So sad because he did do work for me 14 years ago and was great. It's now August 1, 2016. When I did chat with him, he said that he was doing chauffeur limousine work on the side. First: I will say that the work that Richard did on our decks and other wood surfaces was great. It looks beautiful and feels like it will last. However, the two-star rating has everything to do with his customer service. While this was a 2-3 day project, it took a couple of WEEKS to complete due to Richard repeatedly not showing up when he said he would, and going dark on me for several days without any communication. It turned out he was experiencing a family emergency that needed tending to - that part is okay. However, instead of being upfront and contacting me to let me know what the situation was and that there would be a delay in the project, he just did not respond to any emails or phone calls for three days, while our deck was completely vulnerable to the elements and all our plants/pots were cluttering up the other yard space. Once I finally threatened to have the job completed elsewhere, he finally reached back out to me. However, even after that he did not show up to complete the project on time. The final day or so of work got dragged out to 2 or 3 because he didn't come when he said he would. Very frustrating to work with this contractor. Unfortunate - if customer service and prompt communication had been a higher priority, this would have been a five-star review! read more

They fixed it so now it will be fine for years to come. (they applied two coats of a four-times regular-thickness paint.) Richard worked with us to stain 3 decks and paint our fence lines, back retaining wall and upper and lower deck rails. It was a job that took awhile to complete because we were faced with the challenge of the rainy weather and a few color mishaps on the part of the paint store. However, Richard stayed on top of it and went out of his way to deal with the store, exchange the paint several times and come back out to finish the job the way he intended. He paid attention to detail and really coached his team to meet his expectations. His team was friendly, professional and really considerate about being on the property. Richard is a detail-oriented professional who takes an enormous amount of pride in his work. It is very clear he treats your deck as if it was his own. Meticulous work. Impeccable results. He wants to see your deck "shine". Recently bought a home in Pleasant Hill and needed the front yard and backyard patio/ decks to be done. I was referred to Deck Doctor's by a co-worker of mine so I checked out some of their pictures on Deck Doctor's Instagram, and gave them a call. I called and left a voicemail for Richard and we followed up two days later when we scheduled a time for him to come by. My boyfriend and I had him take a look at both the front and back deck and patio. After that he gave me an estimate based on the work we wanted done & he was scheduled to start the following Monday. The job came out how we hoped it would and his workers kept their work area clean and made sure everything was out of the way by the time the day was over. The weather was not so good over the couple of weeks we had Deck Doctors scheduled to work, so the job took a little longer than we had hoped due to the rain, but when it was complete we were happy with the results.!! I asked Richard about this in advance, and he owned up to it, and admitted that he was not perfect in his past. He said his life had changed, and he was in the process of correcting all of that. I liked that he took responsibility and gave him a chance on the job, even though his price was a bit more than the other quote I got. I recently needed to make repairs and refinish my two-tiered deck. The bottom section had several boards that we're breaking (dry rot) which made the deck unsafe. I obtained 4 bids, all seemed very professional. However Deck Doctors (Richard) was the most personable and seemed to really care about my project. I had used DD about 5 years ago for a refinishing and was pleased then also. Deck Doctors bid was very competitive. When additional dry rot was found once the lower tier was removed, Richard worked with me to make sure the additional repairs were appropriate and within my budget by giving me a couple different options and discussing the pros and cons of each. He also kept in touch with me via cell phone on project progress and any delays/issues. The entire project took about 6 days. I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
