Open for 19 years, the small family owned brewery started without the hub bub of the bank and other investors. Through the blood, sweat, and tears, they were able to create an opportunity in Pearl River New York for the locals and non locals like me to enjoy some great drafts and bbq. I tried not to be the excited traveler right at the door, but luckily, Amy, the owner's wife, was willing to take a wayward traveler in to start enjoy their beers right as they opened. They have a book and beer book club to sip and read, cornhorn club and a large beer hall with music to jam out to. With the Full Auto Arena nearby, I would recommend mom chill here while the dads and sons let some steam off or if we all know Mom can show up anyone with some liquor courage. We have been here many times over the last 6 years that we have lived in the area. Defiant recently reduced their brewery space. Beer is decent but the vibe has been off on our last two visits. Both of the last times we have come here the bartenders have been frazzled with very few patrons in the brewery. This past visit was a Friday at happy hour. However, there was some kind of performance in the back, which made the parking lot full. I got the Medusa IPA, which was pretty light and not as hoppy as I was hoping. The place is very large the people behind the bar and the chef who was doing the barbecue were all very nice. The brisket took almost an hour to be ready. However, they warned us that it would take a long time. They were very nice and brought out the other food. In the meantime after 30 minutes of waiting. The food was OK. Yikes. This place had maybe 12 tap lines and only three or four beer options. For example, they have flight offerings, but they don't even offer enough beer for a flight.... There are all these convoluted menu items for different wine or mixed drinks or shots that you don't really see at breweries so I mean It's clear that they are just throwing things at a wall and hoping that something sticks. My Husband and I originally came in because we heard that the barbecue food is really good but a few hours before dinner service would even end we were notified upon arrival that they closed the kitchen because there were no customers.... So we figured we would stay at least for one round. We were the only people in the place on a Saturday night and the one beer that we each got were both not good and for only having three or four beers I would imagine that the ones that you offer should be great.. My friends and I went one night for Trivia Night and had a nice time. We tried one of their ciders to drink and we enjoyed it. We each got a BBQ platter for dinner - I had the smoked brisket and chicken wings on my platter, and it was really good BBQ! I was pleasantly surprised! The one issue I had was when I tried to close our tab, they were implementing a new iPad system (at the time) and either entered my name wrong or something because they couldn't find me to close the tab. They were a little rude in questioning if I had even opened the tab. They also were questioning if I gave the right name or if I gave it at all. It took 20 minutes to get the issue resolved, so it made the great night we had ended on a little bit of a sour note. They are probably more experienced with their iPad system now, but it definitely was a pain when we went. read more

This place is wonderful. I came here by chance while attending a concert. The atmosphere was wonderful. The drinks and food were amazing especially the tacos. I was so happy with the cheese that was in my taco too since it was a unique flavor that I hadn't tasted before but it complimented my taco so well. The young lady who served us was very busy that night since it was the night of a concert but she kept her composure in a busy environment and was very pleasant. Celebrated my brothers 40TH Birthday at Defiant, had so much fun! Huge factory like setting although some parts of the building need a little TLC but overall still a great place to celebrate! The food was AMAZING! Meat was out of this world, and the sides were delicious. Side note, not all macaroni and cheese is good, but defiant s mac is like 5 star for a bbq place. They have a huge beer garden style room with a huge projector tv, and a games to play like darts, or jenga. The most fun I've had on a Thursday night in a while. Came for trivia and was excited to find out about their smokehouse, so I also tried some of the food. The food came out within minutes of ordering as if they had it already made, but sadly it was cold. I got the thick cut bacon, which was tender and very flavorful. I also tried the mac and cheese and a side of cornbread. Everything tasted great, just wish it came out hot or at least warm. The bartender was super nice and patient with me. I explained it was my first time there - so he asked me a few questions about what I like and let me sample a few sips of some brews they had on tap before making a suggestion. Even though he had other customers waiting to be served, he took the time to help me and I really appreciated that. I was also really happy with the choice he helped me make. The space is pretty big, with two large rooms of seating. It gets pretty crowded on Thursday nights for trivia. I love that they also have a huge selection of board games laid out if you wish to play. It's a really great spot for trivia or to come with friends and family. Such a fun time! read more

