I wish we had a Deacon's Corner in SeaTown, but then again that might not be a good idea b/c I'd be there all the time for breakfast... and free wi-fi. A diner that serves up great greasy spoon also just happens to have free inet for it's customers? Yes please. We had coffee, BLTs with avocado and fried eggs and hashbrowns here yesterday morning and everything was great. The potatoes had just the right amount of spice and crunch. The sandwiches were fantastic- the most perfect breakfast food ever. And the coffee? Black, really decent... not watery like most of the sludge people usually pass of to me in greasy spoons. The bill here came to a whopping $21 with coffee, which blew me away. Excellent prices for what we got, great service, and they allowed us to sit at the table and type away for two hours after we had finished our meals. Next time, I'm getting the pancakies. I also don't get it? $50 for breakfast for the four of us. (Pancakes x2 + french toast x2 + 4 coffees incl tip) YIKES. The pancakes and french toast were huge, which is good... I guess. Bacon was pretty tasty. But that ridiculously small serving of compote was rather useless. I don't understand why it was so expensive. The ingredients are very cheap. The rent is high? Doubt it. Sketch-ville. hmmmm? Didn't like it when the owner type guy sauntered on in and put on crappy music and turned up the ugly lights? Weird. I won't go back. Next time I want a weird expensive breaky, I will go to the Elbow Room on Davie. I came here for a Sunday brunch with group of 10 people and they had no problems splitting bills and handling our orders. Its located on the outskirts of Gastown and can be easily missed if just driving by as its set a bit inside the building on the lower level. The menu is huge with a lot of variety - it was so hard to choose. I ended up getting their chicken and biscuits with gravy, hashbrowns, eggs and grits. When the plate came, the portions were massive! There was no way I was going to be able to eat it all. The chicken was really good - fried well so its crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I should have just ordered the fried chicken. But the hashbrowns, oh the hashbrowns. I could sing praises about those for days. Those were delicious. Evenly fried and seasoned well. I could not stop eating them even after I was completely stuffed. I barely touched my grits cause I was so full. This is your typical diner food, but it seemed not as greasy. Ugh. I have no idea why this place has received 4- and 5-star ratings. After we sat down, had a look around at the room and scoped the menu, we seriously contemplated leaving. But unfortunately for us, we stuck it out. The place has about as much atmosphere as a community centre food concession (grimy concrete floors, bad lighting, a screaming baby, urine soaked washrooms, a TV playing something nobody was watching, distorted noise blaring from a sad radio). It feels like the place was hastily thrown together in the 1970s, boarded up for twenty years and then re-opened by cool kids who thought the space was ironic but know/care nothing about food or service. The food is what you'd expect from a place described as a greasy spoon: fried eggs & bacon, BLTs, fries, the usual, but everything seems mysteriously overpriced and slow to arrive. The staff all seemed uniformly surly and put-upon--except for one sweet server who stood out because she was the only one of the bunch who could muster a smile. Food was perfunctorily dropped on the table with no eye contact from the server and our "thank you" to the guy at the till went unreciprocated. A perfect end to the experience. With so many other superior--and similarly priced--diners in Vancouver (like The Roundel Cafe), I can't imagine why anyone would line up for this place. Fail. read more

