Had my first experience here today with my boyfriend and I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on their everything bagel. It was delicious and full of flavor. I also had a moist and gooey chocolate chip cookie that melted in my mouth. The service was warm and efficient. They were even playing good music to sing to while waiting for your order. Some days my sandwich is spot on...and when it is...SO GOOD. Other days it's missing cheese, hash browns etc. online app is a pain in the bum...build your sandwich just the way you want it...go to checkout and if the bagel is not in stock rather than asking if you'd like another selection...it deletes the entire sandwich. Horrible customer service. They require everyone to wear masks yet everyone has to stand outside to place an order. Everyone is more than 6ft away from each other and everyone is outside. Furthermore, they require you to pay with their computer system which everyone has to touch to sign with their finger - however, this computer is never cleaned between customers. Deke's is honestly some of the best bagels I have ever had. Growing up in New England I've had my fair share of bagels for. Living in Niantic in the summers I've realized there are almost no bagel places. Deke's not only has amazing and crazy bagel and cream cheese flavors but their customer service is amazing. We were visiting the area after spending the past few days in NYC. While in the city, we tried one of its most famous bagel places and I have to say the bagels from Deke's were better. I stopped at Deke's shortly after 8am on a busy Sunday morning (Mother's Day) desperate for coffee and willing to keep an open-mind about Connecticut bagels. The line seemed long so I poured myself a self-serve coffee for the wait. This turned out to be a good call because the line moved slowly with what I assume were large Mother's Day orders, slowly enough for me to finish most of my 16 oz. coffee. The cashier was very warm and friendly. I ordered a toasted garlic bagel with veggie cream cheese. After a 10-15 minute wait, the bread product I received was something that I would have been pleasantly surprised to find in basket of dinner rolls, (light and fluffy with nice garlicky flavor) but it was not something I would describe as a "bagel." As I understand them, bagels should have a firm, chewy crust that should not easily yield. The crust on the Deke's bagel was much thinner, more like a brioche. The flavor of both the bagel and the cream cheese were good. It was tasty in the same way that the cheesy tomato casserole they call "pizza" in Chicago is tasty, my issue in both cases is whether it belongs in the genre it claims to represent. Despite the long wait and my philosophical differences with their approach to bagels, everyone working there was very friendly. That stuff matters too. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I am sitting down with my order at home and it appears that they got the order wrong on top of everything. I ordered six of the exact same breakfast sandwiches and they got it wrong. That isn't the worst of it. The owner treated customers worse than I have ever seen. The owner apparently got the order for the person behind me wrong. Instead of just correcting it, before charging the guy, he insulted him and made him stand by and let other people go. Who does this? You misheard the order so just fix it and ring up the right order. Don't argue with the customer, you didn't even start making the order yet. It gets better, the person next in line got yelled at by the owner because they were pointing at a bagel and got too close and almost touched it. This place was hot with flies all over and you are going to yell at a customer for ALMOST touching a bagel? Once both of those customers left and I was still waiting for my large order, he proceeded to talk trash about them where I could hear. All in all, the owner is horrible and can't get orders right and they treat customers horribly. Stay away from this place. read more

I really tried to like Deke's, getting breakfast here for three consecutive days while staying in the area. The store itself is great; they have nice outdoor seating and beautiful wood furnishings. The counter service is friendly, though the ladies preparing the food always seemed angry about something. The bagels just aren't that great, sadly. They're on the small side and they lack flavor (is there even any salt in them?) and every bagel I tried tasted overcooked, even burnt-tasting, especially the onion (the flakes on top were basically black!). The texture is off-putting as well--they're very hard on the outside and the inside is strangely cake-like. The breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg, and cheese) didn't help the bagel experience. If you fry an egg, you should season it! Oddly enough, the sweet section of baked goods were quite good! The maple scone and pecan rolls were very tasty. But the bagels, for which they are known, need work, or love, or something! Mainly flavor. I would choose Cohen's Bagels (and the several places they're sold) every time over these. read more

I recently learned about this bagel shop in my town, and am SO HAPPY that I did! I stopped here this morning at approximately 7:30 to try out the bagels. I was not expecting the variety of bagels, cream cheese spreads, or options for sandwiches when I arrived, so it took me a couple of minutes to make my decision! I decided to go with a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on an everything bagel, and Oh my goodness, I may never have a breakfast sandwich anywhere else again! The sandwich was made fresh to order, and the bagel was absolutely delicious. As I put in my order, about 10 more people came in behind me - this clearly is a very popular place for breakfast in the morning, so I recommend getting there early! I want to like this place honestly, but something is just off. I will say that I lived in NYC and am definitely a bagel snob, but I try to go into bagel shops in CT with an open mind and low expectations. The bagels themselves, not absolutely terrible or anything. I've been here a few times and so far I like the spinach artichoke one the best. The bagels are decent for CT's standards, as it is difficult to find good bagels around here. However, they run out of every bagel very quickly AND the service is slow. With a place as busy as Deke's, they should make more bagels throughout the day so they can sell more. Their system just seems very unorganized. I had one person in front of me today and it took longer than it should have for just a bagel toasted with cream cheese. They also don't have a pumpernickel bagel which I think is weird for a bagel shop. My biggest problem with this place is the cream cheese honestly. Every time I come here, the cream cheese gets worse. It's like they heavily salt it or something? So you take a bite and it tastes like you're eating a bagel and just creamy salt instead of real cream cheese. I'd rather have regular old Philadelphia cream cheese tbh. I really don't like giving negative reviews to small businesses, but I just feel like a bagel shop should be more efficient than this. Ordered a Taylor pork, egg and cheese this morning on a "soft roll." The roll was stale and far from soft and had an off putting taste. We couldn't eat it. We have given this place many chances but almost every time they mess up our order and the bagels are just mediocre. My wife and I just ordered from Dekes and it was very disappointing. We both ordered a toasted lox bagel with no capers. My wife asked for a wheat everything but ended up getting some kind of nut bagel, which she she can't have, so we had to throw out the bagel. She ended up just eating the salmon plain. She also had a couple of capers on hers, even though we specified no capers. My onion bagel had hardly any salmon and had a bitter aftertaste as if the onion topping was burnt. Furthermore, both bagels were not toasted, we paid over 20 dollars for bagels with barely any salmon and that were prepared wrong. We took the time to drive to Dekes and planned for a meal we looked forward too. This wasn't the experience we got and I could have spent less money elsewhere but gave Dekes a chance. The bagels here are great. They are the perfect amount of crunch to chewy ratio and the flavors are all unique and delicious. The olive rosemary is so good. If i could give this 0 stars I would. Traveling from NY and came across this bagel shop, thought it was going to be decent, considering the amount of people that were there. Unfortunately it was horrible, WAY over priced and food was almost inedible. The BEC was over $6, and tasted like it just came from a microwave. The bagel toasted with butter was over $3 and was soggy. I would never recommend this to anyone. Not to mention extra charges for salt&pepper&butter. Had the BLT on a cheese bagel ..... fantastic so fresh... and the bacon was CRISPY thank the lord no soggy limp bacon here...... the bagel hag a great crust and soft interior the cheese on top was strong enough to taste but didn't overpower the sandwich...... dirt bomb didn't make it out of the building so a few more had to be obtained for further taste testing.....
