love the bagels and baked goods at Deke's. Options usually consist of 8+ varieties of bagels, cinnamon rolls, 2-3 muffins, 2-3 donuts and coffee cake. Deke also sells locally roasted Ashlawn Farm Coffee. Try the dirt bomb which is a muffin disguised behind a sugary, cinnamon crust. The cinnamon rolls are so good my wife usually offers to leave 'us' alone while I am eating one. My only complaint is that they get wild busy during Summer months. We have been to Deke's a few times but it has been a while with COVID. They also deliver to certain places for resale. Recently we stopped on a Saturday morning and found a line outside. They have stepped up their game. Great variety, classic chewy bagels. The shoreline has some good bakeries and breakfast stops but few truly good bagels. Dekes is very good. While there was a line and some slight order confusion with a few patrons the service was fast and friendly. This is worth the trip. Exit 72 off of 95 and a short ride. I am a fan of the classics- poppy, sesame etc but they have some interesting varieties including spinach feta and artichoke, French toast, and blueberry pie bagels. Also I had a very nice cheddar and scallion biscuit that I could have saved for dinner. read more

I love bagels and am always looking for good ones. Deke's has some interesting flavors, like bacon egg and cheese and one with olive and salt that was tasty. I didn't care for the onion which are my go to an any bagel shop. The onion bits on top were very dry and had an odd taste. I prefer New York style bagels and these lack that distinctive chew. Also, the price of $18 for a dozen bagels is very expensive. I usually pay between $9-$13 a dozen or baker's dozen at other shops, even though those shops also charge more than a dollar for a single bagel. They were like a home cook's first try with the wrong combination of baking and boiling leading to a collapsed, doughy, tasteless brick. The bottom caked with corn meal. They were also handled sloppily. My plain had onion all over it and my wife's everything had a jalapeño stem in it. We enjoy the bagels and the baked goods. However, how can you be a bagel shop and not allow someone to order a dozen bagels or even a half dozen bagels? We have a family of 5 and always want to buy them when we have company over and we can never get enough for everyone in the family. One time I even called the day before at 10:30 to order them for the next day and left a vm (so odd that this is the process) to order them and someone called me back and said the cut off was 10:00am for the next day. When I tried to ask them a question about it they just hung up on me. Also, the coffee often has grinds in it. We miss the days when Frankie was there and the customer service was off the charts. Deke's is not bad but it's not anything to rave about either. It satisfies my bagel craving but I never leave thinking "damn, that bagel was really worth standing around awkwardly in a tiny space with locals". I'm giving three stars because I'm hurt that they have gotten rid of taylor ham and replaced it with regular ol deli ham. Not to mention the ratio of the bacon/ham, egg, and cheese is just so off. There is never enough of the basic bagels. When I did get an everything bagel it was so much of the seasoning that made it disgusting. I understand that we are on the shoreline but that was just ridiculous. The bigger issue was that the food was terrible. I really wanted to love this bagel spot, I really did. The store itself is cute and welcoming. The bagels are beautiful and they have a large variety of options from savory to sweet. I always tend to gravitate towards an everything bagel when I first try one somewhere. I feel as though that is like the quintessential bagel and that its a good place to start when trying something. My everything bagel with bacon, egg and cheese was alright. I didn't love really anything about it. Not saying at all that the bagel was bad it just wasn't great. Waited 10 minutes in line to order this Sunday around 11:00am. Two toasted bagels with cream cheese, one with tomato added. There were about 8 customers who order before us. There were at least 8 people inside and I cannot figure out what they were doing because it wasn't making orders. There were hardly any orders coming to the window. No one offered any explanation, time estimate, or apology. Awful customer service. Then insult to injury, someone who was 3 people behind us got their order with an egg and bacon sandwich before us! Not sure how a simple toast, spread, cut, wrap, hand off got so dysfunctional. Oh wait: when we got the bagels, they were tough and cold. They seemed to have been toasted and then sitting on the counter. And mine didn't have the tomato I ordered. There's no excuse to have such poor service times when it's all to-go. Been going to Dekes since they first opened but I'm done after the last three times. Prepare to wait half an hour or more for a simple toasted bagel and then double check your order since they can't seem to get that right. The last straw was me ordering 4 uncut not toasted bagels to go. Simple enough right? Wrong. I waited about 40 minutes with a bunch of other customers who had to continuously check on their order since it was taking so long. I finally went up to the counter to see what was going on. I mean all they had to do was throw for bagels into a bag and I'm on my way. Nope. Woman at the counter told me they didn't have any of the types of bagels I ordered left...ummm what I ordered what I was told was available. How long were you going to wait to tell me! WTF. Holy Cow! Completely unexpected shoreline gem. Bagel flavors are amazing and unexpected like cranberry orange, salted Olive Rosemary Bagel, Butternut Bacon, Apple Pie --so light and fluffy! Cream cheese flavors are amazing like Nutella, carmelized onion Gorgonzola was DELICIOUS! I couldn't get enough. The egg sandwiches were incredible light and delicious. Loved this place. If we were inside I would not mind pretending the mask matters but they make you order outside and then have everyone use the same computer and touch screen to pay but don't bother sanitizing that.