To say my interest was piqued when I heard a new spot was serving up biscuits & gravy and chicken fried steak would be an understatement. To say I was apprehensive of such Southern delights this far north of the Mason Dixon Line would also be an understatement. But, the biscuits & gravy were great...as good as any I've had in a restaurant. The biscuits were just the right consistency and held up well to the gravy, which had a respectable amount of pig in it. I did have to ask for extra gravy, though, as every last bite MUST be covered. The biscuit goodness was part of a larger, big as yo face, platter which included 3 eggs, hash browns and 3 (my guess) house made sausage patties. All of it, spot on. As for the space itself...okay, I guess. Kind of forgettable and bright. Not overly diner-y in my book, but with breakfast like that, who cares. I have to say I had high expectations for this place as someone highly recommended it to me. So on a rainy Sunday I decided to give this place a try as the other place that shall not be named was closed! The decor is hipster meets diner and I was really looking forward to some delicious food. My server was very nice and friendly but there were a few issues with my experience here: 1) The cutlery was not clean, I found food residue on my fork so I asked for a new one. The second one also had stains on it so this was a big let down! 2) I ordered the spicy fried chicken but it was so salty and dry that I could hardly swallow it even though I had drowned the meat in a sea of gravy. 3) The fries were not cooked properly, the middle part was frozen! Mystery Clubhouse I ordered a club house sandwich. I waited at least forty five mins for that sandwich. I was going to leave. I was really annoyed. At last it came.. and to my confusion... Clubhouse sandwiches come with three layers of bread.. I asked for two sliced of bread. Then its cut into quarters. On my plate was three quarters of the sandwich with two slices of toast.. and ONE with THREE slices of bread. Examining it further this last piece looked like an entirely different sandwich. The ingredients were not fresh.. my sandwich looked like it had been sitting out for hours.. and this mystery piece with more bread looked like it had been sitting for days! The rest of the plate and my friends food was not good at all. Fries and gravy was gross and how can you mess that up? I was laughing at this point, not gonna eat my food and ready to pay the bill and just leave. I found this place after googling "chicken fried steak Vancouver". Boy, did I ever luck out! I've been three times - on consecutive Saturdays - and I've tried something different each time. I haven't had a bad meal yet, which I can't say about other diners in town. Big thumbs up for the chicken fried steak, biscuits, and the awesome gravy. I would encourage anyone who came here in '09 to come back and give the food another chance. It's great! If I wanted to be picky, I'd say that the hash browns are not to my taste, and the prices seem a little high for the area, but it's all about value for money... DC is DEFINITELY good value. Try it! Tough crowd. With the Alibi room and 2 chefs and a table close by within similar price points, I'm not sure how to justify going to this diner. Grits and chilli were flavourless, I can forgive the grits, but I am unsure how chilli can be so bland. It's chilli, that is nearly impossible. Ok. I paid $10 for the strangest (most unappealing) chili I've ever tasted. It came in two parts: a regular size bowl with the salty gooey ground beef (that's it-- no veggies to be seen and a 'meh' sauce) and a mini bowl beside it with baked beans inside. Now the beans tasted decent but the whole bowl full of meat was just too much. Very salty and heavy. And strange. Sorry Deacon's. The musical fruit tastes much better combined with the meat. I was also surprised that people call Deacon's cheap. $10 for a bowl of chili didn't strike me as an exceptional deal for a greasy spoon. I can't believe this place was listed in Vancouver Magazine in an article on "101 Things to Eat Before You Die." Positives: food portions. The Chicken Fried Steak comes with four halves of toast, three eggs, and a big ass steak. Negatives: waitress forgot nearly every request I made (for water, wifi password, OJ, coffee). Nice. There were four other people in the place, so it wasn't like she was busy. She even abandoned me at the counter in mid-payment. The food quality was average at best. Cold hash browns (the only small portion). Dry steak that gravy couldn't moisten up. If this is your idea of a great breakfast place, there are ten better that I'd like to introduce you to. read more

Deacons you let me down today!!!! We needed food and internet so Deacons was the call... We got caught in wait for your server to take your order spin, we finally gave up so I walked up to the a server that was customer chatting and dish drying and gave her our order... Well they missed not one but two side orders of cheese, When asked how is everything we brought it up... they brought us out two cold slabs of cheese on a plate. Okay but my egg wasn't cooked, (i'll just eat it cause I am not sure what would happened next). During all this we had ask twice for the wifi password, after finally getting it and after several attempts to log on we then find out the system hasn't been working a few days.... Okay so they are busy; blah blah, but please dont charge us $3.00 extra for the screw up on the both cheese burger orders. To their credit my first two visits where good to great... but after several strike outs in one visit I have to only give them the 2 stars.. read more

