Oh my! First Holly was amazing and the food was amazing! Super experience!! Just a super location for the theaters

The 4 of us had just seen a play on a Sunday afternoon and were hungry. It was early so we got seated right away with no wait. The service was unremarkable. The server was a teenager with no sense of humor but that's ok. Our food was fine. We ordered pasta and my husband and I shared a salad. We ate lots of bread and they refilled as needed-2 kinds. White & wheat. It was fine. We each got a different pasta dish. I had one of the specials of the day. It was a fettuccine with creamy dill and mustard sauce with chicken. I had enough for my lunch the next day (but I did eat a lot of bread before the salad & pasta came). I'm writing this a week later and to be honest I don't remember much about the salad, if that tells you anything. Others in our party had eggplant parm which came with pasta, another pasta dish with added meatballs, and angel hair pasta with prawns. Nobody raved about how amazing their food was, nor did they complain. I noticed somebody else's review about dirty menus but I didn't notice that so maybe they took care of that. I lived in Italy for years and this is the best USA version of Italian food I have had. The atmosphere is cozy and beautifully decorated. The Food amazing. We had dinner on the balcony and the heaters were excellent, everyone was toasty. Our bartender gave us some fabulous wine recommendations to pair with our food. Everyone enjoyed their dish, the meatballs were by far the favorite. I finished off the evening with their hot cocoa cocktail, the perfect dessert! Would be a lovely place for a date, very cozy. The first trip here I ate bread and clams. Very good. Second trip I tried spaghetti and meatballs. Classic Italian dish right? Sorry but it tasted like watered down tomato paste and the meatballs were flavorless. It was extremely disappointing. The clams were good. Again. Caesar salad, meh. I really want to like this place. This place was so good i downloaded yelp just to write a review. Even though me and my friends are teenagers our waitress(Holly i believe) treated us extremely well. We were on a time limit and the service was fast for a sit down restaurant. The famous mac and cheese definitely deserves its name, and the tiramisu was the best i have ever had.(And i have had some really good tiramisu.) If your a bigger fan of more cake in your tiramisu i dont recommend it but otherwise it was absolutely fantastic. The service was seriously the best ive ever had at any other restaurant, the waitress even remembered my name, and made tons of jokes with us. The mocktails there are great, especially for people having their first one. If you visit ashland oregon I fully recommend this place. The ambience was also extremely beautiful and me and my friends couldnt stop taking photos. PLEASE GIVE HOLLY A RAISE! read more

When I saw their cheaply produced grubby menu should have been a red flag. It's dark and shabby with a bad pub vibe. There were 5 of us. We ordered a couple of starters to share, we ordered various pastas. The place wasnt crowded enough to justify the iffy service....i was never asked what drink i wanted. The appetizers showed up halfway through dinner. The "scampi" were over garlicky barely cooked medium sized prawns....the other was Sam's Club French bread pizza masquerading as bruschetta (not even close). I had my touch stone go to pasta fettuccine carbonara. It should have been a hammy, creamy delight but it was a soggy oily mess with diced ham and frozen peas. I could believe the kitchen had a bad night but if you are the manager reading this you should take note. None of the dishes were good...all were barely edible. Conveniently close to the theatre, but not worth the poor experience of bland food and sassy service. Our server Lily was very rude when seating and serving, did not check our table a single time until giving the check and had a sassy and sarcastic demeanor when speaking to us. Acting so comfortably sassy around us when she had just met us felt downright disrespectful. To top it off, the food was disgustingly horrid. I had their $20 spaghetti and it was so bland I couldn't even finish it. The bolognese sauce had no meat in it and was such a meager amount it barely covered the noodles, which, to make things worse, tasted like watered-down plastic. Absolutely horrendous experience. Do not recommend this place at all. I can see why it's rated so poorly. Please, do not waste your time or money going here. The only reason I am giving it even 1 star is the fact that it is three steps walking distance from the Shakespeare Festival Theatres. read more

Food was just plain bad. The Cesar salad was overdressed and uninspired. Pepperoni pizza was cool ( not even warm), and lifeless cheese on cardboard with garlic salt and pepperoni that seemed old as well. I had angel hair pasta with canned tomatoes and a wedge of lemon with prawns that may have come from the local reservoir. Service was so bad I think the waitress left because she was embarrassed to serve such awful food. Everything was bad. Cocktail was mediocre. As usual... I hate reviewing w/ 1 star. A look through my reviews will show that Its not terribly common for me. And i'll say right up front that the one star is based SOLELY on the food. The service was outstanding... attentive, friendly, etc... But I paid $60 for two entrees that were bland enough that I barely had a few bites of each before asking for to go boxes that I then pitched in a trash can a block away. I ordered their spaghetti w/ meatballs, and their "famous" mac & cheese. C'mon... the Mac was as flavorless as anything I've ever been served. I do a LOT of cooking myself. One of my best dishes is in fact a baked m&c w/ gruyere and cheddar. Plus of course a lot of other yummy bits--which absolutely includes things like smoked paprika, pepper, salt. You know... things for flavor. This dish though... quite actually had NO taste. It claimed to be rich w/ white cheddar. No cheddar flavor detected on this day and no amount of table salt/pepper could save it. Straight into the trash. Next up was the spaghetti. Again... I know "good" is a very subjective term. But I quite honestly have a difficult time believing that many people would eat this sauce and find it appetizing. I genuinely believe a can of prego meat sauce to be more appealing than this was. But... as per usual. To each their own. The spaghetti also went in the trash. If you're looking for a meal packed w/ flavor... i'm confident that both these menu items will not do it for at least 7 out of 10 readers. We however drove promptly to a mexican joint down the road and ordered another dinner. Great service! Terrible and embarrassingly bland food though. Man I hate saying that. LOL read more

