OMG! What a delight! This organic farm-to-table restaurant is my new favorite. Expensive, yes. But worth every penny. Unfortunately we didn't have time to order dessert, so only got to drool at the dessert menu. But we now have an excuse to go back. Visiting from CA for business trip. This restaurant was FANTASTIC!!!! Austin, our server was spectacular, come to find out he's from a little town in CA close to me, small world. All 3 of us had the Filet, and boy was it good! Never had a filet with a tad bit of "bark" on the outside, just blew my tastebuds away! Spuds and greens were on point, just had a wonderful time, so happy we used Yelp to find our restaurant, did not disappoint. Austin, I didn't tell you I used to be a mystery shopper for restaurants. We left hungry and laughing at the absurdity of this restaurant. I'm genuinely baffled by the high rating for Decant. A friend recommended the restaurant, and we had also heard from a local, award-winning chef that we might want to reconsider. These intrepid diners proceeded ... The evening started with the first three bottles of regional wine we tried to order being unavailable. We eventually pivoted to Old Fashioneds, which arrived without cherries. (Cherries and our server's embarassment were provided in abundance, eventually.) Our crab cake appetizer was beautifully presented, but it was so incredibly salty that it might as well have come out of a can. The tomato salad, thankfully, was excellent. But how much can you mess up fresh tomatoes? The house-made focaccia was so burnt that it smelled unappetizing when it arrived. I tried digging in past the burnt portions to find something edible, but that didn't work, so we sent it back. I have been priviledge to dine out frequently over the last three decaces and have only sent something back to the kitchen three times. The osso buco was another disappointment. It was served with a dill crema that absolutely did not work with the dish, and the al dente noodle were gross - too salty and stiff. By the end of the meal, the whole experience had become laughably bizarre. We went to the local deli, picked up local wine, cheese and crackers for a third of the price of our meal. read more

Great service and attention by our server and the host. Only issue was the chef substituting items and it wasn't clearly communicated to the wait staff so there were some things served differently than what was described on the menu. My husband took me here for my birthday. We used to love fine dining together a good amount but with my health, I took a year off from eating out at restaurants. So we were really excited to try this place especially with it saying organic etc. Our server was super chill. Very nice. The food was pretty good. The only thing I thought was odd was that the center of my steak was very cold. The potatoes it was served with was hot. But I didn't want to make a fuss and have it heated or sent back. It wasn't ideal but at the same time there's a lot worse things in the world than a cold steak. read more

Food quality remains outstanding. However, the prices have skyrocketed since we last came. They charged us $9 for bread, and two stamp-sized pieces of focaccia came out to greet us. For some reason, that felt excessive and rubbed us the wrong way. Didn't set the best tone. The entrées were outstanding and executed to perfection. The tri-tip was seasoned beautifully and the accompanying BBQ sauce provided a contrasting sweet kick to each savory bite. We also had the halibut which was a gorgeous umami experience, bathing in a delicious dashi. I didn't leave behind a single drop. The ambience in the outdoor patio is very romantic. At least three couples were celebrating their anniversary dinner there. It may be worth it to stop by for a rare special occasion, but otherwise I doubt we will be back anytime soon. While the food is great, the Manhattan-level pricing puts it out of reach if value is important to you. read more

