FInally got around to trying Deacon's out....complete waste of time, sadly. I get what they are trying to do with the interior, keep it ironic and hipster, from the 70's. The problem is it really is from the 70's and doesn't feel like a place food should be served any longer. Staff are indifferent to patrons except for refilling coffee. Food ranged from terrible to almost average. Expensive for what is very like a low rent. Head elsewhere for a real brunch. read more

Crispy Chicken Sandwich with Fries - $9.50. It's huge. Gigantic. Crispy. AWESOME!!! BUT.... The bun is too big - way too much bread. Really. Next time I am going to ask for it on toast. Had good food here before but after receiving an overwhelming amount of attitude when calling in a pick up order 3 times in a row I decided to complain. I was very diplomatic with my complaint until I was told that I was in fact an inconvenience for them and that they had customers that came in and sat down to eat. I've been taken here twice in the past week by my workmates, is a local fave of theirs. The instantly good thing I'll say about Deacon's is they're quick on refilling your coffee, which is always a good sign to me! More coffee now please *glug glug*. Bearing in mind I'm still getting used to the North American way of life, so asking what type of bread for my toast I would like is still a novelty! I decided on sour dough today, and it was lovely! Deacons is the quintessential neighborhood diner. On an unassuming corner in the no-mans land between Gastown and Railtown, it's unlikely anyone who didn't know it was there would stop if they'd driven by. But oh - those folks are missing out. Deacons is fantastic for breakfast, brunch, or even a mid afternoon (cheap!) beer on the (new!) patio, and as it's within walking distance of our place we're there a couple of times a week. The prices are low and the food is above average for a diner - the mexican scramble, in particular, is not to be missed. With extra homemade salsa, of course! Newly opened little dive-y-diner in a sketchy part of town but incredibly good and catering to the tough economic times with budget meals that taste so good! And even better with a hang over...hmmm..hang over breakfast! Friend told me about this place, he said the owners of Cobre opened it up to continue their legacy. Open early, the 65 seat diner has the swivel seats so unique to diners. They have pancakes and eggs, bacon and hash, oatmeal and scrambles....so American and greasy and not diet conscious at all. Thanks for a great local experience! We arrived late morning and I was torn between the breakfast and lunch menu. Seeing the specials board, I settled on the pulled pork grilled cheese with poutaine. Decent service, very busy but still de-breaded my order in spite of initially saying no when I told them it was a food sensitivity. Took a long time but Saturday brunch, so I guess that's to be expected...I had the quesadillia minus the tortilla, plus pulled pork (tasty) and guacamole. I love greasy spoons. I love diners. I love breakfast. I really wanted to love Deacon's for so many reasons (mainly because it's so close to home)... But it failed miserably in every way. There were about 6 of us, and all had different things (egg breakfast, salad, sandwich, burger, chicken fried steak, pancakes etc.). Everything was at best mediocre going down to inedible. Pancakes taste like pork, even if you get them solo (not so good for vegetarians), steak was like leather & way overpriced (as is most of the food), salad was pathetic. Even the coffee was barely passable. Not to mention we waited too long to get seated when it was not that busy, and the waitress had no clue that the chicken fried steak was actually steak & not chicken. Service was indifferent & unapologetic about mishaps. Really left us wishing we had kept our money & stayed home & fried up a few eggs. We were craving for Fried Chicken and Waffles because we saw it on a blog somewhere for Deacon's Corner but sadly they didn't have it on their menu. However, we did end up getting fried chicken with poutine (around $9.50) and fried chicken with grits, eggs, & hashbrowns (around $12.50). Man IT WAS DELICIOUS & HIT THE SPOT!!! The fried chicken was super tender and spiced just right (maybe just a tad salty but we loved it). It was heaven on a plate. The poutine was quite good. The grits... What on earth are grits lol..?? It was mashed up stuff, a little like mashed potatoes with diced vegetables and is served with a "gravy" that reminded us of a chowder. It was a creamy white soup looking gravy. We initially thought we were missing a spoon so we can drink this "chowder".. We are just ignorant people lol.. Service was very friendly and quick as well. Straight-up: Either the food is really good or the service is really good. Rarely both. Thankfully the food is great more often than not. Their pulled pork monte-cristo is my go to. The pulled pork has a good kick and works wondrously with the french toast, not to mention the portion is huge!! So eat half, take the rest home and reheat in your oven. It's a fun leftover! I also like their pancakes, their fried chicken rules, and I have never been dissatisfied by their breakfast specials. I've frequented this place many times, having worked in the area for a long time. Most of the negative reviews here fall into one of two categories: - expensive for diner food - poor service