The first time we went here for brunch, we were obviously unaware of its popularity. There was a 45-minute wait. Instead, we went to the Alibi Room (which I've recently reviewed) - and were still hungry. But, we persevered, and went back early for another brunch run. Got seated quickly, and got our food. The place is filled with regulars (lots of hugs, air kisses and bumps going on), which I always think is a good sign. I really wanted the biscuits and gravy, and I was not disappointed! Huge portion, great value for money, and yummeroos!!! My only beef is with the service which, though efficient, lacks warmth. I felt like one of the masses, that I was being served so they could get me out for the next person (now waiting in the ever-growing lineup). Push your way through the sea of horn-rimmed glasses, asymmetrical haircuts and high-waisted jeans and sit down for perhaps some of the best pulled pork EVER. Now, I'm not sure if I should be giving Deacon's credit for Peckinpaw's pork, but I digress. I had the half (it's more than enough for anyone not currently employed as a linebacker or growing teenage boy) pancakes and pulled pork this morning and it knocked me on my arse. Exceptional, and still under $10 for a pancake, the pork, two eggs, and hashbrowns. The good, in general: hashbrowns are actual HASHBROWNS, shredded and panfried, not cooked potatoes/yams. Hard to find in Vancity. Decently priced breakfast fare, with most stuff under $12 and massively portioned. Coffee is adequate. Service is also adequate. The meh, in general: biscuits are a bit tough. The rye toast is weird and overly dense. The mimosa for two is just a cheap mini bottle of bubbly with a cheap mini bottle of OJ. One time, they let a kid lick the nozzle of the ketchup bottle. Definitely go for the standards...basic eggs and stuff is $7 and all done well. They'll sub out tomatoes for the meat. The sausage is actually pretty good. This is the kind of diner breakfast I used to get back in Wisconsin for like $3, but it's probably the best I've seen in Vancouver for the price. We've been meaning to come here for awhile. Luckily we slipped in right before the 10:30 am Sunday brunch rush, when a pile of people arrived and had to wait to be seated. But really there shouldn't have been a wait, with the five empty tables around us. And that pretty much summed up our experience here: Four staff but unable to get it together. Don't get me wrong...our server was very nice, but she was all over the place. Weekend brunch is busy, so we expected our food would take awhile. However when we saw it sitting on the counter with a bunch of other plates for over five minutes, we started to get annoyed. It bites when your eggs, hash browns and toast are served up barely warm. And bites enough more when you know asking them to be warmed up won't get you anywhere. So we chuffed it up and ate our breakfast as-is. The food was hearty and good, and we liked the casual anything-goes diner vibe. So overall we'll be back to give it another chance, maybe earlier on in the morning next time (they open at 9am on the weekends). I just really hope that today was an exception in the service department. read more

I ordered delivery from Deacon's through justeat.ca, and my order arrived very quickly. The food was surprisingly delicious and high quality for a greasy spoon/diner! I ordered the veggie breakfast quesadilla, and it was so good! The tortilla was homemade (which is very, very hard to come by in Vancouver), and they didn't skimp on anything! It was chock-full of veggies, eggs, and cheese. I will definitely be ordered from them sometime soon. Don't order from here expecting healthy food (i.e., it is truly a GREASY spoon), but it will be delicious! ***Vegetarian friendly, but no clear vegan options. read more

Deacon's Corner looked promising; a place for no nonsense hearty brunch complete with biscuit and gravy. However, the food will only allow us to give it 2 1/2 stars. We sadly felt the quality of the food was nothing sensational. The biscuit can be better, and so was the gravy (which were the main reason of our initial excitement for the place). It was too bland and lack creaminess for my taste. The fried steak was pretty good, with satisfyingly crunchy outside. Of all, I think it was the better part of the meal. We also had the omelet; which was slightly above average, but nothing to rave about. Our servers were pretty attentive and friendly; without being overbearing. A great spot for a yummy breakkie that is quick and cheap. I love the diner feel and spunky servers who make you feel right at home. There is always an eclectic mix of cops, business men and hipster types the frequent Deacon's. It feels like a place you could call "your place" because its friendly atmosphere. Because I like what I like I usually go for the 2 egg combo but next time I am going to have to try this "James Special" that I keep hearing about! I am a big fan of hashbrowns and enjoy what they are putting down at Deacon's corner. Coffee is great too and they are quick to serve more and more of it leading to the occasional caffeine overload! Perfect way to start the day, or afternoon depending what time you decide to get up in the morning. read more

The best breakfast I've had in Vancouver yet. I've tried Savon Meats, tried Twisted Fork (which is good), lots of the others recommended (albeit I've not been to Medina yet). This is more my type of place as it isn't trying to be anything it isn't- it is a diner. Dear cardigan wearers- there is no Quinoa Burger on this menu; this place is down-home style, so don't come expecting roasted eggplant ratatouille Eggs Benny or Vegan Tofu Lentil Huevos Rancheros. It is simple fare. Fairly priced. Fairly large portions. Went in 10:45am this Saturday morning. Plenty of seating, no waiting. Two of us went in a booth- nice. Service was pleasant but not saccharin (which is a risk when there's a southern twist). Prices are more reasonable for what you get than most places in Vancouver. I'm tired of the $13 benedicts with crap potatoes and $5 for juice. I had the Half Sausage and Biscuits (which should be called double, because you get two biscuits with sausage with gravy, plus eggs and hash browns). Girlfriend had the veggie scramble. - Mine was enormous, couldn't finish it. Very good. The biscuit is a bit dense and could be a bit fluffier, but it is still really tasty and works. - Real hash browns! Only here and Nice Cafe! - Great hot sauce (the one I buy for home). - Grapefruit juice that was half the price of any other place [and bigger, they don't pretend that it is fresh squeezed like many places (I can see you pour it out of the carton, you know) and just give you the bottle which fills a pint glass]. - Sourdough toast was great. - Food came out quick. - Didn't have to ask for water. Love this. Worst thing I can say is that the coffee was average at best. Not terrible, but nothing you are going to look forward to, and with cream packets (hate those). Deacon's is a typical diner, grease spoon. And I loved it. I got the veggie hash (mushrooms, peppers, onions, spinach) and I added hollandaise. It had a pool of grease on the bottom of my plate so I knew it was going to be good. And it was! It was exactly what you would expect! Hum. I don't really get the hype - it's a slightly cleaner greasy spoon, but other than that I didn't find the food anything special.. and rather pricey for this part of town. Ordered a baked mac'n cheese, I needed to pepper & salt it for more flavouring. The coffee wasn't refilled, the white bench seating needs a thorough wipe-down. Mushroom omelette was just OK, it tasted freshly eggy. One good thing is cheap parking around this area - $1/hour? Hard to find in Vancouver these days! read more