Restaurant physical space is nice. Service quality wasn't in any way what I would expect at this price. When we entered we were one of the first tables for dinner service - eating a littler earlier than routine due to plans later in the evening. Had to search for someone several times for simple routine service requests - don't forget - this is a tiny physical space. Food was modest / good but certainly not special. Flavor of sauce served with filet seemed "off". Cook on steak was perfect. Halibut was better than average for in the valley but certainly nothing like a similar entree at Local Ocean or comparable on the coast. A bland dish. The options for wine by the glass are very dissapointing - very limited and not quality options - I would expect a higher quality option for $16 / glass - that particular wine by the bottle is about $25 retail. I would be happy to pay slightly more per glass for high quality options. Concerning issue was receiving the check at the end of the meal. It was brought to me in a closed wallet which I simply placed a card on top of without opening. It was brought back several minutes later. I then glanced at the bill and saw that my itemized bill was correct, $197 for the two of us but that my card was charged $237. When I brought this to the attention of the staff, they required my card again to delete charges from the card and then charge it again at the proper $197 amount. Concern to me was the explanation - "We mistakenly charged your card for the bill of a different table". This is simply not a true explanation - there were no other tables closing their tabs at that time. And it was conveniently exactly $40 above the actual correct charges. By the manner in which the explanation was given, it seemed like it was a moment of - oops, the guest actually looked at the bill when we didn't think he would since he didn't when given the original bill. No manager came to the table (again - this is a tiny restaurant and wasn't bustling - this was a mid-week evening), no recognition of the significance of over-charging a guest by $40, not a truthful explanation. Mistakes happen. Service isn't always completely ideal. Incorrect charges can legitimately occur unintentionally. Sometimes an item doesn't leave the kitchen quite perfect. But overall, the sequence of repeated mis-steps was not consistent with a top rated restaurant. read more

WOW, just wow, from start to finish! Started with a glass of bubbles to celebrate our Anniversary. Our server recommended we start with the Caesar salad which was beautifully plated and perfectly dressed. I ordered the Filet and it was one of the best I've ever had. It gave Hell's Kitchen a run and as a craft, was a bit better to me! It was perfectly paired with just the right amount of my favorite sauce, Bordelaise, and had a beautiful slight touch of truffle. Hubs ordered the Mushroom Risotto that was smooth, creamy and tasty as well. The Parmesan foam was a great compliment to the earthy mushrooms. Not one person (staff) walked by without acknowledging us, checking to see if we needed something or refilled our glasses with wine or water. It was really nice to see the entire unit working well toward everyone's dining experience. Lastly, our main server answered all my questions about the menu or how something was prepared...even the long process of making Bordelaise (iykyk). I had the mushroom risotto which was good. For the price, I was expecting one of the best meals ever, and I don't think that was the case. My husband felt the same. My brother in law had the ossa bucco which I would try if we go back, and my sister had the filet and she really liked that. The waiter was great! This restaurant is absolutely fantastic! The outdoor terrace creates such a romantic atmosphere. My bestie ordered the Wagyu beef brisket, which had a Mexican twist--an ancho chili barbecue sauce, tomatoes, and capers! My flounder dish was unforgettable, though I can't recall the exact accompaniments. The fish was drizzled with a delicious soy-based broth, and both my husband and I agreed it was the standout dish of the night. We also tried the fried pork belly (no photo) and passion fruit panna cotta! This panna cotta was unlike any I've ever had--absolutely delicious! Highly recommended, 10 out of 10! read more