The food isn't dirt cheap, but it's within expectation. The portions are fairly generous, so I don't really see price as a problem. Maybe it depends on what you order, but everything I've had was fine for the price, very filling and exactly what I ordered. As for service, I've been here many times and not had a problem. I mean, the servers aren't gushing and hovering over you the whole time you're eating, maybe that's the experience some people expect from "good" service, but I'm eating and having a conversation, leave me alone and refill my empty cup/glass when I put it to the side. That's all I'm really looking for, and they do that. I've decided that if I visit a restaurant once, and had a bad service experience, I'm not going to give a low rating just because of that. I'll either review other aspects or come back again before reviewing -- and if I never come back, I simply won't review. The server will be punished anyway by getting a bad tip, no need to hold the entire restaurant accountable because one person was having a bad day. For all you know, that was his or her first day and s/he was fired afterwards. Came here with my bf this past sunday morning. There were a few tables left, seat yourself. We arrived just in time, as it began getting busy quick. We ordered.... Corned Beef Hash with rye toast - I was definitely jealous that my bf ordered this. So darn yummy!! The flavors were so fresh, loaded with peppers. I was so impressed. Best rye toast :) Reuben Sandwich - quite good but I think it could be improved upon. A bit more meat but thinner slices. The cut was too thick. And more sauerkraut, for sure. I came here for an early lunch recently and had a relatively enjoyable experience. My mom had the soup of the day, the chicken stew, my dad ordered the corned beef hash and I ordered a fried chicken wrap with french fries. The chicken stew was very hearty and filling, but I wasn't too impressed. They're quite generous with the chicken though, with lots of big chunks in the stew. My dad thought they skimped a little on the corned beef in his dish. I enjoyed my wrap and was only able to finish half. The chipotle mayo gave it a nice spicy kick. The fries were just average. Such a great diner. Super cool staff, delicious quality food, and no wait time. We came two days in a row during our stay in Vancouver because it was just that great. I had the veggie hash (comes with a butty biscuit, yum), it was so filling yet didn't make you feel heavy and gross (diner food tends to knock you out). My fiancé had the Mexican scrambles (comes on a bed of crispy shredded hashbrowns and a side of toast), he loved it. Had a kick of spice, great flavor and very filling. The next day we both had the veggie scrambles (also comes on a bed of hashbrowns and side of toast). Crispy veggies, fresh eggs, cooked to perfection. So good we had to have it twice. Best pulled pork ever! We went to use up our groupon here ! Every time I can't not order the pulled pork! This time i ordered the pilled pork sandwich which wasnt enough food for me( i am a big eater) so i also ate my boyfriends pancakes ! I usually wouldn't give this place just a 3/5 stars but our order was forgotten and we ended up waiting slightly over an hour for our meal! The server was very nice though and gave us a piece of pie on the house. The place definitely needs more servers; the poor lady was serving over half the restaurant! The food , groupon and the nice server made up for the wait. Ill probably come back here in a couple months when I get that pulled pork craving again! tough yelpers here, albeit customer service does make a difference. the extra star for me is simple: free wifi, in a diner style and considering this is in the middle between Chinatown and Gastown, DC definitely has a uniqueness to being here. No other place that has this type of relaxed atmosphere without having to spend the big bucks. It's actually quite well lit, considering where it's located, corner location with booth seating on the right and middle; some action seating at front. Patio section still open. Nosh and Nibble came here for dinner and I had a great taste of the following: Chicken Fried Steak ($15.95) Southern Fried Chicken ($12.95) The Chicken Fried Steak was a crispy fried 7 oz beef sirloin steak with sausage gravy, 3 eggs, hash, and a choice of corn bread or toast. For those unaware, there's no chicken in this dish; the steak is fried as if it were chicken. I had mine with toast and man was this filling. If the steak wasn't already full of protein, the eggs, hash, and potential corn bread would have finished me off. The steak was fully breaded and drenched with the sausage gravy making it extra saucy. On the inside though, my steak was quite dry and tough to chew into. I did like that the hash was made with potato strips instead of cubes and the eggs came over easy as ordered. There isn't too much to say about the bread except that it's generously buttered. The Southern Fried Chicken was a great main. If you're looking to avoid a big dinner coma, this chicken might be a great choice. This came with 2 pieces of boneless crispy fried chicken and gravy; we opted for fries on the side. The gravy was good for dipping the fries and the chicken. The chicken was less dry than the steak and had a great crunch to it. If you've ever felt fast food fried chicken was too oily, the chicken here should please you. read more

