We arrived around 1:00 p.m., and the restaurant was not busy. We had planned this outing for weeks and were catching up while looking over the menu. Paula greeted us, brought water, and took my neighbor's coffee order. When she first asked whether we were ready to order, we told her we needed a little more time. When she returned, we were still deciding. Rather than politely checking in, she rudely told us, "Let's go--it's time to order." We were both immediately uncomfortable. My neighbor tried to lighten the tension by joking, "You're going to kill us, but can we talk for five more minutes." As Paula walked away, she responded, "You can talk after I bring you your food." Her tone was condescending, impatient, and completely inappropriate. When Paula returned, I ordered French toast with bananas and chocolate chips, with whipped cream on the side--an order I have placed here many times. I also ordered a Western omelette and asked to substitute the peppers with American cheese. Paula then went out of her way to correct how I phrased my order and made me feel as though I were stupid. My neighbor noticed the difference in how I was being treated and was extremely uncomfortable as well. At that point, we paid for the coffee, canceled our order and left without eating. I have supported this restaurant for a long time and have brought family members and friends from out of state here specifically to try the food. I have never felt this unwelcome or disrespected during any previous visit. Unfortunately, Paula's behavior ensured that this will be my last time coming here. Good food will never compensate for service that leaves a customer feeling belittled and targeted. If you are a person of color, please be wary of this waitress. One employee's behavior completely ruined a restaurant I once enjoyed and regularly recommended.

If there were a few kinks to iron out, I'd say that the beignets weren't really airy and some of the mushroom stems in the omelette were really tough and should've been discarded before cooking. Next for dinner: their fried chicken dinner which came with Mac and cheese, collard greens/broccolini, cornbread, and the tempura hake, and a side of cornbread with pecan butter. That pecan butter was delicious, we definitely asked for more. The fried chicken dinner was also amazing, every single dish in it. The hake while crispy, didn't have enough salt. The server fixed it immediately with a side of garlic aioli and that was great. If I could make a suggestion, I would say they should swap out the celery root slaw for something that goes better with the fish. Service was excellent both times. Very friendly and accommodating, always asking if we enjoyed our meal and they were quick to make things right if we had requests. Ambiance is really nice, very warm, inviting, perfect for a sit down meal. Apart from a few kinks in their dishes (which I'm sure they can resolve), I'd give them 5 stars.

Sat at the bar to start waiting for friends and try a couple of their signature cocktails. I'm a huge fan of bourbon followed by tequila. There was a drink on the menu called, "Orange you Glad" that blended both. Too tempting not to give it a shot so I did. There's one shot of bourbon and a half a shot of tequila along with a quarter shot of banana liquor, banana liquor, green mango and lime.... spectacular. Four roses bourbon is the foundation making it an excellent start. There's not a huge choice of appetizers or entrées, but what they do offer is a nice variety with something you should easily find to your liking. We had two appetizers, the pickled veggies and the mussels. The pickled veggies were good, but the muscles were outstanding. Plenty of muscles to share. The sauce they were a part of was out of this world tasting. Of all the choices on the menu I actually went with the half chicken because it sounded so good. Many can make an argument that you can't screw up chicken, but few can make an argument when the chicken is outstanding. This was absolutely outstanding. Even the sides were amazingly good. If you're looking for a new restaurant and tired of the same old, same old, this one is worth your effort.

Griddled bread with just enough butter, just enough crunch, and no sogginess. Beef soft, with a loose grind, cooked to a juicy medium rare, and with nice beef flavor (too many diner versions use stiff, el cheapo patties; this was quality sourcing a couple steps up). And melty cheese and soft onions complementing while letting the beef sing loudest. No one ingredient was artisanal-level premium, but every aspect was handled beautifully. -- Fries (included with the Patty Melt): Alas, the dreaded "coated" kind, an obvious frozen product.