This was our second time going to Decant and we were very pleased. For a reservation for 2, we had cocktails, a glass of wine, soups/salad, an appetizer, two entrees and dessert for around $200. Frankly a pretty good deal for finer dining. The atmosphere is fine dining although the dress code tended to be more casual. Nice candle lit tables with plenty of room focused on quality over quantity. Our server was very kind and took all of our orders at once and he spaced them out very course appropriate. The highlight of the dinner was the appetizer: 18 hour duck wings with Mongolian seasoning. They were absolutely delicious! The other specifically notable observation was dessert. It seems far too common for most restaurants to have an average dessert, but not at Decant. The chocolate mousse was incredible and a very generous portion. Highlights aside, every aspect of the evening, from cocktails and salad to main course were just what we wanted. We did observed a party who came in and was rushing the server asking to bring things out whenever they were ready etc. If you're looking for something fast and easy, you'd be at the wrong venue. Was not going to post/return but, just ran across the receipt again. Took my mother there for her 84th birthday. Scheduled the appointment, informing of her 84th birthday. Seating, for two, was immediately to the right side of the entrance door (I could touch the door). I felt so cheap for my mother to be sitting there. Wait staff was wonderful, Informative and polite. Even provided two complementary flutes of a "sparkling wine" for her birthday. First glass of wine , Pinot Noir, was...Unpleasant. Returned for a Cab, where I think any sips were deducted. Way below the bowl $22. I HIGHLY recommend you look at photos to see what they consider a glass of wine. I asked for water. "Regular water or sparkling" I knew had a cost but, $7 for exactly what I can buy at safeway for a buck! Split morels as appetizer. Halibut and Tri Tip diner. No desert. Overall rating!! Ambiance. (2) You are in a converted house on a semi busy street in some small town. If this was in some large city, by some famous landmark, coast, river, or top floor of a "City" building I would say it might even be cheap, But here?? Waitpersons. (9-10) You can never fault the wait staff. They are like us. Food. (6-8) Certainly not top notch but, decant, I ment decent. Value for expenditure. (5) $159.00 before tip, without salad or desert, is ridiculous. I think people review differently only because "Hey look....this is who I am and where I can eat. This place has possibilities. Phenomenal service and selection. Wonderful staff that was very informative on menu. Started with old fashion with a Blanton's upgrade. Then moved into heirloom tomatoes appetizer that made me like beets again. Went with Waygu Tri-tip with cherry sauce, smoked greens, goat cheese croquets and little brown grapes. Had a 3 oz pour of Pinot Noir with dinner. Finished with cherry dessert in a powder sugar cone of deliciousness and an Americano. Anything on the menu would be fantastic. Staff was very personable and kind. Met a lovely lady having dinner by herself and tried not to talk her ear off (wanted too) but Perla you were a joy to meet. Food was delicious and imaginative. We ordered the morels appetizer but the server came back since they were out so we got the pork belly and carpaccio which were both amazing. Our entrees included the lamb loin/lamb rack and the osso bucco. The lamb was more on the rare side but edible and both very good. Dessert was unknown. We didn't see our server after he brought our appetizer and he never checked on how the food was. The hostess gave us the dessert menu and we chose our desserts but nobody ever came back and we sat there at the empty table for a long time getting frustrated and then finally decided to have dessert someplace else and get out of there. When the server came to the table, even though we had the dessert menu, he never mentioned anything so we asked for the check. read more

I absolutely loved this place! We just ate there for our anniversary. The service was great and the outdoor patio had a romantic ambiance. My husband had the waygu tri tip which had a Mexican inspired flare. Ancho Chile bbq sauce, tomatoes and some gooseberries! I enjoyed the halibut and I wish I remembered the pairings. It was topped with this delicious soy dashi. My husband and I thought it was the best dish of the night. We also enjoyed the Pork Belly Fritto (not pictured) and the passion fruit Panna cotta! Went here on my first date with my now amazing girlfriend She said I had to plan our first date and at a bar was fine lol. I want to take her somewhere more special and we both love food and farm to table, local restaurants. She said she never went to Decant because it was the most expensive restaurant in Medford. It was not, pretty reasonable for what we got and the quality. The comped us a sparkling local wine because it was a special occasion. We got a few dishes and shared. The beef appetizer was amazing, the uncooked one, I forgot what it was called. Got a seasonal risotto that was also amazing. A seasonal (around Thanksgiving) salad that was so good. And the duck that was beyond amazing. My date pick my wine because she used to be in the industry and I told her pino was my favorite and she picked such a delicious one. Staff was super nice. Attentive but not intrusive. We talked so long we closed the place down lol. read more

Probably the worst experience I've had in any restaurant. I called at 5 pm. The guy who answered the phone said that they were so busy that only reservation open was at 8 pm. I booked a reservation for two. When we got there at 7:50 pm, a tall, awkward looking guy with white apron and dirty white shirt at the front entrance behind their greeting podium informed us that they stopped serving at 8 pm tonight because they didn't think anyone was coming that late. I reminded him of my reservation and asked if he could check it, he just stood there like a dumbfounded, deer caught in a headlight of 18 Wheeler and said, Nothing! I don't think the restaurant deserves any rating in my humble opinion. This restaurant is in my specialty folder of Never To Return. Avoid at all cost. read more