Friends invited me along to check this place out for the first time (they're regulars and have been dining here for over 20 years) yesterday. I enjoyed the small Caesar salad - do wish some of the lettuce had been chopped more finely. I ordered the lemon piccata chicken and while I finished the entire dish, here's what I learned. The chicken pieces themselves were not breaded, and I don't believe were seasoned - but they were very freshly cooked. It was a handful of smaller chicken chunks, so in the end I wasn't sure just how much chicken was in the dish. Typically you would see the chicken breast on top of the dish with the sauce in this recipe. The tomatoes were fresh; the pasta was cooked al dente. The sauce could have been stronger and more plentiful. Fun fact: I took the leftovers home and microwaved them just three hours later and it tasted better! My theory is because there was a chance for the sauce to soak in and the sauce went to the bottom of the dish to begin with. I ordered tea and my friends ordered a chianti as well as a Shirley Temple, which they make with ginger ale here. read more

The food was good, but the service wasn't. Luckily we didn't go there the night we had a play to see! We arrived promptly at 7:00 and someone asked if we had a reservation. We said yes, and then were ignored for several minutes. After being seated, we didn't see the waitress for quite a while and waited several minutes to order. It took an hour for our food to arrive, but it was good. We noticed a table of people who arrived before us seemed upset. Turns out that their food never arrived and they had to leave because they had a play to get to. This restaurant has been in the same location for years--right next to the theater. They know that people are trying to get to the theater on time, Don't go if you have a play! I'm not sure if I'll go back. read more

Do NOT waste your money. Arrived for our reservation and we were seated promptly, but were not given menus. No one came to our table for 15 minutes, we just sat there. The wine was good. We ordered the garlic bread (I've made better at home with butter and garlic salt), and the bruschetta which was terrible. My wife's food was lukewarm and my macaroni, supposedly the restaurant special, was tasteless. We had such an awful service experience, that to get the bad taste out of our mouths, we popped into Macaroni's to get some tiramisu to go. Great location if you need a place to eat at OSF after the preface and before an evening performance. Recommend a reservation. Eating outside was lovely. Big YUM! for the clam antipasto. Also shared a Firenze pizza which was so nice - great balance with the crust and topping. Also had to enjoy a gin Treuse cocktail! One comment is that like many restaurants they appear to be still recovering from the pandemic as our server appeared to be covering all 8 or 9 tables single handed. That being said, we had plenty of time to eat and make the 8:00 performance. We will definitely eat here again! read more

Food=good Service=very bad What's going on guys? Why does the rude waitress still have a job? We had a reservation for 6 and when we arrived, we were the only party there. Took over an hour to get our food...3 tables got their entrees before us. When I asked the waitress about this, she told us that since one of us ordered garlic bread (4 pieces for a table of 6), she put in the other 3 tables entrees before ours. No apology whatsoever. Then she disappears for 15mins pouting over the completely legitimate question I asked. When it was time for the bill, the woman had the gall to put her gratuity into the bill. First of all, the food and the service was awful. I wasn't impressed with the chicken as it was totally over seasoned and the chicken was over cooked. The fresh spinach looked good, but the first bite was all salt and garlic and it was beyond greasy. The only thing that was half decent was the wine and even that was mediocre. I don't normally write bad reviews, but this place has earned their one star. The wait staff and rest of the crew, very rude, condescending, and just completely unprofessional. During our dinner, we could hear the staff gossiping, cursing and discussing things that their patrons should not have heard and they could care less. My fiancé stated that he'd never eaten here ever and now I understand why. Will not be returning to this establishment again. You guys should really teach your employees to be more courteous and professional. read more

