My sister in law typically orders from here for her and the kids' gluten free and (previous) vegan desserts, and its always a hit! As my nephews and niece were growing, they were experiencing different food allergies and sensitivities, and Dee's One Smart Cookie has been a consistently delicious and safe option for them to explore. The cakes are also beautifully designed, and our family has had no issues with pick up, or following instructions with serving. Highly recommend!
Very patient staff, willing to answer any and all questions. This place is worth the drive if you have any food allergies. Tons of goodies to choose from. The bread loaves, oh my goodness, ACTUAL BREAD SIZE! That's a win! Regardless if it's vegan or not, the flavor is there! You can't wrong with anything you choose.
Let me start by saying the cake ended up being delicious. However, the service from the employees and the owner was awful and disappointing. The talking back to the customer, the rude tones and faces.... were all very upsetting. My sister has ordered my mother a cake from this shop for her birthday every year. My sister passed away in Nov. and I called to order it this year myself to keep the tradition. While ordering, the employee was rude on the phone. Fast forward to the day I pick it up, my cake looked nothing like the image I had sent over. While I know I asked for a smaller cake than shown in the image example, different piping tips could have been used to mimic the same thinner style. Similarly, the colors were very off, designs were added that were not requested, and the dollops around the top of the cake were missing. See images attached of the example vs. what I got.... I have years of bakery experience and I am very well aware that cakes like this require particular ingredients for allergies. What I don't understand is why I was told the frosting could not be any darker or thinner, when I have done that several times by myself (in a vegan bakery) with the same restrictive ingredients. After going to my car, I showed my friend what the cake looked like and her eyes widened. She was in complete shock at how awful the decor was for a SIXTY DOLLAR 6" cake... Regardless of it being gluten free, I have never paid that much in my life for a 6" cake especially with such bad decorations and piping. But my mom is used to these cakes, so I went on my way. As soon as I pulled out, I regretted leaving and called back to see if I could get it fixed before my mom's surprise lunch. I was unsure if they would redo their mistakes since I had already left the building, but they took it back to fix since it was not what was asked for. I received a text later that it was fixed and ready to pick up. I thanked them for the efforts to fix it, despite it still not looking how I hoped it would regarding colors and sizing of the design. When the owner took it upon herself to text me back personally, she was quite rude. She stated that she is sure my baking experience didn't have the additional constraints her shop faces, even though that is a wild assumption and it is not true... She went on to lecture me on how natural food coloring works and said how they are the reason why she couldn't make my cake similar to the image I requested. She also said I had an "apparent expectation of it being an exact replica" and that with their size and ingredient constraints, that is "not possible". I had no expectation of the cake being an exact replica. That is not realistic when the cakes are different sizes and etc. However, I personally feel the original and redo cakes I got were not even close to the image I provided regarding coloring and decor overall. I will not be returning for my mom. I will not be returning to buy dozens of pastries for my work events anymore, and my friends and family will not be returning either after seeing how I was spoken to and how poor the quality of my cake was.
Wow! The selection is amazing. Allergen friendly. Gluten free. Vegan. Wow. They post their menu on Facebook every day, so you can check there to be prepared. They have a huge case of baked goods- all gluten free. Plenty of vegan options as well. They also have savories like soups and pastas. We ended up getting a sampling of pastries- many things I haven't found since developing allergies, and some pasta. They have gluten free frozen tortellini and mozzarella sticks! The pastries were fantastic! I loved the whoopie pie! They also have a thanksgiving menu, things that may typically be harder to find gluten free and vegan!
I recently noticed Dee's great Yelp rating and visited while in the area. The shop is cute and they had a lot of baked goods. I was the only customer there, but the shop was vibrant. I assume they must have been working to get orders ready. In any event, service was friendly and efficient. A specialty of Dee's is gluten, allergen and dairy desserts. My family doesn't have any of these concerns, but I'm always curious to see what places can do when they don't use ingredients that many other places use. I bought four cupcakes for the family. I tried the carrot cake. It was flavorful. The icing was denser than I prefer and the cupcake itself tended to separate in a way that I'm not used to. I assume the use of gluten, allergen and dairy-free ingredients contributes to that. Perhaps I'm not the best person to judge how these desserts compare to other gluten free places, but Dee's is clearly a well loved place, makes beautiful desserts, provides outstanding customer service and provides a product that many of my friends value because of their dietary needs. I would recommend checking out Dee's, especially if you have such dietary needs. Four Stars.
I went for a carrot cake cup cake and a lemon bar. Both were very good. Size was small though. Price was high for the quantity. You can park your car and wait in the car. They will come to your car and take order, which was very nice.
