i love Deerfield's Bakery and for years, we've been picking up custom birthday and special occasion cakes from them. Yellow cake, fresh strawberries, whipped cream frosting, decorations on top...as well as cookie assortments, mini pastries, and chocolate covered strawberries. Sure, the prices will give you some sticker shock if you're comparing it to like a Jewel cake, or some other run-of-the-mill place. But the artistry that goes into creating these jewels is absolutely first-rate. Granted, this place is always crazy busy, it's worth venturing out if you're in the suburbs and you've got a massive car, so that you can compete with the other crazy SUV drivers who always seem to set off a nerve with their driving antics. Like other reviewers have indicated, service is off-putting. It use to be better, but the last time we were here, which was for a pre-ordered, custom birthday cake and some pastries that we just picked out from the display cases, it was excruciatingly painful. Working in a busy bakery is bound to test the patience and service-aspect of any establishment and its staff. But come on now, to be looked at with a half-bored stare and given an attitude like they're just too cool for school, that's kinda where I draw the line. That and the lack of order-packing refinement (sorry, overpacking the box is not okay, especially given the delicate nature of some of the items we got and the fact that the prices are $$$$). I am so happy with the cake Deerfields made for my son's first birthday. I went in with a picture of what I was hoping to get and Deerfields surpassed my expectations. I ordered the full sheet cake with half chocolate and half yellow cake and all buttercream frosting. The guests complimented the cake and many asked where it was from because they liked it so much. In addition, Deerfields also created a smash cake to match a barn door for our Old MacDonald Theme. It was one of the oversized cupcakes...the perfect size! Pricing was very reasonable in comparison to other area bakeries. The woman that helped me with my order was patient and professional. I, however, learned that the full sheet cake was too big for our party of 60. I should have went smaller. However, I definitely will be ordering from Deerfields again in the future. read more

We ordered decorated sugar cookies, shortbread cookies and a sheet cake with our logo for a corporate event. The orders were ready on time, the charges were taken care of over the phone and the bakery employees helped me bring everything to my car, so the process was very smooth. They recreated our logo with icing (as opposed to the photo transfer) and it was perfect! They really took the time to get the logo and our fonts just right. All the items were delicious--our employees and customers enjoyed every last crumb. We also enjoyed their bacon donuts for the first time. WOW. I love that Deerfield's is both traditional and innovative. And if I hear one more person sing their praises for their gluten free line.... I stopped in for a couple of donuts recently - it had been years since I had visited this location as I typically go to the Buffalo Grove store. The "Good"... good quality baked goods and a friendly and helpful staff. Got everything I needed in short order and the guy at the register even made sure to sign me up for an "member card" (like most of us, I must have a 1,000 of these from different businesses). The "Not so Good". I was surprised at how little was displayed and how poorly the space was used to do that. I know the BG store is a lot bigger, but the space there seems to be used more efficiently as well. Just seemed like a fairly limited offering. Not sure how soon I'll be back to this store - definitely prefer the BG shop - realistically, 3.5 stars. read more

I came in here during my lunch because I was seriously craving some cupcakes. I made the trek up the street to try out Deerfield's. Upon pulling into the parking lot, you'll see that it's small, and there's only 4 spots, of which none are disabled spots. They also have some tables outside so you can enjoy your goodies if the weather calls for it. Upon entering, you'll see the donuts in the back, not covered by sliding glass or anything, they're out in the open. This makes me a little nervous. To the right of that is a selection of their breads. To the left of that is a case where they keep all of their chocolate dipped strawberries, cupcakes (even Jewish ones!) and goodies. They also offer coffee and custom cakes here. I ordered two cupcakes. One chocolate with white frosting and sprinkles, and the other that was marble, it was a vanilla cake with a little bit of chocolate in it, and vanilla/chocolate frosting in a flower shape. They looked delicious enough, and I was really excited. Upon getting to my office, I bit into the first cupcake (chocolate with vanilla frosting and sprinkles). The chocolate cake itself was moist, and a tad bitter. They must have used a bit of dark chocolate, which is great, but the frosting was as hard as a rock and not appetizing at all :( I was pretty dissapointed :( Tip: If you get a cupcake here / anything with frosting, let it THAW out. Later in the day, I had a bite of the marble cupcake...this time, the frosting must have thawed out. The vanilla cake wasn't as moist, but it was still ok. The frosting was definitely soft and good on this one. Both cupcakes had generous amounts of frosting. However, the 2nd cupcake made me go into a sugar coma. Definitely very sweet, so if you like super sweet frosting, this is the place to go. Last, but not least, the customer service here was alright. No friendly hello's or smiles, but not bad either. The two cupcakes were $3.85, which is also good. In the city, you pay that for a single cupcake at most cupcake boutiques. Overall, I'd come back here to give the other goodies a try. Great Experiences since I was a child. We used to hit it up on Sundays for donuts after church. We now just go their for special occasions, but it's sooo yummy. I love the Chocolate Croissants. Yum!!! We ordered our wedding cake from there. Granted we had a few small issues with it, (or cake toppers were not on the cake and had to have them found and brought to us... which lead to us jamming them on the cake... making them fall off when we cut the cake) but we don't really blame them. Shit happens. I thought it was a funny twist to our different wedding. If you are ordering a wedding cake, try to do it in Schaumburg... where the wedding & catering cakes come from. Key thing for those ordering a big cake. Request a $5.00 test box of the cakes and frosting. We did a little party with three boxes. Fun and a cheap way to serve desert for friends. You get little slices of the cake flavors and little containers of the frosting and fillings... we just made extra cupcakes to serve. read more