I almost never write reviews, but I just happened to glance at some of these reviews, and was appalled!!! (Perhaps I'm just not accustomed to review culture.) It seems that some people just get off on exercising their "critical" capacities as an ego exercise! They need another hobby. Please don't take the nasty reviews seriously. My family and I are locals, and this is one of our favorite places to eat on birthdays and other occasions. The food is excellent. I grew up in Little Italy in NYC -- Robert Deniro-land -- and I KNOW good Italian food. This is as close as you'll come around here to the real thing. The Marinara sauce tells you what you need to now about an Italian restaurant, and theirs is excellent. The service is friendly and efficient, though sometimes a little rushed when there's just one server, but she's excellent. Admire her hard work, and relax and enjoy your dinner. Oh yes, and its a cozy little upstairs space, with a bar and a little outside deck (for when its warm enough), and a nice view of downtown Ashland. In a town where most restaurants fail before their 10th birthday, Macaroni is special. It is a very long runner here in Ashland, OR. Maybe 20+ years? My family of 4, came in during the holidays, looking for delectable pasta or eggplant parm (a specialty here), and they delivered. This place is more than decent (3 star), it is YUMMY! The ambience, is dark, and intimate, with pictures (paintings) depicting Italy around everywhere, it is a two room place and we were in the back which is a little dense. The seating here is dense because it is a rather small place with less than 20 tables, but it is comfortable enough. There is even booth seating (which most of us love!). On a busy weekend in Shakespeare time you should probably call in for a reservation which you can make on their website. We got friendly competent service. Most of all the freshness of my pasta was excellent. I had clams and sausage in a fresh pasta dish. Excellent flavor. All entrees, which are all under $30, except for the Ossobuco (veal shanks are expensive!), also includes a salad or soup. Good value! Their wine list is very decent, lots of good wine even for $25-35 a bottle in 2020. Again good value, when most restaurants of this quality are higher than that now for a bottle. They have a full liquor license, so order up, I think it will come from upstairs. I give the food 4 stars and an extra plus (above 3) for the freshness and value, that I received this holiday 2019 night. Why not 5 stars? Well it is a very standard menu, innovation here is lacking, and overall it's just not that "rocking". People have complained, maybe stick with the easier stuff like pasta dishes and pizza, because amazing Ossobuco well that can be a bit challenging(?), or realize this ain't Florence. Ashland struggles for great 5 star places overall. But Macaroni's is solid. The other Italian place in town is now not as good anymore, per my Mom who is a resident of Ashland. Her friends complain about prices and overall inconsistency in execution. I think if you are in town, and a bit confused of what is "good", you best consider this place for a nice intimate Italian fare, close to the awesome Ashland plaza. And you can get out for under $100, with wine and a dessert. It is a value, and who doesn't love classic Italian. read more

We have a tradition of eating here annually when we come down for OSF shows. We called early in the day for a reservation but were seated downstairs. Food this time was just OK. We gave the waiter our payment once the check arrived and waited over 45minutes for them to return. We had to flag down staff numerous times to hunt down our cards. Disappointed overall. read more

Meh. Husband and I sat outside on the patio. We ordered a large Caesar salad and a plate of pasta to share. I was shocked when the salad arrived in an ENORMOUS bowl. Like, there was easily enough salad for eight to ten people. Since there were clearly only two of us, I feel like the server should have said something when we ordered. When I commented on the quantity, she said, "Well, that's for two of you to share, right? Should be okay." Not wanting to waste food, we ate as much salad as we could even though it was mediocre at best. We filled an entire takeout box with leftover salad but there was easily another box worth that got tossed. Pasta was alright. Nothing to write home about. I visited the upstairs dining room. The bar is upstairs, but next time I eat here I won't take the climb. The downstairs dining room will do fine. It was busy when I arrived, but I was seated quickly and the service was quick. The ambiance was just right casual with a nice upstairs view of downtown Ashland. I decided to test the basic meatballs and spaghetti. I always rate Italian restaurants by quality of the marinara sauce and whether the noodles are al dente. Not too sweet and not tart. Chunky bits of tomato, but creamy at the same time, generous meaty meatballs. As good or better as I've eaten in NYC or Italy. I just moved to Ashland and I like Macroni's better than its upscale neighbor across Triangle square. I will be eating here frequently. read more

My party of 5 came for a dinner and had an okay time. The ambiance was nice, typical of an Italian restaurant. However I will mention that there was an unpleasant aroma that was pervasive in our room, that reminded us of the inside of a bathroom. The service was good--our waitress was an absolute delight and we received bread free of charge. The meals were a hit or miss--my mac and cheese was not as flavorful as i would of hoped but my friend really enjoyed his spinach appetizer. The food was a bit pricy, but not anything unexpected from a sit-down Italian dinner. Overall, with a better ambiance and more flavorful food, we would have enjoyed our meal more, but it was otherwise satisfactory. read more

Ordered from DoorDash! Food arrived hot and fresh, or as fresh as possible for DoorDash! But the sausage was dry and inedible! The spaghetti had an extra layer of sauce and cheese on top that I scraped off! The pasta is over cooked; but tastes okay! The bread that came with the meal is a little dry; but tastes okay! I'm pretty sure the sausage is frozen, like Olive Garden, and other "Italian" restaurants in the area! It arrived burnt in some places, dry, and mostly inedible!