Good stuff! Now, fortunately I don't suffer with any food allergies but I had it on good authority that this place was good. I usually cringe when someone tells me something is (name your ingredient) free as it usually tastes way off. And, I do have a bad sweet tooth. I totally believe in supporting local businesses and given these circumstances, I could fill a sweet tooth AND support a local business. Am I a hero? Perhaps, but I digress... Ordered a few doughnuts and cupcakes and, let me tell you, they were delicious. Nothing like I was expecting... I thought it was going to be flavorless and hard and it couldn't be the opposite. The blueberry doughnut was about as (sorry, folks) moist as could be. The blueberries were plentiful, which I love as it's one of my favorite fruits. During this crisis, you call ahead and place your order and they'll bring it to your car once you pull in. They have menus outside in case you aren't sure what they have or haven't checked out their social media pages. Check them out and you can be a hero, too! :)
Ive been looking for a organic/vegan friendly bakery and Dee's popped up in Glastonbury. They offer tons of breads and baked goods that all looked amazing. I ended getting the morning glory bar, a few cupcakes and some blonde brownies. Everything was terrific, nothing was too sweet and I didn't feel heavy eating the items afterwards. The Blonde Brownies are fantastic. Popped them in my air fryer and topped them with ice cream..... HEAVEN!! If you're in the area, stop in and check them out. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks to Dee's my Uncle's Birthday Cake was a success. It was Gluten Free to meet the dietary requirements of many of my family members. When asked what kind of cake he wanted for his 90th Birthday my Uncle said the same thing I said as a child. "I want Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Icing!" The cake certainly fit the requirements. I'm sorry I didn't get a photo of the inside or the huge slice I greedily took! The Chocolate Layers had a hint of Raspberry. So yes it was delicious! Yes I enjoyed it. Did I still complain about gluten free? Ugh, yes.... I'm sorry but it's heavy on the stomach for me. I'm not a fan of dense chocolate cake. That doesn't mean you would have that problem. I prefer a lighter fluffy cake with flour and whatever makes it light and fluffy!! I will say everyone else said they enjoyed it. I certainly did while I was eating it. Whether my family has used this bakery before I didn't ask. Whether they will again, I don't know. I just know for this occasion it was just what was needed! There was only a sliver left when we got through. It served at least 40 people.
Quantia helped me this am. I really love excellent customer service with kindness. Someone who is present when they help you. Quantia definitely was present and kind today. Rather your a vegan or carnivore the bake goods are excellent at Dee's.
2/5 for the donuts, 3/5 overall A few other patrons inside around 11AM on a Saturday. Pros: -Lots of GF/DF options Cons: -Donuts are not very similar to what you would expect from the world of gluten -Pricey ($2.25/donut) -- Zebra Donut Chocolate cake donut with a thick chocolate frosting and a vanilla drizzle. These donuts are thick, a bit chewy, and a little dry. They're somewhat reminiscent of a Hostess Donette. I wouldn't say they're bad, but they definitely do not imitate a yeast or cake donut made with gluten. (Currently, the best GF donuts I've tried have been the GF cake donuts from Kane's Donuts in Saugus/Boston, MA). This was the better of the two donuts we tried. "Old Fashioned" Donut Vanilla donut with a cinnamon frosting. I'm not sure why this donut is called "old fashioned" because it doesn't look like a true old fashioned donut (with the jagged edges) or taste like it (with a crispy exterior, soft interior). This donut has the same texture as the Zebra and overwhelmingly tastes like cinnamon. We also tried a Blueberry Muffin and a Coffee Cake, both of which were better than the donuts. The muffin in particular was my favorite because the texutre is strangely reminiscent of edible cookie dough. Odd, but I'm into it!
We love Dee's and are so grateful to have an allergy friendly bakery not to far from us we make the drive 1-3x a week to get special treats for myself and the kids. We've order countless cakes and goodies over the years and they always go above and beyond making you feel welcome and bringing your cake ideas to life in a fun way. When you walk in your almost always greeted with a smile and warm welcome. Everything is set up nicely and it's always clean. We are life long customers now!
Went for a specialty day (PJs for free donut). We got two free donuts for our two girls dressed in pjs. The donuts are delicious and vegan friendly! We also got a French toast crueler. It was super yummy! The employees welcomed and said hi to all that came in!
Dee's is without a doubt one of the best bakeries around. It specializes in gluten free baked goods, and makes them so well it doesn't seem like they are!! I went to Dee's for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised by the amount and selection of baked goods and the kindness of the staff. Everything is made daily. (Check out the Dee's Facebook page to see what they've mixed up that day--the pictures will entice you to go and will make your mouth water!!) They offer a wide range of treats, from unique flavor cupcakes to cookies and bars to pizza. The coconut pineapple cupcake--top with a slice of pineapple--was so delicious and light. The tastes of each treat are just enough and do not overwhelm you. The blondies, filled with a hint of dark Belgian chocolate bits, melt in your mouth. They are so, so good!! You definitely must try one. I haven't had a blondie that has tasted so delicious and is so light!! Everything is so fresh and so delicious. It is all made with natural ingredients and leaves you feeling good after you treat yourself!! The staff at Dee's is simply wonderful. They are extremely kind and very hardworking. When I went in for the first time last week, several of the staff welcomed me as soon as I walked in, quickly helped get my cupcakes, and helped me to check in on their app (Perka). (This app allows you to accumulate points to use for more treats in the future--a great reward system!!) As you pay for your treats, you can see right into the kitchen, with the cooks mixing together goodies. The quality of the baked goods is simply outstanding, as is the staff. I absolutely enjoy going to Dee's, with its fresh and light treats and its fantastic service. read more

