This is a San Antonio legend. Yet I've never eaten here but I know why it's so highly rated. First, it's like stepping backwards in time! I'm not sure they've changed their decor in 40 years down to the booths and counter seating. Gloria took our order without writing a thing down. You won't find that in your every day restaurant, ever. I ordered the Jalapeño mushroom cheeseburger. Amazing! Their fries are crispy too perfection. They even have a "jukebox" at some booths

    Come hungry is my advice.

Having been here over a zillion years this place has seen San Antonio through some tough times. It's been here from the moon landing, Kennedy assassination, COVID and even a fantastic review from Captain Flavortown. ( Most restaurants fold after his visit). The menu has streamlined with the times but the portion sizes and quantity is straight out of the 50s. They still have all the classic diner style options from burgers to seafood sandwiches to salads. My Grand got me hooked on the Chicken fried steak as a youngster. Its remained the same for 40 years. Giant, modest crust and gravy underneath. This is an old southern tradition, and it's brilliant! It keeps the steak moist and the crust crunchy. YES!!!. Opted for the side salad and baked potato. Wonderful sides. Although the onion rings are universally famous, I have to say you should order them when your eating with a partner, even the half order is generous. The decor hasn't changed much in a while other than the buck heads are gone and the music is more soft rock. But not to worry since each of the booths have its own mini jukebox. Definitely a conversation started between you and the kids . Remember to save room ( if possible ) for the icebox pie. So many choices, my favorite has to be the banana cream but the chocolate is really good too, so is the .....better get a couple of slices and a bunch of spoons!

    CFS and homemade mashed potatoes

Had lunch here on my way through San Antonio specifically because someone had them recommended for chicken fried steak. Their CFS was well tenderized, but crust was a little plentiful for my taste. And was served over gravy! Now, the gravy was very tasty with good consistency, but served beneath the CFS with no question as to preference was different. The service and speed of order fulfillment was great. The ambiance is nothing special, as this is old-school diner complete with juke boxes at the booths. The clientele was mainly older and non-demanding. In conclusion, although I enjoyed the CFS, not sure that it would be on my list of best chicken fried steak in Texas.

The experience as…read morea whole was fantastic: warm, attentive service, a beautifully restored house, and food that invites you to slow down and enjoy every bite. We started with the beet and dill salmon on crostini, which was such a fun and memorable dish. Piling everything on yourself made it interactive, almost playful, and you could make each bite as beautiful as you wanted. The flavors were bright, fresh, and perfectly balanced. We ordered all of the entrées--choucroute, hanger steak, and sweet pea risotto--and every single one was delicious. That said, the risotto completely stole the show for me. Creamy and rich without being heavy, it was packed with mushrooms, sweet peas, and delicate pea shoots. The salty, umami depth from the cheese paired beautifully with little bursts of sweetness from the peas--it was honestly exceptional. Outlaw Kitchen is the kind of place where everything works together: the food, the service, and the space. It feels intentional, personal, and special without ever being pretentious. We were blown away on our first visit and can't wait to come back.

Everything was well timed, except when we were trying to get the check. All the staff seemed to be kind and professional. The patio is lovely, but I imagine it can be uncomfortable in the summer heat. Now for the food. Overall it was good. I found some components spectacular, but felt like some lacked seasoning. I was looking forward to the arancini the most. The croquet itself was crunchy and that cheese was definitely telefono style, but needed some seasoning. The pomodoro was tasty, but the basil made it fabulous. Y'all know how I feel about basil. The ravioli was filled with spinach, mushroom, and ricotta with a brown butter sage sauce. It was delicious and the portion was perfect. My favorite part though was the crunchy shitaki "bacon"and butternut squash. I would take a bowl of that in a heartbeat and would absolutely go back for a butternut squash main dish. It was perfectly roasted and full of flavor and those shitaki were amazing. The preserved lemon vinaigrette over lettuces was phenomenal. Incredible fresh flavor. Desert was chocolate torte and sour cream ice cream. The ice cream was the absolute star of the show. The sweet vanilla was incredible. I sampled the halibut and shrimp and it was perfectly cooked. I would definitely come back to try other offerings.

The dining room felt a little mismatched, with different tables and chairs throughout. It gave me the impression that furniture had been added over time simply to fill the space rather than create a consistent look. It didn't ruin the experience, but it was something I noticed. The fries are fresh-cut, which is usually a big selling point for me, but they weren't crispy and could have used a little more seasoning. They had potential but just needed a bit more attention. The server also mentioned that one order of fries was enough to feed two people, but that wasn't my experience based on the portion I received. The burger was good, but it wasn't one that stood out or made me want to come back just for it. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal--it just didn't live up to the hype I'd been hearing. Since it's on the other side of town, I probably wouldn't make a special trip back. That said, everyone has different tastes, and I know plenty of people enjoy this place. I always encourage people to support local businesses and decide for themselves. Every small business deserves the opportunity to earn your business, even if this one just wasn't my personal favorite.

It was a great spot to catch the game with plenty of TVs and an energetic atmosphere. Typically when you sit down at the yard house bar, the bartenders usually clean off the bar with a wet towel and remove the sticky beer/food from the previous patrons and then put down the place settings and black napkin settings. None of that happened. They also always card everyone in the party, I didn't see them card anyone in the bar this night. While there were plenty of staff (in different color shirts - white, black and grey) behind the bar not one person said hello, welcomed anyone on our side of the bar or made eye contact. They were more focused on cleaning the glasses than taking our order. It was just odd. Getting past that, I enjoyed the local cider selection (kiwi strawberry) and my husband enjoyed the Belgium golden ale house beer). Food was great as well we enjoyed the boneless wings Korean style, Miguel's queso and ahi sashimi. Delicious. I also enjoyed the music videos playing on one of the tvs that was so fun. Bathrooms were clean but both needed work. In the women's, I noticed the vacant/occupied switches were not in working order as some of the signs said occupied but they were not; and the ones that said vacant were occupied. My husband noticed that there was no soap or towels in the men's bathroom. It's the little things. Even if you are crowded you should be staffed well enough to take care of these things.

It is in a shopping center of sorts in a commercial establishment here in San Antonio. I say this because it lets you know that there are two entrances and you'll be graded regardless , but you will be indicated where to sit if you go to the hostess front desk by the firewood first Customer service was outstanding and earned this place. It's fifth star. I was made to feel welcome and when the sun in the San Antonio skies was shining right in my face through a window because of the time of the afternoon, I knew I would have no luck studying, so I was moved without hesitation. I know that switching tables might be a little bar but believe me when I'm telling you that simply doing a job versus doing it with a smile, makes the world of a difference to me. The food was fantastic by the way , I'd be remiss if I didn't gush about the meatballs and the pizza. I have never tried spicy honey chicken before and I'm glad that I chose this spot to do it for the first time. Everything is literally made to order right then, and there and the absolute freshness of the ingredients shows from the first bite to the very last. There seemed to be other people studying there too as well as what looked like groups of 2 to 8 occupying various tables so this establishment lends itself to family or party friendly dinner reservations.