When I went to pick it up it didn't have the inscription on it, and the top was covered with his company logo which was supposed to be small and in the center. When I expressed my disappointment I was told they could write something on the gold cardboard platter and I was offered a free donut as compensation! I ordered a strawberry whipped cream birthday cake for our family's annual winter birthday gathering from Deerfields on Waukegan Road in Deerfield. My sister specifically asked me to buy and bring a strawberry whipped cream cake since it's a family favorite. We're all originally from the near northwest side of Chicago, and I also worked on the southwest side of Chicago, so it used to be easy to order an excellent strawberry whipped cream birthday cake in the past. There are a couple of my "preferred" bakeries, one near 55th and Harlem in Chicago, another on North Ave near Kedzie in Chicago. Two years ago, I moved up North, and I am now close to the Wisconsin border. Unfortunately, I didn't know of any comparable bakeries near my home, and our family gathering was in Deerfield, so I looked up bakeries in that area and found Deerfields Bakery. The people at the bakery were very nice, professional and helpful, when I ordered last week and when I picked up my cake today. But the cake I purchased was NOT as good as similar cakes I have purchased at the bakeries mentioned above in Chicago. The whipped cream was too sweet and actually tasted as though it was whipped cream MIXED with buttercream. The yellow cake was very dense, much denser than what I prefer, and a bit "tough". It actually tasted more like the heavy cake dough often used for wedding cakes. The cake was 3 layers. I ordered fresh strawberries, and they were on top of the bottom layer, with whipped cream on top of the middle layer. Every time I cut and tried to serve a slice, the cake fell apart cuz of the weight of the strawberries. Overall, the cake was okay, and looked nice, but was not as good as we had hoped. I guess I will make the long trip into Chicago for our next family birthday cake. So I wish this could be a higher star review but I have been ordering from Deerfield Bakery for 21 years and never really wanted to yelp them because I figured they were just having an off day and next time would be better. I feel like when you order a cake from the bakery it is very "hit or miss". The first cake we ever ordered was 21 years ago for my son's first Birthday. The cake was beautiful and they decorated it perfectly to the theme of his Birthday party at the Yacht Club. However the cake it's self was so dry inside that it was scratchy tasting. Like sandpaper. We figured maybe it was the summer heat. We continued to order desserts for our holidays throughout the years such as Thanksgiving and Christmas and those desserts were very good. These were the Cheesecakes and Opera cakes etc. They had a decent selection of decorated cookies that my kids always loved and were cute gifts for friends. The coffee cakes were fair tasting as well. The other times I ordered a birthday cake though, the cake was not exactly as the picture indicated the cake would look like. The colors were way off. They used frosting that bled on the icing when writing on the cake. The cake was lopsided. The cake was not completely filled with what was supposed to be inside. That was always a disappointment. Another thing that I always noticed was that the staff was never very pleasant. Ever. They are not interested in customer service, they just want to get the job done and move the crowds. The parking is inconvenient and the parking lot is dangerous. All in all I feel that having a successful experience at Deerfield Bakery is kind of a luck of the draw situation. So if you are having a really important event I probably would not count on this bakery to do it right. But If you need a few delicious cakes for a family get together then you will find plenty to choose from. I grew up in the area and always heard how great Deerfield Bakery was and I just could never understand why. There are many options in the surrounding area that will make a gorgeous cake for you exactly as you order and for a fraction of the cost. So I wouldn't pick Deerfield bakery as my first choice. If you happen to be in the area and you can find parking and avoid being hit by a car in the parking lot then pop in around the holidays and grab a few treats for the family. I was greeted by two pleasant staff members who graciously smiled while I "ooohed" and "aahhed" at all the delectable goodies stacked neatly on their shelves. Everything is made from scratch - near as I can tell - and it shows! Here's what I found: Braided breads, with various types of flavors and seeds. (The sesame looked great!) Various donuts - sprinkles and glazes and sports and fillings - many types to choose from, including the seasonal variety I chose to start with. (Pumpkin this time of year of course!) Coffee cakes, cakes, pies, more cakes with crazy impossible recipes I've only ever read about in books for people who love cake. (Chocolate forest cake! Yep.) The quality of the ingredients is very high and you can tell by the taste of the products. The types of products are all very traditional. The frostings and fillings are delicious. When I started coming here the cake was fantastic and they did basically anything I'd ask them to do and executed at a high level. just this last Thursday I ordered a set of cupcakes for my daughters 18th birthday. There was a lot of confusion with the order the decorations were blah and the cupcakes were hard on the Saturday that I picked them up. the frosting had a strange consistency and the cupcakes were hard and stale in texture. I may still come out here for over the counter purchases but for custom orders I will have to find a new bakery :( read more