In my first visit, I scarfed down french toast with a side of bacon (for a measly $8). On my second venture, I loved their simple egg & bacon sandwich with hashbrowns that are shredded and crispy (about $7). Sitting here at 11:30 on a Saturday morning after an evening of copious consumption (at sister restaurant Cobre, as it were), I don't think there's anywhere I'd rather be. Deacon's hits the spot with classic diner breakfast, hot coffee, and a tall glass of ice water. Just like I usually do at restaurants I frequent, I have what I always have, in this case: two eggs sunny side up, hash browns, bacon, and whole-wheat toast. Old reliable is old reliable for a reason... it never lets me down! You'll feel better going out the door that you do coming in, I guarantee it. Service is bang up, coming by with the wifi password as soon as I open my computer to Yelp as I munch. Having pretty much inhaled my breakfast, I pay my $10 bill and continue typing away, graciously accepting more bottomless coffee. Gotta love a place that welcomes its patrons to chill out for a while even after they know there's no more money coming. As I've dined here on many a Saturday late-morning, I'll return most weekends to nurse my hangover as long as Friday night lives on as my weekly evening of boozery. read more

Mwah! I love you, Deacon's Corner. Thank you for being the only truly reliable, scrumptious diner in the DTES - the place that I can always count on for lunch (and our semi-weekly office BEER FRIDAYS) without fear that it will be bland or slightly creepy. When we don't want to venture to Gastown, this is the Museum gal's favourite lunch spot. Tried and true: the veggie scramble loaded with gooey, sharp cheddar and fresh vegetables; the tuna melt (to die for - literally, like in a heart attack way, so I only have it occasionally) and the burgers (veggie patty for me.) My colleagues swear by the Club sandwich! In true diner fashion, they also serve up mac and cheese, meatloaf and rotating specials. The staff (especially the curly-haired waitress) are friendly and fast. I can't give a fifth star, because the prices are a bit high per item - I think that 11 bucks a sandwich (plus tax, tip and drink) is a bit excessive in this area for what is essentially simple fare, especially when the rent must be really cheap. I love this place-and it shows because we visit almost every weekend. Very hipster clientele and staff-the usual for the area. Menu has all the diner basics-not SUPER cheap since, hey, you're in Gastown, but very reasonable compared to other places in the area. I always get the 2 eggs any style ($7) which comes with ham/sausage/chicken sausage patty, hashbrowns, and toast. I LOVE their ham. It's juicy and soft and....if I would ever describe ham as "creamy", this is what it tastes like. They have great thin rye bread (to help make my meal "healthier" too. But the best part are the hashbrowns. Oh the hashbrowns.....I swear they put crack in them potatoes. I think it's actually just hot sauce and some spice, but it's basically crack. No matter how stuffed I am, I can't help but eat every last bit. Boyfriend always gets the corned beef hash, which is delicious too (how can you go wrong with spicy potatoes and delicious meat topped with gooey eggs?). I don't give it a 5 just because they don't offer anything different or unique from any run of the mill diner, but what they do have is damn good. read more

Tried Deacon's after reading a post about it. Great call. I've been a disgruntled Milestone's junky for about 15 years now, getting more and more disappointed with their food (honest, they used to be good). Anyways, back to Deacon's, it is good, simple, honest breakfast/brunch food. The portions are large, the prices are very reasonable, and the service is great (not overdone, not underdone). We've been weekday, weekend, and never had to wait more than 10 minutes. People have mentioned a 45 minute wait... don't know what time of day? We're usually in at around 10am with no problem. Oh, and here's a rarity at a diner... the coffee is pretty good! Location is pretty discreet, easy to miss if you're driving by. They'd be well served to get their bright orange circle on a sign on the outside of the building. read more