Look no further for the best gluten free and allergen free treats in the area. I am at Dees once a week, their apple cider and blueberry donuts are my personal favorite! I enjoy their special treats they make and they are always so informative with any questions that I have. The staff is wonderful! And the treats top it off. I have not tried anything that I did not like- muffins, bars, cupcakes, breads, they do it all! read more

I crave Dee's donuts all the time. These donut flavors are blueberry, strawberry-chocolate, French toast, and zebra. So delicious! Beyond the donuts, they have a great selection of tasty treats. So glad they are vegan friendly. Can't wait to to order a cake from them soon! read more

We discovered Dee's One Smart Cookie almost 7 years ago and fell in love. Fast forward 7 years and they made our wedding cake! They were so kind, patient and responsive during our wedding planning and postponement (due to COVID). Our cake was absolutely perfect and delicious, we can't wait to order our next treat from Dee's! read more

I finally had a chance to stop here as I was passing through Hartford this past weekend! This all GF bakery (no chance of contamination, as the staff aren't even allowed to bring outside food into the establishment) is just off the highway in an adorable little house-like building (plenty of parking). The inside is small, but well-organized, making it easy to maneuver around. They offer baked goods (cupcakes, muffins, breads, cakes, bagels, etc) and to-go items like pizza and soup. Keep in mind, Dee's is not vegan, but they do offer a wide range of egg-free items (all items are dairy, soy, nut and GMO free). I found their prices were on par with other bakeries offering niche items, and the staff was very warm, friendly, and helpful! What I got (all vegan/egg-free): 1. Cake pop... the cake pop was vanilla cake, coated in chocolate and rainbow sprinkles. It was good! 2. Belgian chocolate chunk cookies... I personally loved the texture and taste of these a lot, though I'm not sure those who aren't used to GF baking would enjoy them as much as I did. 3. Blondie... I really liked the blondie bar. It was soft, rich and melt-in-your-mouth yummy! 4. Red velvet cupcake... Egh. The one thing I wasn't fond of. Cupcakes are my favorite, and I just didn't like this. I ate it, of course, but found the flavor odd-tasting. 5. Peach oatmeal bar... Very good! If I was closer to home, I would have loved to experiment with heating it up! 6. Banana muffin... The muffin was probably my favorite item. The texture and taste were both on point, and adding a bit of my coconut butter that I had on hand in the car really put it over the top! Would I make the 2.5 hour drive for Dee's alone? No (there are too many options here in the NYC area), but if I'm ever driving through Hartford again, I will definitely stop in for some treats! Thanks again :) read more

Let me preface this review with the fact that I'm a baked goods enthusiast. I have high standards for my desserts. Between the quality of the cakes and the excellent customer service I received, I would absolutely go back here (and only here!). I ordered three different medium sized cakes for a large party. The woman working behind the counter guided me towards some GREAT options based on what's popular and what they recommend. The decorations were simple (I asked for this) yet elegant and beautiful. People were asking us all night where the cakes were from. I could not have been happier!! read more