Fantastic food and the outside seating was a great ambiance. As one might expect, portions are small, but wow the flavor and nuance is packed into each dish. All our servers were extremely friendly and helpful as well. The only fumble for us, dropping a star was the order mixups. We order drinks, bread as well as our entrees at the same time. This jumbled the order of getting things and we had to remind the servers of what we still hadn't received. A little disappointing for a place of this caliber. Very disappointing experience. The food was underwhelming and did not seem fresh. My steak had so much salt/seasoning I couldn't eat it. The service was just as disappointing. staff were inattentive, slow to respond, and seemed uninterested in providing a good dining experience. Between the poor quality of the food and the lackluster service, it was not worth the time or money. I would not return and cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

Executive Summary:  Ambiance - 4 Stars/Food - 4 Stars/Service - 2 Stars Although I write a lot of reviews at dining establishments, I don't really consider myself a "Foodie". As I don't have a fine pallet that easily distinguishes subtle flavors or textures, my review ratings usually reflect: 1.  My opinion on whether the restaurant delivers on who they think they are. 2.  An overall "sum of the parts" feeling on how the dining room, service, food, and fellowship come together.  3.  How a restaurant reacts when things don't go as planned. Gayle and I dined with 2 friends at Decant last Friday night, and largely due to excellent reviews and raving personal recommendations. As Decant's Website states, this is Medford's Best Fine Dining Restaurant.  Adding to that on the front window on this handsome residential building: Local - Organic - Sustainable.  Our early experience confirmed as much: a very attractive dining room, a somewhat limited "gourmet" menu that's priced accordingly, a serious wine list, and attentive staff that seated us and professionally took our orders.  From there, things took a bit of a turn: 1.  After cocktails, our friends each ordered a salad, while Gayle and I asked for bread for the table. Yes, we were hungry and after asking no less than 3-4 times, the bread finally came after the salads were finished. It appeared that only the last of 2-3 wait staff we engaged took responsibility to go back to the kitchen, pick up the plate and deliver it.  And there were no apologies. 2.  Later came dessert in which the coffee I ordered didn't come until our sweets were half eaten. There were also a few requests, but when one has to get up, walk over to anyone, and ask for the coffee, that's not fine dining.  Again, there was no apologies, nor was the coffee very good at whatever premium price we were paying.  3.  My King Salmon was very good, but not 5 star amazing.  The others similarly enjoyed their selections, although Gayle also noted that her Cauliflower steak was over salted, as was one friend's Risotto.  The 2 desserts ordered for the table were also very tasty. I did think that the time out of the Kitchen was a little long, but getting your bread late did relieve the hangries.  The above observations might be considered to be picky, but when a restaurant represents themselves as fine dining, etc. etc., a higher level of scrutiny should be expected and noted, especially at premium prices.  Or maybe as Gayle suggested, wait staff had an off night? So back to my 3 criteria.  In my opinion, Decant did not fully deliver on its business model last Friday evening as the wait staff service significantly dampened the combined spirit of the evening.  Gayle called the service uneven, while one friend thought it was slipshod. What I was thinking throughout all this how much I missed the old (and 5 Star) New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro. read more

It was great. From the time you walk in the door, the staff is welcoming. The drinks were delicious , the appetizers were memorable and the entrees were exceptional. My son got the chocolate mousse for dessert and I got an extra spoon. Best dessert I ever ate! He's lucky he got any of it. Go here. It isn't cheap but you won't get better food anywhere in this area. And the wait staff is superb. I think our waiter was Chris. I'd adopt him. But Michael and the others watched over everyone and if you made eye contact, they were right there. Can't say enough about the service. The place is spotless. It is comfortable. The owner Jessica, our server Austin, and others were warm, professional and passionate about delivering a great customer experience. For starters, our party enjoyed two(!) plates of focaccia, followed by goat-cheese stuffed morel mushrooms, seared scallops, and sous vide pork belly. For mains, we enjoyed pistachio crusted, bone-in lamb loin and filet mignon, each with beautiful, flavorful sauces and accompaniments. A deep chocolate mousse completed the meal. I wish I had photos of the plates we enjoyed but that will have to be next time. The "after" version of the plates would have appeared almost completely clean.