Who here loves big, tasty, American-style breakfasts? Put up your hands! Ever craved chicken friend steak, biscuits and sausages, or pulled pork on your pancakes? This is the place for you. And bring a massive appetite. A group of us dropped into Deacon's corner before the car show a while back, looking to fill our bellies with some great breakfasts. None of us were disappointed! I had to try the biscuits and gravy. This is one of their "big breakfasts" and is clearly deserving of the title. Great flavor all around - from the gravy to the sausage patties. Laura had the pancakes - again huge and nice and fluffy. She's made comments about going back for more. The group also tried the Carolina pancakes, which we were less impressed with, and the Mexican Scramble, which Dave loved. Deacon's seems to be the perfect balance of greasy spoon and damn-tasty food. Service was good and prices reasonable. read more

Hello, We had a horrendous experience at the Main St location today. We were seated in a timely manner, served coffee and our order was taken. That is where the enjoyable experience ended. After waiting over 30 minutes for food we asked a waitress to check on our order. We were told the food would be out in 7 minutes but it took 10. When the meals were delivered I asked to see the kitchen chit and was able to confirm our waitress had forgotten to enter the order until we complained about the delay. Upon arrival the poached eggs were overcooked on 2 orders and the wrong toast delivered on another. At that point we had enough and left, our meals unfinished. If the wait staff had been more professional and less surly teenager this situation could have gone in a more positive direction. Not having an onsite manager to deal with the situation was problematic. They made us feel like we were some prima donnas whining about something minor. The overall attitude sucked and only heightened the temperature of the issue. I would suggest some professional server training for the floor staff as the customer service skills when handling a complaint are lacking. Having worked in food and beverage for over 15 years I have to say this was one of the worst experiences I've had in a restaurant. We will not be returning and would never again recommend Deacon's Corner. read more

The service here is so terrible. We had one bad experience after another but let me give you the highlights: - The server propped the main door open. All the people sitting in my area immediately became cold (it was only 8 degrees out there after all). I asked if the door could be closed and she replied that the kitchen had no ventilation and the kitchen staff were hot. Now I'm sympathetic to the kitchen staff in this scenario - but maybe they should get some kind of ventilation system in the kitchen?! Anyway, she said she would leave it for a few minutes and then close it again. As she walked away the guy at the table next to us asked if the door could be closed (he must not have heard us talking about it). She said to him 'You're cold as well. Fuck, fine', then proceeded to roll her eyes as she closed the door. So incredibly rude. - We had a groupon to pay the bill. We were told that we couldn't use the groupon as groupon had made a mistake on the terms and conditions and it was meant to say it was only valid after 4pm. We showed her the groupon, and how it did not say that, and we were entitled to redeem it now. She went on to give us this big long story about how she'll get into trouble with her boss if she puts it through before 4pm, etc etc. Frankly I don't care about any of that, the terms say I can use it whenever I want and I wanted to use it then. They should take the issue up with groupon, not with the customer. She FINALLY put it through with the groupon, however not after telling me many times about how she was going to get into trouble with the boss. Ordinarily, if I liked the place and the servers were personable, I would have been more than happy to pay the full price and come back another time with the groupon. Absolutely no way in this case - I am never going back there again. In conclusion: service - so so bad. Food - pretty good, especially the fried chicken. However is it worth suffering through the terrible service for the good fried chicken? No. read more

deacon's used to be our go-to place. in fact, we were there so often, we knew our wait staff by their names, and they knew what we were going to order before we said anything. but lately, even though it's only two blocks from our place, we walk further for better breakfast and brunch service because the service standard has dropped significantly. in the past six months, we've had worse service than in any other restaurant, and that includes the elbow room cafe. the last time we were there, hubby and i waited to be seated. for close to ten minutes. yes, it was busy, and yes the place is packed ... but eye contact and a smile would have been nice and encouraged us to wait for them to be unbusy enough to clean tables and booths so that we could seat ourselves. what made it worse was that, out of the two staff working, one looked over to see us, and looked away again as if he wanted to pretend that we weren't there. boo, deacon's staff, boo. we'll be walking further for great service. read more

We came here with a voucher with a monetary value. Where you can order what you want and the limit was $24 anything excess you would have to pay for it, + tips and tax. I ordered the ribs and my girlfriend ordered the burger, the ribs was good. But while eating the burger my girlfriend found a long piece of plastic cling wrap within the burger. We didnt mind but thought we should at least inform our waitress of the situation. We called over our waitress and told her what was happening, and her response was "ok". No I'm sorrry no nothing. We were like what the heck? Wheres the service that everyone here is talking about? We then overhear the waitress informing the manager/owner about the situation, he notices that we are looking at him, and he shrugs it off, once again no apology no nothing. The food wasnt that bad but the experience was terrible! If you do come here and you see sonething is wrong, Complain about it and don't let it slide like we did. read more
