Y'all. I'm never on this side of town. Seriously. So, there's no telling how long I've had this place bookmarked. I'm a sucker for local "click bait 'best of'" lists...I can only assume that's where I found out about it. Driving by, it's got that hole in the wall, run down look. Ordinarily , that doesn't bother me, but seeing it in person ...I must admit I probably wouldn't normally go. But come on! How can you resist the large banner or front reading, " Home of the original jalapeño chicken fried steak". So, in I went to eat with friends. The place, despite the outside, is as homey inside as I can remember anyplace being. Every single person there was as nice as could be and service was exceptional. Love the old school diner vibe! Yep, I tried the jalapeño chicken fried steak and it was phenomenal. Not too spicy, just the right amount of jalapeño. I found it just the right size for the cost, too. Borderline disappointed in the mash potatoes. They could have been hotter and they had that -end of the batch - taste and feel. Overall, not a huge fan of the bathrooms being outside, but that's part of the charm, maybe? Don't let the four stars fool you, because if this joint was more convenient, I'd definitely be going again. read more

We came at lunch hour and we were immediately greeted at the door. They had space to accommodate seven of us. Our drink orders and lunch orders were put in quickly and all meals came out to us at the same time. Everyone at the table tried versions of the famous Jalapeño chicken. & not one of us had a complaint. I recommend the Jalapeño chicken fried steak. read more

Despite the fact that the restaurant was packed the service was quick and the servers were attentive. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak which was huge. This place is fast paced. Seated quickly/ menu and drink order within seconds. My server was ALL over her section: filling drinks, talking to patrons, taking orders, cleaning tables. The food was excellent!! Very friendly staff took our order right away and brought the food very quickly. Restaurant gives a rustic cozy vibe. Went at lunch hour. Very busy but was seated right away. 1st time there. A little cramped when you walk in cause it was busy. Plenty of southern comfort food options. I had the fried fish and fried chicken piece lunch special. Green beans and mash for sides. The fish was light and airy. Jalapeño fried chicken was fried to perfection and very juicy. Green beans were a bit bland and so was the mash. Food was warm but not hot. The homemade bread was delicious. All in all it is a great deal and food was good. Prices are very affordable and I was in and out in about 30mins. Service was great! My first visit to this Mecca of all things fried! This place is famous for their jalapeño fried steak and jalapeño fried chicken. I opted for the regular chicken fried steak so I could judge as such. It was meaty with a nice crisp crust. Very tasty and with the $9 daily lunch special. The fried okra, fried onion rings and gravy were all very good. I would have liked the onion rings to be a bit thicker, but all things considered, they were tasty. . My son had the jalapeño fried chicken thighs. This is a deceptive title because they are served flattened and without bones. Basically a couple of smaller, yet moist, chicken fried chicken with the jalapeño kicking the flavor up a notch or two. Sadly, by 12:45, they were out of their homemade pies. I'll look forward to those on the next visit. read more

I've since ate here twice more. Both times inside during lunch. This is old school diner 101. The place has no matching chairs or tables. The decor is borderline country trash/Cracker Barrel, the restrooms are outside around the corner and require a key that is posted on a wood beam in the dining area. The place is homey to say the least. With all that out of the way, I'll now address the food. Everything is good. It's old school. Just like Momma. The chicken doesn't all look identical. I've loved this place since 1988. It has great good old American food. Wonderful jalapeño chicken and the best coconut pie I've ever tasted, made right there! All of the servers are so nice. Causal place. Great food. Great service. The jalapeno fried chicken breast was awesome. The jalapeno mac and cheese was not just mac and cheese with a jalapeno or two on top as garnish - but actually infused with their terrific flavor. Fresh homemade buns toasted to perfection. This place has been around for years,and recently my my family decided to give it a try.The food here has great flavor.Everything we have ordered was good.The portions for the sides are small,and sometimes they can get a little heavy on the SALT.The chicken fried steak is a nice size,but the meatloaf slice was small.I didn't like the meatloaf very salty sauce.I ordered gravy,and scraped the sauce off.This is a small restaurant,close tables with no ventilation.The restrooms are located outside the back door around the corner with a padlock you have to open.Look before you go around the corner,because you have to walk in the Drive thru lane. read more

I mean this is a restaurant, but that bread is off the chain and it slays me every time. Now, I don't know if you ever been slain by anything, but you can't move afterwards. My buddies come here to get dat chicken fried steak, but their burgers, chicken sandwiches, turkey sandwich, and jalapeno chicken fried steak that will make you holla for more, but don't do it too loudly, the waitress will slap you. Down home Texas comfort food. You walk in here, and it feels like this place has been here forever. It's decorated with scenic landscape paintings of Texas bluebonnets. It feels like walking into local artist, Michael Onderdonk's studio. The food was pretty good. It's a selection of fried foods and burgers, with a few salads. I opted for the daily special, the Diablo Burger, which was topped with jalapenos. It does seem like this diner is straight out of a DDD episode- I agree with Jeff H on that one.