I just wanted to begin my review by stating that the customer service is excellent. The reason behind my ghastly 2-star rating is simply taste. Don't get me wrong, Dee's One Smart Cookie sells baked goods w/ fresh, high quality ingredients. Unfortunately, the taste of vegan baked goods is incredibly blah for me so I will not be returning to this establishment. read more
Mom has an unusual condition - lactose intolerance combined with an intense love for butter-creme icing. This combination has not boded well for birthdays and other big life events that are celebrated with cake. We've tried dairy-free cakes from bakeries all over Connecticut whose products were all good... but all of those bakeries eventually went out of business. Then we discovered Dee's which has been in business for YEARS catering to those with unusual dietary issues. Glastonbury is an hour-long drive for us, each way, and the cakes are expensive, so we were concerned it could be a lot of trouble for little benefit. But Mom was worth the risk. And I am happy to say it was WORTH every minute and dollar! The staff was friendly and helpful, walking us thru the ordering process. (There are no limitations on flavor combinations, unlike all the other bakeries we've dealt with!) Decorations were no problem and no extra cost. And most importantly, Mom is RAVING about how much she loves the cake and is cherishing every single bite. I highly recommend Dee's to anyone with dietary restrictions! read more

I've been going to Dee's for years now and they never disappoint me. I have celiac disease and am also allergic to dairy and soy. I have never, ever gotten sick from them. And I have gotten my birthday cakes from them for the past few years now. Their food never disappoints me. My boyfriend and I had a joint birthday party yesterday and we had a cake made for the both of us with chili peppers decorating the top of it. Not only was the cake beautiful, but it tasted amazing as well. I will always look at Dee's as the best gluten free bakery in CT. read more

All I can say about this place, is wow!! I was traveling through CT and googled gluten free places and this place came up! It wasn't far off my path so I stopped in on a Friday and it was like winning the lotto.. they had pizza.. which any celiac knows is hard to find a good one. I bought the non vegan cheese one so it just had veggies and I literally ate 3/4 of it in my car in the parking lot.. fantastic!!! I also bought the vegan bread and a vegan blondie.. this is one of the rare experiences where you buy gluten free and vegan and it's actually amazing. Thank you so much for having this business.. I wish I could have bought more but I was traveling and had limited space in my cooler but I will 120% be back! Don't even question going here, just go!!!! read more

I've ordered from Dee's One Smart Cookie a few times in the last two years and haven't been disappointed yet. My introduction to them came about because my wife has celiac's disease and has to remain 100% gluten free. When my wife and I turned out wedding from a very private affair into a slightly-more-public one we needed to find a gluten free cake on short notice. Dee's was not only willing to meet with us for a tasting and discussion of our options but made a beautiful cake that tasted amazing. The shop offers pre-made, packaged products (like bread, pasta, etc) as well as made-on-site baked goods. The service is prompt and friendly and the staff obviously really cares about what they're doing. From what I see they make baked goods for almost any dietary restriction (gluten free, vegan, lactose intolerant, etc) and while the prices are a little higher than you'd see at a grocery store or something similar the specialty nature of what they produce as well as the quality definitely justifies any premium in cost. If you or someone you know has any sort of diet restrictions, Dee's is a great place to get some dessert back into their lives. read more

The best vegan dessert shop! The cupcakes and the Whoopie pies are to die for! I still need to go back and try out their donuts if I can get there early enough! It's almost a 50 minute drive for me but definitely worth every mile read more
When I had heard there was vegan/vegetarian bakery nearby, I was so excited to try it out! I walked into the store and was greeted by a very nice man. I tried the funfetti cupcake and the breakfast protein filled bread. The bread was soooo good and tasted like a cinnamon apple nut bread. However, the cupcake was a huge disappointment. I have had lots of vegan cupcakes, but the cake and frosting on this one was weirdly hard. The frosting came off as a whole...Maybe it was left in the case too long? Regardless, the bread was delicious and overall I had a good experience. read more

Best Cake Ever! I ordered one for my daughter's "virtual" college graduation. It was only for the immediate family but during these quarantined times, I wanted it to be very special. I told them that her degree was in Geology (Earth Science) and asked if they could do something along that theme. It came out phenomenal looking, moist and delicious!! Chocolate Devil's Food Cake, fresh strawberry butter cream filling & vanilla frosting. Awesome! read more