We popped in on the way to a wedding in jersey. Being huge beer lovers we always are looking for a good place to stop. The beer group I admin recommended it so we had to try. It's a very welcoming space and huge with seats for everyone. They offered to let us try a sample before we ordered a whole beer as we had never been there. My dad had a stout and he enjoyed it. It was toasty and tasty. My partner had an ipa he enjoyed. They have a lot of different brew styles so there is something for everyone. They also have delicious food. I had pulled pork tacos and the meat was very well seasoned and cooked. Also a generous portion. We split wings and nachos and those were good also. Have not been in a long time and the place is huge now. Totally expanded and cavernous with a large back room with tables spaced out for small groups. Also they take cards now! No more fee hungry ATM. Smoked wings were just as I remembered and was able to try the tacos. We got brisket cheesesteak tacos which were loaded and pretty tasty. 3.5 stars This brewery is the biggest I've seen in our area. There were some birthday parties going on in their back area but there was still ample space by the bar. Mike or better known as Dreads helped us pick out some beers. Some hit or misses but a varied menu for every palate. They have IPAs, all different Belgian styles, hefeweizen and stouts. We got some BBQ to pair with our brews but it was just ok. The meats were not as juicy as I like em. Sigh I miss Reillys Ribcage. Cash only! So come prepared. They have a parking lot so pretty easy to find parking unless there's an event. read more

We decided to elope to Scotland but throw a party for our friends and family when we got home and chose Defiant as the venue for doing so - it was more perfect than I could have imagined. Erin and her team achieved the most perfect low key fun party night we had dreamed of. The space is beautiful and large enough for big parties. The food was plentiful and delicious. Days later, we are still getting texts and calls from our guests raving about how much fun they had at the "best wedding ever" with the "most amazing food [they've] ever had at a wedding." If you want to let loose and have fun with your guests, do not hesitate and book Defiant immediately. First time to Defiant brewing but have been to many other breweries. Theres was a nice selection of beers and I loved the adominable snowman beer it was delicious. I tried the cranberry ginger seltzer which was also great. We ordered some smoked meats which were good. The mac and cheese just needed more seasoning. The homemade pickles were great. There was plenty of socially distanced seating we were just very cold sitting in the front of the place. Everyone had on masks including the staff. read more

My go-to spot when I want to have some local BBQ! They have a ton of beers on tap. One of my favorite beers is their Belgian tripel. The brisket chili side wasn't my favorite, it wasn't as thick as chili's usually are but still was good. My favorite sides are the mac&cheese and the potato salad (however they were out of potato salad the night that I went). The ribs, smoked wings, brisket and pulled pork are all delicious. There are even benches outside which is nice if you still don't feel comfortable dining inside due to Covid, or if you just want some fresh air. read more

We met up with friends on a Friday night around 6 PM for drinks. We sat outside for a while and had drinks. The beer list is fairly solid and I appreciated the distinction between normal and high octane beers. The pumpkin seasonal was my favorite, some of the IPAs were just too floral for me. We were getting hungry and ordered food. In the process of waiting for our food, we went inside to get away from the cold. The food takes a while to get there and the place becomes increasingly busy. By the time we finished the dinner, it was hard to get the staff's attention. On the food, miss. The wings and ribs were highly recommended to us and we chose those, with mac and cheese and coleslaw. The wings and ribs were the way to go. We had wanted to order more wings, but when our friend asked the waitress how the kitchen situation was, she said it was crazy and backed up. That says it all. The mac and cheese was a huge letdown. The inside core wasn't warm and it tasted quite bland. The cornbread is fine, nothing memorable like the coleslaw. Service was great at times and haphazard at other times. The waitress went to check on us as we were wrapping up the dinner and took the items from us. We hadn't quite finished and made a quick grab for the mac and cheese and coleslaw before she took it away (we were hungry after all, especially since we weren't getting anything else.) Great local brewery. Location is pretty on point! It's right next to a train station, local bars and restaurants. The inside was huge! The brewery is nicely decorated and definitely adds to the chill atmosphere. The only downside is that this place is cash only. I never have cash on me so I thought that was an inconvenience. Thank god my friend had cash on her and was able to spot me. They do have a good handful of craft beers to choose from. I had never even heard of Defiant Brewery until one of my boyfriend's friends decided to have his birthday there one Sunday night (the night that the Giants lost embarrassingly to the Packers). I don't know if they have any brewery tours there, which is what I would normally be interested in, but I spoke to one of the employees there and they said they brew all of their beer on premises. I tried 2-3 of the beers (can't remember which ones but it was the darker and/or higher ABV ones) and I liked them all. Plus, they had pretty good BBQ food, which I did not expect at all. We got the platter that serves around 15 people, which came out to around $30 pp. It had a good variety of things - ribs, wings, beans, mac and cheese, cole slaw, potato salad corn bread. However, all of their meat items seemed to be seasoned with the same spices/sauce so if you don't like the flavor of one thing, you probably won't like the rest.
