Deck's is one of the only old school hardware stores left. If you need a random length screw or bolt you can almost bet that they have it. All of the employees are extremely helpful and can easily navigate the hidden hallways, rooms and stair cases. I have shopped at Deck's for decades to support them (Lowes is much closer and cheaper) and because they seem to have just about everything. However, their customer service lately needs serious help. For the past few years, everyone there seems cranky and like they are doing me a favor. Last straw for me was I went there to buy some masks and boxes of gloves. I walked in at 3:55 and as I looked for my items, the Owner comes over and says "you know we are closing in 5 minutes" (I didn't know they closed at 4:00). Regardless, he didn't say how can I help, or what are you looking for. I was taken aback and while I bought the items, I thought this is the last time. I now shop at Stanley's in Oreland and they couldn't be nicer or more helpful. Every time I go there I'm asked multiple times if I need any help. read more

Instead of going to the big box stores for a nut and bolt repair job I decided to go here because it was close and we were short on time. We just moved to the area and were unpacking when we noticed a broken bed clamp and crib rail. I was so surprised by the experience! I got there 2 minutes before closing time and the attendant took me to the counter to look at what I needed replaced. Instead of walking up and down long isles buying screws bolts and washers in bulk count bags, I got the exact screw and washer combo I was looking for along with the perfect crib fix. I only had to buy what I was looking for so no need to dump 9 extra screws and bolts into my tool box. If you need a box of screws and you don't mind driving to save a few cents then go to the lowes or Home Depot. If your not sure what to do or what you need and you don't feel like searching the isles for someone who might know what they are doing. Here is your place! read more

Walking into Decks is like stepping back in time 50 years. It even smells like an old hardware store. We are lucky to have this gem of an establishment in our community. It's packed with three stories and a basement full of anything you could possibly need for lawn, garden, paint, electrical, plumbing, window, pet, fence, masonry repairs. Take your father or grandfather into Decks and see what they think. I've been going there for 15 years and don't know all the services they offer. They have a metal shop, screen repair, glass shop, saw sharpening. Take a number and be amazed. Decks isn't just a great hardware store... it's an EXPERIENCE! Yeah, some things may be slightly more expensive than the big box guys, but Decks has literally everything you need, and they'll even help you find it. Personal service is gold in this big-box world, and Decks is fantastic. There have been some poor reviews here, but for the life of me I can't see why. My father and I have been shopping there since 1963 (yes, really!) and we've never had a less than pleasing interaction. They have great stuff, great advice and it's just plain fun browsing their many nooks and crannies. I'm working on repairs at my son and daughter-in-law's first home in Ambler, and have been to Deck's Hardware twice. The first time I got excellent service. The second time, I got a rude and surly employee I'd been warned about, but it was still shocking. I walked out without saying a word and won't bother going back. I was sent here from a fellow at Home Depot after he wasn't able to give me the right size screws for a project. He whispered in my ear "Go to Deck's Hardware in Ambler". They had it! Amazing 125 year old "old school" hardware store with incredible customer service. You go in and ask for something, and they get it for you. Love using decks. The staff is amazing. You walk in and ask for this thingamajig or that dohickey they have it or can get it and know exactly what you are talking about. I deal with ty deck all the time and show him a screenshot of what im looking for he says they have it in stock or he will get it in for me. Great business i dont care if i can get something cheaper. I Cannot Fathom why there are bad reviews on this place! I will be a long time customer. I live in Ambler, and never went there. I've lived here 4 years, always walked by and thought: how cool is that? Local Hardware store..that's deceivingly expansive. My boyfriend stopped in one day in August after a cat busted through our screen window. He wanted to get parts to fix it. He was home in no more than 10 minutes (we live down the road) he says he walked in and the guy asked what he wanted, cut screen for him, and rang him up all for under 5 dollars. Can't get that at Home Depot or Lowes : because you have to buy a whole kit, when that's not what anyone wants. When he returned a tool they let him borrow a week later (he saw someone picking up a custom made screen)--we will check that out next time! Also, during the holiday season I finally took my first trip inside. It was love at first sight to anyone who enjoys an old world charm feel. LOVED its cozy ambiance. I just needed 5 eye hooks, and they would have rung in to a whopping 50 cents for about 8 of them. That's a steal. So for those reviews that think "everything is expensive" is just wrong. dusty display tools on the exterior of finely kept hardware shelves are alright by me, and if the store was closing and I wasn't there on time, then that's simply my problem. Not very nice service, everything is expensive and a lot of the products have been there so long they're dusty, but it's the perfect place to go when you're in a bind and need a hardware store item ASAP. A good old fashioned hardware store that's been a community icon for years. They have a very extensive inventory and friendly staff. Worth the trip. Tell them what you need so they can show you where it is, as they have much more than you can see in the main display area. read more

It's a bonus that it's nearby, but this would still be my favorite hardware store, even if I had to drive an extra mile or two to get to it. It's a family-run, traditional hardware store (complete with hardwood floors, cavernous basement and extra storage upstairs) that gives you one-on-one personal service to help you with whatever you need that day--from gardening and home tools, to screen/window repair or just nuts and bolts. Great place for stuff that is otherwise hard to find at home centers (backyard clothesline poles for example), and you can't beat it for knowledgeable help with everyday home and yard maintenance needs. read more

I thought a local hardware store would go out of its way for it's customers-NOT so at this store. My husband was around the corner, stuck in traffic, when I called at 5:26 (cell phone time) to let them know he would be there in a minute, the man on the phone said he couldn't wait and "he wasn't the one closing." I asked if he could ask the person who was closing if he could wait literally one minute and the man on the phone replied "NO". At 5:27 my husband arrived, the light was on, the door was locked and no one answered. They have just lost a customer for life plus all of my Facebook friends as well. I got ripped off by Decks. It's unfortunate when you try to support your local businesses and they don't treat you fairly. I purchased an item for $12 and change today and I used cash because it's a pain to use credit here with their archaic hand written accounting system. I hand the guy $23 so I would get a $10 in change. At first he said I only gave him a $10 and was reluctant to give me my change but then he finally did. I went to leave the store and he changed his mind and asked for the $10 back. After some arguing he took the money. I told him I would never shop there again and he didn't seem to care at all. I was shopping with my 12 year old son and even he knew I gave the clerk a $20. Maybe if this store had updated their register and accounting system to this millennium things like this wouldn't happen. And the customer service from the store was awful. It's unfortunate for me to say this about a local small business but I will never shop there again. Beware. read more