I can't say enough great things about this place. I'm not huge on baked goods but Deerfeild's could really make me a convert. My office always orders from here and I decided one day to visit the actual bakery and I got a tooth ache 3 seconds from entering the door. They have everything; cookies, cakes,donuts, tarts, pies and other delectable pastries. You can order custom made cakes (my office got me one for my engagement party) or pick up something that's already available.. You need to give a 2 day notice on most custom cakes but it's worth the wait! My personal favorite thing here the lemon mini cakes..a must try! My advice is to go here and try everything twice. I'm writing this review in response to a friendly request by a wonderful worker while I was shopping. I was shocked when i was told of the comments here and I'm amazed at the amount of negative feedback, but I am not surprised. Unfortunately I've had the displeasure of associating with the type of clientele that frequents this location and it is nothing short of a miracle that Deerfields continues to deliver wonderful custom cakes at demand, amazing doughnuts and sugar cookies that will get any kid (no matter their age) to take a second look. I've been coming to Deerfields for several years now and have tried a laundry list of items, but nearly every other trip I find a fellow customer in a poor mood. Maybe it's because I've only recently moved to area, but what is wrong with some of these people?! Deerfields is a tremendous place filled with those that have a passion for enriching people's lives with friendly customer service, a smile, and a treat for every occasion big or small. I'm in love with their jelly doughnuts and the Queen Elizabeth hits the spot for my family! Years later, I am still in awe at the designs and requests for orders that they are able to handle! So disappointed. The buttercream frosting and chocolate cake have been a favorite, but I'm not sure what has happened. The cake is now more frosting than cake and the frosting is not the same. It was gross with 1/4 cake and 3/4 frosting. We will never be ordering from Deerfield again. Very sad. It seems this is the way to cut costs. Honestly, in terms of providing a good customer service experience, they fail miserably. Their cakes are creative and fun and taste fine but they have no problem allowing their customers to be placed on hold for over an hour. I put in a call as I was leaving my garage in Winnetka and no one had picked up as I entered my appt downtown - 55 minutes later. I called again on my drive back and was on hold for 20 minutes. I was furious but wouldn't give up bc I had consensus among many family members on the cake. Then, I left a message and did not receive a call back as of the following day. I am calling again and have been on hold for 15 minutes. I had ordered a cake a month with a similar experience. My recommendation is to order your cake from one of the many other options - I know that I won't be ordering from Deerfields Bakery again. read more

Spent time with Manager(Lauren?) and specified some decor instructions. dollops of whipped cream, writing in brown icing - so it would 'pop' (HER recco). VERY disappointed (and almost embarrassed) by how mediocre final cake (picked up on Saturday) was. Writing in white (did NOT pop), scrawled lettering, one dollop of cream and broken choc/white swirl horns. We also had to ASK to pay. I've lived in the area my entire life, and Deerfield's Bakery is TOPS! The BEST. Smileyface cookies, cakes, assorted pastries...mmmmmmmm, good. You can tell the family puts their heart into it. There is no bakery in our market that matches the flavor of this classic shop. Parking is easy along the side or the adjacent lots. Service is always friendly. I spoke with Sheila, the customer service manager, and all she was willing to offer me was $10 off on a cake that was $26. Now that I've had a chance to review many more donut places and refine the criteria, I offer an updated review. Cake donut- Ok. A refined balance of sweetness, moisture and consistency. The crust was on the soft side and greasy, but that's what made it tasty. Frosting edged on the grittier side of smooth, flavor ok. The yeast donut had the same balanced characteristics as the cake donut. Combined with a light glaze that served as a highlight and not a spotlight hog, it is RECOMMENDED. read more

I am not from this area, but my boyfriend is and this past weekend was our first anniversary. Being that we both love cheesecake I wanted to find a bakery nearby his house that I could order a cheesecake from to surprise him. I found Deerfields on Yelp and late one evening I sent an email to Deerfields inquiring about my options. I received an almost immediate response from Tim with a lot of information and then when the bakery opened the next day Elizabeth from the customer service department helped me finalize my order for a fresh strawberry cheesecake with personalized chocolate bar. The cheesecake was phenomenal, one of the best I've had! The strawberry topping and fresh strawberries were outstanding! The service was friendly, professional, and personalized.
