Let me start by saying the cake ended up being delicious. However, the service from the employees and the owner was awful and disappointing. The talking back to the customer, the rude tones and faces.... were all very upsetting. My sister has ordered my mother a cake from this shop for her birthday every year. My sister passed away in Nov. and I called to order it this year myself to keep the tradition. While ordering, the employee was rude on the phone. Fast forward to the day I pick it up, my cake looked nothing like the image I had sent over. While I know I asked for a smaller cake than shown in the image example, different piping tips could have been used to mimic the same thinner style. Similarly, the colors were very off, designs were added that were not requested, and the dollops around the top of the cake were missing. See images attached of the example vs. what I got.... I have years of bakery experience and I am very well aware that cakes like this require particular ingredients for allergies. What I don't understand is why I was told the frosting could not be any darker or thinner, when I have done that several times by myself (in a vegan bakery) with the same restrictive ingredients. After going to my car, I showed my friend what the cake looked like and her eyes widened. She was in complete shock at how awful the decor was for a SIXTY DOLLAR 6" cake... Regardless of it being gluten free, I have never paid that much in my life for a 6" cake especially with such bad decorations and piping. But my mom is used to these cakes, so I went on my way. As soon as I pulled out, I regretted leaving and called back to see if I could get it fixed before my mom's surprise lunch. I was unsure if they would redo their mistakes since I had already left the building, but they took it back to fix since it was not what was asked for. I received a text later that it was fixed and ready to pick up. I thanked them for the efforts to fix it, despite it still not looking how I hoped it would regarding colors and sizing of the design. When the owner took it upon herself to text me back personally, she was quite rude. She stated that she is sure my baking experience didn't have the additional constraints her shop faces, even though that is a wild assumption and it is not true... She went on to lecture me on how natural food coloring works and said how they are the reason why she couldn't make my cake similar to the image I requested. She also said I had an "apparent expectation of it being an exact replica" and that with their size and ingredient constraints, that is "not possible". I had no expectation of the cake being an exact replica. That is not realistic when the cakes are different sizes and etc. However, I personally feel the original and redo cakes I got were not even close to the image I provided regarding coloring and decor overall. I will not be returning for my mom. I will not be returning to buy dozens of pastries for my work events anymore, and my friends and family will not be returning either after seeing how I was spoken to and how poor the quality of my cake was. read more

Wow! The selection is amazing. Allergen friendly. Gluten free. Vegan. Wow. They post their menu on Facebook every day, so you can check there to be prepared. They have a huge case of baked goods- all gluten free. Plenty of vegan options as well. They also have savories like soups and pastas. I recently noticed Dee's great Yelp rating and visited while in the area. The shop is cute and they had a lot of baked goods. I was the only customer there, but the shop was vibrant. I assume they must have been working to get orders ready. In any event, service was friendly and efficient. A specialty of Dee's is gluten, allergen and dairy desserts. My family doesn't have any of these concerns, but I'm always curious to see what places can do when they don't use ingredients that many other places use. I bought four cupcakes for the family. I tried the carrot cake. It was flavorful. The icing was denser than I prefer and the cupcake itself tended to separate in a way that I'm not used to. I assume the use of gluten, allergen and dairy-free ingredients contributes to that. Perhaps I'm not the best person to judge how these desserts compare to other gluten free places, but Dee's is clearly a well loved place, makes beautiful desserts, provides outstanding customer service and provides a product that many of my friends value because of their dietary needs. I usually cringe when someone tells me something is (name your ingredient) free as it usually tastes way off. And, I do have a bad sweet tooth. I had been here ages ago. Like over a decade I think when I was traveling with someone gluten free and allergy free baking was new. That was a novelty. This was an incredible selection truly. The service staff asks to make sure what you're okay with in the baked goods before they touch them if you're ordering. Masks are mandatory for inside still. But since I'm not actually allergy free for a health/medical reason, I left feeling a bit underwhelmed by the donut and hostess cupcake I got. The cupcake was dry. Really dry. And the donut did not improve from having been baked instead of fried, though tasty the texture was kind of wrong. So I still love the place for what it provides, and people in the area probably find a better array of items than just the one snapshot I can provide. Thanks to Dee's my Uncle's Birthday Cake was a success. It was Gluten Free to meet the dietary requirements of many of my family members. When asked what kind of cake he wanted for his 90th Birthday my Uncle said the same thing I said as a child. "I want Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Icing!" The cake certainly fit the requirements. I'm sorry I didn't get a photo of the inside or the huge slice I greedily took! The Chocolate Layers had a hint of Raspberry. So yes it was delicious! Yes I enjoyed it. Did I still complain about gluten free? Ugh, yes.... I'm sorry but it's heavy on the stomach for me. I'm not a fan of dense chocolate cake. That doesn't mean you would have that problem. I prefer a lighter fluffy cake with flour and whatever makes it light and fluffy!! I will say everyone else said they enjoyed it. I certainly did while I was eating it. Whether my family has used this bakery before I didn't ask. Whether they will again, I don't know. I just know for this occasion it was just what was needed! Pros: -Lots of GF/DF options Cons: -Donuts are not very similar to what you would expect from the world of gluten -Pricey ($2.25/donut) -- Zebra Donut Chocolate cake donut with a thick chocolate frosting and a vanilla drizzle. These donuts are thick, a bit chewy, and a little dry. They're somewhat reminiscent of a Hostess Donette. I wouldn't say they're bad, but they definitely do not imitate a yeast or cake donut made with gluten. (Currently, the best GF donuts I've tried have been the GF cake donuts from Kane's Donuts in Saugus/Boston, MA). This was the better of the two donuts we tried. "Old Fashioned" Donut Vanilla donut with a cinnamon frosting. I'm not sure why this donut is called "old fashioned" because it doesn't look like a true old fashioned donut (with the jagged edges) or taste like it (with a crispy exterior, soft interior). This donut has the same texture as the Zebra and overwhelmingly tastes like cinnamon. We also tried a Blueberry Muffin and a Coffee Cake, both of which were better than the donuts. The muffin in particular was my favorite because the texutre is strangely reminiscent of edible cookie dough. Odd, but I'm into it! read more

This is by far the best gluten free establishment in the entire state. I found it by pure accident. I was in the are and in the mood for some treats. I actually found them on Yelp. The store is beyond clean. It's meticulously maintained. The staff was so friendly and informative. All of them really worked together as a team. I could have spent the day there. I had the soup of the day which was the corn chowder. Excellent! I bought pasta, bread, cookies, cupcakes, muffins and my all time favorite, the holy grail of the holiday season, pizzelle cookies. Last Friday I wandered in off the street perplexed by the superior Yelp reviews for gluten free bakery items. Is there a qualifier involved as in, "its pretty good compared to the usual uninteresting gluten/nut/dairy free items"? Well, I needed a cookie plate and wasn't sure I had chosen the correct place. I was under the impression that something without gluten, dairy, nuts or soy had to also be free of reasonable taste, too! And most likely you will pay more for this specialty option. How lucky for me that Dee herself was free and waited on me. She was very helpful and we settled on an assortment of four cookies including chocolate chunk, oatmeal, snicker doodle, and basic. She wrapped them up beautifully with a lovely bright red ribbon and decorative cellphane on a square black platter. (See photo) I brought them to my event and the rest happily came home with me. Eventually I got up the courage to really sample them, and wow was I surprised! The texture is a nice light crunchy yet moist cookie that melts in your mouth. They each have their own flavor, my favorite being snicker doodle. Wow again! It's really Delicious! Two pounds for the event set me back a cool $30, but what a nice option for my good friends with severe dietary restrictions. They are a definitely force to be reckoned with. At the Common Bond market in Shelton they carry a chocolate chip cookie sandwich with cream in the center and it is amazing no matter what diet you are on or what restrictions you have! It's not easy to find allergy friendly bakeries: they're few and far between - that in and of itself is an extra star. Between my mom and I, we have a variety of food allergies: peanut, tree-nut, wheat and shrimp. So safety while eating is of upmost importance - and sometimes you just need special treats for parties, celebrations, or just because. I'm happy to say we can both safely eat any items at Dee's without any risk of cross contamination or risk of allergic reaction. I've placed two orders at Dee's this year and each one has been great. The first was a "happy retirement" carrot cake, and the second was carrot cake and rolls for thanksgiving dinner! Items are decorated beautifully and taste amazing. I'm typically not a fan of carrot cake (but the retirement cake was a treat for someone else!), and I typically find "gluten free" items to taste sticky or more chewy due to their substitutes. BUT, the carrot cake from Dee's was amazing - everyone at the table enjoyed it (including my picky self). I paid over the phone each time for my orders, so pickup was smooth, quick and easy. (Pre orders allow you to personalize or specialize flavors and design). Prices are a bit high, but rightfully so. Anyone with allergies know that getting a dessert isn't as easy as heading to the grocery store bakery. I'd much rather pay a little more for something safe and delicious, and support a small business while I'm at it! The new location is much larger, with convenient parking and plenty of room to browse the cupcake, treats and pasta selection inside. I'm at Dee's at least once/week. Their donuts (apple cider and blueberry, most notably) are incredible. Pizza day on Friday is always a hit. And there isn't a better cupcake in the entire world (GF or not!) than the chocolate fudge cupcake with vanilla frosting. A few things I'll pass on- lemon bars (flavorless) and their bread (I have a huge taste aversion to garbanzo flour) but the texture is spot on. Thank you, Dee's for all of your delicious treats! My kids have never had a pb cup because of allergies, and thanks for Dee's One, they've fallen in love with sunbutter cups like their mommy loves Reese's pb cups! Upon arrival on a weekend morning, I was greeted by the friendly staff at the door and asked to mask up. I had forgotten my mask, but she guided me to complimentary ones right by the door. This review is specifically for the custom ordered cakes. The cake I ordered was beautiful and utterly tasteless - entirely disappointing. I have a family member with a food allergy, which is what was so appealing about Dees. But the cake was dry and flavorless. After the celebration the cake sat there for days untouched until I threw it out. The staff are very friendly (hence the 2 stars) but there are much better options, such as Claire's corner copia, for custom cakes that taste a million times better. I understand this bakery is allergy free so cupcakes sell for $5 on average here but when your vanilla cupcake tastes gritty (our friend compared it to corn bread) and the chocolate cupcakes had an offputting taste (though the chocolate frosting on top was great), we started to question if it was worth going out of our way to purchase these cupcakes at all to begin with.. I chose the pound cake and maple glazed donut which totaled to about $10. Donuts and cupcakes seem HUGE so I feel like I'm getting my monies worth for the $3-6 depending on which treat you decide on.
